time to take the matter into their own hands more and it's. a good result could sure use a warning to looters if you come out to enfield tonight you'd better be in disguise at the first sign of trouble this is what happens. around five hundred mainly young men chased down the road after police ready to drive troublemakers out of town. despite the mob atmosphere a large crowd of young men are out for justice there's been no trouble so far most are ordinary people out to protect their communities a lot of people are here to help there obviously are some paper that going to do the opposite effect you're going to get that everywhere very much start it's taken all stories of what young children or children on the streets follow this is happening if there's not enough police them will help them and just get everyone the wage the cost to the shops and in this push them away basically we don't want
3:02 pm
to go after anyone any trouble we just one of my sure that no one comes in specially no shops open. and it's not just in enfield in other parts of town seeks have banded together to protect their livelihoods and property sons and daughters come together with us and say let's solve the problems without one to violence and causing distress to trouble which then takes it on. causing further violence in the streets. this is the current face of communities across england many of which felt under siege from looters and said in their darkest hour the police were nowhere to be seen police have not been anywhere where the police if the police were hit if in all that would've been done maybe this is what david cameron means when he talks constantly about the big society handing power and responsibility back to local communities and i think the scenes we also. television screens last night of communities coming together to try
3:03 pm
and stop violence taking place was a model of how these things should be done that despite the fact that three young asian men were killed in birmingham early on wednesday trying to protect local businesses looters allegedly rammed the with a car the tragedy ignited anger in the asian community a vigilante band attracts all sorts and. doesn't just rear its head in looters there's a huge number of police officers on the streets of england at the moment which many find reassuring but groups like the enfield army prove that communities still feel police are unable to protect them with budget cuts for front line offices still on the table on the beat could get fewer and further between local vigilante groups could take up the slack. let's talk to jeremy corbin from the u.k. labor party joins me live now from london mr good to have you here on our tonight
3:04 pm
david cameron has blamed the riots on the sickness of society what do you believe caused this week's nationwide scenes of criminality there in the u.k. . a combination of things some of it is simply young people who are young people who took advantage of a situation and did quite a lot of looting a lot of damage in there were tragically a number of deaths were sparked off. where a young round was killed following an old haitian with the police and then the rioting then later spread across the whole country a lot of other young people were enjoying being felt that they could do whatever they wish with impunity because they felt i believe very much from society so there are a number of different issues at stake here one is the relationship between the police and communities in some parts of britain particularly. what happened in tottenham
3:05 pm
the second is a group of people who see themselves as able to steal with impunity taking designer clothes watches or what kind of thing and they very much larger group of young people who are often on employ feel that society isn't doing very much for them and feel very alienated and i think there are some very uncomfortable lessons that have got to be learned by the whole country from this experience not doing much for these people doesn't that rests with the likes of you politicians yes it does absolutely and in tottenham for example one half of the young people are living in households of the poor or over all twenty percent of young people in britain are out of work many graduates even find difficulties in finding jobs many school leavers find difficulty in getting training or jobs and of course this then. put it filters down into younger people who feel that their chances of getting anything
3:06 pm
good in life are quite limited and therefore they look for other option and this legislation is happening but i quickly ask you there's a legacy from your government the previous government which you were part of or is this as a result of the current government's policies it's not all because of what's happened by the present government it comes from what's happened before it comes from the recession but it also comes i believe in part and only in part from the more recent cuts taking place in student allowances and in benefits in general and so there is an increasing impoverishment of poor young people particularly in the big cities of this country and it's a very uncomfortable less than a lot of politicians have got a little something's got to be done and fast to bring these people these young people back into the mainstream of society u.k. prime ministers focused on the role of networks like twitter and facebook the way they played a role in organizing the unrest do you think that caused to curb social media at
3:07 pm
times of unrest is actually valid. no i don't it's utterly ridiculous the idea that you could sense of people's methods of communication because there's some arm rest well this history and this two hundred years ago during the programming wars there were attempts to prevent printing presses being in operation because people might find out what's going on we can't stop communication what you have to do is assert moral value within society and encourage young people to believe that they have some scope and some stake in society and that is the problem it's the social alienation the impoverishment the disillusionment of young people is not exclusive to britain it also happens to be france and spain and italy and in many other countries across western europe are you concerned that if maybe a kneejerk reaction where social media is controlled that this could lead to a lack of freedom in information and perhaps turn britain into a police state i mean it could be the start of something bigger could it not
3:08 pm
there's a very unpleasant agenda surrounding this which david cameron in part is promoting while is that good tale meant of social media such as twitter and facebook the other is eviction of whole families from homes because one member of the family has been charged and convicted of an offense to do with the events of the past week and then you suggest bringing in water can suggest that putting the army on the street all kinds of draconian measures that we have to listen and try and understand not the principles of those people to the stealing simply for themselves but the danger to all of us of the very large number of young people who don't feel any any problem with getting involved in it because they don't feel they have any stake in society as a whole that is a very dangerous thing we've got to learn lessons from repression won't solve it repression will make it worse censorship won't solve it that will make it worse. thanks for your thoughts thanks for your time joining us live in the. us
3:09 pm
court has ruled. the two american contractors who work for a private security firm in iraq consumed donald rumsfeld over the alleged illegal imprisonment and torture if proven guilty the former pentagon chief will be held personally accountable while in iraq the two men made claims that the firm was engaged in corruption it's believed that they would then detain familiar months at a military facility before being released without explanation or charge but also against rumsfeld have been rejected by prosecutors until now let's get more on this from activist deborah sweet joining us live now from new york thanks for being with us here on our team of the judges taking the side of the military contractors after years of litigation how far do you think this legal action against rumsfeld could go well i suppose it could go all the way to revealing this sordid business that stands behind this illegitimate occupation out the iraq and i would add afghanistan by the united states one can only hope that
3:10 pm
there actually is the potential for the whole story coming out in this lawsuit of course it is not just by happenstance that the lawsuit has not been heard before this because it's the obama administration that has resolutely opposed any prosecutions of the former bush regimes war criminals and office like rumsfeld and like bush himself dick cheney and all the torture lawyers that actually created the justification for torture carried out in guantanamo abu ghraib and across the whole rubric of the war on syria how do you explain please why obama would take this position when this is all about the previous administration. well i can only quote his words and he said that he that of course torture was wrong but that he preferred to go forward rather than look backward and in fact
3:11 pm
there spend numerous attempts to seek justice in u.s. courts by people who were detained in guantanamo completely without charges by people who were kidnapped and taken to u.s. black torture sites like mahara are in a canadian citizen and like the relatives of three prisoners at guantanamo who died in two thousand and six none of these people have been able to convince a court in the united states to allow their legitimate lawsuits to go forward and this is in each case because the obama administration department of justice has oppose these inquiries and their justification is always national security so that is in effect in a boss the generals to a lot of dollars against the legislature to legislation here but in
3:12 pm
a way does that give you hope for some sort of optimism because if this has been brought to light then perhaps could it not influence the bowmans future way of the u.s. involvement in iraq and afghanistan. well of course bringing all of this to light is extremely important because after all these occupations only continue based on people feeling that they're legitimate i think they're profoundly immoral lemon just and everything we learn i mean this is quite an incredible case to former u.s. veterans who were in afghanistan working for i'm sorry in iraq working for an iraqi company that had a massive contract with the united states department of justice defense in fact started to become informers for the united states department of justice the f.b.i.
3:13 pm
and what they found to be while in iraq massive cases of stealing selling alcohol to iraqi forces of bribery and all the sorts of the things that we know and we knew were going on when billions of dollars are involved in the u.s. funds conducting this occupation these guys started to try to get the truth out and then were grabbed by u.s. military interrogated apparently according to them and i certainly believe them. under the same methods of so-called enhanced interrogation that was approved all the way to the top not only rumsfeld we know cheney was behind this and bush said all of this was happening with his approval so of course the truth has got to come out and i really congratulate. donald fance and nathan are telt for fighting
3:14 pm
through to try to get the story out and as they said it is really important for other whistleblowers to come forward. thanks very much for sharing your thoughts in new york. well coming up on r.t. this hour an assault on civil liberties in hungary journalists are forced to keep quiet if they want to keep their jobs as a new media door is slammed for curbing press freedom. after choppy week for europe stocks for eurozone countries have resorted to methods unseen since the two thousand and eight crisis to try and calm markets france italy spain and belgium of decided to ban short selling on the shares of banks and other financial companies that practices investors selling stocks that are expected to fall in price before buying them back and keeping the difference short selling is being blamed for increasing recent market volatility meanwhile france has been battling speculation it was going to lose its aaa school which was finally reaffirmed by

ratings jobs on wednesday investors however remain unconvinced the country's finances a solid enough recent figures show stagnation in growth while the banking sector has been battling health rumors. from the european school of management and technology says it's the banks that are once again being offered protection. part of these rescue managed measures have been taken to to rescue the banking system. especially with the banks in southern europe and i think this needs to be addressed but overall we also have this kind of political situation where it has been very convenient for governments to increase debt levels to avoid bringing tough measures to their constituencies and i think this is something that has to end markets have indicated that they are not willing anymore to finance these large debt levels my fear is that we see some short term improvement in the share prices i think overall we will see a continued downward trend so overall i think these measures will not have a long lasting effect france also has
3:16 pm
a debt problem the overall debt level is very high and now that the u.s. government debt has been downgraded there's obvious fear of who will be next in the game and we've seen the problems with spain in italy recently and i think it's quite natural that the markets at this stage. are concerned about france as well so i think that the french government is under some strong pressure to act requires some political will to implement these changes and i think that is the big if so if france is able to convince the market that it will implement these tough measures then i think we could see some stabilization in the markets. more news coming tonight catchin videos are always there for you on our website here's a taste of what's on life you write at the moment of teeth dot com shorts fought in the korean peninsula and fresh tensions between the north and so with analysts predicting souls twenty twelve elections will bring big changes in relations. also on the website and alien abduction is more likely than sensible congressman used

talking and been talking about it but they have laid the people off because they saw that it is unsustainable. so i think. this debate has become. very politicized it's more about politics than about professional commerce. if something is all sustainable you have to cut costs that the day has been strongly contested and many talented journalists have found themselves out of the job. it's not just. the. recent firings and uncertainty about the implications of the new law just some of the recent events the cooling serious concerns about hungary's democratic. everything looked at the government needs an independent media so if this

who out there is absolutely brilliant careful not to crush. well i just love the summer here in moscow. moscow out is here for you in just over an hour from now on our team now it's time for the latest business news with dmitri. that's right bill you can get later than that it's almost half past eleven here in moscow most volatile trading week in free years ended on a positive note in rochelle markets have closed up for the second day in a row after the negative finish of the previous six sessions he's a western from out on says unlike the crisis of two thousand and eight like a players are better positioned this time to weather the storm. the good thing is
3:24 pm
that even though we were down a lot it didn't seem like there were panic selling i think that investors were much better prepared this time around than they were in two thousand and eight the fall it's been quite a significant if very equally significant on a daily basis in the beginning of the week but i think because it was so much bad news out of europe and us so much speculation about first down with that they're going to happen of the credit rating but more bad news out of europe of speculation about the next country to basically be in trouble over its sovereign debt invest that have had time to position themselves in a better way for the downturn so in other words they moved slightly more into defensive sectors one of the downturn came and then they did when they were selling out a few clients i spoke to were you know were selling part of what their holdings if they were reducing russia. but they were not sort of selling in panic. in an effort to stabilize the markets for european nations have banned short selling on banks france italy spain and belgium opera hitting bets which allow investors to profit

from falls in the price of financial stocks the move follows high volatility in the sector fears about their exposure to eurozone government debt david jones a market strategist index believes this will only provide short term relief. and that's helping the markets today we've got for example here in london barclays is one of the top prizes in the dice and we are seeing strength in banks but it is like history repeating itself we've got a similar levels of volatility we had three years ago in september two thousand and eight there was widespread short selling bans but over the next month financial markets still dropped another fifteen to twenty percent so again traders in europe at least so far are back convinced the short selling bans are necessary to change anything. similar to how the markets are doing in the final half hour of trading in the u.s. they are still positive that's after a strong recovery on first day but gains are limited as data shows consumer confidence is born sharply to fifty four point nine points this is the lowest level

in thirteen years here's the closing picture for friday's session in europe the european markets did fall immediately after the opening but have since a recovered to end with very strong results up three percent after posting pretty much the same gauge the previous session however the latest french economic growth figures are cause for concern as they show years and second biggest economy was stagnant in the second. and now for the closing picture in russia where finally we've seen some strong performance that's after a moderately positive session on day and after a men's losses earlier in the week the r.t.s. of three point two percent my six two point two percent let's take a look at the snapshot of market movers on the my sex lukoil unlike other energy shares was not their strong. point three percent weaker than the market that's after the company boosted his net profit by fifty percent the first top of the year reaching seven point two billion dollars but investors are not seeing these figures

as impressive rosneft up four point four percent of the close meanwhile private gas producer nova turkey is up one percent also weaker than the market that's after reporting net profits rising one hundred twenty percent in the second quarter and oil prices of moved back into the red territory many fearing that the market volatility will slow down economic recovery we have seen really very strong volatility this week well dropping to as low as seventy five dollars per barrel. in all the news industrial production russia rose over five percent the first seven months of the year that was below forecast covered action was among the fastest growing sectors up sixty four percent the state expects seattle production growth to reach five point two percent. why that's all from the business team for this week we can join me at eight twenty am monday morning i'll be here with an update bill is next with headlines.
