6:00 pm
welcome to the lower show we'll get the real headlines with none of the mercy we're going to live out of washington d.c. now that i will take a look at the g.o.p. presidential debate in iowa from last night with our favorite comedian sarah but it causes let's just say that is scary as the thought of one of these people becoming president is for now there is still plenty to laugh about then rick perry is expected to announce a hill be joining the presidential race this saturday let's talk about his record when it comes to executions he may have led an innocent man die so he's not going
6:01 pm
to hurt him or the g.o.p. crowd could it actually help radley balko is going to give us his take and we'll speak to kashmir hill about the use of drones right here in america law enforcement getting their hands on the news corp has one so who could be next going to get it all that and more tonight including a dose of happy hour but first let's take a look at the mainstream media has decided to miss. all right so obviously all eyes were turned of the g.o.p. presidential debate that took place in iowa last night because after all one of these people could be the next president of the united states but also worth discussing safe to say that the mainstream media doesn't just discuss oh no no they obsess they parse over every single word that gets. a night in iowa the republican presidential hopefuls take sam the each other and president obama did anyone come out the clear winner him try to break out of the pack he repeatedly
6:02 pm
zene fellow minnesotan michele bachmann if there was a surprise performance it might have been newt gingrich's but the winner of the debate overall in terms of how it changes the election and what effect it has going forward is pretty obviously mitt romney. i don't get me wrong i watch the debate i'm covering it too i obviously think that it's important what it's what is what is important is the stuff to actually stick out the stuff that makes you want to laugh or the stuff that might want to make you cry and run in fear now be expect the usual g.o.p. talking points about who loves the constitution more than the other and foreign policy is a great example of where we should be looking let's see we've been fighting a ten year war in afghanistan we're still in iraq we have drones in elite teams in pakistan yemen somalia and who knows where else but all the while social programs are going to be cut here at home can keep those wars going and foreign aid is going to be given out to whoever the flavor of the month is the weeping promote stability
6:03 pm
worldwide until of course they do something wrong or their population revolts and they will drop that foreign leader like they're nothing so it's important to look at what these candidates would actually do if they assumed the ridiculously powerful role of commander in chief and rick santorum gave us a taste of that. iran is a country that most people you confronted i was in front of that i was in front of the skirt of the iran freedom supporter it's usually two thousand and four it was blocked by joe biden going to less and barack obama once we got it passed and i can tell you if we see enjoyment when rick santorum is president iran will not get a nuclear weapon because the world as we know it will be no more come on. you guys hear that here we have another iran war hawk basically said he's ready to get us involved in of the war to make sure that iran doesn't get a nuclear weapon and we've already drained all of our resources fighting this endless war against the worldwide threat of al qaeda can we give the iran fear mongering a rest for
6:04 pm
a minute now i give big props to ron paul for calling santorum out on this last night you've heard the war propaganda that is loud allude to lead us into the sixth war and i worry about that position. i worry about that position to congressman paul everybody should worry about the opposition but you know who doesn't apparently the mainstream media these people spend hours going over every single word of these debates and when somebody says something that's actually crazy deserves to be questioned they just let it fly basically we just found out that rick santorum would be open to getting us into another war if elected president something that this country and the world as a whole do not need and yet that's something that the mainstream media has decided to miss. all right so we learn from the debate in iowa last night the g.o.p. presidential candidates have all studied their talking points when it comes to taxes abortion and how much president obama has sucked but we also learned that
6:05 pm
there is a lot to laugh about when it comes to this group of eight who finally started turning on each other and bringing the claws out so let's take some time out to look at the best moments of last night joining me from our studio in new york is sarah bennet casa blogger for comedy central indecision and. com sarah thanks so much for coming on the show today we miss you it's been a while since we've had you on and you know sometimes these debates make me a little worried that these are the actual candidates for president in this world so i really needed a cheer me up here i know that you watched who do you think one. alone a you know i'm biased in favor of michele bachmann who is in addition to being the greatest human being on the planet my own personal spirit animal who i pray to every night when i meditate in my bedroom so i am always going to say that michelle won however i will say that mitt romney came off the most presidential i really
6:06 pm
really liked how upset teeth paul was get him paul and he was getting a little feisty and i found it rather seductive. and i got i don't know presidential mitt romney still looks like a sleeve the car salesman if you ask me but let's move on to your favorite girl michele here's a question i'm going to play a clip of it was asked her last night that kind of had a lot of people up in a tizzy take a look but the lord said be submissive why are you sure to be submissive to your husband and president would you be submissive to your house. what do you think about when i thought it was a perfectly rational question i've seen that pope many times because she was giving a speech at one of these mega churches one of these holy living tabernacle of the waters of the sacred christ of mary in the sky and she said you can watch it and that's where we're going to let me stop you there for
6:07 pm
a second because i was kind of sad about that at first so i could leave actually after that i thought i was really fair they would never ask a guy if he was going to make his wife submit to her but then i also saw the clip where she actually said these words give our audience a look. yeah you did go to. church very slow to. interest why should you go into something like this but the arts the should this should work should this the church the. church and you construction and there were children he was married to law school there for. i yeah yeah yeah yeah that is actually really scary don't you think absolutely and in that same speech at a church she also talks about how she realized she wanted to marry marcus bachmann her husband because she had a dream that god sent her and that god sent marcus the exact same dream on the
6:08 pm
exact same night i do not want this person leading my country she's full of fairy tales and creepy delusions i don't know it sounds to me like marcus bachmann maybe just has a way with words he said that they're out of date he was trying to get in with her and he was like no kidding i have that exact same dream too and it might have just worked or of. but nobody being is that later on that one of the candidates actually the candidate our favorite candidate we've been talking about him he went missing take a look at this are we actually missing a candidate on the stage. we are. to be right back congresswoman bachmann there she is cuts ok. ok. now since you are so in tune with michele bachmann where do you think she was where did she go. oh us ladies we take so long in the bathroom part
6:09 pm
of me wants to say that she was doing key bumps in the bathroom but then i realize that the republican debate so much like studio fifty four as. the d.m.v. so i assume she was this taken some of the brass chillin out bringing it all and probably talking to christ probably you know on a little cell phone convo with mr jesus himself to find out what she should say next well i think about might be an option or we'll have to see if she files a police report again like she did a number of years ago and says that a group of lesbians actually held her hostage in a bathroom sink because might be an option if we did see a lot of claws come out you were mentioning tim pawlenty he got pretty feisty and finally they moved on from just criticizing president obama all the time to going after each other except for a new gingrich decided to go after someone else take a look at this one how do you respond to people who say that your campaign has been no social research first of all chris that i took seriously broached injunction to
6:10 pm
put aside the talking points and i wish you would put aside the gotcha questions. was that is the ngs. i guess it was you know a snap that you can't which learned back on the playground on the mean streets of whatever fancy place he grew up in i do think the question was phrased in a little bit of a ridiculous fashion i think it's a worthwhile question i think he could have said it differently and got his point across but which i think later was like these mickey mouse questions which is just always adorable when a candidate invokes the name of the sacred and great mickey mouse to deride a fox news commentator i am always happy. now there is one thing i was obviously just giving the media a hard time because they completely like to miss the foreign policy that was discussed but there is one thing that we've seen constantly from everything channel
6:11 pm
etc reporters there is all the food that's available in iowa they have fried everything it's so unhealthy but i think this one really really took it too far and you let me know or even show the audience it's. american. that is really you guys thanks that's what you're wondering if you're producing t.v. they produce for you or they produce again that's because. i can't decide if i should thank the producing team for producing at him there or for making all of us watch that it was most uncomfortable in that i've ever seen on t.v. . it hurts it hurts me alona
6:12 pm
that is going to ensure that i won't sleep for another six weeks thank you for showing me that again i thought i was over the trauma but i will never be over that moment and i don't think i'm quite over that either but you know we do what we can in order to try to get ourselves over the fact that these are the presidential candidates on the republican side so there i thank you so much for trying to cheer us up on now and tonight thank you have a great night. now there is one presidential candidate who used to be the laughingstock of the g.o.p. ron paul is that i go as the past thirty years and sticking with the same positions of that entire time but it seems as if there's been a change in how the public and the mainstream media perceive him he's no longer the outcast of the g.o.p. but rather a serious candidate parties christine takes us to ames i want to see how ron paul's latest presidential run is going so far.
6:13 pm
he is a force to be reckoned with a three time presidential candidate congressman from texas o.b.-g.y.n. doctor and leader of the revolution. paul is now in iowa why if you're at it again campaigning for two thousand and twelve the booms and busts comes from a failed monetary system does work and once again his fans have come from all corners of the country to hear his message and show support from kansas city missouri and support ron paul myself and my family of four kids of my wife las vegas a longtime critic of the federal government the constitution gives no authority for the federal government to run our educational systems and they should be doing it his policies are often told radical just think of how many nuclear weapons surrounding iran do chinese are there the indians or the pakistanis hear these
6:14 pm
realities are the united states is there all these countries china has nuclear weapons why have one d.p. natural that they might want to weapons but many of his entire establishment ideas are becoming increasingly mainstream as more and more americans reject the status quo of past decades especially his views on u.s. foreign policy in particular in afghanistan resonate with voters i don't believe our national security requires i think we're a. say for it the threat of terrorism is related to our foreign policy so i feel less safe because we're over there i never feel safer for the foreign policy that we have today while often doubted by the mainstream media if i was a betting woman i think ron paul doesn't have a chance unfortunately for you but who is there is there a lack of enthusiasm over some the talk here g.o.p. candidate another question about electability. do you have any sir there's always the question of whether you fire looks like they paid more attention to you this
6:15 pm
time around oh no they're moving my way his fans are some of the most loyal in american political history we've been following since eighty six perhaps since he was here. for thirty years he's he's not flip flop that anything except the death of everything else. constitutional robert taft barry goldwater show at least you know which of us and despite his seventy five years many of his fans look like this is the man you need to be president but i think he's a smart guy and i think he would change things and need to be changed personally i would describe myself prior to being seen ron paul in the only elections election cycles a liberal democrat you saw him up on stage talking you know against against the war as against you know just why we were civil liberties and why it went to democrats saying this or even this we need to fix the country we maxed out our get ceiling as
6:16 pm
it is and there weren't too many countries and this is where it all happens famous iowa straw poll here at iowa state university now ron paul has reportedly already sold thousands of tickets and those will be spending most of tomorrow or people cast their votes most people here think he will definitely well the question is can he come in first and then answer will have to wait till tomorrow to find out reporting in ames iowa christine for south r t. coming up sunday missing from last night's g.o.p. debate with texas governor rick perry is scheduled to announce his fate at the white house from morrow it's not going to focus on perry's record when it comes to capital punishment. into that only one of the three mechanisms to do the work to bring justice accountability. i have every right to know what my government should do if you want to know why i pay
6:17 pm
taxes. i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes see a story and it seems so sleep you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else and you hear see some other part of it and realize that everything is ok if you don't i'm sorry welcome to the big picture. says. let's not forget that we had an apartheid regime right. i think iraq is feeding on the well.
6:18 pm
whatever government says they're going to keep him safe get ready if you give them your freedom. for. fear. bay area rapid transit cops have urged quite
6:19 pm
a reputation for themselves and not in an honorable way out of the outrageous behavior and blatantly this blatant displays of brutality by bart police allege people like oscar grant and charles hill that the people of san francisco is now taking to the streets to send their message that something has to be done. demonstrated to the manager lisa surveillance video that supposedly shows what happened that night charles hill the shot and killed that was july third the wrist some video you can see here disrupted protests their streets and that was over the fourth of july weekend and the protests have continued since but recently protesters of notice of the guard police are catching on and they're attempting to stop these protests before they even get started and this time by asking service providers to cut off cell phone signals in the stations it please everyone seemed to notice the key to this lack of so-called service in the. specially when he realized it was not a random check if you can get anything serious he. absolutely.
6:20 pm
yeah what if something awful happened how could people call for help and for their loved ones or the border cops that's afraid of protestors and they're willing to put everyone's safety at risk not to mention that many are arguing of the guard police has no legal right to cut off cell phone service only better agencies can block cell phone use and with that only under specific circumstances i personally i don't really buy bart statement that this was a voluntary blackout on the part of the service providers they actually have a lot of leverage over these companies and security researcher christoffersen going points out bart has the power to terminate tower contracts in the future so it's hardly a polite request now in response the bars actions and to the guards actions and on offices are the launched operation bart so i guess i'm not the only one of the finds this disturbing and instead of actually addressing the problems which have created protests the killing of two innocent men and a long history of police brutality the bart simply tries to silence its critics.
6:21 pm
now there's one person who wasn't at the republican debate in iowa last night but who just might be joining a presidential race it's texas governor rick perry the most are expecting his announcement this saturday conveniently on the same day that the ames straw poll comes out and since the reaction of the candidates that's for. has been pretty lackluster perry seems like he just might be able to get the people support so how do you look at his tough talking gun toting super socially conservative small government advocate maybe as bit of a hypocrite he under perry's watch the state of texas carried out two hundred and thirty four executions and some of these cases like that of cameron todd willingham they convicted prisoners may have been innocent but perry chose not to intervene and i will he fully supports the death penalty they have obviously comes in and not questioning this power of the government when the conviction may be faulty and yet a focus group of texas republicans one participant commented that it's quote takes balls to execute an innocent man so what does that say about perry and also about
6:22 pm
the kind of president that some republicans just might want joining me to discuss this is radley balko senior writer and investigative reporter for the huffington post rather i want to thank you for joining us tonight and for starters i want to ask you the same question that you asked on your blog tonight which is why is rick perry the poster boy for limited government. yeah we're going to look at the death penalty like a government program you've got here you've got a guy in perry who you know the scope of this program a state possibly executed it is a person i mean this is the most probably solemn power we give to the state government to execute its own citizens and it may have killed an innocent person and kerry's response to that was you know not to alarm not you know we should give government must power because what happened here is response to that was to cover it up he you know not only did he insists that willingham was guilty he brought in a bunch of stuff about williams character but nothing to the case and then one of the state forensics commission tried to look into you know. evidence that was
6:23 pm
introduced at williams trial barry replaced the committee members that were pushing for an investigation and replaced them with a bunch of three committee members who had a long history of being very pro prosecution in fact all three are former prosecutors so this is a guy who has a deferential government in this case and this is probably the most awesome power that we can do is take over so my argument is that any conservatives who are rallying behind him are being sort of critical you may support the death penalty but you certainly can't supports the possibility of executing his and people least i would hope not also think that all of these republicans are being hypocritical or is there some kind of a breakdown that occurs for a lot of republicans where they say yes i like limited government and a case of making sure that we're tough on crime whatever works you know well let's back out. you know when you when it comes to you know when you hear a regulator or an f.d.a. regulation or a lot of conservatives or republicans so about how to choice theory the trappings
6:24 pm
of bureaucracy and you know that the corruption of power when you talk about cops and prosecutors who are also government employees are going to become very deferential and we should never question and we should never you know an interview they might do things wrong or for the wrong reasons but i mean you know very few of the focus group the use of them takes politics person you know that's the and that was an uncommon sentiment in texas i actually interviewed the dallas county district attorney craig watkins actually trying to find innocent people who were convicted before him and when henry wade was a sort of long time law and order hero of law and order right when he was an opposite court and walk ins convicting an innocent person was considered sort of a badge of honor it was a testament to your prowess as a prosecutor but watkins told me so you know this idea isn't completely unheard of you know i mean the senator from the right when he could be stories is often well these are bad people who did other things wrong so we're not you know shed any
6:25 pm
tears about it but we need to look at the history of exonerations about and about three hundred d.n.a. exonerations now and already these people did not have a prior criminal record so that's that's a part of their heritage well now to me that's how do they it takes balls to execute an innocent person and that's absolutely ludicrous i by no means can connect to it at all you said that's really not all that uncommon in texas but is it only texas or do you think that there is some type of the thing laying among republicans in the country right now who lot of point to president obama and say that he's weak he's not a real leader and so that i actually draw more of them to sell and i carry. well i mean i don't i don't i don't so i mean i have my problems on criminal justice issues as well i mean are you so much look back on all this stuff peter i mean he he argued against a right to post conviction d.n.a. testing in death penalty cases because justice department argued the other side of that case was one case where the supreme court. but you know i mean i think you
6:26 pm
take balls to provide additional you screwed up and you made a huge monumental mistake and you're going to you know do what you can to fix it that seems to be a lot more back thought and probably why fewer of them do it. that's a good statement i like that i totally agree with you there but what do you think the chances are if perry does jump into the race on saturday as he says that he's going to help operating think that he might be in can especially compared to the other candidates that are out there of which you know now this is the we've already seen the debate from last night and i we saw the debate in new hampshire and i don't think that they're looking all that impressive. you know when you know they're already i mean he's already sort of front runner and he has been announced yet so you know clearly i think a lot of the right is lining up behind him and you know you can in on the economy in texas has been strong so he's got that record to run on but you know i think some thoughtful conservatives and conserves i don't necessarily agree with a lot of things actually have come out you know in criticize kerry on this issue in particular of david brooks and your times you know pretty stinging column about the
6:27 pm
death penalty related to the new yorker piece that expose was willing in case and i think you'll see more of that i think you'll see more people sort of more kind of thoughtful people or a come out and say that's something that he needs to address and something needs to fix. one post i wrote today and actually it's a column i wrote earlier when i was with the reason magazine and there's another case in texas where there's a guy d.n.a. testing could confirm his guilt or it is shown to be innocent and there are some significant questions skinner about his guilt one when he was hours away from execution and perry. is fighting d.n.a. testing in this case i mean it's really unfathomable to me that a governor would actually fight to you know not to remain in whether a guy is innocent or not i mean that's me is really sort of unforgivable you know it's one thing to support the death penalty and we're going to say we're going to execute this guy and we really don't care to find out whether or not he's innocent and that is something and i think kerry needs to be held accountable or like i
6:28 pm
think there are i hope that we start hearing our questions about that from other reporters and you mentioned well and have only had case the skinner case what about the case recently as well where a mexican citizen was actually executed even though you know perry basically just spit in the face of international law there when it came to the fact that he should have been given the right to speak to the consulate how many other cases are there that really look so that on kerry's kerry's record. well i mean there are lots of case sections where i mean no callous county alone as i had seen more exonerate d.n.a. exonerations than our but i think three states. i mean there's every reason for perry to be skeptical of his own come to states criminal justice system and to wonder if you know it's making some pretty huge monumental errors here and again i mean this this goes this cuts against everything interviews claim to stand for which is that you know you're supposed to be skeptical of government you're supposed to you know understand the government has enormous and awesome power and we're supposed to keep checks on it we're supposed to monitor government workers
6:29 pm
and make sure that they're making the right decisions for the right reasons and very just turning a blind eye at all i mean you know that you've got cases and taxes work but would diminish your sleeping through trials or is one case where the prosecutor was sleeping with the judge during the trial i mean these are just. so i mean it's. a very really needs to be out of jail to count on this and i mean if you're going to you know have the brains the entire country you know. he needs to correct his record of this or at least give a better explanation that yes yeah definitely you have a hypocrisy there in parts they can't they have to surprise republicans also say they don't like a lot of government they're interfering in their lives and yet they want to get near better rather i want to thank so much for joining us tonight. nick struck me on the. now so i can make our top line segments and i have a question that they were asked during last night's g.o.p. debate and i recently found out that news has.
