10:00 pm
talking of a lot of show we'll get the real headlines with none of the mercy or can we live out of washington d.c. now and i will take a look at the g.o.p. presidential debate in iowa from last night with our favorite comedian sarah but in concept let's just say that as scary as the thought of lot of these people becoming president is for now there is still plenty to laugh about then rick perry is expected to announce a hill be joining the presidential race this saturday let's talk about his record when it comes to executions he may have what an innocent man die so he's not going
10:01 pm
to hurt him or the g.o.p. crowd could it actually help radley balko is going to give us his take and we'll speak to kashmir hill about the use of drones right here in america law enforcement getting their hands on the news corp has one so who could be next going to get all that and more tonight including a dose of happy hour but first let's take a look at the mainstream media has decided to make its. art so obviously all eyes were turned to the g.o.p. presidential debate that took place in iowa last night because after all one of these people could be the next president of the united states but while it's worth discussing safe to say the mainstream media doesn't just discuss oh no no they obsess they parse over every single word they get. i night in iowa the republican presidential hopefuls take sadly each other and president obama did anyone come out a clear winner him pulling to try to break out of the pack he repeatedly zene
10:02 pm
fellow minnesotan michele bachmann if there was a surprise performance it might have been newt gingrich's but the winner of the debate overall in terms of how it changes the election and what effect it has going forward is pretty obviously mitt romney. i don't get me wrong i watch the debate i'm covering it too i obviously think that it's important but it's what is it is important is the stuff that actually sticks out the stuff that makes you want to laugh or the stuff that might want to make you cry and run in fear not be expected at usual g.o.p. talking points about who loves the constitution more than the other and foreign policy is a great example of where we should be looking let's see we've been fighting a ten year war in afghanistan we're still in iraq we have drones in elite teams in pakistan yemen somalia and who knows where else and all the while social programs are going to be cut here at home to keep those wars going and foreign aid is going to be given out to whoever the flavor of the month is that we think promote
10:03 pm
stability worldwide until of course they do something wrong or their population revolts and who will drop that foreign leader like they're nothing so it's important to look at what these candidates would actually do if they assumed the ridiculously powerful role of commander in chief and rick santorum gave us a taste of that. iran is a country that most deeply confronted i was in front of that i was in front of this curve but also the iran freedom support a second one to excuse me two thousand and four it was blocked by joe biden bone the lesson brock obama once we got it passed and i can tell you if we're santorum and when rick santorum is president iran will not get a nuclear weapon because the world as we know it will be no more comes and. goes here that here we have another iran war hawk that basically said he's ready to get us involved in of the war to make sure that iran doesn't get a nuclear weapon and we've already drained all of our resources fighting this endless war against the worldwide threat of al qaeda can we give the iran fear mongering a rest for a minute now i give big props to ron paul for calling santorum out on this last
10:04 pm
night you heard the war propaganda that is loud who would lead us into the sixth war and i worry about the position. i worry about that position to congressman paul everybody should worry about the opposition but you know who doesn't apparently the mainstream media these people spend hours going over every single word of these debates and when somebody says something it's actually crazy they deserve to be questioned they just let it fly basically we just found out that rick santorum would be open to getting us into another war if elected president something that this country and the world as a whole do not need and yet that's something that the mainstream media has decided to miss. all right so we learn from the debate in iowa last night the g.o.p. presidential candidates have all studied their talking points when it comes to taxes abortion and how much president obama has sucked but we also learned that
10:05 pm
there is a lot to laugh about when it comes to this group of eight who finally started turning on each other and bringing the claws out so let's take some time out to look at the best moments of last night joining me from our studio in new york is sarah bennett casa blogger for comedy central indecision and. and it was dot com thanks so much for coming on the show today we miss you it's been a while since we've had you on and you know sometimes these debates make me a little worried but these are the actual candidates for president in this world so i really need you to cheer me up here i know that you watched who do you think one . alone a you know i'm biased in favor of michele bachmann who is in addition to being the greatest human being on the planet my own personal spirit animal who i pray to every night when i meditate in my bedroom so i am always going to say that michel one however i will say that mitt romney came off the most presidential i really really liked how upset teeth paul was getting to paul and he was getting
10:06 pm
a little feisty and i found it rather seductive. i got i don't know presidential mitt romney still looks like if we have a car salesman if you ask me but let's move on to your favorite girl michele here's a question i'm going to play a clip of it was asked of her last night kind of had a lot of people up in a tizzy take a look what the lord said be submissive why don't you or could be submissive to your husbands as president would you be submissive to your husband. but if you think about when i was a perfectly rational question i've seen that book many times because she was giving a speech at one of these mega churches one of these holy living tabernacle of the waters of the sacred christ of mary in the sky and she said that you can watch it and that's where we're going to let me stop you there for
10:07 pm
a second because i was kind of sad about that at first so i could leave they actually after that i thought i was really paranoid they would never ask a guy if he was going to make his wife submit to her but then i also saw the clip where she actually said these words give our audience a look. just yeah you'd have to go. church hurry it slow slow anxious why should i go into something like this the worst yes the ship mission. is a church that's. a chance to watch a preliminary to last still there paul start. off. i yeah yeah yeah yeah that is actually really scary don't you think absolutely and in that same speech at a church she also talks about how she realized she wanted to married marcus bachmann her husband because she had a dream that god sent her and that god sent marcus the exact same dream on the
10:08 pm
exact same night i do not want this person leading my country she's full of fairy tales and creepy delusions i don't know it sounds to me like marcus bachmann maybe just has a way with words he said that they were out on a date he was trying to get in with her he was like well kidding i have that exact same dream to you and it might have just weren't part of. but the funny thing is that later on one of the candidates actually the candidate our favorite candidate we keep talking to him he went missing take a look at this are we actually missing a candidate on the stage. we are. going to be right back congresswoman bachmann there she is that's ok. ok. now since you are so in tune with michele bachmann where do you think she was where did she go. oh us ladies we take so long in the bathroom part
10:09 pm
of me wants to say that she was doing key events in the bathroom but then i realize that the republican debate so much like studio fifty four as. the d.m.v. so i assume she was just taken some deep breaths chillin out bringing it all and probably talking to christ probably you know on a little cell phone convo with mr jesus himself to find out what she should say next well i think about might be an option or we'll have to see if she files a police report again like she did a number of years ago and says that a group of lesbians actually held her hostage in a bathroom to do that but she was might be an option and we did see you know a lot of claws come out you were mentioning tim pawlenty he got pretty feisty and finally they moved on from just criticizing president obama all the time to going after each other except for new gingrich decided to go after someone else take a look at with one how do you wish to people who say that your campaign has been a mess. first of all chris that i took seriously broached injunction to put aside
10:10 pm
the talking points and i wish you would put aside the gotcha questions. because that is the thing. i guess it was you know what happened that newt gingrich learned that on the playground on the mean streets of whatever fancy place he grew up in i do think the question was phrased in a little bit of a ridiculous fashion i think it's a worthwhile question i think he could have said it differently and gotten his point across but gingrich i think later was like these mickey mouse questions which is just always adorable when a candidate invokes the name of the sacred and great mickey mouse to deride a fox news commentator i am always happy. you know there is one thing i was obviously just giving the media a hard time because the complete like to miss the foreign policy that was discussed but there is one thing that we've seen constantly from everything channel etc
10:11 pm
reporters there is all the food that's available in iowa they have fried everything it's so unhealthy but i think this one really really took it too far and you let me know we're going to show the audience it's. american. who. is really you guys thanks that's what you're wondering if you're producing t.v. produced for you or they produce again that's because. i can't decide if i should thank the producing team for producing at him there or for making all of us watch that i was most uncomfortable in that i've ever seen on t.v. . it hurts it hurts me alona
10:12 pm
that is going to ensure that i won't sleep for another six weeks thank you for showing me that again i thought i was over the trauma but i will never be over that moment. i don't think i'm quite over that either but you know we do what we can in order to try to get ourselves over the fact that these are the presidential candidates on the republican side so thank you so much for trying to cheer us up on that one tonight. thank you have a great night. now there is one presidential candidate who used to be the laughingstock of the g.o.p. ron paul is than i the oval office for the past thirty years and sticking to his same positions of that entire time but it seems as if there's been a change in how the public and the mainstream media perceive him he's no longer the outcast of the g.o.p. but rather a serious candidate parties christine presented takes us to ames i would see that ron paul's latest presidential run is going so far.
10:13 pm
he is a force to be reckoned with a three time presidential candidate congressman from texas o.b.-g.y.n. doctor and leader of the revolution. ron paul is now in iowa last week i was here at it again campaigning for two thousand and twelve some cost comes from a failed monetary system. and once again his fans have come from all corners of the country to hear his message and show support from kansas city missouri and. around myself and my family of four kids my wife las vegas a longtime critic of the federal government the constitution gives no authority for the federal government to run our educational systems and they should be doing it his policies are often told radical just think of how many nuclear weapons surround iran you chinese are there the indians or the pakistanis hear these realities are
10:14 pm
there the united states is there all these countries china has nuclear weapons why wouldn't it be natural that they might want to weapon but many of his entire establishment ideas are becoming increasingly mainstream as more and more americans reject the status quo of past decades especially his views on u.s. foreign policy in particular the us role in iraq and afghanistan resonate with voters i don't believe are there. security required i think we're realists a foreign the threat of terrorism is related to our foreign policy so i feel less safe because we're over there i never feel safer for the foreign policy that we have today while often touted by the mainstream media if i was a betting woman i think ron paul doesn't have a chance unfortunately for you but who is there is there a lack of enthusiasm over the top tier g.o.p. candidates another question about electability. do you have any surf there's always the question of whether you know. looks like they paid more attention to you this
10:15 pm
time around oh no they're moving my way his fans are some of the most loyal in american political history we've been following ron paul since eighty six perhaps since he was here. or persons. for thirty years is these not flip flop anything except the death penalty everything else rick constitutional robert taft barry goldwater so at least you know what your guilt and despite his seventy five years many of his fans look like this is the man you need to be president but i think he's a smart guy and i think you it changed things in need to be changed personally would you describe myself prior to being seeing ron paul in the early elections those election cycles a liberal democrat you saw him up on stage talking you know against against the war as against you know these violations or civil liberties i'm going to get across saying this or even this we need to fix the country we've maxed out our get ceiling
10:16 pm
as it is and there weren't too many countries and this is where it all happened a famous iowa straw poll here at iowa state university now ron paul has reportedly already sold thousands of tickets as we'll be spending most of tomorrow as people cast their votes most people here think he will do exceptionally well the question is can he come in first second answer will have to wait till tomorrow to find out reporting in ames iowa christine present r t. coming up somebody missing from last night's g.o.p. debate with texas governor rick perry is scheduled to announce his pick for the white house tomorrow does not like to focus on perry's record when it comes to capital punishment. into that american military mechanisms to do the work to bring justice or countability. i have every right to know what my government's true if you want to know why i pay taxes.
10:17 pm
but i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes see a story and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then you've lived something else here see some other part of it and realize that everything is all you don't know i'm trying hard luck is a big. say . let's not forget that we had an apartheid regime right now. i think even funny well.
10:18 pm
we never got that says they're going to keep you safe get ready because you give them your freedom. for. bay area rapid transit cops have earned quite a reputation for themselves and not an unalterable way after the outrageous
10:19 pm
behavior and blatantly is blatant displays of brutality by bart police allege people like oscar grant and charles hill dead people of san francisco have now taken to the streets to send their message that something has to be done. demonstrated to the manager this is surveillance video that supposedly shows what happened that night charles childers shot and killed that was july third the wrist some video so you can see here destructive protest there is truth and that was over the fourth of july weekend and the protests have continued since the recently protestors of notice of the bar police are catching on and they're attempting to stop these protests before they even get started and this time by asking service providers to cut off cell phone signals in the stations even the everyone seems to notice. the so-called service makes. it specially when you realized it was no. if you can't get anything here we see. you are actually.
10:20 pm
yeah what if something awful happened how can people call for help or inform their loved ones or the border cops that afraid of protesters that they're willing to put everyone's safety at risk not to mention that many are arguing at the bart police has no legal right to cut off cell phone service only federal agencies can block cell phone use and with that only under specific circumstances and personally i don't really buy statement if this was a voluntary blackout on the part of the service providers there we have a lot of leverage over these companies and security researcher christoffersen going points out bart has the power to terminate tower contracts in the future so it's hardly a polite request now in response the bar's actions and to the guards actions in an office are to launched operation bart so i guess i'm not the only one to find this disturbing and instead of actually addressing the problems which have created protests the killing of two innocent men and a long history of police brutality the bar simply tries to silence its critics. now there's one person who wasn't at the republican debate in iowa last night but who
10:21 pm
just might be joining a presidential race it's texas governor rick perry and most are expecting is announcement this saturday conveniently on the same day the ames straw poll comes out and since the reaction of the candidates. has been pretty lackluster perry seems like he just might be able to get the people support so how do you look at this tough talking gun toting super socially conservative small government advocate well maybe as a bit of a hypocrite see under perry's watch the state of texas carried out two hundred and thirty four executions and some of these cases out of cameron todd willingham the convicted prisoners may have been innocent but perry chose not to intervene while he fully supports the death penalty the hypocrisy comes in a not questioning this power of the government on the conviction may be faulty and yet a focus group of texas republicans one participant commented that it's quote takes balls to execute an innocent man so what does that say about perry and also about the kind of president that some republicans just might want joining me to discuss
10:22 pm
this is radley balko senior writer and investigative reporter for the huffington post rather i want to thank you for joining us tonight and for starters i want to ask you the same question that you asked on your blog tonight which is why is rick perry the poster boy for limited government. yeah i mean if you look at the death penalty like a government program you've got your you've got a guy in perry who you know discovered this program made a huge mistake possibly executed it is a person i mean this is the most probably solemn power we give to the state government to execute its own citizens and they may have killed an innocent person and kerry's response to that was you know not to alarm not you know we should get government less power because what happened here is response to that was to cover it up he you know not only did he insists that willingham was guilty he brought in a bunch of stuff about lincoln's character that you know the case i mean one of the state forensics commission tried to look into you know the bad evidence that was an interest that williams' trial harry replaced the committee members that were
10:23 pm
pushing for an investigation and replaced them with a bunch of. committee members who had a long history of being very pro prosecution in fact there are three that were former prosecutors so this is a guy who has a deferential to government in this case and this is probably the most awesome power that we've given the state government so my argument is that in conservatives who are rallying behind him or being sort of critical you may support the death penalty but you certainly can't support the possibility of executing people least i would hope not also think that all these republicans are being hypocritical or is there some kind of a breakdown that occurs for a lot of republicans where they say yes i like limited government in the case of making sure that we're tough on crime whatever works you know will let back out. you know when you when it comes to you know when you create a regulator or an f.d.a. regulation or a lot of conservatives or republicans you know they talk about public choice theory in the trappings of bureaucracy and you know the corruption of power when you talk
10:24 pm
about cops and prosecutors who are also government employees conservatives become very deferential and we should never question them we should never you know an interview that might and things are wrong or for the wrong reasons but i mean you know where you put the focus group guy you said that it takes politics and person you know that's the end that wasn't uncommon sense but in texas i actually interviewed the dallas county district attorney craig watkins actually trying to find is equal. were conducted before him and when henry wade was a sort of long time law and order. law and order right when he was an opposite court and blackens convicting an innocent person was considered sort of a badge of honor it was a testament to your prowess as a prosecutor that rockets taught me so you know that despite years and completely unheard of and you know i mean that the sentiment in the right when you get these stories is often well these are bad people who did other things wrong we're not you know shed many tears about it but if you look at the history of exonerations about
10:25 pm
it about three hundred or so on aeration is now majority of these people did not have a prior criminal record so that's that's a that's a red herring as well as i mean that's when the it takes balls to execute an innocent person and that's absolutely ludicrous i by no means can connect to it at all you said that that's really not all that uncommon in texas but is it only texas or do you think that there are some type of the thiele a nonstarter publicans in the country right now who lot of point to president obama and say that he's weak he's not a real leader and so that might actually draw more of them to someone like perry. well i mean i don't i don't i don't so i mean i write. on criminal justice issues as well i'm going to watch the back but all this stuff for you there are many he argued against a right to post addiction d.n.a. testing in the case is justice department of the other side of the case was one case where the supreme court. but you know i mean i think it takes balls to for a politician to you screwed up and you made a huge monumental mistake and you're going to you know what you can do to fix it
10:26 pm
that seems to take a lot more back out and probably why fewer of them do it. that's a good statement i like that i totally agree with you there but what do you think the chances are if perry does jump into the race on saturday as he says that he's going to help popular can think that he might be specially compared to the other candidates that are out there of which you know now this is the we've already seen the debate from last night and i we saw the debate in new hampshire and i don't think that they're looking all that impressive. you know when you know there are already i mean he's already considered front runner and he has that announced so you know clearly i think a lot of the right is lining up behind him and you know yeah i mean on the economy in texas has been strong so he's got a record to run on but you know i think there's some conservatives in terms i don't necessarily agree with on a lot of things actually have come out you know in criticize kerry on this issue in particular david brooks your times you know pretty stinging column about the death penalty related to the new yorker piece that expose this willing him case i think
10:27 pm
you'll see more of that i think you'll see more people sort of more kind of thoughtful people come out and say this is something that he needs to address and some of the instant fix. post i wrote today and actually it's a column i wrote earlier when i was with reason magazine and there's another case in texas where there's a guy we're d.n.a. testing could confirm his guilt or it could show him to be innocent and there are some significant questions skinner about as well he was hours away from execution and perry. is fighting d.n.a. testing in this case i mean it's really unfathomable to me that a governor would actually fight to you know not to remain out whether a guy is innocent i mean that to me is really sort of unforgivable you know it's one thing to support the death penalty it's the most thing to say we're going to execute this guy and you know we don't care to find out whether or not he's innocent and that is something that i think kerry needs to go or why jeff i think there are i hope that we start hearing our questions about that from other reporters now you mentioned well and have really had cases skinner case what about
10:28 pm
the case recently as well where a next can citizen was actually executed even though you know perry basically just spit in the face of international law there when it came to the fact that he should have been given the right to speak to the consulate how many other cases are there that really look so bad on kerry's record. well i mean there are lots of case sections where i mean no jealous county alone as i had seen more exonerate d.n.a. exonerations then in three states. i mean there's every reason for perry to be skeptical of his own come to state's criminal justice system and i wonder if you know it's making some pretty huge monumental errors here and again i mean is this because this cuts against everything insurance claim to stand for which is that you know you're supposed to be skeptical of government you're supposed to you know understand the government has enormous and awesome power and we're supposed to keep checks on it we're supposed to you know to monitor government's workers and make sure that they're making great decisions for reasons and very just turning
10:29 pm
a blind eye at all because i mean you know there are cases in places where public defenders are sleeping through trials or is one case where the prosecutor was sleeping with the judge during the trial i mean these are just. so i mean it's it's a very really needs to be out of the account of this and i mean if you're going to you know have the reins the entire country you know. he needs to correct his record in this or at least new people better explanation that you know yeah definitely you have a hypocrisy there in force they can't they have to surprise because republicans also say they don't like a lot of government they're interfering in our lives and yet they want to get your better of how they want to thank so much for joining us tonight. struck me on the. now so i can make our tools i'm seconds and i have a question that they want to ask during last night's g.o.p. debate and i recently found out that news corp the owner of fox news has used. to be allowed to use these machines are to open yet another door that says.
