arse over every single word that gets hurt by a night in iowa the republican presidential hopefuls take sam the each other and present the rock obama did anyone come out a clear winner tim bolen to try to break out of the pack he repeatedly zene to fellow minnesotan michele bachmann if there was a surprise performance it might have been newt gingrich's but the winner of the debate overall in terms of how it changes the election and what effect it has going forward is pretty obviously mitt romney. now don't get me wrong i watch the debate i'm covering it too i obviously think that it's important what it's him what is what is important is the stuff that actually sticks out the stuff that makes you want to laugh or the stuff that might want to make you cry and run in fear not the expected usual g.o.p. talking points about who loves the constitution more than the other and foreign policy is a great example of where we should be looking let's see we've been fighting a ten year war in afghanistan we're still in iraq we have drones in elite teams in
11:02 pm
pakistan yemen somalia and who knows where else and all the while social programs are going to be cut here at home to keep those wars going and foreign aid is going to be given out to whoever the flavor of the month is that we think promote stability worldwide until of course they do something wrong or their population are volts and they will drop that foreign leader like they're nothing so it's important to look at what these candidates would actually do if they assumed the ridiculously powerful role of commander in chief and rick santorum gave us a taste of that. iran is a country that musky be confronted i was in front of the i was in front of this curb i also the iran freedom support a second one to excuse me two thousand and four it was blocked by joe biden on the lesson brock obama once we got it passed and i can tell you if rick santorum and when rick santorum is president iran will not get a nuclear weapon because the world as we know it will be no more comes. to guys here that here we have another iran war hawk that basically said he's ready to get
11:03 pm
us involved in the war to make sure that iran doesn't get a nuclear weapon and we've already drained all of our resources fighting this endless war against the worldwide threat of al qaeda can we give the iran fear mongering a rest for a minute now i give big props to ron paul for calling santorum out on this last night you heard the war propaganda that is loud who would lead us into the sixth war and i worry about that position. i worry about that position to congressman paul everybody should worry about that position but you know who doesn't apparently the mainstream media these people spend hours going over every single word of these debates and when somebody says something that's actually crazy deserves to be questioned they just let it slide basically if we just found out that rick santorum would be open to getting us into another war if elected president something that this country and the world as a whole do not need and yet that something of the mainstream media has decided to miss.
11:04 pm
all right so we learn from the debate in iowa last night the g.o.p. presidential candidates have all studied their talking points when it comes to taxes abortion and how much president obama has sucked but we also learned that there is a lot to laugh about when it comes to this group of eight who finally started turning on each other and bringing the claws out so let's take some time out to look at the best moments of last night joining me from our studio in new york is sarah bennet casa blogger for comedy central indecision and. and why dot com sarah thanks so much for coming on the show today we miss you it's been a while since we've had you on and you know sometimes these debates make me a little worried that these are the actual candidates for president in this world so i really need you to cheer me up here i know that you watched who do you think one. a well known a you know i'm biased in favor of michele bachmann who is in addition to being the greatest human being on the planet my own personal spirit animal who i pray to
11:05 pm
every night when i meditate in my bedroom so i am always going to say that michelle won however i will say that mitt romney came off the most presidential i really really liked how upset teeth paul was getting tim paul and he was getting a little feisty and i found it rather seductive. i don't know presidential mitt romney looks like a sleazy car salesman if you ask me but let's move on to your favorite girl michele here's a question i want to play a clip of it was asked her last night that kind of had a lot of people up in a tizzy take a look what the lord said be submissive wives you are to be submissive to your husband as president would you be submissive to your house. what do you think about one i thought it was a perfectly rational question i've seen that quote many times because she was
11:06 pm
giving a speech at one of these mega churches one of these holy living tabernacle of the waters of the sacred christ of mary in the sky and she said that you can watch it now that's when you're actually doing that let me stop you there for a second because i was kind of sad about that at first so i could leave actually after that i thought that was really fair because they would never ask a guy if he was going to make his wife submit to her but then i also saw the clip where she actually said these words let's give our audience a look. my husband said you know you need to go get a whole structure to treat it to slow ten sloshy chances why should you go into something like that the words yes should be should write a short piece of this is your distance and so we moved to virginia beach virginia and i went to live with mary saw still there for cool stuff to actually off. i yeah yeah yeah i that is actually really scary don't you think. absolutely and in
11:07 pm
that same speech at a church she also talks about how she realized she wanted to marry marcus bachmann her husband because she had a dream that god sent her and that god sent marcus the exact same dream on the exact same night i do not want this person leading my country she's full of fairy tales and creepy delusions i don't know it sounds to me like marcus bachmann maybe just has a way with words he said that they were out on a date he was trying to get in with our and he was like no kidding i have that exact same dream too and it might have just worked for him. but the funny thing is that later on one of the candidates actually the candidate our favorite candidate we keep talking about him he went missing take a look at this are we actually missing a candidate on the stage. we are. to be right back congresswoman bachmann there she is that's ok. ok.
11:08 pm
now since you are so in tune with michele bachmann where do you think she was where did she go. oh us ladies we take so long in the bathroom part of me wants to say that she was doing key bumps in the bathroom but then i realize that the republican debate isn't so much like studio fifty four as. the d.m.v. so i assume she was just taken some deep breaths chillin out bringing it all and probably talking to christ probably you know on a little cell phone convo with mr jesus himself to find out what she should say next while i think about might be an option or we'll have to see if she files a police report again like she did a number of years ago and says that a group of lesbians actually held her hostage in a bathroom to that might be an option we did see you know a lot of claws come out you were mentioning tim pawlenty he got pretty feisty finally they moved on from just criticizing president obama all the time to going
11:09 pm
after each other except for newt gingrich decided to go after someone else take a look at this one. how do you respond to people who say that your campaign has been not so well researched first of all chris that i took seriously broach injunction to put aside the talking points and i wish you would put aside the gotcha questions. was that is the thing. i guess it was you know as snap that newt gingrich learned back on the playground in the mean streets of whatever fancy place he grew up in. i do think the question was phrased in a little bit of a ridiculous fashion i think it's a worthwhile question i think he could have said it differently and got his point across but gingrich i think later was like these mickey mouse questions which is just always adorable when a candidate invokes the name of the sacred and great mickey mouse to deride a fox news commentator i am always happy. now there is one thing i was obviously
11:10 pm
just giving the media a hard time because they completely like to miss the foreign policy that was discussed but there is one thing that we've seen constantly from every single channel and send their reporters there is all the food that's available in iowa they have fried everything it's so unhealthy but i think this one really really took it too far and you let me know we're going to show the audience audience. american. wow that is really you guys thanks that's what you're wondering if you're producing t.v. they produce for you or they produce. i can't decide if i should thank the
11:11 pm
producing team for producing at him there or for making all of us watch that was most uncomfortable in what i've ever seen on t.v. . it hurts it hurts me alone that is going to ensure that i won't sleep for another six weeks thank you for showing me that again i thought i was over the trauma but i will never be over that moment. i don't think i'm quite over that either but you know we do what we can in order to try to get ourselves over the fact that these are the presidential candidates on the republican side so i thank you so much for trying to cheer us up on that one tonight. thank you have a great night. now there is one presidential candidate who used to be the laughing stock of the g.o.p. ron paul he's been eyeing the oval office for the past thirty years and sticking to his same positions of that entire time but it seems as if there's been a change in how the public and the mainstream media perceive that he is no longer the outcast of the g.o.p.
11:12 pm
but rather a serious candidate artie's christine for his out takes us to ames i want to see how ron paul's latest presidential run is going so far. he is a force to be reckoned with a three time presidential candidate congressman from texas o.b.-g.y.n. doctor and leader of a revolution. ron paul is now in iowa last week. at it again campaigning for two thousand and twelve the booms and busts comes from a failed monetary system to work and once again his fans have come from all corners of the country to hear his message. and show support from kansas city missouri and we're here to support ron paul myself and my family of four kids and my wife drove up from las vegas a long time critic of the federal government the constitution gives no authority for the federal government to run our educational systems and they should be doing
11:13 pm
at these policies are often called radical just think of how many nuclear weapons surround iran did the chinese are there the indians that pakistan is there the israelis are there the united states is there all these countries china has nuclear weapons why wouldn't it be natural that they might want to weapon but many of his entire establishment ideas are becoming increasingly mainstream as more and more americans reject the status quo of past decades especially his views on u.s. foreign policy in particular the us role in iraq and afghanistan resonate with voters i don't believe our our national security required it i think we're realists say for it the threat of terrorism is related to our foreign policy so i feel less safe because we're over there i never feel safer for the foreign policy that we have today while often doubted by the mainstream media if i was a betting woman i say ron paul doesn't have a chance unfortunately for you but who is there is there
11:14 pm
a lack of enthusiasm over some the top tier g.o.p. candidates another question about electability. do you have a nice or there is always the question of whether you are in fact viable looks like they paid more attention to you this time around oh now they're moving my way his fans are some of the most loyal in american political history we've been following ron paul since eighty six perhaps since he was here and there are some who say rightly running for the presidency or united states for thirty years his he's not flip flop that anything except the death penalty everything else huge rick constitutional robert taft barry goldwater so. at least you know what your guilt and despite his seventy five years many of his fans look like this is the man he needs to be president well i think he's a smart guy and i think he would change things and need to be changed personally would describe myself prior to being seen ron paul in the zero eight election so
11:15 pm
election cycles are a liberal democrat you know but i saw him up on stage talking you know against against the wars against you know these violations over civil liberties and why why are the democrats saying this or even this we need to fix the country we've maxed out our get ceiling as it is and then weren't too many countries and this is where it all happens a famous iowa straw poll here at iowa state university now ron paul has reportedly already sold thousands of tickets this is where he'll be spending most of tomorrow as people cast their votes most people here think he will do exceptionally well the question is can he come in first if the answer will have to wait till tomorrow to find out for porting in ames iowa christine for our team. coming up somebody missing from last night's g.o.p. debate with texas governor rick perry is scheduled to announce his bid for the white house tomorrow he's not going to focus on perry's record when it comes to capital punishment.

like oscar grant and charles hill dead the people of san francisco is now taking to the streets to send their message that something has to be done to demonstrators are demanding the release the surveillance video that supposedly shows what happened the night charles hill the shot and killed that was july third there is some video you can see here disruptive protest there. now that was over the fourth of july weekend and the protests have continued since but recently protesters of notice of the bar police are catching on that they're attempting to stop these protests before they even get started and this time by asking service providers to cut off cell phone signals in the stations a good thing everyone seemed to notice was a sudden lack of so-called services because that. is specially when you realized it was not a random if you can get anything serious even if you are absolutely nothing. yeah what if something awful happened how can people call for help or inform their
11:18 pm
loved ones or the border cops that afraid of protesters that they're willing to put everyone's safety at risk not to mention that many are arguing at the bart police has no legal right to cut off cell phone service only federal agencies can block cell phone use and with that only under specific circumstances i personally i don't really buy bart statement that this was a voluntary blackout on the part of the service providers they actually have a lot of leverage over these companies and security researcher christoffersen going points out bart has the power to terminate our contracts in the future so it's hardly a polite request now in response the bar's actions and to the bars actions and on offices already launched operation bart so i guess i'm not the only one that finds this to. but instead of actually addressing the problems which have created protests the killing of two innocent men and a long history of police brutality the bart simply tries to silence its critics. now there's one person who wasn't at the republican debate in iowa last night but who just might be joining the presidential race it's texas governor rick perry the
11:19 pm
most are expecting his announcement this saturday conveniently on the same day that the ames straw poll comes out and since the reaction to the candidates us far has been pretty lackluster perry seems like he just might be able to get the people support so how do you look at those tough talking gun toting super socially conservative small government advocate well maybe as a bit of a hypocrite see under perry's watch the state of texas carried out two hundred and thirty four executions and some of these cases like that of cameron todd willingham the convicted prisoners may have been innocent but perry chose not to intervene now while he fully supports the death penalty the hypocrisy comes in and not questioning this power of the government when the conviction may be faulty and yet at a focus group of texas republicans one participant commented that it's quote takes balls to execute an innocent man so what does that say about perry and also about the kind of president that some republicans just might want joining me to discuss this is radley balko senior writer and investigative reporter for the huffington
11:20 pm
post rather i want to thank you for joining us tonight and for starters i want to ask you the same question that you asked on your blog tonight which is why is rick perry the poster boy for limited government. yeah i mean if you look at the death penalty like a government program you've got here you've got a guy in perry who you know this covered this program a huge mistake they possibly executed it as a person i mean this is the most probably solemn power we give to a state government to execute its own citizens in may and may have killed an innocent person and kerry's response to that was you know not to alarm not you know we should give government less power because what happened here is response to that was to cover it up he you know not only did he insists that willingham was guilty he brought in a bunch of stuff about williams' character that doesn't do the case and then one of the state forensics commission tried to look into you know the bad evidence that was introduced at williams trial perry replaced the committee members that were
11:21 pm
pushing for an investigation and replaced them with a bunch of three committee members who had a long history of being very pro prosecution back there all three of them are former prosecutors so this is a guy who has a deferential government in this case and this is probably the most awesome power that we give to the state government so my argument is that i think conservatives who are rallying behind him are being sort of a critical you may support the death penalty but you certainly can't support the possibility of executing innocent people least i would hope not well so i mean do you think that all these republicans are being hypocritical or is there some kind of a breakdown that occurs for a lot of republicans where they say yes i like limited government in the case of making sure that we're tough on crime whatever works you know we'll let that go. you know when when it comes to you know when u.p.a. a regulator or an f.d.a. regulator a lot of conservatives or republicans you know they talk about public choice theory and the trappings of bureaucracy and you know the the the corruption of power when
11:22 pm
you talk about cops and prosecutors who are also government employees conservatives become very deferential and we should never question them we should never you know an interview that might do things wrong or for the wrong reasons but i mean you know the focus group use of them to expose the executer innocent person in that that's the end that wasn't uncommon sentiment in texas i actually interviewed the dallas county district attorney craig watkins actually trying to find innocent people who were convicted before him and when henry wade was a sort of long time law and order hero law and order right when he was in office of courting to walk ins convicting an innocent person was considered sort of a badge of honor it was a testament to your prowess as a prosecutor this is what watkins told me so you know this idea isn't completely unheard of and you know i mean that the sentiment in the right when you hear these stories is often well these are bad people who did other things wrong so we're not going to you know shed many tears about it but if you look at the history of exonerations about that about three hundred d.n.a.
11:23 pm
exonerations now vast majority of these people did not have a prior criminal record so that's that's a that's a red herring as well now to me that statement that it takes balls to execute an innocent person and that's absolutely ludicrous i by no means can connect to it at all you said that that's really not all that uncommon in texas but is it only texas or do you think that there is some type of the feeling among republicans in the country right now who want to point to president obama and say that he's weak he's not a real leader and so that might actually draw more of them to sell unlike perry. well i mean i don't i don't i don't i mean i have i have my problems with obama on criminal justice issues as well i mean i don't want to use that much of a backbone on all this stuff either i mean he he argued against a right to post conviction d.n.a. testing and in death on. you know it's just justice department argued the other side of the case the point is well the supreme court but you know i mean i think it takes balls to for a politician to make you screwed up and you made a huge monumental mistake and you're going to you know do what you can to fix it
11:24 pm
but it seems to me to take more backbone and probably why fewer of them do it. that's a good statement i like that i totally agree with you there but what do you think the chances are if perry does jump into the race on saturday as he says that he's going to how popular thing think that he might be can especially compared to the other candidates that are out there of which you know now this is the we've already seen the debate from last night and i we saw the debate in new hampshire and i don't think that they're looking all that impressive. you know when you know there are already i mean he's already considered a front runner and he hasn't announced yet so you know clearly i think a lot of the right is lining up behind him and you know i mean on the economy in texas has been strong so he's got that record to run on but you know i think some conservatives and service i don't necessarily agree with on a lot of things actually have come out you know and criticized kerry on this issue in particular david brooks new york times you know pretty stinging column about the death penalty related to the new yorker piece that expose was willing in case and i
11:25 pm
think you'll see more of that i think you'll see more people sort of more kind of thoughtful people on the right come out and say this is something that he needs to address and somebody needs to fix on the one post i wrote today and actually it's a column i wrote earlier when i was look the reason magazine i mean there's another case in texas where there's a guy we're d.n.a. testing could confirm his guilt or it could show him to be innocent and there are some significant questions this guy skinner about his guilt at one point he was hours away from execution and perry. is fighting d.n.a. testing in this case i mean it's really unfathomable to me that a governor with actually fight to you know not to remain ignorant about whether a guy is innocent or not i mean that's me is really sort of unforgivable you know it's one thing to support the death penalty it's moving to say we're going to execute this guy and you really don't care to find out whether or not he's innocent and that is something any i think kerry needs to be held accountable for why i guess i think the are i hope that we start hearing more questions about that from other reporters now you mentioned the will and will have case that skinner case
11:26 pm
what about the case recently as well where a mexican citizen was actually executed even though you know perry basically just spit in the face of international law there when it came to the fact that he should've been given the right to speak to the consulate how many other cases are there that really look so bad on perry's parents record. well i mean there are lots of cheese in texas where i mean you know dallas county alone as i had seen more exonerate d.n.a. exonerations than all but i think three states so that mean there's every reason for perry to be skeptical of his own from the state's criminal justice system and to to wonder if you know it's making some pretty huge monumental errors here and again i mean this this goes this cuts against everything conservatives claim to stand for which is that you know you're supposed to be skeptical of government you're supposed to you know understand the government has enormous and awesome power and we're supposed to keep checks on and we're supposed to you know to monitor government workers and make sure that they're making the right decisions for the right reasons and very just turning
11:27 pm
a blind eye to all of this i mean you know there you've got cases in texas where the demands are sleeping through trials or is one case where the prosecutor was sleeping with the judge during the trial i mean these are just. so i mean it's. very really needs to be able to help to account in this and i mean if you're going to you know have the reins of the entire country you know. he needs to correct his record on this or at least give a better explanation than you know so yeah definitely you have a hypocrisy there in force they can't say i'm too surprised because republicans also say they don't like a lot of government they're interfering in their lives and yet they want to get in your bedroom rather i want to thank so much for joining us tonight. because it's an expression on the. now set of. makes our tool time segments and i have a question that they want to ask during last night's g.o.p. debate and i recently found out that news corp the owner of fox news has used drone so should private companies they allowed to use these machines are to open yet another door to spy on us citizens thanks for that topic and for some.
11:28 pm
