it's the grand imperial truth the torch was pushed coromandel you can a letter tell a joke it's a duty to go and. read this in the kenilworth hotel as a treat. the former egyptian president answers charges of corruption and ordering killings in a car of course but many who acted to depose him say little has changed since he left. investors worldwide ready to buy u.s. government bonds in defiance of a debt mocked up and that left markets in shambles crazy tough questions over the trustworthiness of credit rating agencies. and neo nazis strike ukranian football matches unleashing brutal violence and stadiums pleading to peers who can could ruin the european championships to be held there next year.

cordoned off by riot police those caught protesting the use of public disturbance in the illiterate trials in the last seven months there have been more people put on military trials than the number of people that were put under president of the. president of war so that syrian president mubarak's regime individually of course there are thousands of cases that have been put. been arrested and put on child and sentenced within the span of two to five these sent horrible sentences starting from three years up to twenty five years that's currently four had still haven't healed but these activists believes he got off lightly from season counter with the police a month ago the son of the former presidential contender who was jailed by the more barak's regime nourse as the new authorities are just a brutal eight version of the all it's extremely clear that there is very little

difference between the people who are ruling and hosting the world and that many of the crimes the whole thing were committed to his people are currently being committed to us now by the people who are ruling with the disguise of the revolution he gives these bloody t. shirt as a reminder that the egyptian revolution is far from over the former president is now on trial for his role in the mass killings but the broad is still being spilled on the streets of cairo. artsy. the current contenders for the presidential elections in egypt offer no chance of major political changes asia times correspondent pepe escobar. the fact that mubarak is in a cave in he's being on trial this could be the beginning of the new middle east but we don't know what's going to happen deal actions because if dearie gene triumphs in your actions and if we have somebody like the artwork's

a new study released former secretary of the arab league or even mohammed el baradei it was called those who are doing muslim brotherhood or even another candidate which is a region candidate raef arabs and we good p.r. some fairly in washington d.c. for instance we are seeing a sense of change and this is what the career square protesters do will be with their eyes full cause leaves are focus on destroying all sides. well still to come on the program this hour universe saw the version of peace activists in israel for a new conflict with lebanon saying the government wants to divert attention from its own blunders. and the spill that's being kept under wraps a ruptured pipeline just off the coast of scotland is make more than two hundred tons of oil into the north sea in just five days with no end in sight. the decision to cut america's debt rating sparked chaos in the world markets with
3:07 pm
panic needing to trillions worth of sign offs but the move led to a drop in the shares of standard and poor's itself investors rocked by freshly downgraded u.s. treasury bonds he meant to ask what grade the rating agencies deserve themselves lauren mr reports. breaking news the united states has just lost its top notch triple a credit rating from it was the downgrade heard around the world in a strong reaction to the rating downgrade. us well it's that standard and poor's took the u.s. from straight triple a student to one notch below zero for the first time ever bad marks were handed down for the nation's debt and politicians inability to agree on rein it in a two party downgrade a lot of it has to do with the failure of the president a stage i think this is a tea party problem with the greater in chief says the u.s. is becoming more unpredictable and.
3:08 pm
still work response from the downgrade or that helped ratchet up the the yeah tricks of the debt ceiling debate but the help of the other ratings agencies of course stealing the show from bickering politicians with their eyes on the debt deal they may be missing really a larger concern because there is growing evidence today that the u.s. credit score is going to get hit now that the u.s. has gotten hit just how much does s. and p's mark actually count well not much according to some like investor jim rogers but it's not because the country isn't broke america's going down the tubes we're the largest debtor nation in the history of the world it's because of the source these late rating agencies have been wrong about nearly everything for the past ten or fifteen years don't pay any attention to them so just how does the report card stack up for the major ratings agencies themselves they are s. and p. moody's and fitch let's assess test one the mortgage crisis of two thousand and eight these are the same agencies that rated the toxic sub prime dead aaa so i mean
3:09 pm
how do we take them with any level of credibility after that. well let's see if they get any from tess to the too big to fail banks and insurers during the financial crisis. a big bankruptcy is a good investment. the women bear stearns right to the very g. they gave a aaa rating to. good grades for firms that collapsed or were bailed out because of bad debt in fact the financial crisis inquiry commission said the three credit ratings agencies were key enablers of the financial meltdown and this brings us to test three ethics ratings agencies are paid by the investment firms they grade and moody's and s. and p. are publicly traded which means they may be more driven to increase profits for shareholders raising this debate right now you have the companies that are being judged for paying the bill and i'm rounding a big old version of mr buffett also pointed out the market requires it because
3:10 pm
these ratings agencies has been around forever so they're in shrine by government regulations which oh yeah they have a stake in test for objectivity for legislation financial reform. and rating agencies and the rules that are yet to be written and they carry huge view about what those rules and. it would surprise me if they were trying to curry favor with politicians in fact they spent a combined total of one point seven six million dollars this year lobbying washington over the regulations which brings us full circle to the downgrade of u.s. credit the u.s. was downgraded by a impede because of government debt burden member of the government ran up that debt in part because it bailed out the big banks then a.i.g. back in two thousand and eight the one saddled with all of those bad mortgage bonds which the ratings agencies graded triple a when in reality they were a d. or an hour which makes you wonder if the ratings agencies themselves deserve
3:11 pm
a downgrade lauren lyster r. t. washington d.c. . and they're returning now to our top story. developments in egypt and for more analysis there in the country i'm joined from caro bardach sultan he's the director of the center. political and strategic studies thank you very much doctor for joining us live. we talk about mubarak's trial just like to ask you how you think the situation around the country is going to change after the promised upcoming elections and will it be an outcome that the west will welcome. well it's a big question mark one million. because there are there is a concern about the rise of islamic forces and differently in the midst. of the worst i think there are some in the west who are concerned about the rise of the islamic world means the challenge that we are all facing now with. a new
3:12 pm
political reality because there is some political forces who are never been in politics before now they are already political actors i'm not talking here about the muslim brotherhood but also talking about the. movement which turned out to be . conservative radical. somewhat violent so now there will be in the grassroots level and this is a concern in egypt and different it's a concern. that is a big loser about what could have been and what kind of results. this might have let's talk about what's happening now barack stroll we know that the charges suspended live television coverage of the next hearing and there's been speculation about the reasons for that why do you think this decision was made and what impact could that have on the trial and indeed the reaction from the egyptian people.
3:13 pm
i think it will help to bring their prior. to all of that because there have been too many lawyers willing to participate in this trial in different capacities basically some pretty t.v. prior met. with the absence of t.v. many of those lawyers and organizations are likely to disappear and make the trial itself easy and smooth but on the other hand there are some people on the bottle or are concerned about about this decision they are saying about things that might happen behind closed doors even though it will still a public public trial but not aired on t.v. are you meaning for your earlier interreligious or is watching you actually a little fact that they may not receive a fair trial if this is done behind closed doors without any t.v. coverage. well again the prior will continue to be a public trial it will be under the eyes of the media and of the public but not
3:14 pm
will not be on the t.v. will not be immediately on t.v. when everybody can see it at home or some private somebody some people are concerned about with and this will be a fair trial or on the other hand the others are concerned about. stability is all very. making games or deals or some sort of that's kind of development but there are some other issues he is really it's very important because apparently is a judge in this trial is going to invite a number of prominent officials in different egyptian government from the military and from the civilian side to this to fight in this court and apparently it has had just don't want to make it a kind of a circus where are the witnesses who are now occupying or assuming of special positions exchanging. accusations and. a bad or not that's nice well first would be like
3:15 pm
a circus perhaps under apparently that is judge wants to avoid such a kind of drama was apparently by making his decision by not putting the trial on air. as we started i did ask you about your your predictions about the forthcoming elections and what impact that could have. in the immediate future of the country but i just want to ask you now about the long term future of egypt will this revolution be seen as a positive chapter in the country's history just finally. a good many things on what will happen in the coming months there would be election there will. be influence. how big how much increase of the. influence of the islamists we have to see but it will depend on the kind of balance of power the easier. this election. is really. not religious but happiness and.
3:16 pm
perhaps. you. will be happy to have a future for anybody that is. thanks so much for your time thank you for joining us live in current. royal dutch shell has admitted at least two hundred sixteen tons of oil of leaked into the sea just off the coast of scotland the spill which began five days ago was only acknowledged party oil giant two days later and is still ongoing i'm now joined by adam ramsey he's event manager of the people planet's student organization for his view on what's behind the silence thanks very much indeed for being with us now for today's show refused to acknowledge there had been a spill and only after five days did it give any details why do you think this lack
3:17 pm
of communication. i think the people who are used to dealing with cho wouldn't be surprised at all about the lack of communication it's worth remembering that it was only a few days ago that they admitted after years of lawyers and cover up their role in the enormous spills across nigeria this company has never let the truth or in fact people's lawyers or the environment get in the way of getting the way of their profit margins one official estimate certainly we should be surprised but yeah ok well the official estimates put the split two hundred sixteen tons two hundred sixteen tons of oil over an area of one hundred square miles and as you just touched on the tradition of actually under playing the spill size is not giving the full facts tell us how do you perceive the situation just how serious is this oil spill. i think the first thing to say is that we don't know yet the only real information seems to be coming from shell themselves and as you say they don't have a great history in being honest about these things and certainly not. in the short
3:18 pm
term so so i think we certainly don't know for sure how bad it is but we do know that this is a serious bill we know for certain it is the worst spill in this country in more than a decade we know that it's going to have serious impact both on the environment across across that area of the north sea with breeding season for herds and we also know that the local fishery communities up the northeast has gotten going to be really terrified by the impacts on their industry so we don't know for sure and i think also if you look at the broader context it's surely got to have an impact on legislators as shells seek to expand into the arctic itself and other oil companies looking all round the world if they can't even keep their sources of oil they're all worlds in the u.k. safe and what does that say about their prospects in some of the most dangerous cities in the world what i thought and very interesting is that we're talking about it now saying that this actually occurred quite a few days ago i've been looking at a lot of the websites concerning british news not much on there up until now just
3:19 pm
how much coverage are you seeing there in the u.k. media. i've seen very little coverage of this at all and i'm saddened to say that i'm not at all surprised how little coverage has been of this also as i said it's the biggest in ten years but it's important to remember that the u.k. government who have a lot of remit over this that is going to government have done everything they can to cover it up people might have seen footage of the scottish first minister alex salmond telling everyone that cell had this under control the u.k. government's done very little to raise the profile of this and again that's not something we should be surprised by the u.k. government and the scottish government oppose got long histories of being hand in hand and in the pockets of the odd industry in this country and so if you government to the only other potential monitors of this and to keep it quiet in the shell particularly not talking about it it's not surprising that the media aren't covering it so again again not surprising but very sad as you say
3:20 pm
a major incident really not reported in the u.k. press ok well it's very interesting here we have to say out of ramsey thanks very much indeed for joining us live there in the u.k. events manager of people and planet thanks very much indeed thank you. a recent match at dinamo kiev will be remembered not only for goals but also for the brutal nazi influence violence which flared up at the stadium this latest incident is added to fears that racists and hooligans made small european football championship the ukraine co-host next year and as artie's alexy have just you know not as in has deep roots in the country's football fan culture. the beautiful game turned ugly in the second half of genomics here first partly one of several dozen fans brutally attacked as jew word he was trying to take down banners supporting world war two insurgent army leaders. and romance which under he says he was simply trying to force the law yet of the. burners and the fans to remove them this

police are often seen in the nationalist marches at times carrying symbols for didn't buy food bowl organizations in europe some experts blame the trend on the ideology of the previous administration over the. ultra nationalism has been radicalized in ukraine because for five years it's been strongly supported by the ruling elite no ultra rights movements or infiltrating football supporters and nobody does anything either the authorities know the football clubs they do know marquis of clubs as it carries no direct responsibility for the incident with andre green's people he was not forbidden by law to chant slogans like glory to ukraine clarissa heroes death to enemies these laws unite fans in ukraine everything to avoid incidents like this one those people are provocateurs and will oust them from grains it's an excuse that would not stand up next year when ukraine and poland

co-host the european football championship with the eyes of europe focused on key betters commemorating the likes of them that i'm sure each if still a feature and twenty twelve could seriously harm the country's reputation for instance poland has no second opinion about. i'm calling them nazi war criminals with less than a year remaining until kiev holds the final game of the euro twenty championship it's a brand new stadium looks set to be completed on schedule the question is whether the authorities would be able to use their remaining time to get rid of hooliganism and racism not tolerated in europe if not experts say then give could face serious sanctions from the european football governing bodies. r.t. reporting from kiev ukraine. seven russian service men have been severely injured after militants open fire and of attachment of troops in the republican. caucuses. in the region. according to what we know so far was the real
