a more pure and. well in the age of right now if the date of those gunned down prior to mubarak's resignation celebrated its patriots who lives with the rider future of their country those killed after his ousting sometimes are very serious criminals to undermine that country's democratic strides and it doesn't matter that they share the same goals and they each of these days just this is about power and not the other way around this young man also counted himself among the children of the revolution because his older brother he celebrated mubarak's departure from power or to fear of taking it for the and to the police state three months later he was killed and what his brother believes was a government sanctioned shoot out there and his little bubble and on the snipers showed my brother dead the bullet went through his forehead and it came out on the side and i saw it no one here has a weapon like this. only soldiers do like families of victims whose deaths are now

being pinned on mubarak these people receive no monetary compensation for their laws in fact they're increasingly worried that the new military authorities may persecute them studs is became an all encompassing term for those who don't appreciate the ruling military click and as most of us are bodies we expected the army to intervene to protect people just took mines but instead they started to kill people themselves who didn't expect. that the supreme council of the armed forces as an interim caretaker when mubarak stepped down brought to power by the protests the generals nevertheless don't show much liking for mass gatherings the cradle of the egyptian revolution is now cordoned off by riot police those caught protesting accused of public disturbance and sent to military trials in the last seven months there have been more people put on military trials than the number of

people that were put on the president of the. president of war so that's really president mubarak's regime individually of course there are thousands of cases that have been put. been arrested and put on trial and sentenced within the span of two to five days sent horrible sentences starting from three years up to twenty five years a score of his forehead still hasn't healed but these activists believes he got off lightly from he's encountered with the police a month ago a son of the former presidential contender who was jailed by the mubarak's regime nourse as the new authorities are just a brutalized version of the all it's extremely clear that there is very little difference between the people who are ruling us know. that many of the crimes the hosting were committed. to his people are currently being committed to

us now by the people who are ruining it with the disguise of the revolution it is these bloody t. shirt as a reminder that the egyptian revolution is far from over the former president is now on trial for his role in the mass killings but the body is still being built on the streets of cairo it's not a boycott art it's up to. the current contenders for the presidential elections in egypt off a no chance of major political change says asia times correspondent pepe escobar the fact that mubarak is in a cage and he's been on trial that this could be the beginning of the new middle east but we don't know what's going to happen in deal actions because if dearie gene try and skin deal actions if we have somebody like the airports and the. former secretary of the arab league or even mohamed el baradei it was composing with the muslim brotherhood or even another candidate which is the region candidate revamps and we good p.r. right some firm in washington d.c.

for instance not sense of change and this is what the real square protesters do beat with their eyes full cause lee's are full course on this trial at all times. well still to come on the program this hour universal diversion peace activists in israel a new conflict with lebanon saying the government wants to divert attention from its own blunders. and the spill that's being kept under wraps a ruptured pipeline just off the coast of scotland this week more than two hundred tons of oil into the north sea in just five days with no end in sight. the decision to cut america's debt rating sparked chaos in the world markets with panic needing to trillions worth of but the move led to a drop in the shares of standard and poor's itself what investors flock to buy freshly downgraded u.s. treasury bonds leaving many to ask what grade the rating agencies deserve
3:07 pm
themselves. reports. breaking news the united states has just lost its top notch triple a credit rating from it was the downgrade heard around the world in a strong reaction to the rating downgrade gold and u.s. well it's dead standard and poor's took the u.s. from straight aaa student to one not below for the first time ever bad marks were handed down for the nation's debt and politicians inability to agree on reigning it in a tea party downgrade a lot of it has to do with the failure of the present united states i think this is a tea party problem the greater in chief says the u.s. is becoming a bit more unpredictable and. proposed to some of the other governments that were a stoic response from the downgrade or that helped to ratchet up that the yeah tricks of the debt ceiling debate with the help of the other ratings agencies of course stealing the show from bickering politicians with their eyes on the debt deal they may be missing really
3:08 pm
a larger concern because there is growing evidence today that the u.s. credit score is going to get hit now that the u.s. has gotten hit just how much does s. and p's mark actually count well not much according to some like investor jim rogers but it's not because the country isn't broke america is going down the tubes where the largest debtor nation in the history of the world it's because of the source these late rating agencies have been wrong about nearly everything for the past ten or fifteen years don't pay any attention to them so just how does the report card stack up for the major ratings agencies themselves they are s. and p. moody's and fitch let's assess test one the mortgage crisis of two thousand and eight these are the same agencies that rated the toxic subprime debt aaa so i mean how do we take them with any level of credibility after that. well let's see if they get any from tess to the too big to fail banks and insurers during the

financial crisis that missed many of the big bankruptcies they gave high investment . greetings to lehman to bear stearns right to the very g. they gave a aaa rating to two almost the day it collapsed good grades for firms that collapsed or were bailed out because of bad debt in fact the financial crisis inquiry commission said the three credit ratings agencies were key enablers of the financial meltdown and this brings us to test three ethics ratings agencies are paid by the investment firms they grade and moody's and s. and p. are publicly traded which means they may be more driven to increase profits for shareholders raising this debate right now you have the companies that are being judge of paying the bill and i'm running a big old bird but mr buffett also pointed out the market requires it because these ratings agencies has been around forever so they're in shrine by government regulations which oh yeah they have a stake in test for objectivity for. financial reform has
3:10 pm
restrictions on rating agencies and the rules that are yet to be written and they care a huge deal about what those rules end up looking like saw it wouldn't surprise me if they were trying to curry favor with certain politicians in fact they've spent a combined total of one point seven six million dollars this year lobbying washington over the regulations which brings us full circle to the downgrade of u.s. credit the u.s. was downgraded by s. and p. because of government debt member the government ran up that debt in part because it bailed out the big banks and a.i.g. back in two thousand and eight remember the one saddled with all of those bad mortgage bonds which the ratings agencies graded triple a when in reality they were a d. or an after which makes you wonder if the ratings agencies themselves deserve a downgrade lauren lester r.t. washington d.c. . and returning now to our top story. the developments in egypt and for more analysis there in the country i'm joined from caro bardach. he's

the director of the center. political and strategic studies thank you very much doctor for joining us live in cairo before we talk about mubarak's trial just like to ask you how you think the situation there in the country is going to change after the promised upcoming elections and will it be an outcome that the west will welcome. well it's a big question mark the one million dollar question now in egypt because there are there is a concern about the rise of islam it forces and differently the mr a lot. of the west at least there are some in the west who are concerned about the rise of the islamic woman the challenge that we are all facing now in. a new political reality because there is some political mr mcwatters who haven't been in politics before now they are already political activism not talking here about the

muslim brotherhood but also talking about the. movement to be a quiet conservative radical. somewhat violent to now there will be the grassroots level and this is a concern in egypt and definitely it's a concern. there is a big confusion about what could have been and what kind of results. this might have let's talk about what's happening now mubarak's trial we know that the judge just suspended live television coverage of the next hearing and there's been speculation about the reasons for that why do you think this decision was made and what impact could that have on the trial and indeed the reaction from the egyptian people. i think it will help to bring that. to order because there have been too many lawyers willing to but this trial in different

capacities basically to win some pretty mad. with the absence of t.v. many of those lawyers and organizations are likely to disappear and make that trial itself easy and smooth but on the other hand there are some people of the public are concerned about about this decision there are saying about things that might happen behind closed doors even though it will still a bubbly public trial but not aired on t.v. are you meaning for your earlier interreligious or is roger you actually losing the fact that they may not receive a fair trial if this is done behind closed doors without any t.v. coverage. well again the trial will continue to be a public trial it will be under the eyes of the media and of the public but not will not be on the t.v. will not be immediately on t.v. when everybody can see it at home so somebody somebody some people are concerned about with and this would be a fair trial or on the other hand the others are concerned about. abilities of.

making games or deals or some sort of such kind of developments but there are some other issues he is really here is very important because apparently the judge in this trial is going to invite a number of prominent officials in the current egyptian government from the military and from the civilian side to this to fight in this court and apparently is a judge don't want to make it a kind of a circus where barak and the witnesses of water now occupying we're assuming fishel position exchanging. accusations and. abaddon not that nice return so it would be like a circus perhaps on their parents' leave that judge wants to avoid such a kind of with civility by making his decision by not putting the trial on there. as we started i did ask you about your your predictions about the forthcoming
3:15 pm
elections and what impact that could have. in the immediate future of the country but i just want to ask you now about the long term future of egypt will this revolution be seen as a positive chapter in the country's history just finally. again many things will be on what will happen in the coming few months there will be. influence of the islamist forces how big how much increase of the. influence of the islamists we have to wait and see but it will be bent on the kind of balance of power the will have and that if. this election. really. not a little perhaps this will be a big step forward. but. perhaps.

a completely different course which will be happy to have a future for anybody that. dr thanks so much for your time thank you for joining us live in current. royal dutch shell has admitted at least two hundred sixteen tons of oil of leaked into the sea just off the coast of scotland the spill which began five days ago was only acknowledged by the oil giant two days later and is still ongoing i'm now joined by adam ramsey he's event manager of the people and planet student organization for his view on what's behind the silence thanks very much indeed for being with us now for today's show refused to acknowledge there had been a spill and only after five days did it give any details why do you think this lack of communication. i think the people who used to dealing with wouldn't be surprised at all about the lack of communication it's worth remembering that it was only
3:17 pm
a few days ago that after years of lawyers and cover up their role in the. enormous spills across nigeria this company has never let the truth or in fact people's lives or the environment get in the way of getting the way of their profit margins one official estimate certainly we should be surprised by that yeah ok well the official estimates put the spill at two hundred sixteen tons two hundred sixteen tons of oil over an area of one hundred square miles and as you've just touched on the tradition of actually under playing the spill size is not giving the full facts tell us how do you perceive the situation just how serious is this oil spill. i think the first thing to say is that we don't know yet the only real information seems to be coming from shell themselves and as you say they don't have a great history in being honest about these things and certainly not. in the short term so so i think we certainly don't know for sure how bad it is but we do know that this is a serious spill we know for certain it is the worst spill in this country in more
3:18 pm
than a decade we know that it's going to have serious impact both on the environment across across that area of the north sea with breeding season for birds and we also know that the local fishery communities up the northeast has gotten to going to be really terrified by the chill impacts on their industry so we don't know for sure and i think also if you look at the broader context it's surely got to have an impact on legislators as shells seek to expand into the arctic as shell and other oil companies are looking all around the world they can't even keep their sources of oil they're all worlds in the u.k. safe and what does that say about that prospect in some of the most dangerous cities in the world what i find very interesting is that we're talking about it now saying that this actually occurred quite a few days ago i've been looking at a lot of the websites concerning british news not much on there up until now just how much coverage are you seeing there in the u.k. media. i've seen very little coverage of this at all and i'm saddened to say that
3:19 pm
i'm not at all surprised how little coverage there has been of this all as far as i said it's the biggest in ten years but it's important to remember that the u.k. government who have a lot of remiss over this that both you can go to the government have done everything they can to cover it up people might have seen footage of the scottish first minister alex salmond telling everyone that shell had this under control the u.k. government done very little to raise the profile of this and again that's not something we should be surprised by the u.k. government and the scottish government have both got long histories of being hand in hand and in the pockets of the oil industry in this country and so with the government to the only other potential monitors of this doing everything they can to keep it quiet in the shell particularly not talking about it it's not surprising that the media covering it again and again not surprising but very sad as you say a major incident really not reported in the u.k. press ok well it's very interesting here we have to say out of ramsey thanks very much indeed for joining us live there in the u.k. events manager of people and planet thanks very much indeed thank you.
