live from our studios in central moscow you're watching archie with me and you said now it's midnight here in the russian capital where russia has in fact refused to back for a call made by the u.s. and e.u. urging syria's leader to step down moscow believes president also should be given time to implement promised reforms and that the country should be left alone to sort out its own political future meanwhile twenty people have reportedly been killed by government troops in the latest fighting r.g.s. rif an ocean is in damascus with more. russia's position has always been clear steer it definitely needs reforms detainer is definitely needed required in this country but president assad needs time to do that through this. promoting democracy the real being agreeable support because they're rejecting a real look or against real population in the future all they have. to be

confirmed to be proof but on the other hand or could be who are too poor to be right know by the international community to continue to think pressure on the recruits for it is inferior but not pushing the situation in a corner just that the people of syria who have. all the right to determine the people who are the real interest or this. should not be done by any decisions or extra are there in washington or in brussels or in more or at the same time russia has all the time been retreating that eve present our side doesn't keep his promises in that case the special community should react russia's delegation is due in damascus very soon on saturday to try to find out exactly what is going on here on the ground and to see how assad is full feeling his promises we've
4:03 pm
witnessed the army thrown we've seen at least such a tank live in the city and inside the city we haven't seen any ministry laughed polese has returned to duty meanwhile we are receiving reports and the run media reports that based on the information received from protesters and local residents that the army is still. on the ground in latakia and even the reports that. the soldiers are firing from time. time. for demonstrators but i have to emphasize and this is very important these reports are very hard very far because of international journalists are not allowed to move freely here in the country as the syrian government because it's dangerous to mideast analyst based at king's college london oil embargo that the e.u.'s put in
4:04 pm
place could be a decisive move against syria the americans have been very clear they know their implements and ability to change syrian behavior is limited they've always said that have to reach out to countries who are closer to syria and russia is one such country and a very important country so i think the americans are now in the europeans especially really have to work hard to persuade the russians that they are right on syria and russia is currently wrong for that is the next important step and i think we should focus on one particular element which is really important could go either way syria's oil exports of the present about ninety percent or so syria's oil is exported to europe so the europeans are now come out you know united front against assad does that mean they will no longer accept syrian oil now syrian oil makes up some a quarter of syria's hard currency budget so could have a huge amount of an impact on the assad regime its ability to control things so ultimately i do think there is more than rhetoric to what the u.s. and the europeans are saying right now. live from moscow you're with are to still

have this hour a forerunner to change we will have a course soviet union took a major turn twenty years ago after an attempt to overthrow the government was staged on the streets of moscow. but first turbulence on world markets continues as u.s. stocks remain volatile newly released economic data has made grim reviews for american traders over the week domestic manufacturing fell to its lowest point since two thousand and nine while the housing market is in a slump and on employment says spiralling. reports from new york. the bad forecast the most recent one is coming from morgan stanley goldman sachs and j.p. morgan chase all three banks in the past day have released reports slashing their expectations for u.s. and global growth now morgan stanley believes that the global economy is hovering
4:06 pm
close to a recession j.p. morgan chase says the risk of recession has been elevated now this news of course will only cause investors to lose even more confidence and trust in the markets in the u.s. here and around the world we've been seeing that play out with all the volatility hitting the markets around the world and of course the debt crisis in europe is causing great concern for investors all the debt drama and debate that took place here in the u.s. caused a lot of concern and so all of this of course is not easing the mindset of of americans we have to remember unemployment here in the u.s. is is above nine percent nine point one percent one million people lost their homes in two thousand and ten and another million are expected to have their homes foreclosed on this year so if people are not confident in the market every day folks they're not going to spend their money all of this is tied together all of
4:07 pm
this is systemic and of course the united states being the world's largest economy whatever happens here in the u.s. does affect the world we saw that nearly three years ago in two thousand and eight with the financial crisis and collapse and we saw how it had a ripple domino effect around the world and right now many people are wondering why for three years later after all the promises all the stimulus plans all the tax cuts nothing has changed and it is long as there is a lack of confidence or very little trust it's hard to believe and predict that the u.s. economy and the rest of the world economy is going to bounce back any time soon. let's now talk more about the continuing wave of panic on the world's markets with dr jason johnson author and professor of political science at hiram college in ohio and he's joining us from atlanta dr johnson morgan stanley has put a bleak forecast on american and european growth saying they're both dangerously
4:08 pm
close to recession do you agree with that yes but one of the things that you have to remember is that much of these assessments they're based on what people believe as opposed to the realities on the ground well of the companies that have lost stock value over the last two days or two weeks these companies aren't magically not working anymore it's just that people's confidence is at an all time lows so if confidence stays low we will see another recession of confidence improves the economy but the u.s. and e.u. have severe debts how are they going to manage all that debt if their economies are growing and aren't growing because of lack of confidence so europe is the catch the only problem with that is when someone who actually wants to call it most of the u.s. debt right now is owned by china china is not about to reclaim the state of virginia they're not about to reclaim new york city by calling in their debts they primarily want to see america improve so it just leasing to be passed united states if the president can sort some control and instill some confidence in our future economy
4:09 pm
but debts are less of a problem than people's inertia and inability right now to get the economy moving joe biden is in china as we speak trying to calm investors do you think it's going to work is asia going to calm down and be less nervous about investing in the u.s. . i think big can be but it depends on what kind of deals he's going to offer will be back to the matter is right now you know more about you don't fourteen months away from the presidential election and this is a time when markets tend to get skittish anyway because they don't know who the new leadership is joe biden changing events china that barack obama is going to get reelected and therefore you can actually get next summer the promises the deals the biden will present yes i do think china will buy it and it will be comparable from moving forward all right dr jason johnson a live via broadband with us from atlanta thank you very much for your analysis it's twenty years ago that eight communist hardliner staged

a coup to overthrow got a bunch of then president of the soviet union but while it failed to topple the government it's widely seen as a pivotal factor in the u.s.s.r. as eventually collapse artie's time barton takes a look now at how it changed the course of soviet history. if you turned on your t.v. set in moscow on the morning of the nineteenth the war this ninety ninety one this is what you would have seen tchaikovsky's swan lake why many muscovites because on the streets this is what was really happening. there was confusion and panic even among the tent crews themselves. we were ordered to march towards moscow i thought i'd figured out when i get there as we would given any information as to what was happening. soviet leader mikhail gorbachev had been shut in his holiday home in the crimea a state committee on the state of emergency declared itself in charge it was made

up of high ranking communist party officials including the head of the k.g.b. group which obs vice president and the defense minister they were terrified that gorbachev's democratic reforms and the union treaty due to be signed on the twentieth of august would give so much power away from the center to the soviet republics it would destroy the soviet union. but it was an act of treason on the part of good which often yeltsin and this circle out right treason they were going to ruin our country. in a press conference later that day they said that gorbachev was ill and that they would take over in his absence but their show wasn't convincing on the nineteenth of august vice president kennedy and naive on the other members of the emergency committee sat in this very spot as he delivered his statement the assembled journalists noticed that his hands were shaking then one twenty four year old
4:12 pm
journalist blew his official words right out of the water. go to the bottle tell me do you realize that you've conducted a coup de tat they were very convincing and. they just got mad meanwhile on the streets the russian supremes soviet building the white house had become the center of resistance to the coup boris yeltsin the president of the russian part of the u.s.s.r. had convinced some of the tank crews to switch sides people flocked to join him and demand gorbachev's return but if yeltsin tells you that was the yeahs of in your command traitors and enemies whose always will you have be as night fell on the. twentieth of august the curfew ordered by the cool denies is raised fears of an assault on the white house when armored vehicles began moving through

a row tunnel in the night protesters disillusioned with the communist party rose up to defend their hopes of democracy. of kamala's son dimitriy was killed one would believe are now down to the right to wear his friend legitimate tried to drag him away while the machine rode over my sons had and killed lead to marriage wow. the coup had failed and what's more it destroyed trust in the communist party which was then banned russia in november one nine hundred ninety one by the end of the year the very system they sought to keep alive the soviet union had ceased to exist dumbarton. the classic horror movie jaws has become a reality in russia's far east which has been terrorized by a marine predator a cash reward has been offered by the authorities for the caster of the shark that savaged two people are just very brisk over tells the stories of the victims who are lucky to be alive. nothing like this has ever happened here before russia

sea of japan scientists believe the predator was a white shark a man eater and are trying to work out what it was doing here. this type of shock really comes to what is is a species that lives in tropical and subtropical waters of the ocean but with global warming they're now starting to move more and more to the north out of roughly three hundred sixty species of sharks just over thirty are known to be dangerous to humans the rest are either too small on live t d but most experts agree that any shark with sharp enough teeth and longer than one point two metres can cause sea. injuries especially if there's food or blood in the water and while scientists are looking for the reasons for these recent attacks the swimming season in the area is over at least for the time being. r t moscow
