12:01 pm
picking up pace the day before the event and. welcome this is r t it's eight pm saturday evening here in moscow my name's kevin owen and i've got the top story for you this hour hopes for a mideast peace agreement have been dealt a fresh blow with a mass announcing its pulling out from a defacto ceasefire with israel that statement comes in response to two days of israeli air strikes on gaza that saw more than a dozen killed paul asli is following the latest developments for us. amasses it will no longer add here to a truce now they said that there is no proof that these attacks which happened on thursday originated from gaza or in fact they deny this despite the fact that israel insists that it's god there is to blame now the palestinian president mahmoud abbas is calling for an emergency united nations security council meeting
12:02 pm
he's calling on the international community to denounce and to call on israel to stop these attacks the latest figures we have all some fifteen palestinians who have been killed in a round of israeli air strikes that have been ongoing since the late tuesday when most israelis are very afraid that they could be a full full scale war between israel and gaza and in the last conflict there were a number of casualties on both sides but having said that it is not more than four weeks since israeli protesters have taken to the streets asking and demanding from the government that it is great they socio economic problems organizers of these demonstrations say that this latest wave of violence is not unexpected they very much anticipated that the israeli government would do anything to detract attention from their complaints and their concerns and earlier we spoke to one of the organizers who said that they were simply fine with the victims of the violence and that they would still planning to go ahead tonight with a candle when i didn't stray shouldn't showing solidarity for those who had been
12:03 pm
killed it's taken us and tonight we're going to march together in silence in order to respect the victims of this conflict we're very disappointed by the government's reaction and that immediately said and tried to use our pain in order to stop this . and we disagree to such a close as this is going to continue and we're going to keep fighting for our rights and we're going to keep doing it together and we're not going to allow this conflict to stop us earlier we heard from the israeli foreign minister avigdor lieberman and to quote him he says that the palestinian authority was responsible for thursday's attacks and for this latest wave of violence and he said that this proves that any kind of palestinian talk about peace and wanting to. resume the peace process is far from reality in fact he said as far as ramallah is from new york now bill shock and other palestinian leaders have said that this is madness and that israel is trying to use this as an excuse to not get that you will vote past having said that later today the arab league will be meeting in cairo to look
12:04 pm
at the latest violence and what can and should be done for the latest word we have is that cairo has decided to record the head of its diplomatic mission here in israel it was earlier talk of the egyptian ambassador being record certainly this is the most serious diplomatic situation we've seen between egypt and israel for quite some time you need to remember of course that egypt and jordan are the only countries here who are neighbors of israel that the israeli government has diplomatic relations with if this relationship with cairo deteriorates you will have this one in a very serious situation that most of its neighbors now will typically be at war with the country in fact if you simple cause here in this one itself for israelis to deal with what has been termed a crisis a very very sensitive meet the end israeli defense official also saying that the egyptian peace treaty was to quote him fundamental to israel's existence so certainly a lot of alarm bells sounding here in tel aviv for fear that the current situation
12:05 pm
could merely deteriorate even further. for the slow mideast correspondent tell of these there let's get some more analysis of the situation the middle east and talk to journalist joining us live from tel aviv as well very good evening to joseph thanks for talking to our international palestinian officials so that israel doesn't stop the airstrikes on gaza could lead to another war how likely is that scenario do you think tonight. i would not know war is the correct word to use i think that it could lead to an israeli offensive in the gaza strip now it's very alarming that israel has yet to establish authority. yet excuse me yet to establish responsibility for these attacks in a lot they have initially said that the p.r.c. the popular resistance community committees were responsible for these attacks but they today the i.d.f. spokesman has distanced themselves from these statements and so we don't really know who's behind these attacks and yet israel is conducting air strikes against
12:06 pm
gaza as we speak yet there does seem to be submissive information here to just clarify what you saying that promise and claim that the palestinian government was actually at the same time the israeli defense minister the i.d.f. said that was never the case is this just misinformation though what's behind this confusion. while we don't know what's behind this confusion but we need to demand that the israeli government prove factually that that the p.r.c. or elements inside the gaza strip are in fact responsible for these horrific terror attacks on israeli citizens and if they're unable to prove that there are serious questions that need to be raised about why israel is conducting air strikes in the gaza strip as we speak israel's of course as well expressed regret for the killing of those five egyptian border guards is that an indication maybe of how much it needs egypt support its continued support right now with talk of course the tyro
12:07 pm
could be that again may negotiate sort of a cease fire between hamas and israel. while i think that the egyptians are coming to prominence after their revolution in a new and fundamentally different way and then they have been the fact that they were able to push forward with a reconciliation agreement between hamas and fatah without the support of the u.s. or in fact without the u.s. involvement at all is significant and israel must be raising serious questions internally about what this new egypt is going to mean for the egyptian israeli peace. you ation as well as for the palestinian statehood push in september this year i was taught a course as well as ready activists are getting ready to take to the streets in a peaceful protest tonight against the way that they see their government dealing with domestic problems how much are they likely to criticize prime minister netanyahu for his handling of this recent flare up as well as those internal of the
12:08 pm
domestic issues that the right on the streets about. i think that there will be very significant calls against netanyahu and i think that the protesters will rally behind these renewed airstrikes in gaza as proof that the government is unwilling or unable to deal with their demands now it should be noted that during these protests that have been shaking israel for the last month israel has conducted air straight in gaza the air strikes that are going on now are indeed dramatic and aggressive but this is nothing new and so i think it's a bit audacious for the ten protesters to argue that the air strikes happening in gaza right now are in connection to their social justice movement or anything like that and how does this all fit in with that backed up of course of the votes on palestinian state place in the u.n. next month that's going to affect that. well we don't know exactly how it's going
12:09 pm
to affect it yet the palestinians in the west bank or are planning major demonstrations for this upcoming friday and so i think that the next week is going to be an incredibly important dramatic and almost volatile week in this region especially in terms of the palestinian statehood push if the demonstrations in the west bank get out of hand or get very violent i think that will see a reserve call up in israel which will directly affect the constituents of the temperate people's mind that most of the people protesting for social justice in the streets of tel aviv and jerusalem are of age to go into the reserves and so if there is a call up for you there are. ground invasion into gaza or any sort of outbreak of violence in the west bank it will be the ten protesters and they were serious questions about whether or not they're going to fight for a government that has so far ignored their demand for for economic reallocation into literally very close closely following events and of course our cameras will
12:10 pm
be on the streets later as well to see how those protests pan out but for now journalist joseph diana thanks for giving us your thoughts from tel aviv tonight. and staying in the middle east a russian delegations arrived in syria to assess the situation on the ground with reports of dozens of new deaths during the latest spate of anti-government protests that's despite president assad's claims that operations against civilians have ended the international pressure on the syrian leader meantime is mounting despite moscow's refusing to support the u.s. initiative demanding that the u.s. impose a fresh set of sanctions economic sanctions with the e.u. preparing more penalties targeting the country. analysts change then slow told of such measures could prove decisive. the americans have been very clear they know their influence and ability to change their behavior is limited they've always said it had to reach out to countries closer to syria and russia is one such country and a very important country so i think the americans will now in europe in specially
12:11 pm
really have to work hard to persuade the russians they are right on syria and russia is currently wrong for that is the next important step and i think we should focus on one particular element which is really important could go either way serious oil exports of the present about ninety percent or so serious oil is exported to europe so the europeans are now come out you know united front against assad does that mean they will no longer accept syrian oil now syrian oil makes up some quarter of syria's hard currency budget so it could have a huge amount of an impact on the assad regime its ability to control things so ultimately i do think there is more than rhetoric to what the u.s. and europeans are saying right now. this is r.t. international still to come this may marking and making history it's twenty years since an attempt to prove mikhail gorbachev of the soviet union's government was through supported we got this second of our special reports coming up just ahead for you. will stock markets a plumber to de mint signs of a possible u.s.
12:12 pm
recession and renewed worries over the health of europe's banks investor confidence has been dealt a severe blow and sparked a massive sell off at the end of the week as that is more important explains no global economic fears continue to build. investors around the world may have very little to celebrate this weekend as u.s. stocks and major european share markets closed down on friday of course this capping the turmoil and volatility that continues to be seen in the european economy in the u.s. economy at least being seen for the past few weeks this does not help ease the lack of confidence interest and lack of trust that is taking place among analysts and investors keeping their eye on the global economy and j.p. morgan chase morgan stanley goldman sachs are among the three banks that came out with reports were saying their predictions for u.s.
12:13 pm
and global economic growth they cut those predictions morgan stanley even saying that the global economy is hovering close to a recession and also not helping the circumstances recent reports indicating that the u.s. economy is not doing as well as anticipated manufacturing is that its lowest point since two thousand and nine the housing market is still experiencing a huge slump unemployment is spiraling here in the u.s. more than fourteen million americans are unemployed investors are also very concerned about how the european leaders are handling the debt crisis in europe the fact of what it is doing to the euro zone many believe that did the right decisions are not being made and not being made quick enough clearly this is an indication that three years after the financial collapse that started here in new york wall street it infected the rest of the world clearly that crisis continues to be having
12:14 pm
a huge impact on the lives of people all around the world those people that were promised that three years later the economy would be doing much better and now all we see. he is that there are a lot of struggles taking place and it's not quite clear if any leader of any country knows how to handle this problem to stop all the volatility and turmoil and to bring confidence to investors whoa fears over repeat of the financial crisis of two thousand and eight are spreading global panic jason johnson is a professor of political science he told us he thinks we might see a recession in the u.s. if investors aren't reassured. but companies that have lost stock value over the last two days or two weeks these companies aren't magically not working anymore it's just that people's confidence is at an all time lows so if confidence stays low we will see another recession of confidence improves the economy will the only
12:15 pm
problem with that is when someone actually wants to call it or most of the u.s. debt right now is owned by china china is not about to reclaim the state of virginia they're not about to reclaim new york city by calling in their debts they primarily want to see america so it legislation can be passed united states if the president can sort some control and there's still some confidence in our future economy debts are less of a problem than people's inertia and inability right now to get the economy moving right now it looks like the chances of barack obama getting real like that are actually still better than fifty percent which would mean that markets that are concerned with investing right now now they're going to feel a bit more confident if it looks like obama's chances of being reelected are slim then everyone's going to get more nervous risk if you have no idea what a new administration might act policy wise. this is a coming up the sky's the limit. it's the two thousand and eleven a max air show just outside of moscow here with me rule research on t.v.
12:16 pm

often poorly maintained. over ten thousand people gathered in india's capital in support of a problem of the activist who is on his fifth day of a hunger strike and says he is physically weak but will not renounce his fight demanding tougher anti corruption laws the campaigner started his fast in jail after being arrested for planning a protest led police approval as arias says indians are fed up with government bribery and is threatening to starve himself to death unless parliament passes his legislation. twenty years to the day history was in the making on the streets here in moscow the city was under military curfew on the second day in attempt to overthrow mikhail gorbachev then president of the soviet union. looks back at the attempted coup that proved pivotal in the collapse of the u.s.s.r. . twenty years ago today moscow was in turmoil tanks on the streets barricades manned outside the russian parliament the white house
12:20 pm
panic and anger were in the air and the soviet army came face to face with its own people. the first couple of days were pretty scary that's when we had to go to keep points in the city and protect them there were crowds of people gathering and violence was on the verge of breaking out the coup plotters had isolated soviet leader mikhail gorbachev and seize control of media outlets but one reporter defied the k.g.b. officers in his news room. we've switched on our t.v. camera with votes much hope of being able to go on air tonight you can see barricades being erected. survey's report was shown and spread word of the democratic resistance developing around the reformist russian president boris yeltsin as the standoff continues through the nineteenth and twentieth of august fears grew of an assault on the white house you know all of the tanks and soldiers in the streets all of it's made you feel uneasy thinking what's going to happen in
12:21 pm
an hour what's going to happen and might. those armored vehicles tried to ram their way through barricades and move into a road tunnel near the white house some of the protesters tried to stop them lubov qamar thought her son dimitri was safe with a friend in fact he was manning the barricades. judging by documents that i've been able to see another dmitri had climbed on my vehicle to cover its vision slits have to be in that he jumped into the vehicles very a hatch where he was shot. dimitri was only wounded but the vehicle then ran over his head killing him as two other protesters were shot in the mayhem. that guy was killed in front of thousands of people who went berserk we pumped out later that picture from a nearby car they're pouring picture into bottles set in them a fire throwing them at the tanks the conspirators already wavering lost their
12:22 pm
nerve. the three men memorialized here have become martyrs for the democratic cause in fact the expected assault on the white house never materialized but even before the violence which happened just mere few soldiers were being orders. my colleagues and i already saw that the coup was failing so i asked for i got the orders to attack the white house and apprehend yeltsin we unanimously decided we wouldn't do it but. as the plotters admitted the bloodshed destroyed their cause the august coup had come close to succeeding but in the end it went the way of yeltsin and democracy tom barton. it's less than twenty four hours now before this year's international air show closes in the moscow region but nonetheless the action is showing no sign of waning still russia's newest fighter jet the still classified t fifty prototypes been the main headliner
