with its maybe a little more there has been a lot of talk especially in the last half year about you values and standards we never really know what this exactly means i mean. and i don't think the e.u. has an almighty right to determine where lie be boundaries of such principles we never really heard critically or definition of what exactly these values are what exactly are the fundamentals of these principles and what are the details where exactly are the boundaries of these so it is always a contentious issue i mean every country every nation state which the e.u. consists of has its own media law has its own institutions that safeguard the freedom of speech or the freedom of press so even in the e.u. the opinions about the area media law have been very diverse it has received

criticisms and it has also been defended by some politicians in the you were of course to their agreement the liberal fraction in the european parliament has been very hysterical about it. i can understand some of their criticisms but on the other hand in this country we have a long history of where people from outside try to tell us what to do for a long time it was from moscow for fifty years now we have people coming around from brussels from washington rating hungary and freedom of press freedom of speech and. trying to tell us what kind of rules are the best for hungary and we had in this country in the past twenty years during the history of hearing democracy so to speak previous media law which was very far from perfect. and there are a lot of instances where the freedom of speech has been very seriously attacked on the the under the umbrella of this media law that we never heard

anybody say anything in europe or outside of europe or criticizing this media though so i think that we have to be very careful when we when we judge this of course we have our valid criticisms against it still trying to say about the ways in which the law itself was introduced some people saying that it was done with a lot of secrecy and it seems to be a little bit unfair to tell us about that i think it is very unfortunate when a two thirds majority what the government has in hungary at the moment is used to push through a law very quickly and without very careful consideration first of all i know that there is a huge enticement to do things very quickly and pushing through law. rather they even have a majority to change the constitution. but i think that the danger is that the law is going to be imperfect this law is imperfect from the point of view that for

instance the delegates to this media story to your purely it's very one sided it's not a balance for it's the only for us members are being delegated into this or that or at least. the leader of this if i were to be is appointed for nine years which is a long it's in the public office that's a long long time you know i mean during nine years more than two elections go past you know and i think it's it's very unfortunate when some people are kind of. stuck to their position you know for nine years delegates are appointed by the prime minister which is very unusual and the minimum would be that the parliament appoints them and there is some kind of proportionality within this authority and some delegates. of the opposition can also be there because we think that is what would bring. the kind of balanced overview supervision to this authority

how much of a threat are these in those press freedoms i don't think it is going to impact the march on press freedom press freedom in this country has been it has a long history to say the least in this country we used to have for fifty years. media that was completely centralized run by the party the communist party of hungary on from one nine hundred eighty nine on till the change following this we have a very very liberal media law previous the pretty set of this media that was extremely liberal. in hungary and journalism newspapers televisions radios the majority of people who used to work in the previous era who used to work in a dictatorship i mean i don't know if somebody coming from the from the west can. comprehend the situation here i mean if just to draw a parallel this is as if in

a post second world war germany you would have journalists that have written articles in the photo showed their work there before the end of the second world war you see it's a very obscure situation and. so. kind of when we judge this media law we have to be fair and we have to see where it is coming from and the problem is that we have a lot of in the past twenty years we had a lot of accumulated grief. emanating from the media or in this country we had a very very one sided very one sided liberal and left wing type of journalism which needs to be balanced out i mean there is no question about it but i think now the pendulum has somehow struck completely the other direction you see. so i understand the reaction what i think it has gone too far on the other end see so there has to be some kind of balance and some kind of. thought to bring

the state of the media into some some kind of balance other countries just my view just one one parallel in the czech republic anybody who has been a journalist in the pre nine hundred eighty nine era has been banned from going near any media television radio or newspaper and if you look at the czech media it is a lot more balanced and they don't have this type of discussions that we have today where we have even in today's. newspapers you have people. you know i could find you in the archives article b. have written for the greater greater glory of. whoever were running the communist state and now all of a sudden they are talking about press freedom and about criticizing this government for the media law that they have made you know under

a democratic regime and democratically elected government so there is a bit of i think. peculiar taste to this whole debate that we're having in hungary so you would describe this is a government taking along the media in a lot of layoffs are the government just trying. cuts for people in positions of power is that treat it as a matter of fact that people have been laid off especially in the state run television. i'm not a media expert but. i think there are very few people in this country including the socialists who are the loudest about this about this situation that very few people in this country including them would say. the area national media is are not oversized in terms of employment i mean. some kind of rationalization. was long overdue everybody has been always talking about it but socialists have been talking about it when they were in government this government has not only

talking or been talking about it but they have laid the people off because they saw that it is unsustainable. so i think. this debate has become. very politicized it's more about politics than about professional commerce i mean if something is unsustainable you have to cut costs and if if something is over bureaucratized. you know you're going to have people laid off so. based on this new media law i think the whole media needs a bit of rethinking including the national media and that is going to be. that is going to hurt some people. but the unfortunate consequence of such a situation why did he speak out think this particular when as he said it's a signal that other very important issues that have been happening here in the country why do you think that each
