our doctors. should close up on our jeanne. just joins a very warm welcome this is the weekend life here nancy top stories now as libya's rebels claim heavy gunfire and explosions in tripoli signal. is approaching some reports from there suggest it's just part of nature his plan to play havoc in the city. a surge of violence in the middle east for fears of a deadly exchange of fire between israel and gaza might lead to the jewish state launching a new ground offensive. britain fights back against recent riots with harsh sentences handed to even those who just thought about taking part but many saying

the government's disproportionate response simply fuel public discontent. but i'll be back with another summer front about fifteen minutes from now in the meantime hungary's new media the war has created quite a stir in the e.u. with the setting up of a new government controlled authority and i sat down with the country's foreign affairs committee vice chairman to talk about the controversial initiative and the impact it might have on the freedom of press that's our interview next. it's not been long since hungary handed. the presidency to poland and president missed all that has been pushing ahead with his controversial new media law we're joined now by the vice chairman for the foreign affairs committee at the parliament here in hungary thank you very much for joining us now press freedom is a fundamental principle. do you think that hungary is down even further away from.
12:32 am
with its maybe a little more there has been a lot of talk especially in the last half year about you values and standards we never really know what this exactly means i mean. and i don't think the e.u. has an almighty right to determine where lie be boundaries of such principles we never really heard critically or definition of what exactly these values are what exactly are the fundamentals of these principles and what are the details where exactly are the boundaries of these so it is always a contentious issue i mean every country every nation state which the e.u. consists of has its own media law has its own institutions that safeguard the freedom of speech or the freedom of press so even in the e.u. the opinions about the area media law have been very diverse it has received
12:33 am
criticisms and it has also been defended by some politicians in the you were of course to their agreement the liberal fraction in the european parliament has been very hysterical about it. i can understand some of their criticisms but on the other hand in this country we have a long history of where people from outside try to tell us what to do for a long time it was from moscow for fifty years now we have people coming around from brussels from washington rating hungary and freedom of press freedom of speech and. trying to tell us what kind of rules are the best for hungary and we had in this country in the past twenty years during the history of hearing democracy so to speak previous media law which was very far from perfect. and there are a lot of instances where the freedom of speech has been very seriously attacked on the the under the umbrella of this media law that we never heard
12:34 am
anybody say anything in europe or outside of europe or criticizing this media though so i think that we have to be very careful when we when we judge this of course we have our valid criticisms against it still trying to say about the ways in which the law itself was introduced some people saying that it was done with a lot of secrecy and it seems to be a little bit unfair to tell us about that i think it is very unfortunate when a two thirds majority what the government has in hungary at the moment is used to push through a law very quickly and without very careful consideration first of all i know that there is a huge enticement to do things very quickly and pushing through law. rather they even have a majority to change the constitution. but i think that the danger is that the law is going to be imperfect this law is imperfect from the point of view that for
12:35 am
instance the delegates to this media story to your purely it's very one sided it's not a balance for it's the only for us members are being delegated into this or that or at least. the leader of this if i were to be is appointed for nine years which is a long it's in the public office that's a long long time you know i mean during nine years more than two elections go past you know and i think it's it's very unfortunate when some people are kind of. stuck to their position you know for nine years delegates are appointed by the prime minister which is very unusual and the minimum would be that the parliament appoints them and there is some kind of proportionality within this authority and some delegates. of the opposition can also be there because we think that is what would bring. the kind of balanced overview supervision to this authority
12:36 am
how much of a threat are these in those press freedoms i don't think it is going to impact the march on press freedom press freedom in this country has been it has a long history to say the least in this country we used to have for fifty years. media that was completely centralized run by the party the communist party of hungary on from one nine hundred eighty nine on till the change following this we have a very very liberal media law previous the pretty set of this media that was extremely liberal. in hungary and journalism newspapers televisions radios the majority of people who used to work in the previous era who used to work in a dictatorship i mean i don't know if somebody coming from the from the west can. comprehend the situation here i mean if just to draw a parallel this is as if in
12:37 am
a post second world war germany you would have journalists that have written articles in the photo showed their work there before the end of the second world war you see it's a very obscure situation and. so. kind of when we judge this media law we have to be fair and we have to see where it is coming from and the problem is that we have a lot of in the past twenty years we had a lot of accumulated grief. emanating from the media or in this country we had a very very one sided very one sided liberal and left wing type of journalism which needs to be balanced out i mean there is no question about it but i think now the pendulum has somehow struck completely the other direction you see. so i understand the reaction what i think it has gone too far on the other end see so there has to be some kind of balance and some kind of. thought to bring
12:38 am
the state of the media into some some kind of balance other countries just my view just one one parallel in the czech republic anybody who has been a journalist in the pre nine hundred eighty nine era has been banned from going near any media television radio or newspaper and if you look at the czech media it is a lot more balanced and they don't have this type of discussions that we have today where we have even in today's. newspapers you have people. you know i could find you in the archives article b. have written for the greater greater glory of. whoever were running the communist state and now all of a sudden they are talking about press freedom and about criticizing this government for the media law that they have made you know under
12:39 am
a democratic regime and democratically elected government so there is a bit of i think. peculiar taste to this whole debate that we're having in hungary so you would describe this is a government taking along the media in a lot of layoffs are the government just trying. cuts for people in positions of power is that treat it as a matter of fact that people have been laid off especially in the state run television. i'm not a media expert but. i think there are very few people in this country including the socialists who are the loudest about this about this situation that very few people in this country including them would say. the area national media is are not oversized in terms of employment i mean. some kind of rationalization. was long overdue everybody has been always talking about it but socialists have been talking about it when they were in government this government has not only
12:40 am
talking or been talking about it but they have laid the people off because they saw that it is unsustainable. so i think. this debate has become. very politicized it's more about politics than about professional commerce i mean if something is unsustainable you have to cut costs and if if something is over bureaucratized. you know you're going to have people laid off so. based on this new media law i think the whole media needs a bit of rethinking including the national media and that is going to be. that is going to hurt some people. but the unfortunate consequence of such a situation why did he speak out think this particular when as he said it's a signal that other very important issues that have been happening here in the country why do you think that each

a space station he can say very clear about to say the voice of the e.u. i mean the e.u. doesn't have a single voice on anything you say they pretend that they have a common foreign policy but they don't need you know everybody's doing their own stuff i'm saying. the voice of the e.u. i think is an overexaggeration of for putting too much emphasis on. on the e.u. there are parties and there are national. delegates to this parliament and of course everybody has their own ideology and their own party affiliation and their own national background you see so. i think when we say that the e.u. has said a lot of criticism to this law we also have to say there's a lot of people within the e.u. within the european parliament who. defended this or. especially from the european peoples party which is the biggest faction within the european parliament thanks

now the days early thanks just saw a car draw with former russian champions would be one wanted home despite losing for most of the match hosts broke with that law through on basically at the phone thirty seven minutes as. five homes have been inside the area but the two times arson champions pulled it back with five minutes left that thought there could be a legatee lasik allies after a corner kick or if i don't score of one all. just one more is all from south of a terry gross and they have been trailing one male throughout the game and the chechen capital before us selves that is on course each and that's an own goal so another one one jordan cross needs. to know moscow on an action until sunday when they face free standing on gene that gave our team's constantin pop up with a chance to catch up with arjun time to family on the numbers it's just not a six year anniversary here in russia. dilemma look like a team that's making

a serious title challenge in the russian premier league this season the moscow side light third away from results like their last game are anything to go by and then they could be one course to scoop their first ever championship a good attack is the best defense and in amr fooling this rule pretty successfully however you can't win anything by only having forwards in the squad after the way it's six thirteen coach in thirteen years. at the end of april and since then you know we have suffered just two defeats in fifteen midges and according to defend the lander fernandez business only one game so far this campaign this side has gained the confidence and composure needed for victory knowing this if i think as we've begun scoring goals that's what we like the full now we manage the game better now we play with more control not so desperately like we did before when we couldn't score a goal and got desperate on the telly to attack pool that didn't help so i think we changed a lot of things not too many of course but the results speak for themselves and

still the defense of the big adds to their taking units confidence this has been a rock in front of dino is now it seems he made a move from urgent kenyan side river plate in two thousand and six and their. soon became one of the fans' favorites being handed the player of the award by the supporters and after six years here his become a true to me i'm a veteran. over those six years i've never had a problem on there with foreigners or with the russians i think the best thing that football gives us is the ability to make friends here the point it's ok to be in fact we're not here during most of the winter and when i come back i enjoy playing snowballs with my daughter and things like that after changing continents and moving to russia on the defensive when in through and this for the display of his downs by scoring goals no wonder his opponents try to avoid corners and free kicks is a rival in their position walks always heralds danger as he can get a head start to any forward in aerial medals in short moves the twenty eight year
