old girl just an omission streets now in the palm of your. question on the. past six in the evening here in moscow you are without seen bad. rebels say they're advancing towards tripoli but the libyan leadership dismisses the scale of their threats and also all parties to negotiate. violence snowballs in the middle east for the fourth day amid fears exchanges of fire between hamas and israel mainly surged round offensive in gaza meanwhile the arab league blames israel for fueling attention and. a crackdown against english rises gave my men some with harsh sentences handed to those who played only minor parts in the chaos of human rights

groups say judges and politicians have gone too far. and the e.u. leaders promise of a single economic government fails to reassure anxious investors and turbulent markets as fresh trouble over greece once again threats of stability and. hungary's new media law has created quite a stir in the e.u. with the setting up of a new government controlled authority. spoke with the country's foreign affairs committee vice chairman to talk about the controversial initiative and the impact it might have on the freedom of the press. it's not being long since hungry handed it's vacating the presidency. and president mr or ben has been pushing ahead with his controversial new media law we're joined now by the vice chairman of the foreign affairs committee at the parliament helen hungry thank you very much for joining us now press freedom is
10:32 am
a fundamental principle of the do you think the hungry some even further away from the valleys and stand with. well there has been a lot of talk especially in the last half year about e.u. values and standards we never really know what this exactly means i mean. and i don't know i think the b.u. has an almighty right to determine where ly be boundaries of such principles we never really heard a critic clear definition of what exactly it is values are what exactly are the fundamentals of these principles and what are the details that the other boundaries of peace so it is always a contentious issue i mean every country every nation state which the e.u. consists of has its own india law has its own institutions that safeguard the freedom of speech or different demand for press so even in the e.u.
10:33 am
the opinions about the hungarian media law have been very diverse it has received criticisms and it has also been defended by some politicians in the e.u. of course the green and the liberal fraction the european parliament has been very hysterical about it. i can understand some of their criticisms but on the other hand in this country we have a long history of where people from outside tried to tell us what to do for a long time it was for moscow for fifty years now we have people coming around from brussels from washington rating hungary freedom of press freedom of speech rights and. trying to tell us what kind of rules are the best for hungary and we have in this country in the past twenty years during the history of hungary in democracy so to speak previous media law which was very far from perfect and there are a lot of instances where freedom of speech has been very seriously
10:34 am
attacked on the the on the umbrella of this media law that we never heard anybody say anything in europe or outside of europe or criticizing this media law so i think that we have to be very careful when we when we judge this of course we have our valid criticisms against this whole controversy about the ways in which the law itself was introduced some people saying that it was done with a lot of secrecy and it seems to be a little bit on the how can you tell us about that i think it is very unfortunate when the two thirds majority what the government has in hungary at the moment is used to push through a law very quickly and without very careful consideration first of all i know that there is a huge enticement to do things very quickly and pushing through laws. that would be even have a majority to change the constitution. but i think that the danger is that the
10:35 am
law is going to be imperfect this law is imperfect from the point of view that for instance the delegates to this media forty are purely it's very one sided it's not a balance. only if you just members are being delegated into this authority. the leader of this authority is appointed for nine years which is a long it's a public office that's a long long time you know i mean during nine years more than two elections go past you know and i think it's it's very unfortunate when some people are kind of. stuck to their position you know for nine years the delegates are appointed by the prime minister which is very unusual. but the minimum would be that the parliament appoints the i meant there is some kind of proportionality within this authority and some delegates of all of the opposition can also be there because we
10:36 am
think that is what would bring. the kind of balanced over a few war supervision of this authority how much of a threat in those press freedoms i don't think it is going to impact that much on press freedom press freedom in this country has been it has a long history to say the least in this country used to have for fifty years. media that was completely centralized run by the party the communist party of hungary following this we had a very very liberal media law previous to criticise sort of this media that was extremely liberal we had in hungary in journalism newspapers televisions radios the majority of people who used to work in the previous era we used to work in a dictatorship i don't know if somebody coming from the west and.
10:37 am
comprehend the situation here just to draw a parallel this is as if it. was second world war germany you would have journalists that have written articles in the first issue of bell back then before the end of the second world war you see it's a very obscure situation and the problem is that we have a lot of in the past twenty years we had a lot of accumulated grief. emanating from the media though in this country we have a very very one sided very one sided liberal and left wing type of journalism which needs to be balanced and there's no question about it but i think that now the pendulum. somehow struck me to the other direction. so i understand the reaction but i think it has gone too far on the other end so needless describes this government taking along the media in a lot of layoffs are the government just trying to cut from nato and put their own
10:38 am
people into positions of power is that tree i'm not a media expert but. i think there are very few people in this country including the socialists who are the loudest about this about this situation where very few people in this country including them. see. very a national media as i'm not oversized in terms of employment i mean. some kind of rationalization. was long overdue everybody has been always talking about it but so should this have been talking about it when they were in government. this government has not only talking here and talking about it but they have made people off because they saw that it is unsustainable. so i think. this debate has become very politicized it's more about politics than about professional comments see i mean something is also stable where you have to cut costs and if if something
10:39 am
is over bureaucratized. you know you're going to have people laid off so this based on this new media law i think the whole media needs a bit of rethinking including the national media and that is going to be. that is going to hurt some people and that's the unfortunate consequence of such a situation why did the least speak out say they clear on this particular a shame when as he said it's a signal that other very important issues that have been happening here in the country why do you think that the case based a sheet speak out save a clear about it was an ideological and political. attack now we have a right from government. right wing government is always attacked by the left wing liberals in the european parliament this is our past experience. how this works we can only guess we have a socialist party in this country which has extremely good connections in the european parliament. and in the european media this government the all time
10:40 am
government and i'm seeing this being in opposition so i think this somehow add some value to what i say. in the. in between ninety eight and two thousand and two this government already had one and it was very interesting to see. the volume. and the extensive mess of this criticism that this government has received from outside of hungary as you can exactly exactly identify who those people are where the sick criticism comes from and what is the direction of the criticism it is with has something to do with with the fear of for a dictatorship being introduced to hungary you know things are and i mean nothing like that happened exactly and when the socialist government ran this country for eight years nobody said a single word in the european parliament and in the e.u.
10:41 am
although we know and it was admitted that the hungary and government the socialist government forces fired the economic statistics that were submitted to the european parliament which is criminal. you had the two thousand and six issues when the people were shot on the streets went on the streets to demonstrate against a prime minister who made the speech this speech was leaked where he admitted to have lied day and night about the economic and other situation in the country and he won the elections through lies and this this speech was leaked out and there was huge uproar pro in this country. nobody else seems to care in the whole world in the democratic world that usually are worried about democratic values or the values of the european union whatever they might be. how they are being respected in this country so i think that there is an extremely strong double standard against this
