a fundamental principle of the i do think the hungry some even further away from the values the stand with. well there has been a lot of talk especially in the last half year about you are using standards we never really know what this exactly means i mean. and i don't know i think maybe you have an almighty right to determine where ly be boundaries of such principles we never really heard or critically a definition of what exactly these values are what exactly are the fundamentals of these principles and what are the details where exactly are the boundaries of these so it is always a contentious issue i mean every country every nation state which the e.u. consists of has its own media law has its own institutions that safeguard the freedom of speech or the freedom of press so even in the e.u. the opinions of the hungarian media law have been very diverse it has received

criticisms and it has also been defended by some politicians in the e.u. of course the green and the liberal fracture in the european parliament has been very hysterical about it. i can understand some of their criticisms but on the other hand in this country we have a long history of where people from outside try to tell us what to do for a long time it was for moscow for fifty years now we have people coming around from brussels from washington rating freedom of press freedom of speech and. trying to tell us what kind of rules are best for hungary hands we had in this country in the past twenty years during the history of gary in democracy so to speak previous media law which was very far from perfect. and there were a lot of instances where freedom of speech has been very seriously

attacked on the the on the the umbrella of this media little i've never heard anybody say anything in europe or outside of europe criticizing this media law so i think that's we have to be very careful when we when we judge this of course we have our valid criticisms against this law and this includes obviously about the ways in which the law itself is introducing some people saying that it was done with a lot of secrecy it seems a little bit underhand what can you tell us about that i think it is very unfortunate when the two thirds majority where the government hasn't hunger at the moment is used to push through a law very quickly and without very careful consideration first of all i know that there is a huge enticement to do things very quickly and pushing through law was. valid they even have a majority to change the constitution. but i think that the danger is that the

law is going to be imperfect this law is imperfect from the point of view that for instance the delegates to this media forward to me are purely it's very one sided it's not a balance for it to be only for the spammers are being delegated into this authority . the leader of this it forward is appointed for nine years which is a long it's in the public office that's a long long time you know i mean during nine years more than two elections go past you know and i think it's it's very unfortunate when some people are kind of. stuck to their position you know for nine years but then they get sort of pointed by the prime minister which is very unusual and the minimum would be that the parliament appoints them and there is some kind of proportionality within this authority and some delegates of all of the opposition can also be there because we

think that is what would bring. the kind of balanced or if you wore supervision to this authority how much of a threat in those press freedoms i don't think it is going to impact that much on press freedom press freedom in this country has been it has a long history to say the least in this country we used to have for fifty years. media that was completely centralised and run by the party the communist party of hungary following this we had a very very liberal media law the previous the pretty censor of this media was extremely liberal we had in one year in journalism newspapers televisions radios the majority of people who used to work in the previous era we used to work in a dictatorship i don't know with somebody coming from the west and. comprehend this situation just to draw
