the laws created quite a stir in the e.u. with the setting up of a new government controlled authority r.t. sarah ferguson spoke with the country's foreign affairs committee vice chairman to talk about this controversial initiative and the impact it might have on the freedom of the press there. it's not been long since hungry handed. the presidency to poland and president mr all down has been pushing ahead with his controversial new media law we're joined now by the vice chairman for the foreign affairs committee at the parliament here in hungary thank you very much for joining us now press freedom is a fundamental principle of the do you think the hungry some even further away from the. stand with this maybe a little more there has been a lot of talk especially in the last half year about you values and standards we never really know what this exactly means i mean. and i don't think they'll be you
2:32 pm
. know mighty right to determine where lie be boundaries of such principles we never really heard the clear definition of what exactly these values are what exactly are the fundamentals of these principles and what are the details where exactly are the boundaries of peace so it is always a contentious issue i mean every country every nation state which the e.u. consists of has its own media law it has its own institutions that safeguard the freedom of speech or the freedom of press so even in the e.u. the opinions about the hungarian media law have been very diverse it has received criticisms and it has also been defended by some politicians in the e.u. of course the green and the liberal fracture in the european parliament has been very hysteric about it. i can understand some of their criticisms but on the other
2:33 pm
hand in this country we have a long history of where people from outside try to tell us what to do for a long time it was for moscow for fifty years now we have people coming around from brussels from washington rating hungary and freedom of press freedom of speech and . trying to tell us what kind of rules are the best for hungary and we had in this country in the past twenty years during the history of hungary and democracy so to speak previous media law which was very far from perfect. and there were a lot of instances where the freedom of speech has been very seriously attacked on the the on the the embroil of this media law that we never heard anybody say anything in europe or outside of europe criticizing this media law so i think that we have to be very careful when we when we judge this of course we have
2:34 pm
our valid criticisms against this law of the sea about the ways in which the law itself was introduced we had some people saying that it was done with a lot of secrecy and it seemed to be a little bit underhand what can you tell us about that i think it is very unfortunate when a two thirds majority what the government has in hungary at the moment is used to push through a law very quickly and without very careful consideration first of all i know that there is a huge enticement to do things very quickly and pushing through laws. now that they even have a majority to change the constitution. but i think that the danger is that the law is going to be imperfect this law is imperfect from the point of view that for instance the delegates to this media thora t. are purely it's very one sided it's not a balance for it to be only for us members are being delegated into this authority
2:35 pm
. the leader of this authority is appointed for nine years which is a long it's in the public office that's a long long time you know i mean during nine years more than two elections go past you know and i think it's it's very unfortunate when some people are kind of. stuck to their position you know for nine years the delegates are appointed by the prime minister which is very unusual. the minimum would be that the parliament appoints them and there is some kind of proportionality within this authority and some delegates. of the opposition can also be there because we think that is that would bring. the kind of balanced view supervision to this authority how much of a threat are these in those press feet and i don't think it is going to impact much on press freedom press freedom in this country has been it has
2:36 pm
a long history to say the least in this country we used to have for fifty years. media that was completely centralized and run by the party the communist party of hungary following this we had a very very liberal media law the previous the pretty set of this media that was extremely liberal we had in hungary in journalism newspapers televisions radios the majority of people who used to work in the previous era who used to work in a dictatorship i don't know if somebody coming from the west and. comprehend this situation here i believe just to draw a parallel this is as if in the. second world war germany you would have journalists that have written articles in the focus should be there before the end of the second world war you see it's a very obscure situation and the problem is that we have
2:37 pm
a lot of in the past twenty years we have a lot of accumulated grief. emanating from the media or in this country we have a very very one sided very one sided liberal and left wing type of journalism which is to be balanced and there is no question about it but i think that now depending. somehow struck really the other direction you see. so i understand the reaction but i think it has gone too far on the other end some people describe this is the government taking a loan to the media there's been a lot of layoffs are the government just trying to cut their own people and power is that tree i'm not a media expert but. i think there are very few people in this country including the socialists who are the loudest about this about this situation there are very few people in this country including them that would say that the area national media
2:38 pm
is are not oversized in terms of employment i mean. some kind of rationalisation. was long overdue everybody has been always talking about it the socialists have been talking about it when they were in government this government has not only talking or been talking about it but they have laid the people off because they saw that it is unsustainable. so i think. this debate has become very politicized it's more about politics than about professional comments see i mean if something is also staying the boy you have to cut costs and if if something is over bureaucratized. you know you're going to have people laid off so. based on this new media law i think the whole media needs a bit of rethinking including the national media and that is going to be. that is going to hurt some people that's the unfortunate consequence of such
2:39 pm
a situation why did they each east speak out to say very clear on this particular a shame when as he said it's ignored other very important issues that have been happening here in the country why do you think that he has this issue to speak out say very clear about it was an ideological and political. attack now we have a right wing government. and right wing government is always attacked by the left wing liberals in the european parliament this is our past experience. how this works we can only guess we have a socialist party in this country which has extremely good connections in the european parliament. and in the european media and this government the audubon government and i'm seeing this being in opposition so i think this somehow add some value to what i say. in the. in between ninety eight and two thousand and two this government already had one term and it was very interesting to see. the
2:40 pm
volume. and. extensive mess of this criticism that this government has received from outside of hungary and you can expect exactly identify who those people are where the sick criticism comes from and what is the direction of the criticism it is which has something to do with with the fear of for a dictatorship being introduced to hungary you know things are and i mean nothing like that happened exactly and when the socialist government ran this country for eight years nobody said a single word in the european parliament and in the e.u. although we know and this was admitted that hungary and government the socialist government forces. economic statistics that were submitted to the european parliament which is criminal you had the two thousand and six issues when the
2:41 pm
people were shot at on the streets who went on the streets to demonstrate against the prime minister who made the speech the speech was leaked where he admitted to have lied day and night about the economic and other situation in the country and he won the elections through lies and this is this speech was leaked out and there was huge progress in this country. nobody else seems to care in the whole world in the democratic world that usually are worried about democratic values or the values or do you opinion whatever they might be. how they are being respected in this country so i think that there is an extremely strong double standard against this country. which also manifests itself in the criticism that this may be a little has received thanks very much for joining us thank you very much.

success of any team begins and ends with a head coach this is somewhat of a sore point for the army men from russia's northern capital of st petersburg in twenty ten alone scar's a star studded squad was led by three head coaches despite those revamping efforts by the team's board throughout the season the armaments still lost in the conference semifinals against atlanta from the moscow region by the way its atlanta head coach militia gigo who is in now at the helm of scott st petersburg to go about it which had previously played very well in pre-season or could find top spots in the conference and in that league and then some problems emerged with we work on it step by step through the team of experienced in a free game that we will build on now is to pick our heads in the regular championship of the world without beating the drum and proclaiming that we are
