3:01 pm
very good evening it's eleven pm sunday night here in moscow watching r t international with me kevin owen and first the breaking news i mentioned just then rebels have reportedly into tripoli from the west as fighting in libya appears to be intensifying tonight some estimates put the death toll from this weekend alone in the hundreds with around a thousand injured it's also believed that major clashes have seen rebels capture the capital's basis even opposition forces also claim to have freed prisoners locked up during the uprising against gadhafi is regime let's get the latest from independent journalist lizzie feelin she's in tripoli she's been updating us all night lizzie it's good to be on the line again tonight all reports saying the fighting is raging around the capital from where you are what can you tell us.
3:02 pm
a battle going. to tell where i currently am in the ben actual area of tripoli but it does appear that these are relatively small groups. rebel. or whatever you want to call them and not kind of the impression that some kind of troops the opposition has moved into the capital so the question is really how long they can last. against the libyan army which of course is a conventional army and the port here. is in tripoli by the libyan government the beginning of a quite so really we're just raping our and being how long a lot of them you think. about it. they don't have any kind of popular support and they don't. have any kind of they don't have any large numbers but the capital has been. a very long lizzie what pride the picture you flora. what
3:03 pm
is the position on the streets tonight a lot of colonel gadhafi forces out on the streets if the worst should happen. of course the army is very much ready they haven't been using anywhere near the full military capability there are as i said many volunteers ordinary people who have taken up on the right defending their areas but i say late this is not the opposition haven't taken any part but that they are meeting. those. people taken over by the army that one of them. difficult to get rid of rather than taking and keep his thirty. and. fifty libyan having a few problems with the phone line from tripoli tonight obviously there's some problems with everything is going on around you they're wrong colonel gadhafi went on t.v. to say that he would protect tripoli he wouldn't leave tripoli also called on
3:04 pm
people there to take up arms and protect the capital what has the public response been you saying that a lot of the public in the city of very much behind him what was the response to taking a bomb. well yes i said many of the people here have been defending the street ordinary people who have been on the beginning of the crisis that checkpoints across the fifty and then of course there is the threat level inside the city that the tribes from out by the. mind of the baccy of course feel like that about what majority of try to. really be a disastrous situation for the opposition is a big margin. here is the owner so to stay with you as long as we can again we're having some problems with the phone line from you there. i'm taking you what you saying that there are no as you can see at least around you know huge pitched battles on the streets
3:05 pm
nonetheless we're that the rebels with mates are clearing away for them are on their way no matter how you look at it the tension is certainly ratcheting up tonight if they do get into the city the rebels what sort of battle could there be. sorry if you haven't. are hiring in the city that is. really i know in street. at. elysium awfully sorry we're going to have to leave the phone conversation with you there because the quality is deteriorated too much if you can still hear me independent journalist lizzie phailin there from tripoli bring you said today on what she is seeing around her there tonight in that city that all reports say could well be under siege were beginning to be anyway now i spoke to dr franklin lamb
3:06 pm
least from americans for middle east peace and he's also in tripoli he told me the tension is rising with the situation becoming increasingly volatile. and there is some gunfire those bombs on the top of this hotel which is twenty six floors up and you can see plumes of smoke at the marriott hotel all seems to be on fire but. it's near my hotel i don't know if you heard but i i was out in tripoli icicle or ninety minutes this morning and when i came back walking behind it swimming pool of this hotel i was josh. i'm fine. but there was a suggestion that the stock rose on the minute out how about. the people preparing here people are moving around young men on first and others taking up i think the pensive position been going to have various areas where they are directed
3:07 pm
we talk to the rebels actually who want to negotiate i don't want to kill the libyan brothers and sisters this is a needle campaign using the rubble assuring the rebels. only as you know me through the bombing in nato this would have been over by mid march probably a little. early to draw it is clearly nato sworn it was projects they need to stop the. out of this country. some u.s. reaction now even ilands is from the institute in washington independent institute in washington he told me that he believes that much of the media's pandered to western interests in the way that they've reported the civil war. in the western media here particularly in the united states all the western countries the media has sort of been a cheerleader you know. on the on the retreat is almost over so maybe the
3:08 pm
reports are exaggerated but certainly the western media is hopeful because no one likes khadafi and certainly i'm not defending his human rights record but he was the leader of the country and it seemed like the western countries just took advantage of a rebellion to get rid of. of course they haven't really done that on the side in syria they've been very slow because israel doesn't necessarily want to get rid of him. because they're scared of what could happen there but why isn't doesn't the same thing apply in libya what could happen there we don't know it's hard to say during war you get report one report on one thing and then it's contradicted by another but i think the rebels think they have the advantage at this point and they're being helped by the nato. bombing and that sort of thing so i think they think they're almost ready to take tripoli. and some details on the foreign reaction to the events unfolding in libya now from our correspondent in brussels
3:09 pm
daniel bushell correspondent daniel so what does the international community have to say about the latest developments tonight unfolding. for president nicolas sarkozy has that he fully support the rebels in the distance the moment he called and the libyan people used to call them the really great. backing of the rebel provisional council he would like to call gadhafi to immediately give up what he had left as the outcome of rebel victory is no longer in doubt because the idea that it should immediately order his forces to cease fire and to give way to the legitimate as he called it may be in your thirty's now going to be has really to live transmissions in the last twenty four hours he said the libyan people will never allow or oil to go to france of course a major exporter of energy he said he will never allow the collaborator the equal of the french to rule those libyans the crushing the uprising in tripoli as ripple troops are closing in on the capital although somewhat worried that they will
3:10 pm
tripoli that the rebels will pull cart food water and electricity to the capital where you've given the all just open with one base does that very worrying find that for me the billions now security here in the european union to see as well because you will use the international criminal court in baughman place in thought that you that it to justify military intervention in the capital because that's what france is really in the are required to depose the former leader that they claim that there will be a korean who was taking charge but in fact you think that it doesn't generate enough power it's more than pulling the strings militarily because they are also warning a battle in the capital could be extremely bloody street to street warfare also usually support the spending and there are all the fears here that the rebels up. to small and too badly organized to actually handle this fighting ok daniel bush ally europe correspondent thanks for bringing us up to date from your end of it there in paris. cross sport of violence is sort of the middle east this week with
3:11 pm
israel launching airstrikes in gaza which fought back with dozens of rocket attacks latest reports soever suggests that egypt's managed to broker a cease fire between the two sides which could come into effect within the next few hours earlier i spoke to oxys paula slayer of mideast correspondent she's in jerusalem keeping across the latest for you. the reports we're receiving indicate that her master fishel say that cairo has brokered this truce which goes into effect this evening we understand their television was his intent and about making any kind of agreement with the guards are pictures and the militants put down fire first we also understand that it will be the responsibility of her mask security personnel to enforce the cease fire not only this is good news but the reality on the ground is that no one here really believes that a cease fire between the two sides will rast and will survive the test of time this latest violence started on thursday in
3:12 pm
a three pronged attack that left eighty's rabies did not its responded almost immediately with a strikes and those strikes have been continuous since tuesday there have been more than a dozen palestinians killed they have been more than eighty grad and some rockets that have rained down on southern israeli towns killing one israeli and injuring many more so certainly the least since on the ground is that both sides are incredibly angry both sides are incredibly distrustful of the other and one of the sentiments being expressed here in israeli circles today is that the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has been preparing for a war with gaza for some time and every day what happened on thursday was just the opportunity to carry out the assault that we've seen this ties in with the current domestic problems. of israel this very weekend we saw the marches on the streets you have more people protesting about the way that it was handling a lot of the government's domestic policy right now there is some cynicism isn't there about the timing of these. assaults that went on across the weekend at the
3:13 pm
same time as they were demonstrating about the problems within israel but they certainly had some cynicism here in israeli circles when you talk to demonstrators they say that they're not surprised by the latest spate of violence many believe that netanyahu was just hoping for something like this to happen because he has a prime minister that is very strong. on security issues on issues of what what is called terrorism here in israel rather than on addressing socio economic internal problems so for more than a month now you've had tens of thousands of protesters in all the major cities in israel they marched again last night and was before the slogan was a call for social justice they added a new slogan yesterday saying a call for a cease fire now the protesters that i've been speaking to are adamant that they will not let this latest spate of violence detract the netanyahu government from addressing their concerns they plan that by the first weekend in september they'll have a million man march they believe they'll get
3:14 pm
a million israeli citizens to the streets and that's almost one sixth of the population here so this certainly is a lot of disgruntled israelis about domestic issues and if anything ironically this latest spate of violence that they say has made them even more determined to make sure that netanyahu and his government addresses be concerns. to britain were two young girls sentences for using facebook to encourage violent riots the jail terms were praised by prime minister david cameron but slammed by who were rights groups is over the top of his i bet it has more on how the policy of zero tolerance has taken hold in the u k. four years behind bars for the riot that didn't even happen jordan black sure and perry sutcliffe kenan were banged up for inciting disorder on facebook no one turned up after their invitation to riot which they later said was a drunken joke but now they face sentences even tougher than most looters and our
3:15 pm
worry is that it is an imbalance a four year sentence for example would normally be given to somebody for a previous bodily harm for holding someone up with a knife or even for. some form of sexual assault so it seems to me that that there is a danger that the courts are moving into disproportionate territory and that actually devalues our response to more serious crimes that governments encourage courts to dish out harsh sentences by using the public disturbance as an aggravating factor it's meant this man anderson fernandez could even be sent to jail for theft of just two scoops of ice cream because like this one denying bail to most offenders and ignoring any claims of previous good character of the one thousand two hundred seventy seven people charged so far two thirds have been remanded in custody that's way up on last year's rate for serious crimes chris just ten percent some offenders even being made homeless is their punishment with local
3:16 pm
governments taking away their houses but many say it's all simply cause more harm than good i think this is very unwise the move to remove people from housing interim move benefits because actually if we are seeing that some of the crime that we saw on the streets was an expression of people not feeling part to society not feeling part of our communities then these measures are actually going to push people further away from society further away from our communities and far more likely to commit crime the facebook case is the first sign of the government's desire to crack down on social media sites like twitter were applauded by the west to mobilize. the masses in the arab world but they were also instrumental in the u.k. riots so now the prime minister wants it to stop we are working with the police the intelligence services and industry to look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites or services when we know they are plotting violence disorder and criminality when social media fueled revolutions in egypt and
3:17 pm
she needs britain called it democracy but now the shoe's on the other foot when troubles closer to home i'm very conscious we knew you know the. movement we would be the. country's. prime minister says this is where britain fights back but it's feared this fighting fire with fire could only fan the flames of civil disorder after bennett artsy london. of warwick photo freelance investigative journalist who can chandan he told us he believes the harsh response will only lead to more violence across england in the long run and further criminalize vulnerable young people. i think it's quite clear that the government want to send a very draconian message out to young people out there who had any sympathy even with the uprising or the right away if you want to call it that took place but
3:18 pm
never again really can the british government legitimacy criticize any other regime in the world for any human rights abuses when people are facing jail time for scoops of ice cream for mineral water one child stealing a dustbin for his mother listen these young people have been ignored and they've been exploited and oppressed and they just had no voice now through in a very traumatic experience through the writing that they have a voice what is the response again of people is to further criminalize them so if you're going to further criminalize them we're going to get more angry and i'm very regretful to report that the message is going around the street gangs in london and other parts of england is a competition as to who is going to kill the first policeman so this is the this is what we're facing in england now it's a civil war situation. a collective economic government that's the latest measure proposed by top e.u. leaders in the whole market turmoil and reverse the stagnation across the continent
3:19 pm
but the latest idea is a firm little support among investors who say it's comes too little too late clinical or sarkozy rejected the idea of euro bonds favored by the markets and seen by many as the best way of emerging from his desk crisis according to disaster consultant and former belgian m.p. lute of an os the entire affair was a p.r. boost for politicians. and went to london biggest economies of the european monetary union get together that is of course always meaningful if only on the psychological level meetings tend to draw the line of should be the euro zone countries at last in general so we're never did decide there is basically taken by the other countries they're not going after the ones that cost the crisis they're not going after the ones that have the money that we lost in this crisis i mean why not talk about the raising taxes on people why not too are talking about putting social demands on these bailouts for the banks merkel and sarkozy are facing huge
3:20 pm
problems with their popularity in the in the polls so i think it's also do with the image of building us are not so much richer finding a real solution. and yet another blow to the eurozone the block second one hundred sixty billion euro bailout for greece may be under threat athens has agreed to provide finland with collateral in return for its contribution to the financial rescue package but that sparked indignation among the other fifteen donors some of which are now also demanding collateral. the greece is incapable of handing out such guarantees and professor of applied economics patrick says that lack of direction in the e.u. is helping it battle its prices. there's obviously a lot of uncertainty about the eurozone and what will happen because the eurozone summit wasn't very conclusive or helpful in that respect so that's a great deal of uncertainty which is worrying the markets about the situation of
3:21 pm
banks in europe and i think that will be resolved but it may take some time to resolve it that's the problem meanwhile markets are very nervous and the eurozone will be will take time to sort itself out either the euro will break up or they will produce a fiscal union with big transfer to bail all these countries out nobody really in a quite knows which. that won't be resolved anytime soon but i think what it is happening what is happening is that the western economies the richer economies are having a harder time of it because you know all the growth if you like in vail ability of raw materials is being taken by countries like china and india and brazil and so that's leaving very little scope for the richer countries to grow their groaning under these very high oil prices you know which depress their incomes and make them much more cautious. syria's president assad has given a live t.v. interview saying the regime is not in danger of falling that the government is able
3:22 pm
to deal with the current unrest in the country syrian state media have condemned u.s. and european calls for president assad to step down saying the move is part of a conspiracy russia for its parts also rick. used about the calls saying assad should be given more time to implement promised reforms this comes in the wake of a crackdown on anti regime protesters but as it is rare for national reports while the west says the government's action is oppression some in syria do see it as protection. job is done the city liberated there is or in the east of the country has become the last syrian city in left after clearing off extremists that have been terrorizing its citizens for weeks the military claim is that these bandits blocked their weights put up barricades it became a city we were hiding we were just like hostages. soldiers of the syrian army i live in the city of near the iraqi border. officials are saying operation is now
3:23 pm
over that the city has been freed from armed groups as you can see people are welcome in the soldiers as the waiters between the tanks have been trying to make their way through jubilant crowds thousands of kilometers away in the white house a decision has already matured president bashar al assad is the one who's terrorizing the syrian people and that should and. the transition to democracy in syria has begun and it's time for assad to get out of the way not everybody has agreed there moscow has insisted that assad should be given time to implement promised changes his recent decisions to release political prisoners repeal emergency law and allow peaceful demonstrations have indicated the right direction but external pressure could still bury a fragile transitional. reforms will give forces to syria it will make the country stronger but syria's enemies don't want syria to be strong america for instance
3:24 pm
they are sick and tired of a strong syria and they want to weaken it they don't want reforms they need instability and chaos across the country is only supportable and their pressure works for it with contradictory reports about policemen and security officers killed across the country and the army's continued crackdown on protesters despite president assad's pledges to the un to stop military operations the syrian people no longer know who to trust and what to believe. with a country at the crossroad again the on themselves with patience raef notion r.t. syria. sport big news story to the world of football abuzz with news of a new dream taken possibly gathering here on russian soil that says. russian republic of dagestan are expected to sign the superstar striker samuel eto from the italian side into the party's been a coach know as more of a deal that could well prove
