government fails to reassure anxious investors and fresh trouble over greece once again threatens stability. hungary's new media laws created quite a stir in the e.u. with the setting up of a new government controlled authority r.t. sarah first spoke with the country's foreign affairs committee vice chairman to talk about the controversial initiative and the impact it might have on the freedom of the press. it's not been long since hungry handed. the presidency to poland and president mr all down has been pushing ahead with his controversial new media law we're joined now by the vice chairman for the foreign affairs committee at the parliament here in hungary thank you very much for joining us now press freedom is a fundamental principle of the do you think the hungry some even further away from the valleys and stand with this maybe a little more there has been
4:32 pm
a lot of talk especially in the last half year about you values and standards we never really know what this exactly means i mean. and i don't think they'll be you has an almighty right to determine where ly be boundaries of such principles we never really heard their crude clear definition of what exactly these values are what exactly are the fundamentals of these principles and what are the details where exactly are the boundaries of peace so it is always a contentious issue i mean every country every nation state which the e.u. consists of has its own media law has its own institutions that safeguard the freedom of speech or the freedom of press so even in the e.u. the opinions about the hungarian media law have been very diverse it has received criticisms and it has also been defended by some politicians in the e.u.
4:33 pm
of course the green in the liberal fracture in the european parliament has been very hysterical about it. i can understand some of their criticisms but on the other hand in this country we have a long history of when people from outside try to tell us what to do for a long time it was for moscow for fifty years now we have people coming around from brussels from washington rating hungary and freedom of press freedom of speech and . trying to tell us what kind of rules are the best for hungary and we had in this country in the past twenty years during the history of hungary and democracy so to speak previous media law which was very far from perfect. and there were a lot of instances where the freedom of speech has been very seriously attacked on the the on the the embroil of this media law that we never heard anybody say anything in europe or outside of europe criticizing this media law so i
4:34 pm
think that we have to be very careful when we when we judge this of course we have our valid criticisms against this law. to say about the ways in which the law itself was introduced had some people saying that it was done with a lot of secrecy and it seemed to be a little bit underhand what can you tell us about that i think it is very unfortunate when a two thirds majority what the government has in hungary at the moment is used to push through a law very quickly and without very careful consideration first of all i know that there is a huge enticement to do things very quickly and pushing through laws. now that they even have a majority to change the constitution. but i think that the danger is that the law is going to be imperfect this law is imperfect from the point of view that for instance the delegates to this media thora t.
4:35 pm
are purely it's very one sided it's not a balance for it to be only for us members are being delegated into this authority . the leader of this authority is appointed for nine years which is a long it's in the public office that's a long long time you know i mean during nine years more than two elections go past you know and i think it's it's very unfortunate when some people are kind of. stuck to their position you know for nine years the delegates are appointed by the prime minister which is very unusual. the minimum would be that the parliament appoints them and there is some kind of proportionality within this authority and some delegates. of the opposition can also be there because we think that is that would bring. the kind of balanced view supervision to this authority how much of a threat in those press freedoms i don't think it is going to impact that much on
4:36 pm
press freedom press freedom in this country has been it has a long history to say the least in this country we used to have for fifty years. media that was completely centralized and run by the party the communist party of hungary following this we had a very very liberal media law the previous the pretty set of this media that was extremely liberal we had in hungary in journalism newspapers televisions radios the majority of people who used to work in the previous era who used to work in a dictatorship i don't know if somebody coming from the west and. comprehend the situation here i believe just to draw a parallel this is as if in the. second world war germany you would have journalists that have written articles in the focus should be there before the end
4:37 pm
of the second world war you see it's a very obscure situation and the problem is that we have a lot of in the past twenty years we had a lot of accumulated grief. emanating from the media law in this country we have a very very one sided very one sided liberal and left wing type of journalism which nice to be balanced and there is no question about it but i think that now depending. it somehow struck the other direction you see. so i understand the reaction but i think it has gone too far on the other end some people describe this is the government taking a loan to the media there's been a lot of layoffs are the government just trying to cut their own people and power is that tree i'm not a media expert but. i think there are very few people in this country including the socialists who are the loudest about this about this situation that very few people
4:38 pm
in this country including them would say that hungary a national media is are not oversized in terms of employment i mean. some kind of rationalisation. was long overdue everybody has been always talking about it the socialists have been talking about it when they were in government. this government has not only talking or been talking about it but they have laid people off because they saw that it is unsustainable. so i think. this debate has become very politicized it's more about politics than about professional commerce i mean if something is unsustainable you have to cut costs and if if something is over bureaucratized. you know you're going to have people laid off so this whole based on this new media law i think the whole media needs a bit of rethinking including the national media and that is going to be. that is
4:39 pm
going to hurt some people. that's the unfortunate consequence of such a situation why did the each east speak out say very clear on this particular a shame when as you said it's ignored other very important issues that have been happening here in the country why do you think that he has this issue to speak out save a clear about it was an ideological and political. attack now we have a right wing government. and right wing government is always attacked by the left wing liberals in the european parliament this is our past experience. how this works we can only guess we have a socialist party in this country which has extremely good connections in the european parliament. and in the european media and this government the audubon government and i'm seeing this being in opposition so i think this somehow add some value to what i say. in the. in between ninety eight and two thousand and two
4:40 pm
this government already had one term and it was very interesting to see. the volume and an. extensive mess of this criticism that this government has received from outside of hungary and you can mix in exactly identify who those people are where the sick criticism comes from and what is the direction of the criticism it is which has something to do with with the fear of for dictatorship being introduced to hungary you know things are and i mean nothing like that happened exactly and when the socialist government ran this country for eight years nobody said a single word in the european parliament and in the e.u. although we know this was admitted that hungary and government the socialist government forces. economic statistics that were submitted to the european
4:41 pm
parliament which is criminal you had the two thousand and six issues when the people were shot at on the streets who went on the streets to demonstrate against a prime minister who made a speech this speech was leaked where he admitted to have lied day and night about the economic and other situation in the country and he won the elections through lies and this this speech was leaked out and there was huge progress in this country. nobody else seems to care in the whole world in the democratic world that usually are worried about democratic values or the values of the european union whatever they might be. how they are being respected in this country so i think that there is an extremist wrong double standard against this country. which also manifests itself in the criticism that this may be a little has received thanks very much for joining us thank you very much.

a few weeks time clubs from five countries will take part this year but there is by taking a look at one of russia's biggest names scott st petersburg. the success of any team begins and ends with a head coach this is somewhat of a sore point for the army men from russia's northern capital of st petersburg. alone star studded squad was led by three head coaches despite those revamping efforts by the team's board throughout the season the armaments still lost in the conference and in finals against auckland from the moscow region by the way its head coach i mean look at as you go who is in now at the helm of scott st petersburg to go. previously a period of very well every season playing top spots in the conference and. and we did and then some problems emerged with we work on it step by step through the team

look if it's going to stay in a free game we'll build a man's to pick column moving hands in the regular campaign shipped off the mark without beating the drum on proclaiming that we are number one or number two we will simply work on it scott will start the new season without star players like alex a yosh and the other child yannick he again a backup and maksim for shinseki however their presence will hardly be missed as the new coach has attracted a guard in cup winners' patrick source and and carroll because solve among other quite capable players with a major playoff experience i'll say our side what are the playoffs last year i was fine that was a great experience oh it's so it's hard. to have a good crowd surf i really enjoy playing like i said it's something that you work for every year scott began their preparation in the czech republic where the squad concentrated mainly on gaining strength that stand was followed by a brief training camp and that seems home base in st petersburg where the head
