down arms after days of heavy shelling. and other stories that shape the past week a crackdown against english writers gains momentum with harsh sentences handed to those who played only minor parts in the chaos as human rights groups say judges and politicians have gone too far. and the e.u. leaders promise of a single economical government fails to reassure anxious investors as fresh trouble over greece once again threatens stability. but keep you up to date with events from libya throughout the night but first hungary's a new media law has created quite a stir in the e.u. with the setting up of a new government controlled authority furthest spoke with the country's foreign affairs committee vice chairman to talk about the controversial initiative and the impact it might have on the freedom of the press.
6:32 pm
that's not being angst hungry handed it's a taking the presidency to poland and president mr obama has been pushing ahead with his controversial new media laws we're joined now by the vice chairman for the foreign affairs committee at the parliament here in hungary thank you very much for joining us now press freedom is a fundamental principle of the do you think that hungary some even further away from. this with its maybe a little well there has been a lot of talk especially in the last half year about you using standards we never really know what this exactly means i mean. and i don't think they'll be you. know mighty right to determine where ly the boundaries of such principles we never really heard critical your definition of what exactly these values are what exactly are the fundamentals of these principles and what are the details
6:33 pm
where exactly are the boundaries of peace so it is always a contentious issue i mean every country every nation state which the e.u. consists of has its own media law has its own institutions that safeguard the freedom of speech or the freedom of press so even in the e.u. the opinions about the very media law have been very diverse it has received criticisms i'm also being defended by some politicians in the you of course the green and the liberal fraction in the european parliament has been very hysterical about it. i can understand some of their criticisms but on the other hand in this country we have a long history of when people from outside try to tell us what to do for a long time it was for moscow for fifty years now we have people coming around from brussels from washington rating hungary and freedom of press freedom of speech and
6:34 pm
. trying to tell us what kind of rules are the best for hungary and we had in this country in the past twenty years during the history of from here in democracy so to speak previous media law which was very far from perfect. there were a lot of instances where freedom of speech has been very seriously attacked under the on the umbrella of this media law i would never heard anybody say anything in europe or outside of europe or criticizing this media law and i'm so i think that we have to be very careful when really when we judge this of course we have our valid criticisms against islam. to say about the ways in which the law itself was introduced that some people think that it was done with a lot of secrecy it seems a little bit underhand what can you tell us about that i think it is very unfortunate when a two thirds majority what the government has in hungary at the moment is used to
6:35 pm
push through a law very quickly and without very careful consideration first of all i know that there is a huge enticement to do things very quickly and pushing through laws. now that they even have a majority to change the constitution. but i think that the danger is that the law is going to be imperfect this law is imperfect from the point of view that for instance the delegates to this media authority are purely it's very one sided it's not a balanced for it only for the spammers are being delegated into this authority. the leader of this is or it is appointed for nine years which is a long it's in a public office that's a long long time you know i mean during nine years more than two elections go past you know and i think it's it's very unfortunate when some people are kind
6:36 pm
of. stuck to their position you know for nine years the delegates are appointed by the prime minister which is very unusual. but the minimum would be that the parliament appoints them and there is some kind of proportionality within this authority and some delegates. of the opposition can also be there because we think that is that would bring. the kind of balanced view war supervision to this authority how much of a threat in those press freedoms i don't think it is going to impact much on press freedom press freedom in this country has been it has a long history to say the least in this country we used to have for fifty years. media that was completely centralized and run by the party the communist party of hungary following this we have a very very liberal media law previous to pretty censor of this media that was
6:37 pm
extremely liberal we had in hungary in journalism newspapers televisions radios the majority of people who used to work in the previous era we used to work in a dictatorship and i don't know if somebody coming from the west and. comprehend this situation here i believe just to draw a parallel this is as if. course second world war germany you would have journalists that have written articles in it for sure back there before the end of the second world war you see it's a very obscure situation and the problem is that we have a lot of in the past twenty years we have a lot of accumulated grief. emanating from the media or in this country we have a very very one sided very one sided liberal and left wing type of journalism which needs to be balanced out and there is no question about it but i think that
6:38 pm
now the pendulum. somehow struck really the other direction i see. so i understand the reaction but i think it has gone too far on the other end and even to describe this is a government taking a loan to the media in a lot of layoffs all the government just trying to cut their own people and power is that true i'm not a media expert. i think there are very few people in this country including the socialists who are going loudest about this about this situation that very few people in this country including them. see the hungry and national media as a not oversized in terms of employment i mean. some kind of rationalisation. was long overdue everybody has been always talking about it the socialists have been talking about it when they were in government this government has not only talking or been talking about but they have laid people off because they saw that
6:39 pm
it is unsustainable. so i think. this debate has become very politicized it's more about politics than about professional commerce and see i mean if something is also staying the boy you have to cut costs and if if something is over bureaucratized. you know you're going to have people laid off so based on this new media law i think the whole media needs a bit of rethinking including the national media and that is going to be. that is going to hurt some people that's the unfortunate consequence of such a situation why did he speak out saying very clear on this particular issue when as he said it's a signal that other very important issues that have been happening here in the country why do you think that he has they say she'd say very clear about it was an ideological and political. attack now we have
6:40 pm
a right wing government. right wing government is always attacked by the left wing liberals in the european parliament this is our past experience. how this works we can only guess we have a socialist party in this country which has extremely good connections in the european parliament. and in the european media this government the audubon government and i'm seeing this being in opposition so i think this somehow add some value to what i say. in the. in between ninety eight and two thousand and two this government already had one term and it was very interesting to see. the volume and the. extensive mess of this criticism that this government has received from outside of hungary and you can exactly exactly identify who do those people or where the sick criticism comes from and what is the direction of the criticism it is which has something to do with with the fear of
6:41 pm
for. being introduced to hungary you know things are and i mean nothing like that happened exactly and when the socialist government ran this country for eight years nobody said a single word in the european parliament and in the e.u. although we know and this was admitted that the hungary a government the socialist government forces. economic statistics that were submitted to the european parliament which is criminal you had the two thousand and six issues when the people were shot on the streets who went on the streets to demonstrate against a prime minister who made a speech this speech was leaked where he admitted to have lied about the economic and other situation in the country and he won the elections through lies and this this speech was leaked out and there was huge uproar prover in this country. nobody
6:42 pm
else seems to care and the whole world in the democratic world that crucially are worried about democratic values or the values of the european union whatever they might be. how they are being respected in this country so i think that there is an extremely strong double standard against this country. which also manifests itself in the criticisms of this maybe a little has received thanks very much for joining us thank you very much. it can hear dr smile policeman smile and minister smile i just prayed that if you didn't find me if i could slip through the night. i would get my kids out of here because i knew that what was going to happen was that he was going to kill me many victims don't understand their domestic violence includes verbal abuse

you're watching live from moscow with me sean thomas of battle rages in libya multiple reports multiple reports of fierce clashes around tripoli as colonel gadhafi asks citizens to take up arms against the rebels the country's a major military base is now thought to be in rebel hands strengthening their chances of outright victory. suggestions of ceasefire egypt has reportedly managed to convince both gaza and israel to lay down arms after days of heavy shelling. and other stories that shaped the past week the crackdown against anguished rioters gains momentum with harsh sentences handed to those who played only minor parts in the chaos as human rights groups say judges and politicians have gone too far. and e.u.

the western conference and things. which when you come to a new team it's always nice to go for. you know if you go a few games you know. sometimes you're going to mourn so. it was nice of her because they're going to force go for gold. hopefully boost there's a lot more to go. now i saw on the four seasons it's often just a few weeks time clubs from five countries will take part of this year but will start a build up there is by taking a look at one of russia's biggest teams scott st petersburg. the success of any team begins and ends with a head coach this is somewhat of a sore point for the army men from russia's northern capsule of st petersburg into one hundred ten alone scars a star studded squad that was led by three had coaches this white those revamping efforts by the team's board throughout the season the armaments still lost in the

compensated finals against a plot from the moscow region by the way it's a colossal head coach militia gigo who is in now at the helm of scott st petersburg to go. out previously played very well in pre-season or good time top spots in a conference i'm going to leave you with and then some problems emerged with the who work on it state by state with the team move it it's going to stick in a very we'll build a man's to pay column your hair it's going to regular campaign shit doesn't work without beating the drum claiming that we are number one more number two we will simply. scovell start the new season without star players like alex a yosh and the other child yannick he again a back up and mark seems to shinseki however their presence will hardly be missed as the new coach has attracted guarin cup winners patrick tours and and carol because all of them on other quite capable players with the major playoff experience levels their side play out last year i want to file
6:51 pm
a separate experience so it's it's hard. to have really enjoyed playing like that something that you work for every year scott began their preparation in the czech republic where the squad concentrated mainly on gaining strength and that stance was followed by a brief training camp and it seems home base in st petersburg where the head coach has laid down strategy and tactics for the remainder of the pre-season it's been a tough frank you know so far everybody's working to get in shape and. you know i'm good scenes or a simple work i'm. going to right now scuzzy first random match in st petersburg show that this side is ready to reach new heights in the cage shell and that sentiment echoed with the fans as well as they seem delighted supporters with a three two win over another cage hillside third pedal from the shingle girl mind you the match was hardly announced in the media and was held on the practice arena
6:52 pm
however it was still packed to the rafters crocus of the christmas new study thank you yeah it's a pity that some of the stores have left the club and on the other hand i'm glad when i hope to garner how it was like patrick horses plus the defense is another pleasant surprise with rico for us in this from the ministry our new coach is a controversial figure but i hope you will bring the result scott st petersburg have always been one of the top sides during the cage fills a regular season however once the playoffs dawns it seems efforts deflated and some of it was out of contention for the going cup some diehard fans and pundits who are inclined towards mysticism even said that the team is under some kind of a playoff spell the realists though believe it's all about those involved so if you are the man from the banks of the ball river more common than known as the scott think it is very will be looking to break that play of hacks in the upcoming this season then you had coach miller said as a guy who already has that necessary postseason experience has built quite a capable side and it's held so that they knew
6:53 pm
a position would be playing and scott's favor from a cost rep for our team in st petersburg. staying with hawk and since i'm the guy in cup win as i began their campaign all september the ninth against all out favorites scott because i met have recently lost up alonso in pre-season it was of course he takes a look of their preparations. a guards are getting used to life without being on the dino was relinquished his club duties to manage the national team. of those should command the respect of the players. the former defenseman team rushed the bronze at the two thousand and five rule championships and held the now moscow with the russian championship the same year he led enough not too far from the action though taking the time to scope out potential prospects for international duty. was acquired from the off season. and the latvian international is already feeling the
