you know sometimes you see a story and the seem so for like you think you understand it and then he lives something else and you hear see some of the part of it and realize that everything is. going to charge is a big issue. here that we are going to break. i think. we never got here for keeping safe to graduate because the air freed up.
10:31 pm
for. food. stamps and i'd still time award tonight to go to rick perry the texas governor in two thousand and twelve presidential candidate but if you're gaffe since entering the race just about two weeks ago perry is fighting back he went on laura
10:32 pm
ingraham's radio show to discuss why some republicans are attacking him for his outspoken and blunt talk take a listen. look i'm not a stablish man figure never have been and frankly i don't want i dislike washington i think it's just the place but our country is in trouble and i don't have the privilege to sit on the sidelines and watch our country be destroyed. so read think the washington is a seedy place but i just feel so compelled to save this country how noble evan now you can sell rick perry is trying to steal a page from barack obama because that was a lot of pm during the twenty eight or two thousand and eight presidential race hope and change. this is the biggest work this year is. just. this is. so
10:33 pm
a perry is saying is well about the exact same thing that barack obama said just a few years ago about washington it's broken you need someone new to come in and fix it but even better is if you think really really hard to remember the barack obama also didn't could be outside of the george w. bush to the same thing during the two thousand president presidential race where most people understand that. being in washington would necessarily make you the smartest guy in the world that washington is about the only experience in the world remember most people appreciate experience outside of washington. so bush ran as an outsider somebody who would come to washington and change the tone reach across the aisle to get things done i think we all know how that one worked out but bush wasn't even the first presidential candidates try the outsider approach when it comes to winning the white house taking a very back this far. new approach this same old experience is not relevant and you can have the right kind of experience in the wrong kind of experience and mine is
10:34 pm
rooted in the real lives of real people and it will bring real results if we have the courage to change. yeah even bill clinton used the outsider label to try and bring james to washington so i think it's pretty safe to say there's nothing new about trying to be new to washington it's a general thing that all democrats and all republicans are trying to win the white house be the outsider hit the campaign trail that's washington say if the city is broken and you're the only one who can fix it and say that's going to let you in on a little secret these the change any time soon it's certainly not because of the executive branch there is a well oiled machine put into place in this city people who live here are under the beltway bubble money runs d.c. not politicians and the supreme court just. made it that much more difficult to change thanks to their ruling on citizens united so rick perry go ahead try to convince everyone that you're the outsider candidate for two thousand and twelve you can change this cd plates for starters i'm not buying it and secondly it's just an overused entire campaign trick that makes it sound even more like the rest of
10:35 pm
them and that's why you're getting tonight's full time award. now yesterday we spoke to firedoglake jane hamsher about protests in part of the white house those concerned for our environmental future arista rest of the sake for letting president obama know the keystone x.l. pipeline should be built pipeline with stretch seven hundred miles from alberta canada to texas it would deliver seven hundred thousand barrels of tar sands oil a day and just one of many reasons so many environmentalists are so worked up over it is because extracting oil from tar sands is a very expensive it's very difficult process and it releases it more greenhouse gases and other methods out there you see another really big blow to our already injured environment but it looks like the state department has found good in the keystone proposal because they released a statement that was favorable to the seven billion dollars project just today in the statement that said that trans canada had reduced the risk of an accident to an acceptable level and the benefits outweigh the potential costs there's also
10:36 pm
commentary from canadian ambassador to the u.s. gary doer saying if you ask americans would you choose canada over the middle east they'd say yes well you know perhaps the pro canada approach also overshadows the potential threats of this line and state department also estimated that there could be approximately one to two spills per year each greater than twenty one hundred gallons i hope or you know when you put it that way totally puts me at ease because the deepwater horizon spill really that long ago could ever be forget about the horrific damage from that lets on now the state department has given its blessing i'll be kind of shocked if obama doesn't agree to this plan so much that whole and vesting alternative energy concept seems like just like everything else obama has another failed promise just added to the growing pile. now one of president obama's key allies in the two thousand and eight election may have just become one of his worst enemies a.f.l.-cio president richard trumka has expressed his disappointment
10:37 pm
with the administration's policies and focus on deficits rather than jobs but he said that before but today speaking at a press breakfast he doubled down and he went on attack saying the president has aligned himself with the tea party and from his own words he said this is a moment that working people and quite frankly history will judge president obama on his presidency will he commit all his energy and focus on bold solutions on the job crisis or will he continue to work with the tea party to offer cuts to the middle class programs like social security all pertaining the deficit is where our economic problems really lie trump also else the a.f.l.-cio is going to form its own super pac i mean friend withdraw the unions attendance at the upcoming democratic national convention so drunk a serious is the biggest unions in the country go back obama in two thousand and twelve for the damage really be here to discuss this with me is my calculator a journalist and contributing editor for in these times thanks so much for being here tonight to be on the show now before we get into what could be in the future
10:38 pm
let's backtrack really quick if you go back to the election in two thousand and eight talk about how big of a role unions play when it comes to organizing right when it comes to spreading the message you could even say basically campaigning for a democratic president here i mean basically unions were the biggest provider of money to the democratic party that provided hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of ground troops and there were you know union voters people that are union members even if they're white you know world voters tend to vote much more democratic than nonunion members of the apparatus the education effort of organized labor it really helps the democratic party is the backbone so basically if the president obama didn't have the a.f.l.-cio behind him for two thousand and twelve that would be a pretty big blow well you know i think it would really hurt the president but how much do you think the trunk is actually theory is here when he gives these kinds of threats and he said. is that i'm going to bed soon you we're not going to go to the d.n.c. we're not going to support you in the next election i mean this is just kind of big talk but you've got to have you walk well in the same day that trump has said that
10:39 pm
at the christian science monitor press briefing he also told sam stone of hope and post the president is a great friend of organized labor compared to the republicans he's a giant so it really doesn't mean much in two thousand and nine if you're interested at the election altogether now we're just threatening to me to not go to a convention so it's not that huge of a threat ok but so then in your mind you know if we think about you mentioned that you know so much money goes into the unions are the biggest. donors excuse me for a democratic presidents up until that money is money that perhaps you know the members of the unions they don't even necessarily get to choose where their money goes which campaigns they donate to you i mean do they ever feel like they're not being truly represented in what they want what their needs are whether we laws work in this country have to opt in in order to give money to political giving but now we citizens united that line as people are so there's a lot of membership that is very upset with the democratic party and very upset with the direction of it you know especially the failure to stand up and support working people any type of leader love for the president routinely flies around
10:40 pm
with union busters the comcast c.e.o. likely will c.e.o. big g. so there's a lot of anger and the you know we're going to get strapped with the democratic party because for one they don't want to have more republicans in power they don't have more it actually that so they're kind of in this bind with it between a rock and a hard place they don't really have a choice but they can do much more militant things outside of politics like like. for instance with the only big country where we've just focused on a literal strategy we have these huge wisconsin protests but they occupied a capital they shut it down there were strikes there was a lot of tension walker was negotiating before we try to pass through that believe there was a lot of tension and then we just said. our strategy is an electoral strategy we're not going to do the type of workplace troubles that we saw in the one nine hundred thirty s. with the type of direct action we saw in one thousand. sixties and electoral politics don't really work because it's a political game people have to make deals look at greece they have a socialist government they're still cutting the budget they're still doing it i work with things because of the political winds are at this time you have to have
10:41 pm
that clip of tension in the street where you know big corporations have to make a deal politically and they don't feel like they have to make a deal with us this point i'm just wondering how much does that have to do with the union leadership right with people like richard trumka himself that i'm sure you get really nice big fat salaries even though they're the union bosses you know and as you mention this part so one time or one morning he comes out and he makes all these threats to president obama he spouts and angry words your comparison to the tea party our slow glow but then the same day he's also telling other reporters that well he's still the best friend that we have so when you hear that a lot of union members are upset with a democratic party right now when you hear that they're upset with president obama . is their leadership still always going to align themselves with president obama with the democratic party no matter what happens they're not going to call for them to really put that kind of tension in the streets you know they're not and that's the big problem is that you have people that trumpet that you know they really enjoy getting invited to the white house they enjoy that type of access they
10:42 pm
haven't had that for a long time and they enjoy the thing and there's like the stockholm syndrome where a leader leaders are afraid to take on people in power and often it's relationships they have a lot of friends over the way personal friends you know it's not even an issue of money personal friends and they're in the remove from most of the membership so you have president obama you know not really making a stand for workers and in one of the biggest you know attack on unions ever and you know trump is not willing to say anything about i mean you had the tar sands issue that you just brought up i mean look at all the environmental leaders are going to rest of the white house look at all the gay rights leaders who got arrested and they got don't ask don't tell the labor leadership has to do something that kind of tension and they're not willing to do that they have this stockholm syndrome where they're caught in this kind of bind with it won't come out and attack me people because right now or bombers not listen to them. he's not helping them so i don't know what they stand to risk by taking him on other than upsetting a few of their old friends interesting well i guess maybe they that we see richard trumka protesting outside the white house sad you know willing to get arrested
10:43 pm
maybe things will actually change in the meantime but for threats they're probably still going to be at the d.n.c. they're probably still behind me behind the president although it's a very literal twelve construction in terms of sudden. all right well we'll keep an eye on that you like thanks so much for joining us and. coming up next we have our fireside friday and after an earthquake in d.c. this week and a hurricane headed our way i think we all need to get happy and also a gay flash mob targeted michelle bachmann clinic last night walk from texas ranger political right back with all of that. into the mirror would she. do the work to bring justice or. i have every right to know what my government would want to know why i think that's . what i would characterize obama as a charismatic. american exceptionalism.
10:44 pm
you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then something else here's some other part of it and realized everything is just. i'm sorry this is the. year that we in the fourth grade. i think. we haven't got. a ready. made up.
10:45 pm
my. to tonight's friday with your. this friday i want to take some time out to highlight a report that everybody should read the after
10:46 pm
a six month long investigation the center for american progress has released one hundred thirty page report called here inc the roots of the islamophobia network in america how they detail the flow of money that has allowed islamophobia to enter the mainstream in this country over the last ten years and it's no small amount in fact more than forty two million dollars has been poured in by seven foundations all to the hands of a few so-called scholars experts that have tarnished our discussion by spreading hate by spreading fear and most importantly by spreading lots see it would be naive to say that nine eleven didn't permeate many american minds but it didn't change our outlook on the world but at the same time americans still do believe in human rights and civil rights they wouldn't be convinced that some of us deserve different treatment and deserve to be spied on a locked. tortured of somebody wasn't feeding of lies and fear about those individuals even lies about our own president that he's a secret muslim these i'm going to read this report to realize that the sudden
10:47 pm
upsurge in hate towards muslims or fear of sharia realize that's been manufactured much like all the other issues that permeate our political discourse and convince americans that we're also divided they have to understand that today grassroots movements grassroots movements they barely exist anymore the overwhelming emotions that bring americans together are really natural occurrences it takes money to organize to bless in protesters it takes money to conduct studies produce literature paid experts and it also takes money to get publicity that you want be a billboards posters fliers websites are a great p.r. team it sends out your press release contact media organizations tells them that they've got a story just for them on the perfect guest available to talk about it the all that takes a lot of money and it takes planning and unfortunately those willing and able to give the money and hire people to do the planning and often they have a message that they want they have political goal and their own self-interest in mind and that's one of those good turning so if you're wondering live
10:48 pm
a ground zero mosque is the media called it even though it's a community center as well as a mosque that is located two blocks away from ground zero and actually has a name park if you won if you're wondering why that became the biggest story last summer why fox news wouldn't give it up and politicians cried about it and i have a perfect answer it was the money if you're wondering why we're suddenly seeing a surge in states across the u.s. passing anti shari'a legislation even though there is no evidence of creeping shari'a law and even though many of these lawmakers can't even define shari'a some states even copy and pasted their paperwork on it for a week if he via. there's a reason for that like i said not because shari'a law is actually spreading there's actually not a dime of proof for that it's because seven organizations have board forty two million dollars it's. sure that states start thinking that it's a problem and the mainstream media is just so complicit in this entire scheme they take those press releases they invite frank gaffney on and they call him an expert
10:49 pm
it's one thing to bring them on call them out on their lies convince americans that these are crazies that should not be listened to but to treat frank gaffney like an unbiased actor the man that says that all of islam is evil the president is a muslim is outreach to the muslim world as proof that he himself is a radicalized of the muslim brotherhood is trying to infiltrate the republican party i mean i could go on for an hour with his crazy statements but this man is not only crazy in a bigot he's one of the key people it's been getting this money put into his organizations over the years and it's something that we've long spoken about on the show and something that thankfully the center for american progress has been able to devote resources to to connect the dots to put it down on paper and investigate properly the next time that somebody tells you they're afraid of sharia law creeping into their country tell them just read this report.
10:50 pm
ok it's time for happy hour and joining me tonight is andrew blake r t web writer and anthony read from the reason foundation you guys think that much for joining me i think it is the cut off of your title economic director at the reason foundation and we just make it up anyway so i'm doing our to. be downgraded from the tough interview of the show did. just get it ok let's talk about some really really important for important news. we're going to get back take a look. tonight there are some sobering new numbers out america's struggle with obesity the medical journal lancet report a bit of current trends continue half of all american men will be obese by twenty third. that is pretty damn scary if you ask me that half of all americans are going to be obese by twenty thirty. our way i could have told you that if you're going to
10:51 pm
pizza hut wednesday lunch. you don't have to go much further than marriage can't say i have no kind of entries in the real story here that starvation is over. but you know now that obesity is taking over the planet and when i look at the upside bad well that's the sad part right gives you the impression is that they're like there's no equality left in the world now people are they have so much food dispensed they're all obese we're all getting overweight we're also found when there are a lot of people that still live on less than one dollar a day that's where i would have been eight i think it's great that i think it's great that we're getting fat but because we've all known americans are just ballooning off but there are against you. as well think of all of the you know those spreading of democracy and western ideals that americans have always you know pushed out there what's more american than just getting really bad it's about time that the fact that it's passed. this is a link is
10:52 pm
a wonderful example of soft power and how we actually are you know the way that we're actually going to take over the planet is through pizza and burgers. and what's actually funny is that it's oftentimes how our really crappy food in the united states is viewed in other countries. there are places in the middle east where you guys will take their girlfriends on and i speak with workers. it's like that's like the new deal is that. it's not right here you go you one thing. you know it's very true i mean i've been to you know other countries where there are huge lines at mcdonald's but at the same time they think honestly like three stories high and they have a salad bar and they're actually fancy but the fast moving air really gets you know i went on a road trip the other weekend and it's like when you're driving all the time i think this happens for a lot of american families. i'll go you just get past two and i could eat taco bell at least ten times a day so what's your next three shall we from everyone getting fat to everybody
10:53 pm
getting a check out this. michele bachmann's clinic. ok so that if the bachmann clinic where they doubted her it's been found out trying to teach people how to not be gay or at least hear them have their gayness and so that was a nice little hippie dippie fun you know glitter and you know this video is definitely one of the gayest things this year and that's like inappropriate things like it's also it's really also very well coordinated i think there were no i decided i think you can see i don't see that was that was probably the case video of the year yeah this car which is unfortunately was it is like original because it is decided that was my mood like me and all of my heterosexual friends regularly and for all
10:54 pm
glittery people and we thought there was a cool thing and that's it's not cool but now we're just you know people are going to look at us like eight maybe you are bachmann hating gays. probably telling kind of me if you have been i don't really like that ok i'll do it anyway i'm not going to stop doing glitter anytime soon i was disappointed i've heard that this guy got baptized in glitter there and it was more of a sprinkling it was like a full immersion into glitter and i would have been franchise instead of full of our yeah i would get off your eyes and your ear is there like spit it out ok let's move on and talk about chuck norris whom you may remember from his role in walker texas ranger. so check yours is pretty good without his gun you know he's just got his i guess
10:55 pm
you could say his muscles there is. you that was really lame of me. chuck norris who always wants to stick his nose into politics has written an op ed basically warning about the dangers of an un arms trade treaty that's coming out that he basically says that the u.n. is going to be able to come into your home and steal all your guns and hide your wife and do all that. and at least some people actually called a bow and pointed out that this is ridiculous please nobody listen to talk to me is completely wrong here but it's weird trucker's is usually right when when a nurse is always right ok i know you're going to see you soon or you're in danger of being hurt right here right now well especially when it comes to international gun laws and un treaties usually if i get all put into a conniption trying to figure out what the hell's going on or so the first person i go to for the answer is sort of the fact that he got this wrong but i got a renewal where i get a home going to live at home who's going to teach me who's going to guide me through that america now is chuck norris is you know it's happening you know i
10:56 pm
think we should probably trust in the wisdom of chuck norris and that is he was testing us to see if we would really just buy everything he would have to say because clearly he did not read the treaty or anything in its or anything regarding it and we have now passed his test and so i think took notice of the why is why they say ok the only explanation. are final stories that we had an earthquake here and you see this we have a hurricane coming our way this is obviously has the end of the world people including some of my family who is already pretty thing out to that contract and some people are blaming comet which if you remember these are people are talking about. a look at earth distance one point eight one two tell us right now getting near to us by three hundred thousand miles per day and about a week and i was going to be four hundred thousand miles per day and it's going to continue to increase you're going to see more and more volcanoes going off that you're signed away people look you have thirty three folke
10:57 pm
a nose erupting right now in the earth and that number is going to continue to go up as we knew. along the timeline. ok do earthquake than hurricane count you are just talking. about i was actually concerned if i was a person or a computer talking first like i would. like are the computers actually trying to give us a false warning so they could take over the world but as for what i was up to what i think the comet's is giving the computer is their power and you know if i want to know where i'm sitting. the only way to take this is to actually one of the conspiracy theories. and that simply is that the carbon is controlled ok let's start with me again stance we have a sad comment controlling. making answer to a very very very serene thanks for educating me i that's a pretty nice job thanks for tuning in make sure you guys come back on monday fastrack you're out of there i'd think progress vice president of the center for american progress is going to be on a show tell us more about that investigation now in the meantime follow us on
10:58 pm
twitter followers on facebook and coming up next you think it's. internal we're looking with the mechanisms to do the work to bring justice accountability. i have every right to know what my government if you want to know why i think actually that's. what i would characterize obama as a charismatic. american exceptionalism. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so bleak you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else here's some other part of it and realized everything you saw. i'm sorry comes a big. let's
10:59 pm
not forget that we live our. lives one while the lead. whatever the governor says they're going to keep him safe get ready because the afraid of the length. of them. for five ft ft six.
