and follow britain in experiencing social and their. voting has ended in a cause as presidential elections with exit polls suggesting axing vice president and examine the underdog is the frontrunner on the ballot was triggered by the death in office of sergei but caption made that the country which declared independence in the wake of south to set a conflict three years ago. those are the headlines now let's go back to that you'll show them our washington studios. for the. we've got. the biggest issues good voice ceased to face with the news makers. hard time for tonight's told time award and tonight it goes to rick perry the texas governor in two thousand and twelve presidential candidate but if you gas since entering the race just about two weeks ago perry is fighting back he went on laura
11:32 pm
ingraham's radio show to discuss why some republicans are attacking him for his outspoken and blunt talk take a listen. look i'm not a sterile figure never have been incredibly i don't want to be i dislike washington i think it's a cd. but our country. and i don't have the privilege to sit on the sidelines and watch your country be destroyed. so rick thinks the washington is a seedy place but i just feel so compelled to save this country how noble of a now if you can't tell rick perry is trying to steal a page from barack obama because what was obama's even during the twenty eight or two thousand and eight presidential race hope and change. this is the biggest threat this year it's. crazy just to say. this is. so
11:33 pm
a perry is saying is well bout the exact same thing the barack obama said just a few years ago about washington is broken you need someone new to come in and fix it but what's even better is if you think really really hard you'll remember the barack obama also didn't quite be outsiders the george w. bush to the same thing during the two thousand president presidential race but most people understand that. being in washington is necessarily make you the smartest guy in the world they're washing experience about the only experience in the world market most people appreciate experience outside of washington. so bush ran as an outsider somebody who would come to washington and change the tell and reach across the aisle to get things done i think we all know how that one worked out but bush wasn't even the first presidential candidates try the outsider approach when it comes to winning the white house taking a memory back this far into a new approach the same old experience is not relevant and you can have the right
11:34 pm
kind of experience in the wrong kind of experienced miners rooted in the real lives of real people and it will bring real results if we have the courage to change. yeah even bill clinton used the outsider label to try and bring james to washington so i think it's pretty safe to say there's nothing new about trying to be new to washington. the general theme that all democrats and all republicans follow when trying to win the white house be the outsider hit the campaign trail vashon washington say it this city is broken and you are the only one who can fix it and save us i'm going to let you in on a little secret d.c. it's not going to change anytime soon certainly not because of the executive branch there is a well oiled machine put into place in this city people who live here are under the beltway bubble money runs d.c. not politicians and the supreme court just made it that much more difficult to change thanks to their ruling on citizens united so rick perry go ahead try to convince everyone that you're the outsider candidate for two thousand and twelve and you can change this cd place for starters i'm not buying it and secondly it's
11:35 pm
just an overuse entire campaign trick that makes it sound even more like the rest of them and that's why you're getting tonight still time to work. now yesterday we spoke to firedoglake jane hamsher about protests and part of the white house that was concern for our environmental future arista rest of the sake for letting president obama know the keystone x.l. pipeline should be built a pipeline would stretch seven hundred miles from alberta canada to texas it would deliver seven hundred thousand barrels of tar sands oil a day and just one of the many reasons so many environmentalists are so worked up over it is because extracting oil from tar sands is a very expensive it's a very difficult process and it releases more greenhouse gases in the other methods out there due to yet another really big blow to our already injured environment but it looks like the state department has found good in the keystone proposal because they released a statement that was favorable to the seven billion dollars project just today in the statement that said that trans canada had reduced the risk of an accident to an
11:36 pm
acceptable level and the benefits outweigh the potential costs there's also commentary from canadian ambassador to the u.s. gary doer saying if you ask americans would you choose canada over the middle east they'd say yes well you know perhaps the pro canada approach also overshadows the potential threats of this pipeline and state department. also estimated that there could be approximately one to two spills per year each greater than twenty one hundred gallons of hope or you know when you put it that way totally puts me at ease was the deepwater horizon spill really that long ago that everybody forget about the horrific damage from that mess well now the state department has given its blessing i'll be kind of shocked if obama doesn't agree to this plan so much for the whole investing in alternative energy concept seems like just like everything else obama has another failed promise just added to the growing pile. now one of president obama's key allies into the two thousand and eight election may have just become one of his worst enemies and fell c.e.o.
11:37 pm
president richard trumka has expressed his disappointment with the administration's policies and focus on deficits rather than jobs but he said that before but today speaking at a press breakfast he doubled down and he went on attack saying the president has aligned himself with the tea party and from his own words he said this is a moment that working people and quite frankly history will judge president obama on his presidency will he commit all his energy and focus on bold solutions on the job crisis or will you continue to work with the tea party to offer cuts to the middle class programs like social security all while pretending the deficit is where our economic problems really lie trump also announced the a.f.l.-cio is going to form its own super pac and he threatened to withdraw the unions attendance at the upcoming democratic national convention so trump is serious if the biggest unions in the country don't back obama two thousand and twelve back of the damage really be here to discuss this with me is my calculator a journalist and contributing editor for in these times mike thanks so much for being here tonight good to be on the show now before we get into what could be in
11:38 pm
the future let's backtrack really quick if we go back to the election in two thousand and eight talk about how big of a role unions play when it comes to organizing right when it comes to spreading the message you can even say basically campaigning for a democratic president here i mean basically the unions were the biggest provider of money to the democratic party to provide that one hundred. of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of ground troops knock on doors you know union voters people that are union members even if they're white you know we're all voters tend to vote much more democratic than nonunion members so the apparatus the education effort of organized labor really helps the democratic party and is the backbone so basically if the president obama didn't have the a.f.l.-cio behind him for two thousand and twelve that would be a pretty big blow well yeah i think it would really hurt the president but how much do you think that trump is actually theory is here when he gives these kind of threats and he says that i'm going to bed in you we're not going to go to the d.n.c. we're not going to support you in the next election i mean this is just kind of big talk but he's not going to have any walk well in the same day that trump has said
11:39 pm
that at the christian science monitor press briefing he also told sam stein of huffington post the president is a great friend of organized labor compared to the republicans he is a giant so it really doesn't mean much in two thousand and nine if they're in the sit out the election altogether now we're just threatening to maybe not go to a convention so it's not that huge of a threat ok but so then in your mind you know if we think about you mentioned that you know so much money goes into unions are the biggest. donors excuse me for democratic presidents how much of that money is money perhaps you know the members of the unions they don't even necessarily get to choose where their money goes which campaigns they donate to i mean do they ever feel like they're not being truly represented in what they want what their needs are whether we laws work in this country have to opt in in order to give money to political giving but now we citizens united that line has been blurred so there's a lot of membership that is very upset with the democratic party and very upset with the direction of it you know especially the failure to stand up and support
11:40 pm
working people in any type of form the president routinely flies around with union busters the comcast c.e.o. like honeywell c.e.o. big g. so there's a lot of anger and the you know we're going to get strapped with the democratic party because for one they don't want to have more republicans in power they don't have more attacks like that so they're kind of in this by. where they're between a rock and a hard place they don't really have a choice but they could be doing much more militant things outside of politics like quite well for instance where the only big country we're just focused on that we have these huge wisconsin protests where they occupy the capital they shut it down there were strikes there was a lot of tension walker was negotiating before you try to pass through that believe there was a lot of tension and then we just said all right we're going to or our strategy is an electoral strategy we're not going to do the type of workplace struggles that we saw in the one nine hundred thirty s. where the type of direct action we saw in the one nine hundred sixty s. and electoral politics don't really work because it's a political game people have to make deals look at greece they have a socialist government they're still cutting the budget they're still doing it to
11:41 pm
work with things because of where the political winds are at this time you have to have that tape or tension in the street where you know big corporations have to make a deal politically and they don't feel like they have to make a deal with us at this point but i'm just wondering too how much is that have to do with the union leadership right with people like richard trumka and self that i'm sure really nice big fat salaries even though they're the union bosses you know and as you mentioned just parcel one time or one morning he comes out and he makes all these threats to president obama he spouts and angry words to in comparison to the tea party our slow blow but then the same day he's also telling other reporters that well he's still the best friend that we have so when you hear that a lot of union members are upset with a democratic party right now when you hear that they're upset with president obama . is their leadership still always going to align themselves with president obama with the democratic party no matter what happens they're not going to maybe call for them to really put that kind of tension in the streets you know they're not and that's the big problem is that you have people that trumka that you know they
11:42 pm
really enjoy getting invited to the white house they enjoy that type of access they haven't had that for a long time and they enjoy that type of thing and there's like the stockholm syndrome where libra leaders are afraid to take on people in power and often it's relationships they have a lot of friends over there at the white house personal friends you know it's not even an issue of money personal friends in the in the removed from most. the membership so you have president obama you know not really making a stand for workers only in one of the biggest attack on unions ever and you know trump is not going to say anything about i mean you had the tar stance issue that you just brought up i mean look at all the environmental leaders they're getting arrested outside of the white house look at all the gay rights leaders who got arrested and they got don't ask don't tell the labor leadership has to do something kind of tension and they're not willing to do that they have this stockholm syndrome where they're caught in this kind of bind where they won't come out and attack these people because right now obama's not listening to them he's not helping them so i don't know what they stand to risk by taking him on other than upsetting a few of their old friends interesting well i guess maybe they that we see richard
11:43 pm
trumka protesting outside the white house you know being willing to get arrested maybe things will actually change but in the meantime the threats are probably still going to be at the d.n.c. they're probably still behind me behind the president. twelve construction himself so they're not going all right well we will keep an eye on that too mike thanks so much for joining us. coming up next we have our fireside friday and after an earthquake in d.c. this week a hurricane headed our way think that we all need to get happy and also a gay flash mob targeted michele bachmann clinic last walk through texas ranger political right back with all of that. nearly a billion people in the world are going on. in the united states even our trash cans or food that. you just have to go get all of these perfectly good eggs because
11:44 pm
one was didn't even get all over the other ones just threw them away she was from the german so you know we really like. the dumpster at one am this morning three pm this afternoon on the grill him. it is made from and one doesn't dumpster egg whites. delicious breakfast for the family takes some toast for about a week every year in america we throw away ninety six billion pounds of food.
11:45 pm
it should be soon right. from science to. stop time don't come home. to tonight's fight inside your. car. this friday i want to take some time out to highlight a report that everybody should read see after a six month long investigation as center for american progress has released one hundred thirty page report called fear inc the roots of the islamophobia network in america now they detail the flow of money that has allowed islamophobia to enter the mainstream in this country over the last ten years and it's no small amount in fact more than forty two million dollars has been poured in by seven foundations all to the hands of a few so-called scholars experts that have tarnished our discussion by spreading
11:46 pm
hate by spreading fear and most importantly by spreading lies see it would be naive to say that nine eleven didn't permeate many american minds that didn't change our outlook on the world but at the same time americans still do believe in human rights and civil rights they wouldn't be convinced that some of us deserve different treatment and deserve to be spied on a locked up or tortured of somebody wasn't feeding them lies in fear about those individuals even lies about our own president but he's a secret muslim these i'm going to read this report to realize that the sudden upsurge in hate towards muslims or fear of shari'a to realize that it's been manufactured much like all the other issues that permeate our political discourse and convince americans that were also divided they have to understand that today grassroots movements grassroots movements. they barely exist anymore these overwhelming emotions that bring americans together there are rarely natural occurrences it takes money to organize to bus in protesters it takes money to conduct studies produce literature pay experts and it also takes money to get
11:47 pm
publicity that you want to be a billboards posters fliers websites are a great p.r. team it sends out your press release contacts media organizations tells them they've got a story just for them and the perfect guest available to talk about it the all of that takes a lot of money and it takes planning and unfortunately those willing and able to give the money and hire people to do the planning well often they have a message that they want spread they have political goal and their own self interest in mind and that's how they get turning so if you're wondering why the ground zero mosque is the media called it even though it's a community center as well as a mosque it is located two blocks away from ground zero and actually has a name park fifty one if you're wondering why that became the biggest story last summer why fox news wouldn't give it up and politicians cried about it when i have the perfect answer it was the money if you're wondering why we're suddenly seeing a surge in states across the u.s. passing anti shari'a legislation even though there is no evidence of creeping
11:48 pm
sharia law and even though many of these lawmakers can't even define shari'a some states even copy and paste of their paperwork on it for a week at pedia. there's a reason for that like i said not because shari'a law is actually spreading there's actually not a dime of proof for that it's because seven organizations have board of forty two million dollars into making sure that states start thinking that it's a problem and the mainstream media is just so complicit in this entire scheme they take those press releases they invite frank gaffney on and they call him an expert it's one thing to bring them on call them out on their lies convince americans that these are crazy is that should not be listened to but to treat frank gaffney like an unbiased actor the man that says that all of islam is evil the president is a muslim it is outreach to the muslim world is proved. he himself is a radicalized of the muslim brotherhood is trying to infiltrate the republican party i mean i could go on for an hour with his crazy statements but this man is not only crazy and a bigot he's one of the key people that's been getting this money put into his
11:49 pm
organizations over the years and it's something that we've long spoken about on the show and something that thankfully the center for american progress has been able to devote resources to to connect the dots to put it down on paper and investigate properly the next time that somebody tells you they're afraid of sharia law creeping into their country tell them just read this report. ok it's time for happy hour and joining me tonight is andrew blake r t web writer and anthony read from the reason foundation you guys think that much for joining me and i think i just cut off some of your title economic director at the reason foundation but you just make it up anyway what i'm doing are to you know if you can be whatever you want to downgraded from the top interview of the show did. just get
11:50 pm
it ok let's talk about some really really important for important news. we're all going to get back take a look. tonight there are some sobering new numbers out america's struggle with obesity the medical journal lancet report a bit of current trends continue half of all american men will be obese by twenty thirty. that is pretty damn scary if you ask me that half of all americans are going to be obese by twenty thirty minute it's not that far away i could have told you that if you're going to pizza hut wednesday lunch buffet you don't have to go much further than their camp saying i have no kind of entries in the real story here that starvation is over. but you know now that obesity is taking over the plane it's well. when i look at the upside that will that's the sad part is that gives you the impression is if that they're like there's no inequality left in the world now people are they have so much food that they're dispensed but they're all of these we're all getting overweight and we're also found when there are
11:51 pm
a lot of people that still live on less than one dollar a day that's where i would have nothing to eat i think it's great that i think it's great that we're getting fat. because we've all known americans are just ballooning up but they're just you know if you think you're as well think of all of the you know the spreading of democracy and western ideals that americans have always pushed out there what's more american than just getting really fat it's about time but the fact that it's fast food this is the link is a wonderful example of soft power and how we actually are you know the way that we're going to take over the planet is through you know pizza hut burger king so what's actually funny is that is oftentimes how are really crappy food in the united states is viewed in other countries. there are places in the middle east that i've been where you guys will take their girlfriends on in my state to burger king. it's like that's like the mood to. go to. america is that right here if you go if you. know it's very true i mean i've been
11:52 pm
to you know other countries where there are huge lines of the mcdonald's but at the same time so they think honestly like three stories high and they have a salad bar and they're actually fancy but the fast food thing we get the you know i went on a road trip the other week and that's like when you're driving all the time i think this happens for a lot of american families they're always on the go you just get fast food and i could eat taco bell least ten times a day all right let's move on to our next story shall we from everyone getting fat to everybody getting get a check out this. michele bachmann clinic. ok so that if the bachmann clinic where they now and. it's been found out tried to
11:53 pm
teach people how to not be gay or at least cure them of their gayness and so that was a nice little hippie dippie flash mob you know glitter and you know that this video is definitely one of the gayest things this year and that's like inappropriate things like it's awesome it's really also very well coordinated i think there were no i decided that i think you can see i think you know that was that was probably the gays video of the year yeah this call which is unfortunately what i was going to do like originally because it is decided that that was my movie like me and all of my heterosexual friends regularly for a glitter of people and we thought that was like a cool thing and not say it's not cool but now we're just you know people are going to look at us like hey maybe you are bachmann hating gays. probably telling fine of me if you i mean i don't really like them ok i'll do it anyway i'm not going to stop there and literally times i was disappointed i heard that this guy got baptized in glitter there and it was more of a sprinkling it wasn't like a full immersion into glitter and that would have been fantastic status full of our yeah i would and also your eyes and your ear as you're like an allegory ok let's
11:54 pm
move on and talk about chuck norris whom you may remember from his role in walker texas ranger. so even though jack you are pretty good without a gun you know he's just out his theory i guess you could say his muscles but you could it was really lame of me. chuck norris who always wants to stick his nose into politics has written an op ed basically warning about the dangers of an un arms trade treaty that's coming out that he basically says the u.n. is going to be able to come in your home and steal all your guns and hide your why do all that. and at least you know people actually called him out and pointed out that this is ridiculous please nobody listen to chuck norris is completely wrong
11:55 pm
here but it's weird chuck norris is usually right when when a nurse is always right ok i might as well you're right here is the reason or you are in danger of being hurt right here right now well especially when it comes to international gun laws and u.n. treaties usually if i get all put into a conniption trying to figure out what the hell is going on chuck norris is the first person i go to for the answer is the fact that he got this wrong but i don't know where i get a home going to live how he's going to teach me who's going to guide me through fat america now if chuck norris is you know what's happening you know i think we should probably trust in the wisdom of chuck norris and that is he was testing us to see if we would really just buy everything he would have to say because clearly he did not read this treaty or anything in it or anything regarding it and we have now passed his test and so i think took notice of the why is why they say ok the only explanation we want to our final stories that we had a earthquake here in d.c. this week of a hurricane coming our way this is obviously has the end of the world weary people
11:56 pm
including some of my family who is already freaking out to that contract and some people are blaming comment you know which if you remember these are the people who are talking about it. ok look at their distance one point they want to tell us right now getting near to us by three hundred thousand miles per day and about a week that number's going to be four hundred thousand miles per day and it's going to continue to increase you're going to see more and more volcanoes going off that you're signed away people look you have thirty three folk a nose erupting right now in the earth and that number is going to continue to go up so we moved. along the timeline. ok do earthquakes and hurricanes count too or just volcanoes. i don't know i was actually concerned if i was a person or computer talking first like i would. like are the computers actually trying to give us a false warning so they can take over the world by this freak out of the i think the comet is giving the computer is their power in the not so how can i get some power he knows that's i'm suggesting. that the only way to take this is to actually
11:57 pm
one of the conspiracy theories have been in it and that simply is that the comet is control of the spoke a that's wrong with me. stance we ever saw and comet is controlling. the ball he hasn't figured out a very serene thanks for joining our bedroom for nights out thanks for tuning in and make sure you guys come back on monday fastrack here and there and and think progress and vice president of the center for american progress is going to be on the show tell us more about that investigation now in the meantime follow us on twitter followers on facebook and coming up next you think it's. because you know song was sixteen years old when he committed these murders that's not to say that song so it should not be punished for his crimes song used. no
