libya's rebels and nato are closing in on colonel gadhafi as hometown words believe he might be hiding while western countries wasted no time in securing big business and a war torn country. a battle that the u.n. russia calls for a dialogue to broker a peace in syria accusing the u.s. and european states of showing by siding with anti-government protesters. a british court is accused of gagging a world war two veteran by jailing him for speaking out against corruption in the judiciary.
12:01 am
and i am in the russian capital you're watching r t i'm marina joshie welcome to the program the levy rebels are advancing on colonel gadhafi is hometown of sirte where the help of aerial support from nato british tornado jets have fired cruise missiles at least command and control bunker and the town regarded as good as his last stronghold the nato bombings come despite previous statements from the lines that it wasn't assisting rebels in their hunt for khadafy meanwhile hundreds of bodies have been found abandoned at a hospital in tripoli after staff fled the facility as rebels advanced there's also been intense fighting near tripoli's international airport artie's marie ivanovna who is in the capital says many there are now living in constant fear. khadafi still remains the goal number one for the rebels and since the beginning of the commission here live in capital tripoli we've been hearing numerous reports and we've been hearing numerous statements by the leaders all the rebels of a new khadafi some. first as you remember they've announced that they've captured
12:02 am
safely slanted of his son and then it turns out that he actually hasn't been captured then we've been receiving information that the rebels know he's here in tripoli and the ravens had blood they've corners khadafi and that's been in headlines. many international news channels for quite a while but it actually didn't end with any concrete detail and can create a success as well we are receiving reports that the rebels have flooded the streets of tripoli trying to hunt down khadafy what we saw while driving from the tunisian libyan border to the capital tripoli differs a lot from what we used to see here in june and july when the western part of the country had been controlled by kentucky's forces. flags. waving everywhere and all the buildings all the walls covered with profit say in arabic
12:03 am
english and french are welcome to new libya welcome to freely meanwhile reminders of the recent battles everywhere we've seen many bands and tanks burned cars actually we've also got a feeling that the rebels are the only people left in libya because of the species we've been driving through looped abandoned empty like ghost cities. brave national reporting there meanwhile the race for libya's vast oil wealth is gathering momentum states who work together during the nato airstrikes are now working against each other in a battle to secure a lucrative contract that is or at least sara first reports it's led to fear is that a new regime in libya could easily slide into corruption. half a billion dollars from italy now a whopping one point five billion from the u.n. that's on to pursue three hundred million dollars from turkey it's questions abound about the future of the case here it's the money that's been talking aloud
12:04 am
governments have a strong interest in. opening up business for. everybody is reason. foreign minister has tonight there's a race on with france to be the first on the ground to restart business in libya but the italians have me clear their eagerness to maintain the extremely close trade ties they enjoyed under the gadhafi regime that is the money begins to flow to help the national transitional council and it takes power but the question mark remains a great sack these fast funds belong in the states which is coming to an end the borderline between wealth the problem well for the good of his family and the wealth of the state were not very clear so it's hard to see how much of this money was directly in the nation of the past as well and how much of it
12:05 am
was actually. could be categorized as libyan assets because he family were authentic keys of easing libya's riches is their own personal pocket money now there are concerns that the unfreezing of libyan assets without effect is monitoring key to aid in the floodgates to new corruption. everybody's trying to. you know it's sort of. trying to exploit this war to feed everybody police have oil gas and infrastructure projects to follow as the war torn country rebuilds and. everyone it seems wants a slice of the action a war is a moment of opportunity of making profits by war is nowadays indispensable for western economies western interests. you destroy your appeal because for every
12:06 am
european it's like. it's not just italy that have been trying to keep the national transitional council on sight like it or not many western countries pay for libya or mean big business that. journalist pappas kabar says nato is selling a story of a rebel victory to the world when in fact a u.s. undercover operation was the driving force and removing colonel gadhafi this story from the beginning was our two people responsibility to protect their as the basis for a u.n. resolution one hundred seventy three there is that neither of the agreement between the u.s. and saudi arabia we get a resolution based on your fake arab league vault nine countries out of twenty two and you can do if you want with the arena in saudi arabia itself but this was the cover story sold to american and european public opinion especially the chinese the russians many people in brazil for their they're not buying it they know it's
12:07 am
a us need to coordinate our operation without them there will be no this will be a stalemate will go for ever and we have international community sort of basically atlanticist powers he can sides in a civil war so windy knew that they could go on for months or years on end it's ok let's try to take tripoli in one day and they did it because they blew basically they bombed the whole city and away towards the sea. as journalist curtis who are commenting on new year's role in libya. french diplomatic efforts to and own going violence in syria have been made by russia as it's introduced its own draft u.n. resolution moscow is calling on both sides in the country to engage in dialogue and for president bashar to lawsuits to speed up promised reforms or he's going to gun is across the latest. it looks like we're going to see a battle of two different versions of resolutions on syria the u.n. security council russia is putting forward its draft resolution which will be an
12:08 am
alternative to the resolution that the u.s. and european representatives are putting together a letter has already been dubbed as sanctions resolution the u.s. and european leaders want to put more pressure on the syrian government whereas the russian version of the resolution makes two very important points first of all it cost to the syrian government to expedite the implementation of the reforms that president assad has announced in order to effectively address the legitimate aspirations and concerns of the syrian people and second it urges the syrian opposition to engage in political dialogue with the syrian authorities about what reforms to carry out in the country the syrian opposition back on people be more forthcoming in that direction so a very important difference there the russian draft resolution does not put pressure on just one side it calls for dialogue it costs for restraint on both sides and here is more on that from russia's and going to the united nations who spoke with us earlier if there are some constructive ideas from our colleagues were
12:09 am
prepared to absorb them but of course simply you know marrying the two would go to different species from two different planets so what we're seeing from. colleagues the u.k. and others it's completely biased on the leaning exclusively on the syrian government that doesn't have anything about the need for dialogue doesn't encourage your position for in fact our concern is that it's going to push the the more extreme the more destructive elements of the syrian opposition towards. even stronger efforts in order to topple the syrian government so that's why we don't like at all. to achieve by that the resolution of and i propose an alternative to keep the security council involved but to have a vote to do. for months russia has been pointing at the problem with the attitude the west of the west towards the dramatic developments in syria also says that.
12:10 am
exclusively about exerting pressure on one of the parties namely the syrian government and president which effectively sends the wrong message to the syrian opposition prompting them to believe that if they remain insistent on the situation keeps getting critical the west will come to help them you know the way it happened did leave on a number of occasions the russian resolution calls on the syrian authorities to allow unhindered access to international humanitarian agencies and to fully cooperate with the un commissioner for human rights and now as for how the resolution how far the resolution can go both russia and the u.s. have veto power as we know along with china the u.k. and france and that means whatever resolution comes out at the end of the day it has to be acceptable for at least all of the five permanent members of the u.n. security council if they don't agree there is going to be no resolution it's going to reporting from washington d.c. there are you watching r.t.

a british judge his crime recording a court hearing he said he did it because he's hard of hearing but the judge didn't accept that it was a very harsh sentence and i believe he was because he isn't putting the group in the judiciary you see them frown upon a scarth is no stranger to the legal system he won a case in the european court of human rights banning secret hearings yet still some cases in england are heard behind closed doors and recording and taking photographs is forbidden unlike in other e.u. countries scott attends demonstrations where he shouts about corruption in the police and judiciary saying lawyers the police and the courts are in cahoots and regularly persecution gag those who disagree with them that's why m.p. john hemming suspects the judge was trying to shut him up we have in theory in this country called freedom of expression not as people write about what they see as

wrong as long as the telling the truth and i'm very worried this is an attempt to gag an elderly gentleman who may not always be right but he has a right to. luckily for scott he has friends with knowledge of the law and they're acting for him normally the poor to the poor his case here to the boiled court of justice but they don't feel justice is being served to heaven meanwhile god claims he's being denied it then chilled medication in prison according to reports conditions in leeds prison but the war veteran can't get any exercise because he's unable to walk for the entire hour allocated scott also says he's being denied access to a lawyer by his jailers troops are going on every day every fall the release like this what would you. norman scarth has vowed to keep fighting to expose corruption just as he fought all those years ago to keep fascism out of his country the irony is the country he fought for is now the one he's fighting against you know and it's

so even if they build one or two or even three more at risk areas they're nowhere near the level they would need to challenge the united states. that was khan hall an expert on asian military affairs there now let's have a look at some other stories making headlines around the world islam is the militant group has admitted responsibility for the deadly attack on the u.n. headquarters in the nigerian capital abuja it happened on friday when a car rammed through two security gates despite guards opened fire at least eighteen people were killed in the suicide bombing well dozens were injured some of them critically a car full blast destroyed the lower floors of the building. but the mexican government is offering a two point four million dollars reward for information about a deadly raid on a casino the attack in the city of monterrey left over fifty people dead

here up it's a place full of community spirit were for many people family comes first and authorities eager grogginess reports the city is leading the way in a pioneering project to find homes for the orphans. personal tragedy and difficulty to overcome being an orphan there's also social problems and russia thousands of thousands of orphans but in fact most of them have parents or relatives outside of the orphanage but these people simply do not want to look after them or cannot be trusted to do so so this is something to be solved on a social level where the general social problems caused these children to be taken away how can they be tackled so it's not necessarily something that either an individual orphanage or an individual part of russia can provide but they will save the care of region by trying to say ok we're being dealt with all these orphans we're receiving all these people but at least all we can do is provide them
12:22 am
a new home and that's what i tried to do as you can see my records. in russia it's hard enough to find a new family for healthy all phones it's even harder for children like these all been diagnosed with serious physical mental or psychological disability. here at kira's orphanage number one they manage it well and russians are currently a hundred and fifty thousand children who haven't been adopted here ninety eight percent of all orphans find a new family before the six. or so many orphanages exist by themselves in isolation we are reaching out to the potential parents and the authorities and working with them. first course of action is to try and place the children back with logical parents who often give them up scared off by the diagnoses often and show that with the right care these children can lead normal lives that parents have to prove
12:23 am
their attitude has changed for other potential adopters their educational courses and ongoing medical support all basics in the west but hardly universal in russia yet staff say these on the main reasons for their success. but it doesn't matter how good the silly. these are here and what care the children receive we all of the staff here still know than an orphanage is no substitute for a family a quick straw poll shows us much more of that our young people there are three of us here me and my two sisters we really want to be adopted by the same family but not everyone wants three kids if the orphanage is track record is anything to go by they'll soon find a family. where the far new families for these children are commendable but under is only so much that an orphanage can do to solve the problem of adoption costello not only adopted four children from orphanage number one but also sits on an adoptive parents committee yes. i think the problem is the social attitude towards
12:24 am
the children it's not a case of money where an average family all the state support is really there you just have to know of the children themselves alone it is fourteen says she was betrayed by her parents and those who promised to adopt her and of it did then she finally found a home. in the home we were always just a part of a group but here in the family you are needed by someone there is not tenderness more love i'm happy. with the last. so often it does make an effort to connect with the world outside an adoption becomes more widespread in society they'll be more happy endings like this one you are ordinary . kiran. well remember there is more on our website r.t. dot com we've got a lot more stories and analysis for you there but here's a taste of what we've got there for you today frances finding it hard to crunch the
