9:30 pm
ritzy where we had a state controlled capitalism is called satchels when nobody dares to ask we do our tea question more. for. welcome back to the big picture i'm sorry coming up in this half hour justice is
9:31 pm
served for agency achievable customers pending merger which would have skyrocketed millions of cell phone bills is shot down by the department of justice so will this big win for consumers stand alone t.n.t. keep up the fight over the wireless market and why senator chuck grassley blind to his constituents about the g.o.p.'s plan to privatizing social security and ideally take i'll tell you about the drastic measures republicans are resorting to in order to keep their and could stitch us in the dark about their radical agenda. in the best the rest of the news so much free t. and cs plans to buy a wireless competitor to mobile it just as filed suit yesterday against the proposed merger arguing that at the nation's second biggest wireless telecommunications providers the merger of the nation's fourth largest provider the mobile. and consumers would end up getting screwed as they were by the deputy
9:32 pm
attorney general the united states james cole read a combination of a t. and t. and t. mobile would result in tens of millions of consumers all across the united states facing higher prices fewer choices and lower quality products for mobile wireless services this lawsuit seeks to ensure that everyone can continue to receive the benefits of that competition. he was willing to drop thirty nine billion into the buyout and not too pleased with the job department justices decision to file suit against it releasing a statement today saying we are surprised and disappointed by today's action particularly since we have met repeatedly with the department of justice and there was no indication from the d.o.j. that this action was being contemplated to d.o.j. has the burden of proving alleged anti-competitive effects and we intend to vigorously contest this matter in court so is the. merger dead or is this just the beginning of the fight joining me now is some more insight into this issue as matt would say director of free press that welcome back i thought i
9:33 pm
read i'm going to have you with us. why the lawsuit what's the strategy here is the first order to strike back to the sherman act of eight hundred eighty one the sherman antitrust as well as a through so much from an i but also the clayton act and this is a violation of section seven of the clayton act if you want to try to hold out as he later claimed i could just another any trust that you know there is particularly one section that says that actions that would substantially less than competition in their state in an interstate market such as wireless telecommunications can be blocked by the department just order was the point that passed i think it's nine hundred fourteen although i would want to be clear on that it was back during the rest of her basically a follow up to the sherman act and gave the o.j. and estate more powers than the trauma that gives them and made it worse is that i mean the sherman act was like two paragraphs it was very very very vague right and it gotten progressively more detailed as time has gone along and business has taken a more sophisticated combination is that the o.j. sometimes investigates and this case tries to block. will this ultimately be decided by the by the d.o.j. or only the f.c.c. has been side. doubles well no i don't think that's quite fair the o.j.
9:34 pm
has to not sue as they've done here they can sue to block the merger of the f.c.c. also has to approve the merger and they're the burden is in fact on a t.n.t. so it's a little different from what he described for the department of justice situation the o.j. has the burden in an antitrust suit but he has the burden for the f.c.c. they haven't been sidelined but they can choose to approve or not kind of based on what the o.j. does are based on their own analysis and they're of course reviewing the deal as well as the as he sees the d.o.j. as creature is what's best for competition what's best for the public right what's the secret you're the f.t.c. the criteria is even stronger and sometimes it has a higher burden for me and he has to show that the deal is in the public interest and they've said all along that it is and organizations like mine of free press and others and frankly a lot of companies as well as that it's not the public interest but it will do all those things that today the department just said it would do less in competition raise prices the crease innovation hurt consumers and kill jobs well. if any sense of which way this is going to go well i mean you asked in the beginning
9:35 pm
if this is dead now because of the o.j. thing that's actually i think that's a bit premature but this is definitely not a good sign for a t.n.c. they can and they will fight this and they will go to court now the funny thing is the united states is now the plaintiff in a lawsuit and so they'll be suing to block this deal and he can defend against that but he has an uphill battle here and i wouldn't say it's dead but it certainly is a big blow to them i think the interesting thing is eighteen and he's saying we didn't expect this and that made that basically send a signal that e.j. was not negotiating with a t. and t. here this was kind of in their mind a very open and shut case at some point and they decided to block to sue rather than negotiating with agency and what a mobile one of the more cynical. commentaries that i read today on this there are a few in this day and age there's no shortage of these right and on all sides an allusion is was the both the f.c.c. and d.o.j. work for the white house you know the executive branch is charged with right execute the laws created by congress and this is an election year and president obama needs a billion dollars and these companies are big and they made big campaign donations
9:36 pm
either for you or against you might there be an element of politics in this and is it possible the white house could scuttle this deal unfortunately there is no i'm not politics we think however in this case the facts i want to go over politics d.o.j. it's not really cynical to say they work for the white house they do the criminal justice as it is the executive branch agency the f.c.c. is an independent agency although they do have some discussions with the white house but they are not supposed to coordinate with the white house eighteen he is trying to make this about politics they have spent tons of money on capitol hill as they always do both in campaign contributions and in lobbying expenditures trying to get people who don't really have a final say here members of congress for example to say this might be a good deal we've seen some members of congress take the bait on that but fortunately most of them have not weighed in and now we think that what the pardon of justice and this is and the competitive of those members of congress and state governors and those who have kind of dip their toe in the water about the benefits of this deal should be much more skeptical and say wait a minute you know we can now see that the emperor has no clothes hair and that this eighteen t.d.o. is bad for america we have just
9:37 pm
a middle of this morning and i started my day in las vegas ok and in the airport lounge watching the t.v. there was that you know about all the wonders of communication and then the doctors and so and usually there tagged with this and one murdered t. mobile everything so we wonderful and that little tag was missing and i didn't know about the story at that point in time and i thought let's where did they get you did they get through is eighteenth you going to give up on this and this is the p.r. battle here i don't think so perhaps at some point they'll give up but right now they're promising to fight we have every reason to believe that the reason i'm so confident this will be blocked is that the o.j. has the facts on their side and they're going to pursue this as well and they won't drop it he will fight this. but that doesn't mean that it's empty and the big money will win even though it too often doesn't that sound very to it way too often now thanks for dropping by thanks and for filling us in on everything from the clayton act to the details of this it's much appreciated and he found this is an encouraging move by the department of justice let's just hope that they keep it up and go after emerging monopolies all over and all the various marketplaces all over
9:38 pm
the united states. is the good the bad the very very pro drawable they are the good old hannah actress an environmental activist was among the more than one hundred people who were arrested during the ongoing protest against the unbuilt x x all the oil pipeline in for the white house yesterday tar sands action organizing the protest which is now in its second week says the keystone pipeline is one of the most important environmental decisions that confronts the president right now and i told reporters before joining the protests yesterday that americans need to take a stand against environmental destruction that the pipeline will cause i think that it's time for all of us to step out of our comfort zone and become these sort of you know courageous thinkers that are willing to air bodies on the line and it's an incredible tradition and heritage that we have in the united states is affecting
9:39 pm
social change through you know brave action well said and our hats off to the activists who are back out there today continuing the protests at the white house one hundred eleven more people were arrested this after. the bad ryan killed me so what do you do what do you have to wear when you have a war criminal on your couch you lavish praise on at least that's what you do if you're a fox so-called news talking head like bill made. former vice president war criminal dick cheney's stop by fox and friends this morning to promote to promote his new book which he admits to being a war criminal so he's proud of it. and this is how kilometers sponsor. dick cheney vice president states mr vice president you haven't here on the calculus could be here to have a. credible credible job on this book by the way you could very comprehensive good career that might if you consolidate a sitting american history unplanned but we. had a great career ruining the united states and committing war crimes i suppose next
9:40 pm
we could offer you will stuff i fox and friends and kilmeade will kiss his boots and a very very ugly really big coloring books the company just published a new coloring book entitled we shall never forget nine eleven the kids book of freedom that allows children to color in most some of the most grisly images of nine eleven minutes after an aftermath from the burning world trade center towers for the navy seal operation to kill osama bin was a besides the inappropriate theme of the book it also peddles islamophobia to kids as nearly every reference to muslims in the book is accompanied by a reference to how they are terrorists the book's publisher wayne bell defended his creation by saying i'm sure there's the troth it's unfortunate that they were all moslems i don't know what else you can call i guess the purveyors of fear in america i think it's never too early to encourage kids to get books on as long before and that's a very very. i mean of the people who work on the frontline of our nation's
9:41 pm
hospitals are joining in the fight against congress and the result of the middle class i'll speak with one of the organizers of the national nurses united after the break. drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to put it through a bit through who can you trust no one who is you know view with the local machinery see where we had a state controlled capitalism it's called sasha's when nobody dares to ask. we do our t. question morning. america's nurses are now leading the campaign to make wall street pay for its destructive behavior beginning tomorrow thousands of nurses from all across the
9:42 pm
nation will converge on congressional offices to demand that lawmakers drop their obsession with spending cuts targeting working class families and instead take on wall street with higher taxes the organization national nurses united is sponsoring they did demonstrations tomorrow they released this video to promote their campaign .
9:43 pm
joining me now to talk more about this campaign is current begins a registered nurse and co-president national nurses united karen welcome thank you very much afraid to be here great to have an hour and on the set with me my one of my daughters in our own excellence who think here it's a fine thing. let's see wall street nurses. are you concerned the market's been swinging up or down a lot. maybe there's going to be part of the actual wall streeters of you know what's the connection here with a certain i know everybody kind of looks at this and thinks what is the connection i think the connection is because of who we are what we do for a living we take care of patients we take care of patients families we take care of our own families we take care of our communities and when you watch what has been going on in this country and the fact that you are watching the outcome and it is people do not have health care people do not have homes people are homeless people are living in now food banks if not in shelters all of this we see this in the end the end product is people come in sick or people are dying because they're not
9:44 pm
getting the health care they need they're looking at they're struggling and they're not able to pay co-pays and they're not able to pay deductibles so they're not required getting the care that being if they're not going for procedures which means when we see them things that could have been preventable are not preventable and we finally said you know it's time instead of looking at cutting programs that basically support people in a time when they're desperately in need of help we need to look at someplace else and one of the strip places we need to look at is wall street and the fact that they're the ones that cause this we can't keep pointing a finger at each other we need to point in the place where it really started and it is wall street and looking at it came clear that you know it with a small tax to wall street we could basically be putting as much as three hundred fifty million billion dollars back into programs to support the american people when we get people back on their feet and provide jobs you know you're one of the few groups is telling the truth on this it's really and truly is astounding kevin phillips the go back in the sixty's or early seventy's or at the emerging
9:45 pm
republican majority all the republicans loved him he predicted the rebellions lloyd etc. wrote several books most recently was bad money about how we have gone from financial services in america being basically a nice boring business and our people buy houses and finance cars. it made a nice predictable little two percent bankers were banking hours to have a home in the suburbs and that was it was very boring too thirty four percent of all the profits in america last year for american industry i mean that's that's what it used to be manufacturing you know may have actually gone to a lot of. it they have because they're continuing to what was one of the ways that they were so this was super high frequency trading zillion trades a second by computers and if you put just a tenth of a penny tax on each one of those things that's like throwing sand in those gears is that the kind of thing you talk about doing well actually you would be looked at as we're not this is not a new thing this is not something we did this come from this forty other countries that are also doing this great britain have to use transit accident taxes. great
9:46 pm
britain has there's other countries that have it in now we're looking at germany and france the european countries and now looking at this very closely as well it is a very minuscule when you think of the trading that is done in the money that exchanged hands it's point five percent would be just you know even they're looking at they calculated again it would be somewhere around three hundred fifty billion dollars put back every year into our economy to be able to help keep these programs going get people back to work help with housing help with those that are you know have no jobs have no health care and support all these things how can this be wrong you know again this makes absolute perfect we supported the wall street back up and running it's now time for wall street to get the russian people out here and this is exactly what peace will return a trillion dollars when it's time to pay back. the details of this exactly what you what are you all planning tomorrow the coming days well tomorrow is going to be a great day and we call it a day of action basically what we're doing is we're visiting sixty representatives
9:47 pm
across this country in twenty different locations from california massachusetts chicago and a multitude of other places and we're actually going to go to their office and ask them to please to sign onto a plane to support a tax on wall street. for transactions and we feel this is the beginning this is actually something that is really a mistake of taking away services and taking away more from people that are desperately in need that we are actually looking at you know getting money that is not going to last anyway so that is. it was this two places you can look at one of them is that it's national nurses united org and one on the screen right great and then there is another one which i believe is we have called the main street campaign and i believe that is the other one that's up and running and even one of those places and we would love we have it's just not nurses we have a lot of other groups that are joining us tomorrow as well because this isn't just in d.c. years of having no you know it's all over the country and now i'm in our city
9:48 pm
houses mostly he says operational it was international offices in their home towns where they're supposed to be taking care of those communities and this is how we roll up in this phone call that's exactly we would greatly appreciate it karen thanks so much for you very much and thanks so much for your activism it's powerful and great work a great thanks we appreciate it joining there as is tomorrow and show up at your member of congress his office and demand that wall street foot the bill for the destruction but they caused. this handsome man is senator charles grassley also known as chuck grassley and this is a video of senator chuck grassley a lot through his teeth to his constituents yesterday.
9:49 pm
that's right when pressed by constituents about his party's plan to privatized social security and handed over to the wall street banks toure's grassley brushed it aside and said he only knows a one member just wanna lose cannon who he won't name who wants to privatize social security he doesn't want to name names because he's that one guy back in two thousand and five as chairman of the senate finance committee grassley spearheaded an effort to privatizing social security two thousand and five new york times article documented grassley efforts writing grassley chairman of the senate panel responsible for social security supports private social security accounts grassley told reporters he would push for the private accounts even if a majority of the public does not appear behind the idea and approach george w.
9:50 pm
bush who is president of the time support a grassroots efforts and later complained the failure of privatizing social security was one of the biggest regrets of his office and six years later chuck grassley doesn't want to fess up to it but that is. but you know his constituents know that he was hustling the plan to sell off social security to wall street but you know you say oh there's one in oh no grassley isn't the only one as they think progress report on coverage one hundred eighteen other republican members of congress have like grassley gone on the record with their support of privatizing social security either through votes they've taken or statements they've made so when grassley said he knows of only one member who wants to privatizing social security he was either line forgetful or simply off by one hundred seventeen people but grassley is clumsy lies speaks to
9:51 pm
a bigger picture here and that bigger picture is republicans are at it again. since coming out big in the making to midterm elections last year republicans took the gamble that they could destroy everything our nation has accomplished over the last century from the new deal programs like the minimum wage unemployment insurance and social security and the great society programs of medicare food assistance for hungry children and. it's what bankers on wall street have been spending hundreds of millions of dollars on for years by and politicians like there's no tomorrow so those politicians will hand over social security and these other programs to them so the banks there's kaminski billions off the top in profits but this is the first time social security has been under siege were started in one nine hundred thirty five when you know when social security was first passed and republicans argued that the programs are in the united states of the soviet union luckily the american people ignore the republican surtax scare tactics that and by the time republican
9:52 pm
blight eisenhower was president in one nine hundred fifty s. even he knew that those who wanted to get rid of social security were in his words stupid and he wrote in one thousand fifty four a letter to his brother should any political party attempt to abolish social security unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs you would not hear that party a good in our political history there is a tiny splinter group of course the bullies you do these things if you are the texas oil millionaires and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas the number is negligible and they are stupid. unfortunately this stupid's have returned today and if the enemies of social security many of whom rely on wall street to fund their campaigns swept into office last year yelling and screaming about how social security is going bankrupt which is not by the way as the economic folly as a policy is to point out if you just raise the cap and make millionaires and billionaires contribute as. the same way working stiffs do then the program will be
9:53 pm
solvent for ever in other words it's another republican scare tactic and the american people are not buying in a matter how far how hard news bush's republicans missed read the two thousand and ten election voters were not endorsing the radical right wing agenda of privatized social security they were just duped into kicking all the democrats out of office thanks to more than three hundred million dollars in secret corporate cash thanks to the supreme court's citizens united decision that flooded network cable and local t.v. with lies and half truths but these poor republicans thought that because the banks there's an oligarchy could fool people t.v. ads the lied about the democratic opponents and this got elected but those same americans could also be fooled with lies about social security they even had the coneys or the stupidity to vote nearly unanimously to support the paul ryan budget
9:54 pm
which privatizing medicare i'm guessing the average republican congressman didn't graduate the top half of this class but he sure knows how to make money from rich people to screw retired people young people in our schools and those poor areas are baffled about why the voters who didn't ask for these radical reforms reforms which are well underway in town halls all across america why they're getting these kind of responses. yes. that's right. ok back at work and well yes. right we were you know what. the push for the. you want to take the publicly administered programs such as medicare and turn it over to a private corporation tell me how my gramma's going to benefit from that to keep
9:55 pm
sitting here on. the. right. now their job is up other republicans are trying to figure out a way to avoid this backlash public and senator john thune is biting the bullet in admitting his own party is wrong he told a local newspaper that the main message he received from his town meeting was don't cut my social security and medicare but most other republicans aren't ready to admit they're wrong and instead they resorted to ignoring their constituents like the fifty one percent of republicans who chose not to hold town hall meetings and all this month and just avoid their constituents altogether or others who are holding closed door corporate funded town hall meetings that charge constituents forty bucks to ask a prescreened softball question that's what congressman paul ryan and ben quayle among others are have been doing and then there's guys like congressman dan webster
9:56 pm
of florida who are resorting to creating wanted posters with pictures and personal details of people who dared to ask them about things like privatizing medicare and then passed out those wanted posters to other town hall attendees basically saying you know if you ask a question like that that i don't like you'll end up on the next poster and then there's people like chuck grassley who choose just a lot of their constituents. ever privatized social security when he's been working to do that for almost a decade either way republicans are desperately trying to hide the truth about their plans to radically mate remake america by turning our commons and social safety net over to the bankers on wall street and the oil. and we can't let them get away with it so it's time to force those republicans who are hiding under their desks to listen and means showing up at your congressman's district office call son of letters letters of the editor to the local newspaper or email us talk about them on a lot of blogs get the message out that these right wingers want to undo the last hundred
