church is. that they could be together and share in the grief well we had the opportunity to speak to some of the people as to their recollections and memories of the people on this team and here is their grief in their words. we didn't fancy many. childhood went to. it's like losing a family member. i knew one of the players he was my neighbor and he was a great person he's got two little kids left how could this happen when we saw the news on t.v. i just burst into tears i still can't grasp how it could happen there used to be a team and no there isn't. what it was that it hurt so much. they were everything to us we'll remember them forever. i wish they were life.
9:04 am
and a few anecdotes to share with you about this tragedy that aren't actually related to the incident at all but one of them one of the wife of the coaches was on her way back from vacation when she learned that her husband was in this accident and was asked to come and identify the body at the morgue in that case on her way to the morgue she got into a minor car accident she is ok but also a mother of one of the players upon learning the news we are told suffered a heart attack as well after hearing that her son who was involved in this incident another story that we're told is a flight attendant twenty nine years old on this flight was married just three months ago and had told her friends and family that she was planning to retire from this business so that she could raise a family and have children and of course the people here are going to be gathering up for the next few days sharing their stories sharing their community spirit so

that they begin the healing process after such a national tragedy a wednesday's plane crash happened on the first day of the new season of the kontinental hockey league and many of those who perished playing for their countries and were real stars of the sport our sports presenter kate parters joins me now for more in the studio and ok this is a great tragedy in itself and certainly a shock to the sporting world what reaction have you been getting so far we've had reaction as unsurprising because we were listening to some of the early across there in the sports bulletin and some of the players that were in the n.h.l. as well as they were describing ice hockey as a family so many of the the team members came from other countries we have ten different nationalities in the aristotle side so the reaction is globally starts we hear from the fans and also from the highest in the lowest and the greats in the goods and we can also hear from players themselves and they say action used to play for. and we can hear from him.

country and my friends going to play. years ago or because. i just want to give my condolences to. stuff for everybody. around me with the scary. i'm speechless. on as well also there are some sort of a gun show who plays the also a center so sorry the idea that you get from the n.h.l. everybody coming together in shock and grief this is one whole team an entire generation of players essentially any use on the future of. building it well the example that's been used is the practical example that we have which is that which was a football example of a team that was rich it's seen as national spec a stone that was originally part of the soviet union and they were commissioned in one thousand nine hundred ninety the top flight they go on ironically it's
9:07 am
tragically ironically also to simmons to play down the minutes and walk whilst they were on a plane that collided in midair and seventeen players and coaches were killed and the the theory the practice they had afterwards was that the league then sent a player from every team to make up a new team the idea being that growth and something new something good that could come from this and this is a suggestion that's been made by commentators to cross russia and also the great in the good are all in favor of boosting this team and we can hear from some of the legends of the sport they're also right jaroslava with this idea. the icehockey family mourns the loss of one of the best teams it was a multinational t. with a unique group of players and the international sports community sharing our grief it was nonstandard team and our priority will be to build and you lock motif. it's huge tragedy for the. big international are different.
9:08 am
not only great hardship players. this is the people. know this not only an argument with some of those who support it you know the same services for. keeping my answers. there are people on this who support the team so. they're professional or could see. that no one team can be and i'm successful with a dozen or so of calls actually. five calls so i was a boy as we try to do the move along from what you believe it will be so if you're a new head coach and nobody over there was a decided ways i was still of so also as a manager so in those of the clubs given the course as it is it really gave the best players. the local would you feel it was
9:09 am
a history of. what gets your vote stopped. well as we had one example means that if the head of the k h l nobody even needs to be told people are actually volunteering to come forward and help we're building in the team and they have as i hear already a announced new coach the former used to be obvious coming into the head of a new team well despite the tragedy as we often see in sports is a lot of unity so it's good to see that a process has already started thanks very much for that perspective kate from the sporting side. well that dimitri medvedev has visited the crash site been laid flowers in tribute to the victims of the plane disaster in and out the site the russian president said the number of allies must be reduced dramatically he also ordered the transport ministry to pay special attention to pilot training and russia's civil aviation sector saying that those not up to the job must be sacked and that have added that the entire industry must undergo serious changes. president medvedev altered his plans for the international policy for to visit the

site of the crash but later arrived to address the global gathering. point the tragedy here in the global policy for continued for a second day where the world's most pressing issues were discussed the president gave a keynote speech join me and he said now wait for more. and a decade since nine eleven we begin our special coverage of the anniversary commemorating the tragedy of the world that's coming up shortly. now the british government faces court action from a group of doctors over the death of weapons expert david kelly in two thousand and three they're pushing for a new inquiry after the first reached a verdict of suicide well kelly was behind a report showing that britain knew there were no weapons of mass destruction in iraq before joining the invasion. but found out that the evidence in the case isn't as clear as previously thought. more than eight years since the death of u.n.

weapons inspector dr david kelly and still no inquest following his own mosque as the source of a report saying tony blair's government knew iraq had no weapons of mass destruction before person invaded the country kelly was found dead in woods near his home a verdict of suicide was recorded despite what many see as conflicting evidence no one's ever said questions under oath about kelly's death and all medical and scientific reports relating to it were secretly classified something which has never been legally explained but it hasn't gone away this week talked to david how pain is demanding that the question of holding an inquest be reopened he's challenging a decision by attorney general dominic grieve who ruled out holding a coroner's inquest in june citing what he called overwhelming evidence that the u.n. weapons inspector committed suicide but david help him and

a group of other doctors are distinctly underwhelmed by the evidence. cross. your mind. the police. will leave you start to become pain has popular support reaches of the daily mail newspaper have to native around fifty six thousand dollars in just a week to help finance the appeal how pain and his fellow campaigners hope this will lead to a full inquest into kelly's death many suspect foul play just subsequent governments cover up. that was laura reporting that palestinians have started a campaign for statehood ahead of the september twentieth vote in the united nations they carried a letter to the local u.n. mission in ramallah saying their peaceful demonstrations will continue until palestine becomes a member state. that's our policy your reports the whole region is in the state of
9:13 am
build up to the vote. well the palestinian authority officially launched its campaign for statehood today thursday and in a formal letter to the un secretary chief banki moon it urged the international body to recognize tellus fenians just demands and what we understand is that the campaign will involve a series of events in the run up to the opening session of the un general assembly on september the twentieth it has been dubbed the national campaign for palestine state one hundred and ninety four and to launch its one hundred palestinian high ranking officials and activists gathered today for is day at the u.n. headquarters in ramallah for a short ceremony now both the israeli government as well as the obama administration is against the stick aeration and the u.s. has sent a formal request to the palestinian president mahmoud abbas asking him not to go ahead with it but a bus has rejected as we are hearing some rumblings behind the scenes that israelis
9:14 am
and palestinians have been meeting informally and in secret to discuss the possibility of possibly postponing this declaration that we have no confirmation of this what we've witnessed here particularly in the last two months is a build up of anger frustration and discontent within the israeli public particularly leveled at the mid-town yahoo government these have been the largest protests in this country's history and just yesterday protesters clashed here in tel aviv with police a number of arrests were held people accuse the police of treating them brutally and all of this was because the government has started removing tents from the streets of several cities despite the fact that earlier it said it would give protesters and till the end of the month to clean up their act and to meet the government in small ways and in boardrooms for discussions rather than on the streets so what protesters are saying here is that they really cannot trust the government and there's also the concern that as the government turns its attention to what is happening externally these of the. september the twentieth it will no
9:15 am
longer even listen to the concerns being addressed here within the israeli society now a russian pilot who was convicted of drug smuggling earlier this year has been sentenced to twenty years in prison by a us court wasn't in yet a shekel was detained in liberia in two thousand and ten and transported to the us but moscow says his arrest and rendition were illegal and will seek his repatriation artes an associate sure can explain this case builds a major precedent this is the first time when a russian citizen is sentenced to an american prison for an intent to participate in a crime in a case that was built by special agents posing as drug dealers arrested in a third country in this case liberia now you will be edge eligible for parole in as much as thirty years we know that his defense team has thirty dale's days to file an appeal but u.s. officials can take as much as two years to consider this appeal now the man has repeatedly pled not guilty in this case hopeful him till the last minute himself
9:16 am
and his family his mother and wife who are here to support him broke out in tears in the courtroom today as the sentence was announced i'm not going to insist we have nothing to hope for believe him to die and who the judge would be reasonable upright and not thrown and he just well you think it's cruel but i send him to twenty years behind bars do you really think and you may help in this case it was a family man with no criminal background he has never stood trial anywhere in the world including russia and the united states moreover he has never even stepped foot on u.s. soil up until he was snatched up by u.s. special agents in liberia last year and brought here to stand trial now his family as well as russian officials were not informed as to what his whereabouts affectively considering him missing russian officials cited a breach of diplomatic conduct a breach of international law because they did not know where this citizen was and
9:17 am
because the u.s. state department failed to do only inform them. the tragic jet crash in the us level has overshadowed a major political event taking place in the city and change plans including those of president medvedev while speaking out the second and final day of the global policy for you touched upon the major challenges russia is facing but artie's and he said now is there for us. almost certainly a lot of debate and discussion took place at this two day forum just by the tragedy nevertheless the president felt it was the right thing to do to begin his keynote speech with a moment of silence by. our citizens were killed in the crash as well as citizens of several other countries let's observe and then it of silence to honor their memory but you buy me. the president went on to give his speech it focused on multiculturalism of course
9:18 am
that's the theme of this year's forum here in jaroslav he spoke a lot about the briefs in society as snake income winds and how that can lead to problems in society and about how russia needs to take a steady growth towards modernization another theme that has come up very much so apt is today form is of course the situation in the mideast and north africa especially concerning libya and syria and in fact joining me now to speak more about that and who better to know about the situation there is the presidential envoy to africa thank you very much for joining us one of our themes that we hear often from the president is even russia in general especially over the past couple of years that you can too much other countries have the kind of times that you have the idea that the president is meeting today spoke about it of course is in reference to people that just because someone doesn't do something we think it's redundant means he was referring to libya how do you when you're working for nato they found teaching countries to have to marcus these they will consider other by
9:19 am
you know for me personally it's more difficult to defend the thesis because there's only one bad thing about democracy we cannot impose it's really difficult to impose new democracy should groups within the society and very often the society is in the part of the world which we're told. a ball to have to some home or denies themselves from medieval ages style structure and medieval ages style mentality so i think that it's really very difficult just to bring blueprints from any western or eastern capital to this part of the world and say hey this is the way you have to do it. just finally i want to talk about syria do you think that it will turn into another libya i hope not i hope not that's why russia is working hard in order to build bridges between the government and the
9:20 am
opposition on the ninth of september will be receiving again the delegation of the syrian opposition we shall be receiving the representatives of the syrian government on the eleventh of the twelfth of september we'll be working hard in order to help the syrians to create a kind of docking mechanism between two camps which are fighting against each other and this fighting does not serve the national interests of syria thank you very much thoughts there at the front mikail markel of the presidential envoy to africa and of course over the today for a pretty much the main theme when it comes to security what's happening there that debate of course will continue but a lot of work done here at the global policy forum in. now in just a few days the united states will be marking its greatest tragedy in half a century the terrorist attacks all september eleventh two thousand and one but what followed was a decade of invasions torture scandals and untold abuses on both sides as we begin
9:21 am
our special coverage of the anniversary our is going to check on takes a look at whether the past decades made america any safer i am going to be one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in history i'm sure that in a decade of anti terror campaigns across the globe. but is america and the world now a safer place ten years on the most recent nine eleven commission report card gives aviation security in the u.s. the worst rate and after as for terrorists experts say the methods used to fight them have spawned even more extremism torture and if that which warm just get off the grid or going to look for thank you is a high focal on a curtain call uter and that have significant we think it's back on whether they're trying to defeat terrorism following nine eleven america did not just go after the perpetrators it unleashed a campaign on
9:22 am
a nation that had nothing to do with the attack hundreds of thousands of iraqi civilians have died since the u.s. invasion in two thousand and three america's there a long campaign on terror has created a new phenomena more without borders and as many say without rules torture rape and murder that took place at the u.s. run prison in abu ghraib iraq as well as other u.s. prisons overseas brought global condemnation but key decision makers in the bush administration say what they did was in the best interest of their country and they would do the same again people call it torture new think it should still be a tool yes rendition yes secret prisons yes wiretapping well with the right to prove colonel lawrence wilkerson. collin powell is chief of staff when he was the secretary of state under george w. bush he says some of the bush administration members deserve to be put on trial and he would be ready to testify george tenet told dick cheney what dick cheney wanted
9:23 am
to hear oh yes it's working mr vice president we're getting great information and we're stopping terrorist attacks that is order book the fact that there hasn't been a terrorist attack on the scale of nine eleven on the u.s. soil is often attributed to the harsh methods used in the last decade of a war on terror but counterterrorism experts say the fact that terrorists are successfully recruiting thousands of new members these days does not add to security in the u.s. and the whole world for that matter we've also seen other extremist networks like network swelling in response to things like u.s. drone attacks and off the field. so in some ways there's often been a diversification of recruits and the other extreme organization in pakistan u.s. drone strikes have killed thousands of civilians and made it only a handful of actual terrorists many of the victims' loved ones seek revenge by joining radical groups others like this young man who lost both of his legs and
9:24 am
three family members in a drone strike gether in protest asking when will the killing stop but experts say those pleas mean nothing when washington needs the chase to go on we have made a cottage industry if not a much more than a cottage industry out of the what my former boss colin powell has called the terrorist industrial complex lots of people are making lots of money off of this so-called global war on terror our war on terror. begins with al qaida. but it does not in there listening to george bush's declaration of war on terror from ten years ago one is left wondering whether it was the beginning of a vicious circle where the revenge would take more innocent lives and would start a new wave of terror i'm going to check out reporting from washington r.t. . and tomorrow we'll assess the effects of a post nine eleven world both on the us and on those in afghanistan where many
