just after six pm here in the russian capital this is r t a fighting continues in libya as rebel forces prepare to storm two of the remaining strongholds held by program off the forces loyalists holed up in the towns of sart and buddy while the have been given until saturday to surrender however they have vowed to resist despite the deadline and colonel gadhafi himself you're released an audio message claiming he hasn't fled and will never free his homeland despite reports that his supporters of crossed the border into neighboring niger the country's capital tripoli fell to rebels last month but there's no sign of life improving there as are his body if a national reports there's just as much fear in the streets as there is the joy of victory. a city celebrates more than ten days than even capital has been rejoicing in the dictator's fall. he wanted to bring his quarter here in the central square for his rule for the second

anniversary we report our flag and stand we one we're so happy without him. it seems in the last two weeks rebel fighters have fired bullets into the air they were shocked to hear in this small town tripoli earlier in august. or libya phenol very relieved with. this. call it is good duffy's told me he told me all day be would love me would that be the law that we know you would see him and of course right up with them is that we don't really get that big and we're done all right with them on their care but away from jubilant crowds we meet those who are not so pleased up to the one leaves in tripoli is obviously district historically pro khadafi when the rebels arrived his sister was badly injured she's still in hospital in tunisia i'm going to have one doesn't want to show his face on camera. and ceased when i had no location for the interview he says revolution has

brought much fear in its wake. there is no peace there is no safety in the city we don't let our children outside when it's dark we are afraid we always wait for something bad when gadhafi was here at least we didn't have to sleep awake what we do know. up the little man says he also want to change and the brighter future for his country but they sway. people are dying on both sides the city is destroyed and no one cares do they seriously think that they changed it for the better don't want you so just look around is that what you wanted and what is around is a scene of widespread destruction and social chaos the badly damaged buildings matched by the rise in stink of garbage and decomposing bodies youngsters roam the streets barely old enough to understand that what they carry are weapons not toys

many shops schools and hospitals are closed while the city's symmetries are growing bigger and bigger. shortly after tripoli fell into rebel hands the national transitional council libya's new authority claimed it was moving here from benghazi but weeks have passed and there is still no sign of its presence on the ground zero of all being raced towards the city functioning by itself and treading a fine line between freedom and anik a. rich notion of. tripoli libya. and still ahead for you this hour another gathering in the same old place crowds we want to spare in cairo already anger at their new leaders. and of president obama unveils his half a trillion dollar jobs act accompanied by stern warnings that there's no time left

for political bickering. russia will send a fact finding mission to syria to get firsthand information on the situation there the decision was announced by the country's presidential envoy to africa they want to get all following this meeting with a delegation of syrian opposition leaders in moscow or they blame president bashar al assad for the political dead. walk in syria say he's making the same fatal mistakes as the livest embattled leader colonel gadhafi moscow however promises to do what's best to avert a libyan scenario in syria telling both sides of the conflict that it's time to move from the battlefield to the negotiating table president get made this position clear in this latest interview artie's peter all of our sums up the main points. president medvedev has warned against viewing the situation in syria in terms of good and seeing this careful consideration must be paid to certain elements within the syrian opposition before the international community. dealing with them now
10:06 am
president medvedev also called on both the assad government and the opposition to bring about an end to violence in the country with. the resolutions we would approve to send a strong message to the syrian regime should in fact be addressed to both sides things aren't just black and white they're the antigovernment protesters in syria are not followers of some refined european models of democracy some of them are to put it straight extremists and some might even be called terrorists the situation is not that simple and we have to take into account the balance of different forces and interests russia may support certain moves but only if they don't boil down to the one sided condemnation of the government and president assad we should send a strong message calling on all the conflicting parties to come to the negotiating table start talks and stop the bloodshed. russia has opposed the sanctions that have been put in place on syria including the most recent ones imposing an oil embargo saying that more time should be given to the assad government to achieve
10:07 am
the promises made to bring about change in the country though president medvedev mentioned there that negotiation is important and russia is playing its part as a mediator on friday representatives of the. the syrian opposition are in moscow for talks with top russian diplomats on monday representatives from the assad government will be here to talk to diplomats to try and bring an end to this situation in syria russia of course doesn't want to go see syria go down the same road as what happened in libya with the u.n. resolution that was imposed there being all abused as far as russia. with the international intervention going well beyond the parameters laid out in the mandate they want to see negotiation bring a peace to syria. well to hear president of the interview for you can log on to our website dot com and there you can also find more opinion and the timeline of the syrian uprising. well it was an event that stunned the world and even

a decade on it still leaves few people on the move the repercussions of nine eleven are still being felt today in the form of the now allied war on terror and yet it seems for the majority of the people who bore the brunt of the world's fury of the aftermath of the attacks nine eleven is just another day this report now from afghanistan. helmand in southern afghanistan is the province that was borne the brunt of the fighting between the taliban and coalition forces. afghans in this war torn province think about nine eleven and its consequences. while on patrol with the marines i get a first opportunity to ask a couple of young afghan men what they know about nine eleven but those who will go to. war with us will be here. to see if you show them a few more and can us that they know where it is even if we don't know if that's because because your former neighbor heard about i need to support the world more
10:09 am
so coming. to young men and clearly never heard of nine eleven. but maybe the elders of the local sure would have more to say you know you see you. just can see the smoke from the buildings and that's what that's what you think you can see when you go sure that's a picture. so i think that was a call but if i just got here i would be surprised but having been here now for six months this is pretty much the stone ages where we are. what to do about every accident. so what the guy you said was kabul was never going to kabul just shows you how isolated they're even in their own country without understand. that you know you don't think you know you're going to america afghanistan come to this point and get the airplane from here to attack in the united states you know how to . i. thought it was nice to go from iraq to then here is a lot easier to understand you know why you're here and really at that picture you
10:10 am
go through the picture mind yourself it's your reaction to look at it in this practical where you form occurring right. if you back. what was the american saying we're going to help you to discern one funding and it is how many funding and this is going to help you where is the help but not write down what this is going to give it to our kids going into fighting and they do it to their own kids in a paper that i don't and. i do sympathize or understand what you're some were saying it's even just from the weather we had recently people losing their homes and nobody to help them so you know when you have when you can feed yourself the earth how yourself are you to care about somebody you know six thousand miles away . so i can understand that this is it was about you that i never thought to ask those questions of. anybody here that's why we're here amazingly in a country where for ten years a war has been for with nine eleven as its root cause and justification it turns out not only with the villages oblivious to nine eleven but still with the afghan
10:11 am
police and even some of the translators working with the u.s. military if you go that is so you know i have no idea what the syrians. for. a survey taken in twenty ten by the international council on security and development found that ninety two percent of afghan men in helmand and other afghan provinces had no idea what nine eleven was and with american troops said start with during this year it seems likely that they will leave afghanistan without the vast majority of afghans ever having really understood why they came in the first place had employed from afghanistan for i know all the talk more about the lasting legacy of nine eleven i'm joined live by peter hart from the national media watch they are based in new york thanks very much for being on a program ok so it's been a decade since the war on terror was born this was following the united. in attacks what do you think has been achieved i mean has international terrorism in fact been dealt a major blow. that's difficult to say i think what we've seen
10:12 am
in this country in the united states is a state of permanent war much of this is either media manufactured or media enabled first they're gonna stand in iraq and libya all of them are a part of i think a larger story that the media are telling and constantly telling that we are in this generational conflict with shadow we characters. a war without end even the iraq war which you know the u.s. media have celebrated as more or less ending is not ending the war in afghanistan is interesting that you caught it early on and a war actually i mean this has been going on for ten years i mean looking at the human cost and it's just keeps on dragging on do you think that america's military combat missions will be any different. i find it sort of doubtful in the piece that was just airing you see that people in afghanistan at least some people have no awareness of the purpose of this war if anything i think americans
10:13 am
and afghans share that the united states population has lost the plot on the afghan war and is mostly opposed to it but the political and media stablish means or deciding that this war must grind on in pursuit of some goal that seems loser you are very elusive at all but let's look at some interesting statistic i mean if you had heard this story had earlier over ninety percent of the afghan population had no idea what nine eleven is and why the u.s. even launched a war their home country i mean don't you think that people's lack of awareness that plays into the hands of the taliban extremists and why is that the u.s. trying to explain it to them. well i think the united states has made substantial efforts to do sort of conventional propaganda in afghanistan to explain the u.s. occupation in the war there it's not working obviously reaching a lot of people and i think you know we were less worried here about what taliban
10:14 am
propaganda can do this way or that way than with what the u.s. media establishment can do they have a difficult time convincing americans that the war makes sense at this point it makes perfect it's perfectly logical that afghans have no idea why american troops are there so i think if anything we share this kind of befuddlement the war must continue and must go on. we have a media system in this country that i think echoes an amplifies state power instead of questioning it and if we had i think serious reporting from afghanistan that talk to afghans people might feel some sympathy toward them and wonder what exactly the point of the war is right now the reporting as you mentioned of course you work for a media watchdog just very briefly because we're running out of time how do you think the media has changed since nine eleven. well i think they are the enablers of this state of permanent war whether it's iraq afghanistan libya the domestic war panics
10:15 am
about al-qaeda operatives selling bombs into their bellies they have built this this this state of fear and it shows no sign of dissipating all right thanks very much for your thoughts there peter hart from the national media watch from there in new york. now the world size talkee community remains it morning with a loss of almost the entire look a motive team after their plane crashed on wednesday forty three people died when the ak forty two crashed on takeoff near the russian city of yes level people also gathered in prague to remember three czech nationals who were among the many top players killed hundreds have been lee flowers their names and lighting candles in their memory top check ice hockey official and former national. well says the loss is a whole. page hard even to talk about we've lost players in their prime they were the hard core of the national team i knew them very well even though they were playing abroad still they were always trying to get better they cared they didn't just want
10:16 am
to be part of a system they wanted to know the details of their positions and how to best score they took a huge interest in what they did and i really enjoyed working with them. people also gathered in slovakia to remember the former national team captain public there was a died in the crash hundreds of can also build that in his memory i think that's what the stadium bubbles' friends say the thirty six year old was planning to quit hockey so to spend more time with his family. i worked in your islam the best done of my career that base past spring i flew with all those people by the same plane it is a huge shock for the team and also for this city pavel was a great person and a great hockey player he was a legend of slow mike ice hockey sometime in february or may next year i would still trying to convince him to return back to the national team should look at it i still cannot believe it i knew pavel who years everybody will miss him he was
10:17 am
a great person a great player a great team leader recently was said goodbye to him as a national team leader now we're saying goodbye to him as a great person. while the burns to ninety percent of his body the only surviving that collective player on that plane that exceed that is going to have all made conscious after the question insisted on seeing his relatives the player is still in intensive care where his condition is critical but there is also another player who did get on that plane after being told to stay behind by the coach at our web site r.t. dot com you can read about the full story of. this is very terrifying for me the hockey team is like a family i lost a family of forty people people i was close to for such a long time. and in a russian capital mincer the locomotive team was heading on that fateful flight a special commemoration ceremony has been held thousands of fans packed into the stadium to remember those who perished in wesley's disaster. we'll look into the
10:18 am
a preliminary results from the flight recorders of that tragic flight which are just the engines were intact at the time of the catastrophe well they're looking at to the some c.c.t.v. pictures capture the moment that a huge ball of smoke rises into the year as the plane burst into flames more details on our web page that's r t dot com. president barack obama has presented his much anticipated jobs act to congress then bush's program aims to reverse the country's troubling unemployment statistics and also calls for almost half a trillion dollars in funding and came with a blunt warning to republicans to stop the political circus and pass the measures for more reaction to his proposals i'm joy to live by investigative journalist david lindorff mr lindorff it gets very confusing sometimes and we're looking at so many different numbers of unemployment are under employment statistics in your opinion just how bad or how serious is the situation with jobs. well people talk about whether the united states is going to go back into a double dip recession and the reality is it is by any definition except some very
10:19 am
mechanistic economic terminology it's been a recession since really two thousand and seven unemployment is officially nine point one percent but it's more like twenty percent when you count the method that they used to use back in one nine hundred eighty that includes people who have left the labor force because they can't find work or people who are working at minimum wage part time. because they can't find full time work and it's very stark as i fear saying it's very serious and what is your reaction to the president and his job that plan unveiled yesterday will have a final resolve mass unemployment do you think not a chance the four hundred fifty billion dollars it's scarce the just a little over half of what the first stimulus package of seven hundred twenty five billion was and even that was too small most economists were saying we needed
10:20 am
a trillion dollars of stimulus to really have an impact back in two thousand and nine and we didn't get that and now this one is even less and the unemployment situation has gotten more ingrained and worse so this is really a drop in the bucket. assuming it all passed which is also an extremely if we given the republican control of the house yet if it is actually passed you're talking about we're talking about half a trillion dollars and america actually afford to gavel so much money on something that may or may not work. of course the united states can spend a whole lot more than net without any problem the the you know the us is nowhere near the in the kind of debt situation that say japan is in or you know greece or italy or anything like that the united states can borrow money basically short term a two percent that's what people are willing to pay to buy u.s. treasuries there's no issue the debt issue is really bogus it's something that
10:21 am
you'd have to deal with twenty years out during a recession and actually if they don't solve the unemployment problem the debt will increase because people aren't paying income taxes companies aren't paying corporate taxes because there's no profits so they pay taxes on so really the issue of the debt is a radiological one that republicans are raising but it's it's a false issue i have except that's calling for cooperation from the republican side and he said it six times in his speech do you think they'll come around for everything no no if they won't come around because for them the the advantage for republicans is to have a high unemployment rate going into the election their thinking is if there's high unemployment been people will blame it on the president when obama has to try to do and i don't think he's doing it effectively to convince the public that this issue of not dealing with the unemployment is the republicans fault. it really is in
10:22 am
a sense that he can't pass any real jobs bill because the house will block it so he's sort of over a barrel and he's got to do this difficult job of convincing people that it's not his fault i thank you very much i said david leonhardt investigative journalist thank you. meanwhile economic shuffles are also happening across the atlantic and greece has given bags and insurers an almost sixty countries until later today to decide whether they will accept that step exchange offer there's a started to cut the deal unless it gets at least ninety percent participation which would give the country a short cashflow relief efforts to further rescue greece took a hit after athens admitted it won't be able to me that's deficit reduction deadlines. turkey's vowed to sue israel in the international court over its blockade of gaza that's already cut all military and trade ties with television after it refused to apologize for killing nine turks last year they were part of
10:23 am
the humanitarian flotilla the tried to break through the blockade israel had him posted two thousand and seven after hamas came to power the palestinian authority the turkish prime minister promised that in future the navy will escort traveling to the gaza strip. now in egypt crowds are gathering again in cairo's tahrir square urging interim military rulers to accelerate democratic reforms and announce a concrete timeline for had over to civilian rule they're also demanding to put an end to military trials for civilians the so-called million about protests billed as correcting the path of revolution is likely to become one of the largest demonstrations since the february uprising the ruling military council said it would allow peaceful protests but it would not tolerate violence. but our goal for more on the situation by the president of the association of targeting us from london obvious herself nearly eight months has passed as president obama was out said but people are once again protesters are egyptians asking for too much too
10:24 am
soon. well it depends on how you look at the military has been in charge for the last two months that people are unhappy with the situation that they know this is. many of those who are demonstrating today and this is not by all by no means it's not all the egyptian. population it's only the liberal movement because the islamists and many others did not take. this demonstration principly you have suggested that the election about stopping the military cause dealing with civilian cases they won the changes to take place in terms of the gas deal with israel they want to get the israeli ambassador they want a timetable for moving into a civilian role so this all these demands are being voiced but in fact if one looks at the figures and the number and number of people and
10:25 am
a hundred square today's demonstration is not very large as we've seen many demonstrations because as i said it's only the liberal movement the islamists have not joined in the west people have not joined in on the basis that they are not really officially the brotherhood are not concerned about the you know in the election talk about the islamist groups and not joining do you think that there's a split now in egypt now there has been and there are a couple of months and the last two months there has been no i think the various political movements vying for a lot of the are trying to show who is bigger than the other i think this demonstration is as i said it's only the liberals not taking part in it couple of weeks ago when the islamists demonstration the liberals did not join in. it is accusing the other one of trying to show their power but in fact this
10:26 am
situation in egypt i think my. view of most analysts the islamists. are not what the election or because whatever election no it takes they will definitely get higher votes missed them the liberals this is a movement which has difficulty that sorry to interrupt there i just want to ask very very briefly if the men. terri rulers interim rulers right now don't give up power do you expect some such a development to happen well i think the demonstrations will continue i think the egyptian people will not accept the military continue to be in this five most of the military as everybody knows are the same old team of mubarak people who were handpicked by mubarak with the approval of the americans that americans would be happy for the military to stay there but i don't think the egyptian people without that and i thank you very much for your thoughts mr president of the association.
10:28 am
when one deals with war for us to realize that this tremendous amounts of damage that are done not just human damage but damage to the physical environment in which the battlefield takes place tremendous amounts of damage done by aerial bombs by napalm boy coming from the city whether it's our sonic booms or factory marine mammals or it's the burning oil field syria and iraq or egypt's destroyed coral reefs in the pacific for a landing purposes the list just goes on and on the geneva conventions of nineteen forty nine states that they are shall be taken in the war to protect involved against widespread long term and severe damage the united states although it is accepted almost all of the provisions of protocol one has taken exception to that.
10:30 am
you're watching r t and these are the headlines as livid rebels prepare to storm some of the last programme off the strongholds people in tripoli take no comfort from their new rulers as fears of anarchy drown out cries. as america's decade long war in afghanistan winds down and many of those punished for the atrocities of september eleventh two thousand and one are so i don't where or where or what nine eleven was. egyptians gather again in tahrir square this time demanding faster democratic reforms and a handover of power from the military to civilian protesters set to become the biggest since the uprising that toppled. moscow is not taking sides over syria saying there will be no peace through bloodshed and calls on both the rebels and the regime to lay down arms and turn to dialogue. well up next here on r t it's moscow out to stay with us.
