welcome this is r t it's now eight pm here in moscow my name's kevin zero in and first the stadium where russia's lokomotiv ice hockey team played their last game has been transformed into a venue of mourning in tears today more than one hundred thousand people attended the ceremony in memory of the team and all the others that set perished on board the yacht forty two in a crash last wednesday our correspondent sean thomas witnessed the city's grief. the tone inside the stadium where the locomotive players played their games is very somber and quiet as thousands of people from all over russia and the city come to say their last goodbyes as this three day mourning period comes to an end we've been hearing some of the personal stories of the players who lives were tragically
12:02 pm
cut short we know of one player who just before this flight had proposed to his girlfriend and was hoping to start a family we know of another player has declared that this was his final season and he wanted to give up hockey so that he could spend more time with his family of course losing his life on the way to his first game of his last season also a flight attendant twenty nine years old just got married three months ago and was planning to leave the aviation industry so that she could start a family of her own now as to the rebuilding of the team and the spirit of moving forward best a geisha is still going on right now as we speak but beyond that we have the opportunity to speak to players from former. locomotive teams who say that they will come back so that they can help rebuild this franchise and make it the championship team that it once was we also have the opportunity to talk to the next generation of players the people who hope to become professionals and this is what
12:03 pm
they had to say about moving forward from this tragedy. as a city continues to mourn one very dedicated group of young men have choosing to honor their heroes in a unique way by getting back on the ice with me you know that because i think we should go into the ice and believe the guys. of the story told us to win for them so. that the support for these players to see these special as it was from this barrier you know for the team and their state for the fans. it meant them on the part of some six of september they're trying. sessions before midnight become more confident and quite optimistic and determined all of them were in very high spirits for. one coach working with this news team was supposed to be on the floor and the back working now his thoughts are still strong for those affected by this tragic loss i think it sets hard hearted voter photo but than the families and

relatives of the soldiers so i just free spirit based on the. strength to. go on about my mom my granddaughter this for everybody and for the next generation of jaroslava locomotive hockey players it's not just about rebuilding the team for the future of the city it's also about getting back on the ice as a form of therapy to help them get through their grief. but also have a strong wish to reinvigorate going pop out when they use championship and dedicate a victory to my friends who died i was young and while this team practices and even younger group is ready to follow in their footsteps. some of them play if you don't mind you have to ask him he told us about them in ca one more you need to be made in the team only ever bought stock market cool i want to be need team that moonachie does excessive no committee is next to become scheduled to be tested for the county the county is going to come right diaz who. proving that even though
12:05 pm
they've gone from the ice to members of this ill fated locomotive team that will continue to be in the hearts and minds of the people of jaroslav and the nation for generations to come out. of the sean thomas. so how was a city robbed of its sports stars his families and loved ones who had to r.t. don't call for the latest updates from us about that investigators continue to rule out theories behind the deadly catastrophe as they continue trying to find out what went wrong for the latest plane the fuel was contaminated to learn more about the possible cause. as the crash at twelve website. security is being stepped up across the u.s. after a terror threat on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the september eleventh attacks american intelligence intercepted communications from an al qaeda operative in pakistan indicating plans for a vehicle bomb plot against new york city or washington but as it is more important
12:06 pm
reports next a decade on many u.s. citizens still feel vulnerable in their own country. ten years ago america was blocked by unprecedented terror. nearly three thousand innocent lives were lost in a post nine eleven world was born. our war on terror. begins with al qaida. but it does not in there. it will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found stopped and defeated washington's military reach began with the hunt for osama bin ladin america strikes back afghanistan is home to put bombs and missiles from the air in the sea then a preemptive pounding into iraq. in the decade that followed america's fight for
12:07 pm
freedom has been stained by torture secret detention and rendition human rights violations symbolized by landmarks like one tom obey grave and the bob graham airbase prison we had garnered the empathy not only of the world but the muslim world and if we had the courage to be vulnerable we would be far safer and more secure than we are today instead we drank deep from that very dark licks are of nationalism journalist in office chris hedges says america's terror unleashed throughout the middle east has opened a pandora's box of evil estimates are over a million iraqi dead since the invasion. you know hundreds and hundreds of civilians killed in pakistan thousands killed in afghanistan not to mention millions of people displaced in a refugee camp some in the terror that we have unleashed will not go on paid it is and it will strike us eventually however in
12:08 pm
a post nine eleven america citizens have been forced to compromise their. freedom in the name of security the past decade has paved the way for new state practices such as warrantless wiretapping intrusive airport screening and greater authority for law enforcement what some call a police state in the making as this national security state grows and as it becomes easier for the government to scrutinize big knives that's in all aspects of our lives i think of americans are deeply deeply worried about is the issue. is larger than just that specific isolated order is even easier that is all around us much to the right here at home from people in our own country. since nine eleven a rising tide of islamophobia has passed through this formerly tolerant nation
12:09 pm
according to the f.b.i. the four men intended to carry out their plan today dozens of muslim americans have been arrested and convicted in so-called f.b.i. for oil terror plots plots that were orchestrated and manufactured by government paid informants these cases have been created by the government and yet we're supposed to feel safer because criminals that would not have come up with the plot had not been brought to them on a platter by the u.s. government are now in jail and we have you know snowball the violence that's going on around the world only raise more hatred only raise more bad feelings only reinforced many narratives there and a violent narrative of american imperialism around the world and we think we've created more enemies than friends you know if we targeted communities rather than making them partners not only has it not made us any safer i think that it has undermined you know the very fabric of american society the fabric of a post nine eleven america that the united states has conducted an operation that
12:10 pm
killed osama bin laden the leader. still waging war in the name of the freedom americans again care to get the personal right but in the years that followed the military will say to. you. he turned. around the world the man behind nine eleven and me have been captured by international people and yet he delivered more not artsy. let's get some more thoughts about the ramifications of nine eleven shall we and talk to whole garden he's professor of international and comparative politics at the american university of paris thanks for being with us whole. looking back the wars in afghanistan and iraq were reported to listen to reporters and claimed more than a million lives by if that is true do you think was such a large number of victims justified in efforts to stop international terrorism over
12:11 pm
the past ten years well i assume it's based on the cost of war project which is a very comprehensive study or more like two hundred twenty thousand to two hundred fifty thousand dead but nevertheless that's about seventy three times the number of people that died on september eleventh so yes this is expanding and i would want to say that that includes six thousand brave young american soldiers who went out to fight these wars and several hundred thousand or applying for disability service because of their injuries or whatever how they got hurt in this conflict and as someone else said earlier there's at least seven million eight hundred thousand refugees created from these conflicts so so this is the way out of proportion in that sense to the horrors that did take place on american territory of course the economy say the u.s. has been fighting these wars that the absolutely can't afford i guess the counter-argument to that is you can't put
12:12 pm
a price on attempts to secure the world yeah well our you know the pentagon spent. you went up roughly to seven point six trillion cents cents then the wars themselves probably cost between two to three point three to two point seven trillion though once you put in all sorts of other calls disability. payment and other issues so this is really been a drain on the economy now the some ten or eleven attacks of course cost about forty billion in damages plus the three thousand lives and and some say as much as two trillion to the stock market but we just added on to that disaster with their own misconceived strategy of the war in iraq had nothing to do with al qaida and afghanistan the goal there seem to be more against the taliban than al qaida itself has been slipped through the cracks. and it's all i'm really thinking this whole strategy from the be george bush as was quoted earlier it's not just the war
12:13 pm
against al qaeda but all terrorism is really a disaster and i can't use a much stronger term that i could probably but i won't do that until close another side to this whole i mean it's absolutely true to say the u.s. hasn't seen a terror attack on its own in the past ten years but that same thing can be said about unit in the rest of the world do you think america's war on terror is actually have the effect to spread spreading terrorism all across the rest of the globe and so that containing it well of course one of the reasons why for example the murder madrid bombing in two thousand and four was the get spain out of the war in iraq and some other other reasons were involved in the madrid bombing which is quite quite devastating that's was one example the point is we can't get the big guy you look at the little guys so so you do that but the but i think the other effect is it's had affected every state can use the war on terror to its own purposes they look at the united states the united states did that then we can do that too and therefore it's opened a real pandora's box as well as one person's that earlier we don't know what to
12:14 pm
expect the rule of law. all of international law is certainly been undermined by american actions that of course in the past decade the very controversial putte trade act that we know to succeed in the war on terror the u.s. had to introduce it basically allowing the state to spy on its people yet is it justified do you think to give up one's privacy in order to feel safe errol was the state just used that as a pretext to gain more control that is an argument that some people say well it's a mix of the two i mean i had states and for a long time i lived in washington d.c. it was called the murder capital of the world for a while we had about five deaths there mostly drug related and that's another issue we've got a drug war of the border that's killed more people than iraq over the past few years so insecurity is still there i'm not so sure of the national the patriot act and everything is actually resolve that issue particular to the drug prices that we're involved in on the other hand sometimes you wonder if the border controls are
12:15 pm
more interested in bringing in. illegal plants and other things a rather than looking looking for terrorists and some people who have nothing to do with terrorism been stopped at the border and sent back home so so it's not clear to me that centralization you know the idea was to connect the f.b.i. the cia together which was opposed to after world war two the idea of linking the cia in the f.b.i. was opposed by president truman this linkage to me is not it's not clear that it's serving him with all the final final twenty seconds if a camera but at a time but i want to ask you what he think is the world changed for the better post nine eleven i'd like to say i'm afraid i have to say no war of terror killing bin ladden doesn't stop it killing a war didn't stop the communist movements during the cold war killing bin ladden will not stop it we have more we have to gauge and collective security and in southwest asia we have to find ways to reconcile the taliban and in the end the
12:16 pm
kabul government we have to worry. of india and pakistan to reconcile those those issues we have to work with egypt and israel that conflict is getting worse since postwar boruc we lose a lot of work it's going to be done in order to calm the situation down and really resolve these problems because they're not resolved thanks for your thoughtful gardner professor and chair of the department of international comparative politics that the american university in paris thank you very much who of course we want to know what you say as well what you think about this huge story log on to our web site to participate in latest poll today our question what does nine eleven mean for you now ten years on very many of us remember it for old enough for so far the most popular responses a convenient pretext to invade afghanistan and iraq the answer a conspiracy to rob americans of their freedoms comes a close second as you can see on the chart there some we are also telling us it's
12:17 pm
a tragedy the nation must learn to let go now and an enemy attack the u.s. will never allow to happen again it's always good to hear what you think on our channel r.t. dot com is the place where you can contribute. to a terrorist attack that became synonymous with. the senseless slaughter of almost street people stop. a vision of a new thing. ten years old to remember to. look back at nine eleven and see. egypt on high alert tonight after night arrives in cairo left at least three people dead and more than a thousand injured a demonstration for reform in the country quickly turned violent as protesters vented their anger against the israeli embassy raging mobs stormed the building with police slow to react eventually they did manage to push the rioters back with
12:18 pm
force paulus leader of mideast corresponds got the latest for you from tel aviv. israeli officials have condemned this in the act most terms the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying that it is simply unacceptable now israel has withdrawn all its embassy staff with the exception of one person that it's keeping in cairo in the hope that it can maintain some kind of diplomatic relations between both countries the egyptian prime minister has offered the resignation of both him and his cabinet to the highest military council and this is almost as a form of apology for the fact that the police stood by it for several hours while protesters stormed the embassy and the police simply did nothing this resignation has been rejected there were hundreds of protesters they smashed down the embassy board they have documents out of the window they say it to police vehicles and lie it they threw molotov cocktails at the police and into these waving flags now please people were killed we've been told hundreds if not thousands were injured
12:19 pm
many of them by the tear gas that the police were forced to use to disperse the crowd the u.s. defense secretary called cairo while all of this was happening and urged the police there to do something and for something to be done to protect the israeli embassy and it seems as if it was almost off of this phone call that the police intervened in the situation was eventually brought under control the incident was actually sparked by israel's refusal to apologize for killing five egyptian soldiers last month and that was in a cross border raid that is gold say it was a mistake but it hasn't gone the step of actually apologizing for those deaths all of this comes just months after the former egyptian president hosni mubarak was ousted here of course was a longtime friend of israel and this is why many here also suspecting that israel because of its traditional behavior is likely to react much strongly in the coming hours if not in the coming days but of course israel is in a delicate position because it needs all the frames that it can have particularly in light of the fact that it is just one week since the israeli ambassador was
12:20 pm
expelled from turkey all of this coming at a critical juncture for israel just days ahead of palestinians going to the united nations security council to call for a palestinian state. clashes have broken out during an anti austerity measure rally in greece is second largest city with riot police firing tear gas to disperse protesters a record number of police are on standby as authorities prepare for the largest protest the country's witnessed against the cuts thousands of people are gathering indeed in the northern city of thessaloniki for rallies as prime minister george papandreou is expected to deliver resign your speech about the state of the economy let's talk now to economics and expect as he's in athens for us next thanks for taking the time out to be an r.t. international with thousands of people taking to the streets once again and tonight it seems frustration in greece has again reached boiling point here in athens how bad is the situation making you paint the picture for us well clearly it's actually a lot of anger and some more reasonable enough that was the facility but it's usually the case that so this time of year because the focus is very much on the
12:21 pm
politics and the announcement in just a week even just about every group with the growers even pre-crisis would be the source now given this crisis and all of the measures and much of the pain that the average person is feeling in greece there is more than enough disenchantment. and more people on the street this year i gather that most of the protests of silly beast but there are always a few elements that will create more growth and. yet the visitor reports that the greece is likely to declare default even as soon as this weekend do you think that could happen. for the last fifteen months i can recall on every third or fourth friday afternoon there is similar things being said in this particular case it would be very hilarious but for the fact that it was picked up by a lot of mainstream media now i and many other people in nasa is involved with
12:22 pm
investment and all were getting very panicked phone calls yesterday the possibility of something like this happening over the weekend is absolutely zero greece isn't ready to leave the euro and the eurozone would not be able to throw us out such a we there is actually no legal exit mechanism in the treaties from the eurozone they could force you out practically by cutting off liquidity for you but it would not be something that would suit anybody to be done in such a chaotic and let's hand man and if you do so very calm and collected it's good to hear it quite positive as well i mean none the less the big serious now that the situation in your country is a grim situation hasn't improved despite all the cash has been thrown out there i mean a lot of people are saying no it is time to just get out of the euro zone go it alone it can't get worse can it. kimmie it can actually get very much for now i would agree with many that have criticized the fact that we are in the euro it really
12:23 pm
hasn't been a sort of swords all that much and if one looks at the numbers i mean the euro has appreciated about sixty percent since we actually joined which is done nothing can do it but think about bits if you don't plan very well for such an exit so we don't see unions you risk getting slight you reese the crushing devaluation which could lead to hyperinflation i think it's a discussion and debate that we need to have in greece and it's something that we may actually need to plan for but if you've got the time to do all this is the thing is there again i mean you're saying that the mainstream media is picking up in bringing more doom and gloom the situation that maybe isn't quite as bad as your as your own pointing out but you know a lot of people saying the time for talking has now got some tough decisions some tough actions that but even past time a decision is time for action to happen greece has been under heavy fire for me a credit is to adopt these tough measures the pay are hasn't been good there is
12:24 pm
a kind of a reputation in greece that you hope countryman cheers take of the time there's too much talk you aren't doing enough do you think the pressure is warranted. i think some of the pressure certainly is laurens it on certain issues like structural reforms we have been too lax and many good laws of the past but not really implemented on issues like herring or stuck with privatization of wealth it's really a bit cute smile because you want to soften bubble like these pops evaluations of crashed so it's actually very hard to do anything other than fire stuff and in terms of austerity and i don't want to sound like an apologist here but it hasn't worked in many countries the best way to actually destroy tax revenues is crush consumption and so you get solace spending confidence is at an all time low and with no tax revenues you can't repay your debts and let's also remember this second bailout that has been organized is a much better and realistic plan the littlest one at least partly takes into
12:25 pm
account issues of solvent and introduction and at least equal and gates added on to gauge but remember this isn't free money this is all returned plus interest and it can you get your economic crystal ball out for just thirty seconds and tell us what you think the future of the euro is with no forseeable solutions for the crisis on the rise at the moment really. will give and i think this focus especially out of this weekend on greece is a little bit of meats i think the biggest problem that the eurozone faces is its iron failure to organize and its own failure to realize that a lot of the underlying problems from the fact that it was never structured trouble even first place now rather than focusing on greece which is a very manageable situation really when you think about it it's only three hundred sixty billion worth of national debt compare that to something like spain or italy now these are the elephants in the world italy itself has
12:26 pm
a national debt of one point nine trillion now that is too big to bail not too big to to fail. it's another country it's another story and you know i could talk all night see about this but we're out of time next crackers economic analyst talking to us from athens real pleasure to have you on the program thank you thank you very much already let me to update you on some international news in brief now let's start in libya shall we hundreds there in the rebel taliban guards the of walked on to the streets to protest against the country the actions of the country's new government meantime libyan rebels are pulling back from bani walid one of the four remaining colonel gadhafi strongholds as nato airstrikes reportedly start in the area the towns held by loyalists have been given until saturday to surrender to the new libyan leadership as the rebels continue to search for the fugitive leader gadhafi as late as all your messages claim he's still in libya despite reports of his family and some associates crossing the border into tunisia air. the arab league has reached an agreement with syrian president bashar al assad on
