twelve thirty pm in moscow these iraqi headlines as colonel gaddafi is remaining troops hold out against government forces and nato air strikes in libya the french president faces a legal battle at home over his country's intervention in the war lawyers claim nicolas sarkozy should be held to account for crimes against humanity committed during the bombing of libya. international efforts are being stepped out to calm border tension in kosovo or neither locals nor serbs are willing to back down after recent bloodshed e.u. is mulling a proposal to end the deadlock sparked by the violent seizure of two border posed by kosovo ins in july. and

a statehood showdown at the un as the general assembly gets ready to vote on the status of palestine with deep divisions preparing to crack the surface the u.s. and israel remain opposed to giving the palestinians a seat at the world body and ahead of that vote in new york r.t. sat down with palestinian politician one on a sure are we she believes that getting full member status of allow israel to be held to account for what she says are crimes against the palestinian people and the occupation of their life. archie sitting down with award winning scholar and internationally recognized politician executive committee member of the palestine liberation organization dr hanan ashrawi thank you so much for joining us today thank you and it's my pleasure dr shari let's start with one of the most highlighted issues at this year's united nations general assembly gathering of course palestine's bid for recognized statehood we know that palestine is already recognized by over one hundred twenty
4:32 am
countries why does this u.n. vote matter it's very important because this is a turning point in sort of palestinian history and in the history of the snaking in the region we do have as you said bilateral recognitions from different countries we have right now one hundred twenty seven but at the same time we are we have been engaged in a peace process that has taken on over two decades of prolongation and stalling with creating facts on the ground building settlements in the latterly acting from a position of power as an occupier and undermining the chances of peace and the objectives of the two state solution and so on so we are trying not to say that this is a new phrase a new era let's say we are going to get international community to say that the palestinian question and the palestinian people of that i think start becoming nation and should be placed within this international context as the essence of multilateralism as the source of international global legislation and the
4:33 am
palestinian question must be resolved in accordance with international law the united states has made it more than clear that a veto is really it's only possible reaction to a resolution at the security council so are there really there are plans reported that palestine we consider going through just through the general assembly is that really in the works well we have many different options and on current terms and restarted all of them and we're keeping all our options open frankly. speaking repros if we go through the security council passed directly that means we want the front objectives and we certainly don't want to have a confrontation with the u.s. but the ones who are choosing a confrontation over something that is actually part of their own policies and that on the clegg suppose we could go also go to the journalist family and ask for upgrading of our status quo greater recognition and then ask for support but i would be to go to the security council so what we're saying is we can go straight
4:34 am
to the security council and deal with the consequences and if the us wants to isolate itself on the wrong side of the law it could be its choice or we could go in the directly to the security council and also fortified my positive solution and that's an assembly and then again the present out of it but as i said that many many options and we're keeping them all up and like going through the security council going through the general assembly would mean a nonmember state status for palestine why would that be important that's very important because although we are now we have observer status as the p.l.o. and we want to have. a nonmember state status which means there would be a recognition of statehood but it's our membership that is an observer membership but that opens the doors for us to become a member of all you and organizations institutions agencies and so on it would
4:35 am
empower the palestinians it would also declared our territory as occupied territory not disputed territory and therefore up for grabs and to declare is true still i'm as occupied not as the eternally unified capital of israel forever and ever and it will lay the foundations of any new solution based on international law so it's very important and we can also hold israel accountable which is something. that is the having is the us absolutely insane when talking about accountability because they've gone on any kind of accountability for israel whether through you and human rights organizations like the u.n. man council on human international criminal court or international court of justice they just want to ensure that there's a continuous outside going about the law you have mentioned access you want to situations if we look for example at the international criminal court access to that what kind of really impact would that have for a power start that would have
4:36 am
a tremendous impact because that means that the international criminal court can act in accordance with their own convention and their own stature describes settlement activities as they walk around because when you violate the fourth geneva convention when you move populations of your own into occupied territory and you take other people's lands this is a war crime a collective crime against the palestinian people so aftermath equally we can start a suit and law cases against not just the government but i guess even all the settlers and the settler will be seen as being part of this war crime and that's why i quite worried about the palestinians becoming a state or getting access to the instruments of accountability particularly when connection of criminal court in an interview with archie we had aired previously a palestinian politician of your shot said to us that it's released must be changed to be taken to paradise. on their way to peace who is strong enough do you think to
4:37 am
forge a chain like but look i think. it's a modern power more than anything else. it seems to me that if you can use your powers of persuasion and humanity for the israelis to understand that a land grab their greed for the land for control for subjugating and other people is the strategic liability for israel it's. rational political legal human decision you have to think about the consequences of your sins but you cannot for ever claim to be above the law and claim to be exempt from any accountability and claim real impunity and preferential treatment but there is a time in which all these things will end then you will be held accountable like any other country and you can continue a slab and slaving people forever and getting away with it so it's a question of persuasion and looking clearly at reality and understanding that given also the context of the arab spring given the context of regional and even
4:38 am
global changes and transformations has a unique chance to make peace quickly with the palestinians and to be accepted in the region rather than continue with its unilateral dangerous. policies of of control and oppression and theft of land and so on and then the lady then i would propose which is going to be further confrontations violence and extremism now if we look a little bit at united states involvement in all of this we know that last year barack obama spoke at the general assembly saying that hopefully by this year two thousand and eleven palestine will be recognized as a member within the united nations now his administration is clearly opposed to this do you see this is a stab in the back i see this as a source of commander real disappointment because he there is the expectations in a variety of ways starting with ending all settlement activities to acting
4:39 am
decisively in peacemaking to basing all peacemaking on international law and multilateralism and to building the palestinian state on the sixty seven monday and so having it in length on almost all of these things that he has created the sense of letdown among the palestinians the arabs even the world people of good conscience who expected obama to live up to his promises and whose values and principle. other than to not of interest right now. if he's seen as doing israel's bidding and trying to justify the occupation and trying to justify israeli policies and actually putting pressure on everybody starting with the palestinians who are of course the weakest part because we do not i mean kind of. thing so he can be seen as sort of not just pulling the palestinians but he'll be seen as weighing in on the side of an illegal situation and he'll be undermining the
4:40 am
standing and credibility and the u.s. in the region and throughout the world other brokers russia the european union the united nations today have really in place. what they're trying to do is very dangerous because the u.s. in many ways has changed its policy to accommodate this extreme government and not only that it was trying to put pressure on the quartet accept this position. itself negate by saying palestinians should go to rio and on the e.u. by asking them to change their longstanding policy on the two state solution and so on and jerusalem the legality of settlements and of course on that side that has taken a very clear stance on the basis of international law and palestinian rights including that at the commission so by adopting the israeli position and then trying to salvage the throat of the quartet the u.s. is really the supporting and legal system as well as the political system as well
4:41 am
as the human and credit of achieving a just peace what do you think americans and some european countries have been willing to welcome the arab spring and yet palestine's self determination is seen as something pretty much an acceptable by the united states in particular it is ironic let's not withstand that look at the arab spring as a way of indication of the. i have towards democracy and freedom and human rights and human dignity and yet when it comes to the palestinians we are decontextualized we are removed this is very selected precisely because i think out occupier is as red. as a domestic issue in the us and has enormous influence on their careers and the fates of many politicians through elections through access to the media through the campaign funds and so on. and of course there is this alliance that we talk about
4:42 am
so it is not heated like any other country is a has constantly been exam also because of the heart of the holocaust that history and western guilt over what the jews saw in a sense this has shaped a certain bubble in which was given demanded what i described earlier as a sense of exceptionalism and then tighten moment on unity and of course it has acted with impunity so the palestinians were deprived of the protection of the law and israel was given this exceptional treatment particularly because it has a powerful lobby also and the us there is a growing movement of solidarity with the palestinians and i hope that that would hold their own. countries accountable or systems of government and this is part as you said of the arab spring where the arab spring has moved and elation is to the social media and these global principles they're going to apply just to that world
4:43 am
of palestine or the west like the humanity as a whole and therefore the exemption of the palestinians from these values and the exemption of israel from accountability for violating these values will no longer be tolerated. them i can some may succeed in having that or not a servant. but on values. principles but not for long because they will be held accountable by their own people. we thank you for your time thank you but of my friends that sits next to me.
