head of the un we've been hearing from those making that call the palestinian politician explains why full member status will finally hold israel to account of its actions in occupations. archie sitting down with award winning scholar and internationally recognized politician executive committee member of the palestine liberation organization dr hanan ashrawi thank you so much for joining us today thank you and if there's a smile close for dr shah let's start with one of the most highlighted issues this year's united nations general assembly gathering of course palestine's bid for recognized statehood we know that palestine is already recognized by over one hundred twenty countries why does this u.n. vote matter. it's very important because this is a turning point and sort of palestinian history and in the history of peacemaking in the region we do have as you said bilateral recognitions from different
8:32 am
countries we have by now one hundred twenty seven but at the same time we are we have been engaged in a peace process that has taken on over two decades of prolongation and stalling with israel creating facts on the ground building settlements unilaterally acting from a position of power as an occupier and undermining the chances of peace and the objectives of the two state solution and so on so we are trying now to say that this is a new phase a new era we are going to the international community to say that the palestinian question and the palestinian people have that i thought of such determination and should be placed within this international context as the essence of multilateralism as the source of international global legislation and the palestinian question must be dissolved in accordance with international law now the united states has made it more than clear that a veto is really it's only possible reaction to a resolution at the security council so are there really there are plans reported
8:33 am
that palestine may consider going through just through the general assembly is that really in the works well we have many different options and alternatives and we studied all of them and we're keeping all our options open frankly speaking recurs if we go through the security council directly that means we want different objectives and we certainly don't want to have a confrontation with the u.s. but they're the ones who are choosing a confrontation over something that is actually part of their own policies and that on the lead principle. we could also go to the family and ask for upgrading of us that this score greater decade nation and then ask for support for our bit to go to the security council so what we're saying is we can go straight to the security council. and deal with the consequences if the u.s. wants to isolate itself on the wrong side of the law it could be its joyce or we could go in direct it to the security council also fortified by positive
8:34 am
solution and that's on the assembly and then again the present but as i said many many options and we're keeping them all up open unlike going through the security council going through the general assembly would mean a nonmember state status for palestine why would that be important that's very important because although we are now we have observer status as the p.l.o. and we want to have. a nonmember state status which means there would be a recognition of statehood but it's our membership that is an observer membership but that opens the doors for us to become a member of all you and organizations institutions agencies and so on it would empower the palestinians it would also declare our territory as occupied territory not disputed territory and therefore up for grabs it would declare is to solemnize occupied not as the eternally unified capital of reserve whatever and it would lay
8:35 am
the foundations of any solution based on international law so it's very important and we can also hold israel accountable which is something that is driving israel and the us absolutely insane when talking about accountability because they don't want any kind of accountability put it whether through you and human rights organizations like the un council on human rights or where the international criminal court the international court of justice they just want to ensure that israel continues to act outside the number of the law you have mentioned access to you want to situations if we look for example at the international criminal court access to that what kind of really impact would that have for palestine ballad have a tremendous impact. because that means that the international criminal court can act in accordance with their own convention and their own statute describes settlement activities as a walk around because when you violate the fourth geneva convention when you move
8:36 am
populations of your own into occupied territory and you take other people's lands this is a war crime and collective crime against the palestinian people so automatically we can start a suit and law cases against not just the government but i guess even all the settlers and this that will be seen as being part of this war crime and that's why quite worried about the palestinians becoming a state or getting access to the instruments of accountability particularly the international criminal court well in an interview with r.t. we had aired previously post palestinian politician a bill shot said to us that israelis must be changed to be taken to paradise. on their way to peace who is strong enough do you think to forge a chain like that look i think. it's a modern power more than anything else. seems to me that if you can use your powers of persuasion and humanity for the israelis to understand that
8:37 am
a land grab their greed for their land for control for subjugating and other people is really a strategic liability for a russian political legal human decision you have to think about the consequences of your actions that you cannot for ever claim to be above the law and claim to be exempt from any accountability and claim really impunity and preferential treatment that there is a time in which all these things will end then you will be held accountable like any other country and you can have continuous love and slaving people whatever and getting away with it so it's a question of persuasion and looking clearly at the reality and understanding that given also the context of the arab spring given the current. text of regional and even global changes and transformations israel has a unique chance to make peace quickly with the palestinians and to be accepted in
8:38 am
the region rather than continue with its unilateral dangerous adventurous policies of control and oppression and theft of land and so on and then delay the inevitable which is going to be further confrontations violence and extremism now if we look a little bit at united states involvement in all of this we know that last year barack obama spoke at the general assembly saying that hopefully by this year two thousand and eleven palestine will be recognized as a member within the united nations now his administration is clearly opposed to this do you see this is a stab in the back i see this as a source of commander sled down real disappointment because he theys the expectations and a variety of ways starting with ending all settlement activities to acting decisively in peacemaking to basing all peacemaking on international law and multilateralism and to building the palestinian state on the sixty seven boundaries so having it in that dawn on most all these things that he has created
8:39 am
a sense of let down among the palestinians the arabs even the world people of good conscience who expected obama to live up to his promises and to his values and principles other than to narrow self-interest right now. if he's seen as doing israel's bidding and trying to justify the occupation and trying to justify israeli policies and actually putting pressure on everybody starting with the palestinians who are of course the weakest part because we do not have any kind of power or weapons or anything so he'll be seen as sort of not just bullying the palestinians but he'll be seen as weighing in on the side of an illegal and unjust situation and he'll be undermining the stand. interests of the u.s. in the region and throughout the world other brokers russia the european union united nations have really in place as
8:40 am
a place what they're trying to do is very dangerous because the u.s. in many ways has changed its policy to accommodate this extreme government and not only that but it was trying to put pressure on the quartet to accept this position . again by saying palestinians shouldn't go to view on the e.u. by asking them to change their longstanding policy of a two state solution and so on and jerusalem and the legality of settlements and of course that has taken a very clear stance on the basis of international law and palestinian rights including that at the terminix and so by adopting the israeli position and then trying to salvage the throat of the quartet the u.s. is is the story and legal system as well as a political system and run as a human imperative of achieving a just peace what do you think americans and some european countries have been willing to welcome the arab spring and yet palestine's self determination is seen
8:41 am
as something pretty much an acceptable by the united states in particular it is ironic this that will stand that look at the arab spring as a way of vindication towards democracy and freedom and human rights and human dignity and yet when it comes to the palestinians we are decontextualized. this is very selective this actually because i think out occupier. as a domestic issue in the us and has enormous influence on the. fates of many politicians through elections access to the media. campaign finance and song. and of course this is the key to a long for people. did like any other country. discuss the example also because of the part of the holocaust that history western didn't know what it
8:42 am
could do so in a sense this has shaped a certain bubble in which was given demanded what i describe as a sense of exceptionalism and the impact on monk and unity and of course it has acted with impunity so the palestinians were deprived of the protection of the law and was given the success or not particularly because it has a powerful lobby also and that is a growing movement of solidarity with the palestinians and i hope that that would hold that own. countries accountable or systems of government and this is part of the arab spring where the arab spring has moved. to the social media and these global principles that do not apply just to the arab world of palestine to the west like to humanity as a whole and therefore the exemption of the palestinians from these values and the
8:43 am
exemption from accountability for violating these values will no longer be tolerated. the americans may succeed in having that on not of self interest but on values and principles but not for long because they too will be held accountable by their own people dr hanan ashrawi thank you for your time with us today thank you very much and it's nice to meet you . in the far away life. where human life is ruled by nature. of planet earth is scarcely preserved by the. light in the deep. those who do with. stored times are. wealthy british.

their first ever match in the world cup i was it didn't go to last week against united states but it's a bigger challenge but if the win this it's the shock of the tournament to date we've got more in the plus the rest of the sport coming. thanks for joining us this is sports it's a we've got plenty ahead over the next ten minutes or so including. taking control is a neat sole ownership of the russian premier league summit after a long time leader c.s.k. record their third straight games without a win. seconds art russia gear up for much number two at the rugby world cup it's really the team who lie in wait for the birds on chewstick. living at large in some little bush cities claims for a european tour card after the nara with the victories of the russian challenge cup

a match but russia's coach. still expects a very tough encounter because they go more than that it's every team whether they're in a man to have thirty players at their disposal and i don't think outearning some of them will change anything significantly in fact if we use a few players from the bench it might well be beneficial for us as replacements want to prove that they deserve a place in the starting line up for a new slow get a cup of italian strength is definitely a backpack and a scrum is one area where russia are particularly weak and a lot of them burns will be winning his first full cap for the bears believes this is an area where russia will have to watch out. piece of the scrum these plus. the top few of the world so. it's going to be a point of. we're going to have to try and get some sort of parity or at least get a good ball back. we try and scrum and also line out is very strong point for them

and they said pace rushes back plays definitely best strength however they failed to create many attacking opportunities against us this month or so you have team if hardly had a touch of a ball in that opening encounter and he like the rest of the team we praying for the rain to stay away unlike in new plymouth and the bears coaching staff believe attack could be the best form of defense against the italians so moved. because unfortunately we failed to demonstrate that in our opening game against the united states the more you control the ball the more your attack the less you have to defend if we succeed with those tactics tomorrow's game should be thrilling of your mission to show that no one is expecting rushed. when unlike vague aim against us say the bears had a decent chance of getting a victory and captain blood is left portion of police for lack of pressure could play into bad hands. wouldn't you think that now would be less pressure on us from the outside and from the media and that should give the team the opportunity to

play in a more relaxed manner little school morale is still very high in the russian camp with the players firmly believing they have a chance of pulling off picture e which even managed to do so would undoubtedly be the shock of a world cup so far but after the disappointment of a opening day defeats of us say the russians are going to be hoping for a much more positive result against italy this time outs will spike be entirely ins who are going to be filtering out what is essentially going to be a second string fifteen there's still going to be hope favorites and russia are going to have to play out of their skins and hope for a little slice of luck as well if they're going to have any chance of winning richard i'm fully don't see nelson new zealand all right that brings us stateside where week two of the n.f.l. season saw some of the early favorites stretch their wings including the hawks who won the battle of the big birds against philadelphia the game notable four star quarterback michael vick's return to atlanta with his new eagles team on the thirty one year old didn't wait around to make his mark throwing his first of two
