operation. proving to everyone she has run the world tonight thanks for choosing r.t. these are all top stories. keeping up the fight in libya tonight with the country's interim leaders are struggling to form a cabinet this is the french president could face a legal battle in the whole movie his country's actions in the war. he used calling for car movie ethnic tension that erupted when kosovo seized two checkpoints on its northern border with serbia it led to serbs locating the approach roads meantime belgrade stop go shave is urging all sides to seek a diplomatic solution. and the palestinians are set to take center stage in new york on friday to try and secure statehood recognition although the wide support

they're getting could clash with a veto wielding u.s. the world's key financial institutions say an independent palestine would be strong enough to cope a little. ahead of that u.n. vote we've been hearing from the people making that call the key palestinian politician next explains to his wife or member state as will finally hold israel to account over its actions and occupation. she's sitting down with award winning scholar and internationally recognized politician executive committee member of the palestine liberation organization dr hanan ashrawi thank you so much for joining us today thank you and it's my pleasure let's start with one of the most highlighted issues this year's united nations general assembly gathering of course palestine's bid for recognized statehood we know that palestine is already recognized by over one hundred twenty countries why does this u.n. vote matter it's very important because this is
2:32 pm
a turning point in sort of palestinian history and in the history of peacemaking in the region we do have as you said bilateral recognitions from different countries we have right now one hundred twenty seven but at the same time we are we have been engaged in a peace process that has taken on over two decades of prolongation and stalling with israel creating facts on the ground building settlements unilaterally acting from a position of power as an occupier and undermining the chances of peace and the objectives of the two state solution and so on so we are trying not to say that this is a new and new era that say we are going to the international community to say to the palestinian question and the palestinian people that i think certain terminations and should be placed within this international context as the essence of multilateralism as the source of international global legislation and the palestinian question must be resolved in accordance with international law now the
2:33 pm
united states has made it more than clear that a veto is really it's only possible reaction to a resolution at the security council so are there really there are plans reported that palestine may consider going through just through the general assembly is that really in the works well we have many different options and we started all of them and we're keeping all our options open frankly. speaking recurs if we go through the security council process the directly that means we want the president objectives and we certainly don't want to have a confrontation with the us but they're the ones who are choosing a confrontation over something that is actually part of their own policies and that on the lead in suppose we could also go to the journalist family and ask for upgrading of us that score greater recognition and then ask for support. to go to the security council so what we're saying is we can go straight to the security council and deal with the consequences and if the us wants to isolate itself with
2:34 pm
israel on the wrong side of the law it could be its stores or we could go into directly to the security council also fortified by a positive resolution and that's on the assembly and then again the present but as i said that many many options and we're keeping them all out open like going through the security council going through the general assembly would mean a nonmember state status for palestine why would that be important that's very important because although we are now we have observers status as the p.l.o. and we want to have. a nonmember state status which means there would be a recognition of statehood but it's our membership that is an observer membership but that opens the doors for us to become a member of all you and organizations institutions agencies and so on it would

empower the palestinians that would also declared the territory as occupied territory not disputed territory and therefore up for grabs it would declare its true solution as occupied not as the eternally unified capital of reserved forever and ever and it would lay the foundations of any new solution based on international law so it's very important and we can also hold israel accountable which is something. that is driving is the us absolutely insane when talking about accountability because they don't want any kind of accountability for israel whether through you and human rights organizations like the un or council on human rights where the international criminal court the international court of justice they just want to ensure that israel continues to act outside the number of the law you have mentioned access you want to situations if we look for example at the international criminal court access to that what kind of really impact will that have passed that this impact because that means that the international criminal
2:36 pm
court can act in accordance with their own convention and their arms that you described the settlement activities as a war crime because when you violate the fourth geneva convention when you move populations of your own into occupied territory and you take other people's lands this is a war crime collective crime against the palestinian people so automatically we can start a suit and law cases against not just the government like against all settlers and this will be seen as being part of this crime and that's why quite worried about the palestinians becoming a state or getting access to the instruments of accountability particularly the international criminal court well in an interview with archie we had aired previously post palestinian politician a bill shot said to us that it's released must be changed to be taken to paradise superman. on their way to peace who is strong enough do you think to forge a chain like that and look i think. it's

a modern power more than anything else. seems to me that if you can use your powers of persuasion humanity for the israelis to understand that. their greed for their land control or subjugating and other people is really a strategic liability for it it's. russian political legal human decision you have to think about the consequences of your sins but you cannot for ever claim to be above the law and claim to be exempt from any accountability and claim really impunity and preferential treatment that there is a time in which all these things will end then you will be held accountable like any other country and you cannot continue in slab and slaving people whatever and getting away with it so it's a question of persuasion and looking clearly at the reality and understanding that given also the context of the arab spring given the context of regional and even

global changes and transformations has a unique chance to make peace quickly with the palestinians and to be accepted in the region rather than continue with its unilateral dangerous adventurous policies of of control and oppression. of land and so on and then the labor and i would quibble which is going to be further confrontations rylan son extremism now if we look a little bit at united states involvement in all of this we know that last year barack obama spoke at the general assembly saying that hopefully by this year two thousand and eleven palestine will be recognized as a member within the united nations now his administration is clearly opposed to this do you see this is a stab in the back i see this as a source of commander sled down real disappointment because he had raised expectations in a variety of ways starting with ending all settlement activities to acting decisively in peacemaking to basing all peacemaking on international law and

multilateralism and to building the palestinian state on the sixty seven mongers so having it in then going on most all these things that he has created a sense of letdown among the palestinians the arabs even there won't be people of good conscience who expect. obama to live up to his promises and to his values and principles. to narrow self-interest right now. if he's seen as doing israel's bidding and trying to justify the occupation and trying to justify israeli policies and actually putting pressure on everybody starting with the palestinians who are of course the weakest part because we do not have any kind of. thing so he can be seen as sort of not just pulling the palestinians but he would be seen as weighing in on the side of illegal and unjust situation and he would be undermining

the standing and credibility of the u.s. in the region and throughout the world other brokers russia the european union united nations have really. what they're trying to do is very dangerous because the u.s. in many ways has changed its policy to accommodate this extreme government minister not only that but it was trying to put pressure on the quartet to accept this position on the you entered again by saying the students from both of you on the e.u. by asking for changes are longstanding policy of the state solution and so on and jerusalem and the legality of settlements and of course that has taken a very clear stance on the basis of international palestinian rights including religion so by adopting the israeli position and then trying to salvage the throat of the quartet the u.s. is is leading the road. system as well as a political system and run as

a human and credit of achieving a just what do you think americans and some european countries have been willing to welcome the arab spring and yet palestine self determination is seen as something pretty much an acceptable for the united states in particular it is ironically. look at the arab spring as a way of indication. towards democracy and freedom and human rights and human dignity and that when it comes to the palestinians we are decontextualized we are driven this is very selective this is actually because i think our occupied israel . is that the mr sharon. has enormous influence on because he has. many politicians through elections access to the media. campaign funding some song. and of course this is the trickle and for people.

like any other country. discuss the example also because of the part of the holocaust like this three western guilt over what they've been through so in a sense this has shaped a certain in which has given them and what i described earlier as a sense of exceptionalism and in fact the moment uniquely and of course it has acted with impunity sort of palestinians were deprived of the protection of the law was given this exceptional people and particularly because it was a powerful lobby old. is a growing movement of solidarity with the palestinians and i hope that that would hold. companies accountable and systems of government and this is part as we said of the arab spring where the arab spring has moved and relation to the social media and these global principles they do not. understand.

like the humanity as a whole and therefore the exemption of the palestinians from these values and the exemption from accountability for violating these values will no longer be tolerated. the americans may succeed and having that all not herself into. it's something that goes on at principles but not for long because they too will be held accountable by their own people dr nashar we thank you for your time with us today thank you very much for instance it's nice to meet for. such issues that so much there's a huge music to share a person time such as if the absence of a peace process the palestinians will ask the united nations to upgrade their

because unfortunately we've failed to demonstrate that in our opening game against the united states the more you control the ball the more your attack the less you have to defend with sixteen with goals tactics is mario's again should be thrilling . but no one is expecting russia to win unlike big game against usa the bears had a decent chance of getting a victory and kept him going to sort of caution of a lack of pressure could play into bad hands. or wouldn't truth i think that now would be less pressure on us from the outside and from the media and that's would give the team the opportunity to play in a more relaxed manner. when i was still very high in the russian camp of the players firmly believing they have a chance of pulling off victory but you can manage to do so would undoubtedly be the shock of the world cup so far a lot of the disappointment of their opening day defeat for the usa the russians going to be hoping for a much more positive result against italy this time outs it was quite the italians
