keep smiling the old. mission steve now with all of you. to. take your job this basic debt is racist hate filled it's the end of the line for convicted contrail or troy davis but his supporters aren't giving up without a fight so at the eleventh hour of protests will last did you not say this man finds. the real power in the united nations resides in the security council and it requires a consensus among the five permanent members of power and persuasion a look at burton really lines at the united nations general assembly there may be more than two hundred world leaders of the table but it's only a handful of countries and steal the show what exactly is the point. palestinian movement the united nations is not going to create

a state not in reality not not even in fact in effect in theory is this because the reality is lawmakers in washington have too much outside influence as politicians call for president obama to stand by israel and powerful lobbies to tighten their grip should carcinogens give up all hope of a sovereign state. the same economy different day this as the international monetary fund releases a new report claiming the global economy is entering a dangerous new phase so with italy's credit downgrade and economic woes in the u.s. and europe is the world that is bound to recession. it's tuesday september twentieth eight pm in washington d.c. i'm christine friends out there watching our team. well in less than twenty four
8:02 pm
hours a potentially innocent man could be executed troy davis was convicted and put on death row twenty years ago for the one thousand nine hundred nine murder of a savannah georgia police officer since that time seven of the nine key witnesses who implicated him taking back their stories also saying they were pressured by police officers into giving false eyewitness accounts a georgia parole board the nine forty two year old troy davis his final bid for clemency he is scheduled to die by lethal injection tomorrow at seven pm all across the country massive protests have sparked with people wearing t. shirts and holding signs saying i am troy davis we're all three davis many people tonight speaking out in anger over what they say again could be the execution of an innocent man you got to understand this is a guy who was convicted in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine talk about twenty two years of careers have been built around his case and around other cases and if
8:03 pm
you pull just one card from that house of cards a lot of very powerful people go down but i want to talk more about the ins and outs of this case michael stark is with the campaigns and the death penalty and joins me now michael a lot of different aspects of this there's no physical evidence there is no d.n.a. and the majority of the jury has now said that there are stories that they gave were not even true it seems to me that reasonable doubt must only apply when it comes to the conviction initially and not the death penalty. well i yeah i mean there's been a labyrinth of people's process but apparently that appeals process you know as hasn't been looking at it in the actual facts because as you said nine of the original are witnesses that the prior case held on to the nine seven have recanted their testimony and of the two that remain both of perjured and changed their stories so there's there's a version there's not virtually there is no case against troy davis and yet george
8:04 pm
is moving forward they would rather kill an innocent man rather than admit a mistake which is barbaric to say the least people who are in support of seeing this execution happen tomorrow say you know this has been twenty years that's how long that troy davis his legal team has had to go back to to re appeal why hasn't it happened why is it now only happening the night before his scheduled execution. well i mean there are the voices you know i guess you could look at governor rick perry who was executed over two hundred fifty people as the governor and his supporters who are getting applause they were applying applauding his his record even though of course the republicans that's right and yet governor perry himself is very likely executed an innocent man todd willingham who is case was was totally shredded by by his own actually forensic board that looking at it so this this idea that somehow we can get the death penalty right whether it's in texas or
8:05 pm
florida or in georgia words or choice davis is is a complete complete sham and the idea that somehow that this was justice that somehow was going on in georgia is amounts to justice as i was also a sham it's not justice it's a travesty and i know your organization has looked at a lot of these cases over history and now in this one we have our basic doesn't doesn't teach it we have former president jimmy carter more than fifty members of congress lending their names to a campaign that they are calling too much doubt these are some heavy hitters some big names what will it take for things to change for this execution to be stopped. well and things keep popping in choice favor just today the senate whip the leader of the democratic party in the senate uncalled for actual resistance among the correction staff to the execution along with the southern center for human rights a prestigious law firm in georgia so the you know the voices of choice supporters
8:06 pm
keep keep growing you know it's there are a whole range of decision makers in this case whether it's the numerous courts that have that hard to intervene whether it's the d.a. in the case or whether it's the georgia board of pro and pardons who actually has the power to reconsider what their horrible decision so they're you know the chain always breaks and the weakest link i can't predict where it is but as activists we're going to keep pressing it and pushing to make sure that justice is served and michael you just joined us straight from the protest we saw you in the video there pretty great turnout huge protests as well in new york and across the country when you were there just a little earlier this evening what kind of things were people saying what kind of things were you hearing what folks are are very determined and you know and clearly you know it was an incredible disappointment and saddening to hear it but the parole. board did on this morning so i won that hand you know
8:07 pm
people have been you know were pushed back by that but around in reasserting that you know that they don't have the final word that petrol is still alive in his life is worth fighting for and yes you're right there have been demonstrations all across the country all across the world there was a demonstration in paris today so we're part of a national and international movement fighting for justice and you know we're out to with this with just the simple idea the truth you know that that's enough for us and we think with the truth we can go pretty far certainly if you look on the twitter sphere all over international news media they are talking about this case to. talk to me about this your organization is not just against the execution of troy davis it's against all the death penalty across the board in this country it's pretty interesting when you do look at the countries that still have the death penalty the united states is one of the few developed nations that still has this as a form of punishment talk to me about that sort of international perspective about
8:08 pm
this well you're right the death penalty is is increasingly isolated i mean for the united states is increasingly isolated in its use of the death penalty. and the fact that it's southern states like georgia and texas that are leading in executions while the rest of the country is actually adults just as the statistics show is actually turning against the definitely so even in the united states there's there's the real question of which way we're going to follow the texas model or whether we're going to follow states like maryland who is a moratorium or new jersey and new york who have abolished the death penalty which way forward and clearly you know we have a strong feeling that we should abolish the death penalty it doesn't deter crime it kills innocent people it's cruel and unusual punishment it's a biased and racist in its application there are no rich people in the death penalty in fact the single most inter-meeting factor of who's on death row is not that sort the facts of the case but the quality of your defense and that's why most people in death row are poor like troy davis if he was rich or you know as
8:09 pm
a different color i think the outcome would have been sad to say it's horrible to say its outcome would have been very different in this case none the less important factors to consider when talking about all these kinds of cases michael stark from the campaign to end the death penalty thanks for joining me. my. the way let's continue our coverage now of the sixty sixth annual united nations general assembly r.t. has several crews on the ground there monitoring various aspects of this meeting perhaps the issue with the heaviest of global implications is palestinian president mahmoud abbas's plans to formally request membership of the general assembly move is expected this friday and has been strongly opposed by the u.s. and israel both claiming it would undermine undermine chances to return to peace talks however the majority of the general assembly supports it so we want to take a look tonight at the breakdown of the u.n.
8:10 pm
and structure its goals it's symbolic power and its actual power are to correspondent more important i have more. if global politics were a sport. these i didn't ition would be the grand arena. and september would be opening season nearly two hundred of the world's most powerful ten not so powerful players descend on new york city gathering in one room for a week's worth of speeches and a chance to grandstand on the international status nearly ten thousand delegates in two thousand journalists are in town for the general assembly's debate but in reality five countries are the ones who really matter russia china france the us and britain the permanent security council members with veto power the real power in the united nations resides in the security council and requires a consensus among the five permanent members and as long as the want one or one or
8:11 pm
more of the permanent members will go along with something the us ability to act is limited no resolution can succeed if opposed by any of the big five case in point the current policy in the campaign for un membership and statehood and initiatives the us publicly supported last year when we come back here next year we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the united nations an independent sovereign state of palestine living in peace with israel but this year it's the opposite with washington saying it will veto the palestinian un membership it's warning of additional collateral damage one of the things that i that i hope the palestinian leadership is concerned considering is the day after what will happen when after whatever. show we have in the united nations is done. what will change in the real world for the palestinian people. the answer is nothing and sadly ironically the majority of
8:12 pm
the general assembly the fourth palestinian un membership the assembly alone with two thirds majority can award nonmember observer status for that. in eons the vatican enjoys and doesn't need security council approval to do so so no one can veto this decision some believe however the u.n. is the wrong forum for resolving major international disputes it's a very dysfunctional situation and actually the u.n. really isn't the one isn't really the venue even for this the un only gets the sort of hype aspects of these trades and deals with them pretty badly to the israeli palestinian problem at the u.n. is is mostly theater and this is just one one particularly for a freakish example of this global gathering attracts the security crowds and media madness of a sports championship but when it comes to practical outcomes scoring more than a symbolic victory could be unlikely even if there is a permanent member who are three who believe that. palestine should not be
8:13 pm
a member of the u.n. they want it on record but the vast majority of the people the world do believe that it's time the i want to enjoy a gathering all we have why i like. that many wonder if the super bowl of diplomatic strategy leads to anything more than the about itself. artsy. i think it's an interesting comparison a major sporting event in a larger arena york city but here's a question who will the winners and losers be and for that matter who are the referees well earlier i spoke to radio host alex jones about the structure of the united nations he says he believes that system has always been broken. always since its founding the power has resided as you pointed out with the security council and the rest of it is mainly a debating society in the west has used the u.n. as a place to basically get all the world leaders in one place so they can have the i.m.f.
8:14 pm
and world bank come in and attempt to buy them off or set them up or use different sex operatives on them but more and more of the un has become more than a debating club that it's become a place where opinions not popular with the ruling elite get voiced by the majority of other nations and see israel as an apartheid state regardless of which side of that debate you're on and so now more and more the un is being shown to be ceremonial and to be basically nothing but a arena for these fake debates so that's why the west mainly the u.s. and israel in england are now moving to try to even reduce the power of the un more because more and more it's not going along with their different directive so that's basically my view on the united nations it was set up to help establish a private corporate local government through the big banks that are going into the
8:15 pm
other nations and try to take them over via subterfuge and economic hitman operations. so now they're just moving to a pure global government run by finance oligarchy that we see swallowing europe they don't really even need the un anymore for that they have economic warfare they are saying allies that this is nothing new of the corruption that we saw the fact that this is actually controlled by a very small group that you're saying this is nothing new that it was actually set up that way and they were actually starting to see a little bit of change some as you call them a fake debate i guess though what's your suggestion how would you turn this around i mean would you dismantle and build a new united nations would you maybe move it out of new york city which has got to be by the way some of the most expensive real estate in the world i mean what's the answer here. well i believe in what george washington and thomas jefferson stood for not being in tangled with other countries not being involved other people's
8:16 pm
wars but wanting to trade with people and friends and i'm all for if nations want to contribute a small amount to a meeting place or several meeting places and call it. something like the you know free republics council or free sovereign nations council and then have true true discussions where where countries can all together vote away the rights of other day chanst as the un has basically attempted to do through the security council dictatorship but instead have non-binding resolutions and agreements and then if separate nations want to form alliances or agreements that are more binding they can do that we do need a place to have the world talk but it doesn't need to be paid for by the robber barons david rockefeller the british royalty and others as a way to put of bill that glove on the iron fist of colonialism that was radio host
8:17 pm
alex jones. the conversation over the size and strength and power of a future palestinian state is one you know i realize that have dominated the global stage for decades and there's no doubt a conversation that most people have very strong opinions about and those opinions often translate into influence which can then in turn translate into action as ours is killing for found out one major influence here in washington may have played a very key role in president obama's change of heart. same floor same nations same debate when we come back here next year we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the united nations an independent sovereign state of palestine living in peace with israel but one year later a different american position the palestinian move at the united nations is not going to create a state not in reality. not even in fact in effect and in theory because the fundamental issues there divide the parties will remain to be resolved as
8:18 pm
palestinian leaders push to become a full member state at the united nations pro israel groups have been pushing to influence leaders in washington by congressman tim scott i would be about to do it all days ago. and i have the greatest spiritual and political revival our very long time documents filed with the house ethics committee show that scott and his nephew took a twenty one thousand dollar trip to israel in august that wasn't alone in total eighty one congressman one fifth of the entire house of representatives made a trip courtesy of the american israel education foundation the charitable arm of the american israel public affairs committee a powerful lobby a powerful opportunity for the israeli government to push its agenda it's crazy distorted if you will what's happening it is real and what's happening but i think that's also looking for the course and fortunately it in the way that it sort of. foreign policy runs. by the very

rational journey apac and other pro israel groups contribute the most of anybody to federal candidates in the united states with eleven point seven million dollars in donations in two thousand and ten alone it is the responsibility of every pro israel activists to increase the number of individuals making their own direct financial contributions to the campaigns of pro israel members and candidates for congress a pac is increasingly joined by pro israel even jellicoe christian groups when you take the combined forces of this lobbying effort and the christian scientists organizations it's quite substantial influential conservative pundit glenn beck brought hundreds of christians to israel for his rally in israel there is more courage in one soldier then in the combined and cold hearted so they are

very bureaucrat that the united nations the u.s. house of representatives voted four hundred seven to six to cut all aid to the palestinian authority should it seek statehood a position supported by chairwoman ileana russell and it was traveled or sent her staff to israel. six times with lobbyist dollars palestinian scheme is not the right way to get peace with the with israel how will recognition of a palestinian state bring israel and the palestinians closer to peace but critics say blocking palestinian statehood is not a position that makes sense for the united states is not going to help our position of the arab world we obviously support israel in such a way that it could actually destructive but there is jewish is strong but certainly it's not us it's largely just national security interests with elections just around the corner the ability of lobbying groups to shape u.s. foreign policy remains formidable kill in forward r t washington d.c. the white house also announced as evening that president obama will meet with palestinian president mahmoud abbas tomorrow and to dig
8:21 pm
a little deeper into all of this i spoke a little while ago to the editor of counterpunch alexander cockburn i started off by asking him to give me his take on u.s. ambassador susan rice's claim that the bid for palestinian statehood would quote not create a state where you have to say what is it is you clearly is that the fact that for twenty long years the united states has been so supportive of israel and the palestinians have gotten nowhere and it's very comical and disgusting to hear the united states. please no no we can really do a deal but we say no one believes a word of this what the palestinians might get out of this maneuver is open to discussion but something is better than nothing they had absolutely nothing the credibility of israel in the world at large is zero and with it the credibility of the united states is near zero as well so why do you think that president obama has said these things he's certainly come out
8:22 pm
a little stronger at least in his language with several different mentions of the desire for a palestinian state with a desire of one hundred fifty seven borders why do you think if as you say nothing's going to change because it hasn't changed in twenty years why even bring it up. good point i guess he was trying to hold the credibility that he thought he wanted with the cairo speech that the u.s. could be an honest broker but after whatever it is three years of obama it's clear that he's not an honest broker i mean the. whole thing is clearly of course everybody knows it and it's also become clearly a political issue in the united states so i guess it's no surprise that the republican presidential candidates are coming out and slamming president obama on his previous positions this morning texas governor rick perry talked about what he called president obama's middle east policy of appeasement and i want to play a little bit about what he had to say and then get your reaction. we would not be here today at this very precipice of such
8:23 pm
a dangerous move. if you obama policy in the middle east wasn't naive and arrogant misguided and dangerous i think this is a good opportunity alexander for us to talk about the different notions that on people and namely u.s. politicians have you know calling obama's policy naive arrogant misguided and dangerous that seems to be what a lot of people outside of this country think about president obama's policy when he stands by israel so i guess talk a little bit about that that has to do with someone when you look at someone like governor perry whose experience of international affairs is near zero but obviously his advisors say we need to jewish money we need the jewish vote in florida we need the jewish vote in california we need that and if we can detach some of the like look at the recent congressional election in new york where they're bound and got
8:24 pm
a seat that had been held by the democrats so it's nineteen twenty three and they say the reason is that the jews are trying to tell. her to get with the program otherwise they'll recognize republicans when when rick perry says that i mean my eyes will hold out a huge banking bill and say put your tourist money in here. you know on the other side saudi arabia has pledged to end its special relationship with washington if the u.s. goes forward with its veto so talk a little bit about kind of what's at stake here and you know with the different countries that the u.s. is friends with and their different reactions and that will calm down as a result of this there. but i think for saudi arabia to say because of the special relationship the united states has it's kind of ridiculous i mean saudi arabia is the thirty second state many ways so then to make a statement like that is clearly absurd they're trying to maintain a little bit of credibility because they're under pressure from the initiatives
8:25 pm
a country like turkey is they're under pressure from the possible positions that might evolve in egypt and so their mere clearly trying to maintain a little detachment now is alexander coburn editor of counterpunch. well there is very little sunshine in the forecast when it comes to global growth in the year ahead this according to the international monetary fund who also says if major changes are not made soon the united states and the eurozone will plummet back into recession earlier i spoke to michael pancho the president of pens or portfolio strategies here's what he had to set up for us. something big has to happen soon and what does that really mean how could they possibly be surprised that global g.d.p. growth is going to be sub par both this year and next year and indeed as far as the eye can see japan is in a recession europe is falling apart and us g.d.p. has less than one percent annual growth and it's only because we miscalculate the
8:26 pm
rate of inflation so even emerging markets are going to suffer because their export driven economy and who they sell to well they sell to europe japan and the united states so it's no surprise to me you know we really never came out of the first recession the great recession that started in december of two thousand and seven and you know we like to ask this question all the time who is to blame i know that some people you know say of course we are in a bad situation but the tsunami in japan you know the underestimate in the middle east in north africa that all and the rise in oil prices as a result there was interest here there was in a recession before the tsunami hit so i don't know how you can blame the tsunami and you can't blame mother nature for the fact that greece is an insolvent country and you can't blame mother nature for the fact that italian ten year yields are suddenly stubbornly close to six percent even though e.c.b. is counterfeiting money just the same rate as ben bernanke you imagine italy of
8:27 pm
course it just had its credit rating dropped by standard and poor's to an a from an a plus i do want to talk about the global impact and i know that in two thousand and ten when it was very clear that greece was in trouble and investors were starting to get out the federal reserve kind of looked deep into this and they looked to see what would happen if bank to bank in the u.s. if for example portugal and spain were hit hard as well from what i understand from the reports that i read and they came to the conclusion that it would not be too detrimental in last italy i want to get your take on whether this downgrade is really really bad news. well personally i mean a plus to a i mean does anybody really believe that italy and i'm italian so it hurts me to say it is that he couldn't really believe anybody really believing that italy deserves an a rating their debt to g.d.p. is one hundred twenty percent and rising their interest rates are and their bond market is in full revolt they're relying upon john clore tree say and his printing
8:28 pm
press and his inflation that keep interest rates low this is a very bad scenario not only for greece but for italians and all and a significant all but a significant number of european banks are insolvent the e.c.v. has to buy all of that sovereign debt and take it off their balance sheet that is the final answer the final solution is that europe is headed towards a sort of why mar germany type of situation and the u.s. is pressing along just a few years behind that that's the sad truth in other words there's a downgrade in at least sort of just a slap on the rest of padding on how you look at it. let the downgrade in italy is out this week we shouldn't worry about moody's fitch and standard and poor's so much here in the united states or in europe the real downgrade comes on the part of the international bond market vigilantes when they say it's over it is over
8:29 pm
interest rates rise g.d.p. falls debt to g.d.p. ratio skyrocket and it's all over the point here is that you cannot get to that point that straw that breaks the camel's back i hate latitudes but that's true once you cross the rubicon there is no answer but the fall greece will default that means somebody has to take that pain and it's going to be either the vanquished or it's going to be this central bank creating inflation and then everybody suffers why do you think gold is up almost every day up over eighteen dollars an ounce and gold stocks are starting to rise as pent up or fall the us treasury have a nice allocation to gold stocks because it is no secret anymore we're going to monetize or at least attempt to monetize the situation a way which has never worked in the history of planet earth a lot of interesting points as always from micro pencil president of and so far only a.
