ok renaissance hotel ok grill suites hotel room pacific silver bristles and spa. in this room look he's available in some of the details of the reus sullivan hotel jerusalem. president obama sets up a standoff at the un general assembly with sovereignty seeking the palestinians set to clash with a veto holding us despite overwhelming international support plus the. banging the drum for a new nation thousands of palestinians poor onto the streets of the west bank supporting a bid for statehood at the u.n. . on hammering the palestinians if you have a minor way these cuban and any punishment on the street and people celebrate the feast tell me occasion join me in a few moments now when you will. and the eurozone future is under review wait at its debts with greece trying to speed up cuts in the i.m.f. warning a new recession could be looming. it's
3:01 pm
eleven pm in moscow i match reza good to have you with us here on r t our top story the showdown over palestinian statehood set to dominate the u.n. general assembly and play out on the streets of new york the majority of the international community including russia is ready to support the bid but the u.s. says a palestinian state can only be a true free dialogue with israel for more on this we're joined by our attorneys maria port and i live york hello marina so where does the issue over palestinian statehood stand at this moment. at this moment the palestinians are still moving forward with their campaign for u.n. membership now this is despite the speech that was given by u.s. president barack obama obama addressed the international community saying that he's
3:02 pm
in the middle east can only come from direct negotiations between the palestinians and the israelis and the kind of statements or resolutions from the united nations would help a peace agreement obama encouraged all members of the general assembly to talk to the palestinians and the israelis and convince them to get back to the negotiation table as you mentioned the majority of u.n. members to support the palestinian bid for u.n. membership and statehood but the u.s. has publicly said it would veto this move if it had to would cast a veto and that would all walk the palestinians from becoming members of the united nations russian foreign minister of sergei lavrov did speak with the press saying that of course direct negotiations is what is wanted by the u.s. should not use its veto to block the aspirations of the palestinians or relations of any other country so at this point the u.s. by casting
3:03 pm
a veto risks losing support in credibility among the arab world because remember president obama supported the tunisians the egyptians the libyans during the arab spring he has spoken out in support of those that are are demonstrating against the leaders of syria and he also mentioned last year that he supports an independent and sovereign calls now to turn around and do something different and not stand by his words he's out actually facing quite a conundrum so use their way to both sides and get out of the situation without using these. well that is the discussions that are taking place on the sidelines of the general assembly the u.s. president did meet privately with the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and you believe the meeting with the palestinian president president mahmoud abbas and from what we are being told there are plans in place to prevent any kind of diplomatic train wreck and that plan would be for the palestinian president to
3:04 pm
officially submit a letter to the security council asking for u.n. membership but the security council wouldn't vote on it right away this would allow a little leverage it would allow time for the mideast quartet which is the european union russia the u.s. and the u.n. to try to convince israel and palestine to get back to the negotiation table and this way it doesn't put anybody in a bad position because if there's a vote in the general assembly israel will likely be isolated if the u.s. casts a veto it will face heavy criticism on among the arab world but if the president of palestine backs away from this campaign he could face heavy criticism from all the palestinians and all of the states around the world that are supporting his campaign for u.n. membership so right now there are talks about how everyone can get out of this seething face but as of now people are working round the clock to see how the story will develop right and so will we argue that marina portnoy live for us in new york thanks for that report. thousands of palestinians are marching across the west bank
3:05 pm
to support their will be yours move to win recognition for their state at the u.n. there's an atmosphere of jubilation as government services in schools were closed to allow people onto the streets to demonstrate or to use policy or has more. thank you for being high so it's right across the west bank is this major that some twenty thousand people have taken to the space of a much less people took off work the schools closed earlier media businesses shut down i'm standing in omaha which is really the focal point of the trial there and in this area the businesses the shops and restaurants have been opened so that people can really celebrate with almost a con of the atmosphere now this doesn't kick start three days of peaceful demonstrations of the palestinians from the start so they will be folding in the run up to the palestinian president mahmoud abbas making their first on friday for statehood at the united nations we've seen some of the such celebrations across the west bank in hebron there were an estimated seventeen thousand people turning out
3:06 pm
for parties and connell's today and some of the scenes unfolding in between him and in nablus they wanted to isolated incidents of violence that did change it will have these have the potential to modern day one in kalandia checkpoint not far from here because it's a little bit of violence in hebron that both of those have been able to control and the people i've been talking to say that not only do they have a commitment to holding peaceful demonstrations but certainly to have a commitment to making sure that this historic moment on the world stage is seen and felt by everyone in the international community for the israeli army says he has the painful violence that what many say is that we must in this paper ration it's almost encouraging if one can say that the violence should happen superman's israeli army has been undergoing an operation called operation on this team and this is all they see it that these peaceful demonstrations of the palestinians say they will hold could iraq to understand into violence that their eyes not only on the palestinians the israeli army also has a i have a meet with rough and tough and then you have israeli states as just yesterday
3:07 pm
there were a number of demonstrations by israeli state says across the west bank and the fixes themselves adamant that they will not allow the palestinians to do what they say take over theirs and now we are hearing initial rumors that some kind of deal has been. struck behind the scenes we do not have confirmation and we do not have the details yet but what we do understand is that the palestinian president mahmoud abbas might on friday the hill making his bid for statehood but instead of asking for the boat to happen at the same time he might delay that and still potentially sometime next year if indeed this is the case it means that america can and is way to pressure on the palestinians has come to basically close certainly extend for. more perspective on this i'm joined by ivan eland from the independent independent institute think tank which focuses on educational and social causes thank you for being with us so we're going into the homestretch what do you think we can expect to happen on friday. well it's hard to say of course but it seems like abbas has
3:08 pm
been using this as a for leverage to get the negotiations going again between israel and the palestinians and that's you know that's what this is all about the palestinians have been united for a long time. i think honestly goshi ations about getting their territory back from israel and israel keeps encroaching and weighing and increasing the settlements which is of course against international law to occupy. and develop kind territory that you've conquered militarily so i think this is this is sort of a desperation move on his part to get more leverage to try to get negotiations going in to try to get you know the two state solution and he was going to the u.n. i think that they've given more leverage over the process now whether he'll take it to a vote or take it see this compromise which you just mentioned. delaying the vote next
3:09 pm
year giving more time for a go she asians but that would still give him leverage to come back next year and. you know have that hanging over the negotiations so he might be able to get a better deal or to get israel to agree to more or more concessions with that with the vote in the future hanging over their over both parties heads turning to mystically president obama is headed for reelection in two thousand and twelve how do you think his policy toward the israeli palestinian conflict is going to sit with the american voters. well i think it's not necessarily with the american voters don't pay much attention to it there are certain groups in the united states that pay a lot of attention to its jewish voters which have been. a big bedrock of the democratic party and in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight when it looked like harry truman was going to lose he he recognize israel eleven minutes
3:10 pm
after it provocatively disk declared its independence which the arabs didn't want and so he famously said well i have no arab constituents but i have a lot of people who are for design as i'm paraphrasing there but and i think obama is in the same. boat he's a democratic president but now i think both parties the fundamentalist christians are also big proponents of israel on the republican side so i think it's even more locked up than it was in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight when harry truman had to do that for it to get reelected or did it in part to get reelected i think obama really is his back is to the wall the economy's down and he needs every vote he can get it doesn't look good for him to get reelected right now so i think we'll see him tilt toward israel heavily here in this the rest of this year and next year before the election despite its stance towards the u.n. did the u.n. the u.s.
3:11 pm
is giving money to both israel and to the palestinians do you think there is a way for washington to keep this balancing act between the two sides after a possible vote. well it's not really a balanced policy that gives aid to both but the. aid to the palestinians is dwarfed by the three billion dollars that military aid that the us gives to israel so and in fact. the netanyahu the israeli prime minister just intervened with the with the republican congress to get them to pass the palestinian aid because that goes to police officers that works with the peace in the west bank so i think even israel is for that palestinian aid but it's a it's a trickle compared to the flood that israel gets in military aid traditionally before the iraq war israel was the biggest. city in a foreign aid by far than the country and it's a fairly wealthy country so. this is this is based on domestic politics
3:12 pm
in the united states and has very little to do with u.s. national security right and for that they leave it there ivan eland from the independent institute think tank thanks for joining us. the u.s. is israel's major supporter at the u.n. and its backing but is backing for the arab spring threatens to leave its main middle east ally in isolation the u.s. got behind the muslim movement for democracy but the new regime in egypt has left israel picking up the pieces of its broken former relations with the country or he's and he's on our way has more from cairo. democracy has a price people these are spoken. their voices have been heard and egypt will never be the same and the new egypt embraced as a positive example of change in the arab world by the west is not the only one paying what they. think as. you know during the
3:13 pm
earlier times there was a bit of security but now there is less security on the streets israel has also been left hanging a slow road to stability in neighboring egypt mixed with a massively unpopular israeli foreign policy makes a dangerous cocktail that pays for change towards those disputation was very slow so you have a lot of frustration on one side and then you have a lot of anger that. exacerbated after the killing of the five egyptian soldiers on egyptian territory by israeli gunfire. taking up the situation even further the recent attack on the israeli embassy in cairo protesters threw stones and stormed the building as military police stood by and watched for hours three demonstrators were killed and over a thousand injured michelle but still this situation can get worse for israel not for us which is starting to get stronger this is not a negative thing for us but
3:14 pm
a plus. for a protester who took down the israeli flag at the embassy in august was hailed as egypt's new super hero flagman the world wasn't built to protect the embassy but completely destroyed by protesters. this is what remains i doubt that but everything that behind all repercussion of emergency right is now being enforced here in egypt suffocating it's already asserted freedom and in the region he was a strong ally in facing security threats as this new democracy is stuck in a spiral of uncertainty instability and sometimes chaos. benjamin netanyahu called the incident a near disaster being averted might have a lot more work to do to avoid catastrophe in the future israel should worry about look at what's happening in turkey and egypt two very important states in the area which will have not only peace but friendship with israel they will be at odds with
3:15 pm
israel and its number one friend seems to be having trouble keeping a balance when it comes to promoting arab democracy and protecting israel's security it must occur to me and you know me and others at this point that certainly the americans are holding me. have all the cards up their sleeve so so i think that something that must weigh heavily on on israel because when it comes down to with the u.s. tends to protect one thing in the end the basic problem here i think with americans and with the western civilization in general the way they're handling things is that it's become too much about interests not not really about humanity or about anything else it's really become about interests and when interest is the main driver of things become messy and egypt could become a mess that israel will have to live with and he's now a r.t. kyra. plenty more stories on our website r.t.

progress and reducing debt investment advisor patrick young thinks the greek economy is basically going down the drain. greece is now in such a debt spiral that it's really well it's like one of those world war one if the asian films that we've all seen where when they get the tail of the fighter suddenly goes down in flames firing into the ground unfortunately there's nothing the greeks can do at the moment until they've had a really really gruesome economic shock if they're going to maintain themselves in the euro and i personally that they really can attend themselves in europe because they don't think the greek people are prepared for the fall and their cost of everything you know that the overall standard of living because it's absolutely horrific we're on the verge of seeing and witnessing in our lifetime the death of the west as a prosperous economic entity they've been in the ascendant provide hundred years and now after two hundred fifty years old basically being at the absolute peak of

factors in mind then why hasn't the man's convict why has the man's conviction been consistently up held by the u.s. courts. the only thing that i can say about it is that this is happening this is happened before and also what i really like and so i don't know how much time we have today but it still it's not too late i just phone president obama and left a message there they are taking messages about troy davis and i let them know that i will not be voting for president obama and if he gets not go ahead and start this and this atrocity that it's bad reflection on him it's a bad reflection on the entire. country every day every american and it puts every american at risk if this can happen to troy davis it could happen to anybody and the fact that he's been tortured for twenty years and that's what being in solitary confinement is is it is something else it's just another violation that the united
