it's eleven pm in moscow i match reza good to have you with us here on r t our top story the showdown over palestinian statehood set to dominate the u.n. general assembly and play out on the streets of new york the majority of the international community including russia is ready to support the bid but the u.s. says a palestinian state can only be achieved through dialogue with israel for more on this we're joined by our marine important ally york hello marina so where does the issue over palestinian statehood stand at this moment. at this moment the palestinians are still moving forward with their campaign for u.n. membership now this is despite the speech that was given by u.s. president barack obama obama addressed the international community saying that peace in the middle east can only come from direct negotiations between the palestinians and the israelis and the kind of statements or resolutions from the
3:02 pm
united nations would help a peace agreement obama encouraged all members of the general assembly to talk to the palestinians and the israelis and convince them to get back to the negotiation table as you mentioned the majority of u.n. members do support the palestinian bid for u.n. membership and statehood but the u.s. has publicly said it would be to go this move if it had to would cast a veto and that would all lock the palestinians from becoming members of the united nations now russian foreign minister sergei lavrov did speak with the press saying that of course direct negotiations is what is wanted but the u.s. should not use its veto to block the aspirations of the palestinians or of any other country so at this point the u.s. by casting a veto risks losing support in credibility among the arab world because remember president obama supported the tunisians the egyptians the libyans during the arab
3:03 pm
spring he has spoken out in support of those that are are demonstrating against the leaders of syria and he also mentioned last year that he supports an independent and sovereign palestine so now to turn around and do something different and not stand by his words he's actually facing a quite a conundrum. away the both sides get out of the situation with these. well that is the discussions that are taking place on the sidelines of the general assembly the u.s. president did meet privately with the israeli prime minister but. driven to yahoo and he will be meeting with the palestinian president president mahmoud abbas and from what we are being told there are plans in place to prevent any kind of diplomatic train wreck and that plan would be for the palestinian president to officially submit a letter to the security council asking for u.n. membership but the security council wouldn't vote on it right away this would allow
3:04 pm
a little leverage it would allow time for the mideast quartet which is the european union russia the u.s. and the u.n. to try to convince israel and palestine to get back to the negotiation table and this way it doesn't put anybody in a bad position because if there's a vote in the general assembly israel will likely be isolated if the u.s. casts a veto it will face heavy criticism on among the arab world but if the president of palestine backs away from this campaign he could face heavy criticism from all the palestinians and all of the states around the world that are supporting his campaign for u.n. membership so right now there are talks about how everyone can get out of this saving face but as of now people are working round the clock to see how the story will develop right and so will we are to use merida live for us in new york thanks for that report. thousands of palestinians are marching across the west bank to support their will be moved to win recognition for their state at the u.n. there's an atmosphere of jubilation as government services and schools were closed
3:05 pm
to allow people on to the streets to demonstrate or to use policy or has more. it's being high so it's right across the west bank is this to make sure that some twenty thousand people have taken to the streets of ramallah people took off work the schools closed early immediately businesses shut down on standing and all manav which is really the focal point of the milo and in this area the businesses the shops of the restaurants have been opened so that people can really celebrate what most economists atmosphere now this does to kickstart three days of peaceful demonstrations of the palestinians on the stocks that they will be folding in the run up to the palestinian president mahmoud abbas making their third on friday for statehood at the united nations we've seen it coming at such celebrations across the west bank in hebron there were an estimated seventeen thousand people turning out because he's in carnivals today and some of the scenes unfolding in bethlehem and in nablus they wanted to isolated incidents of violence that did change it will
3:06 pm
have the potential to modern day one in kalandia checkpoint not far from here it was also a little bit of violence in hebron the both of those have been built under control and the people i've been talking to say that not only do they have a commitment to holding peaceful demonstrations but certainly they have a commitment to making sure that this historic moment on the world stage is seen and felt by everyone in the international community for the israeli army certainly has been preparing for violence but what many say is that the most in this paper ration it's almost encouraging if one can say that the violence has happened for the simple months israeli army has been undergoing an operation called operation from the scene and this is all this fear that these peaceful demonstrations of the palestinians say they will fold could erupt into stained into violence but their eyes not only on the palestinians the israeli army also has they i meet roughly hossam many an israeli state is just yesterday there were a number of demonstrations by israeli states and across the west bank in the states as themselves adamant that they will not allow the palestinians to do what they say
3:07 pm
take over days and now we are hearing initial rumors that some kind of deal has been. struck behind the scenes we do not have confirmation we do not have the details yet but what we do understand is that the palestinian president mahmoud abbas might on friday the bill of making his bid for statehood but instead of asking for the boat to happen at the same time he might today that until potentially some time next year if indeed this is the case it means that america can and is waiting on the palestinians has come to basically close to some extent. more perspective on this i'm joined by ivan eland from the independent independent institute think tank which focuses on educational and social causes thank you for being with us so we're going into the homestretch what do you think we can expect to happen on friday. well it's hard to say of course but it seems like abbas has been using this as a for leverage to get the negotiations going again between israel and the palestinians and that's you know that's what this is all about the palestinians
3:08 pm
have been denied for a long time. i think honest negotiations about getting their territory back from israel and israel keeps encroaching on laying and increasing the settlements which is of course against international law to occupy. and develop territory that you've conquered militarily so i think this is this is sort of a desperation move on his part to get more leverage to try to get negotiations going in to try to get you know the two state solution and he was going to the u.n. i think that they've given more leverage over the process now whether he'll take it to a vote or take it to this compromise which you just mentioned. delaying the vote next year giving more time for the go she ations but that would still give him leverage
3:09 pm
to come back next year and. you know have that hanging over the negotiations so he might be able to get a better deal or to get israel to agree to more more concessions with that with the vote in the future hanging over their over both parties heads turning domestically president obama is headed for reelection in two thousand and twelve how do you think his policy towards the israeli palestinian conflict is going to sit with the american voters. well i think it's not necessarily with the american voters don't pay much attention to it there are certain groups in the united states that pay a lot of attention to its jewish voters which have been a big bedrock of the democratic party and in one nine hundred forty eight when it looked like harry truman was going to lose he he recognize israel eleven minutes after it provocatively. declared its independence which the arabs didn't want and so he famously said well i have no arab constituents but i have
3:10 pm
a lot of people who are for a zionist i'm i'm paraphrasing there but and i think obama is in the same. boat he's a democratic president and now i think both parties the fundamentalist christians are also big proponents of israel on the republican side so i think it's even more locked up than it was in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight when harry truman had to do that for it to get reelected or did it in part to get reelected i think obama really is his back is to the wall the economy's down and he needs every vote he can get it doesn't look good for him to get reelected right now so i think you'll see him tilt toward israel heavily here in this the rest of this year and next year before the election despite its stance towards the u.n. bid the u.n. the u.s. is giving money to both israel and to the palestinians do you think there is a way for washington to keep this balancing act between the two sides after a possible vote. well it's not really
3:11 pm
a balanced policy that gives aid to both but that the aid to the palestinians is dwarfed by the three billion dollars that military aid the us gives to israel so and in fact. the netanyahu the israeli prime minister just intervened with the with the republican congress to get them to pass the palestinian aid because that goes to police officers that works with the peace in the west bank so i think even israel is for that palestinian aid but it's a it's a trickle compared to the flood that israel gets in military aid traditionally before the iraq war israel was the biggest city in the foreign aid by far than the country and it's a fairly wealthy country so. this is this is based on domestic politics in the united states and has very little to do with the u.s. national security but unfortunately have to leave it there ivan eland from the

independent institute a think tank thanks for joining us. the u.s. is israel's major supporter at the un and it's backing them but is backing for the arab spring threatens to leave its main middle east ally in isolation the u.s. got behind the muslim movement for democracy but the new regime in egypt has left israel picking up the pieces of its broken former relations with the country or he's an isa now it has more from cairo. democracy has a price the people of egypt have spoken. their voices have been heard and egypt will never be the same and the new egypt embraced as a positive example of change in the arab world by the west is not the only one paying for what they did with the evolution bring us you know life during the earlier times there was a bit of security but now there's this security on the streets israel has also been left hanging a slow road to stability in neighboring egypt mixed with the massively unpopular
3:13 pm
israeli foreign policy makes a dangerous cocktail. that pays for change towards those disputation was very slow so you had a lot of frustration on one side and then you had a lot of anger that. exacerbated after the killing of the five protection soldiers on egyptian territory by israeli gunfire. shaking up the situation even further the recent attack on the israeli embassy in cairo protesters threw stones and stormed the building as military police stood by and watched for hours three demonstrators were killed and over a thousand injured. mission that's not this situation can get worse for israel not for us which is starting to get stronger this is not a negative thing for us but a plus. for the protester who took down the israeli flag at the embassy in august was hailed as egypt's new super hero flagman
3:14 pm
a wall was then built to protect the embassy but completely destroyed by protesters . this is what remains are about that but ever come up behind our republic my shelves emergency law is now being enforced here in egypt suffocating it's already served freedom and in the region the u.s. is strongest ally the security threats as this new democracy is stuck in a spiral of certainty instability and sometimes chaos. benyamin netanyahu called the incident a near disaster being averted might have a lot more work to do to avoid catastrophe in the future israel should worry about look at what's happening in to give egypt two very important states in the area which used to have not only peace but friendship with israel today be at odds with israel and its number one friend seems to be having trouble keeping a balance when it comes to promoting arab democracy and protecting israel security
3:15 pm
it must occur to netanyahu and others at this point that certainly the americans are holding the at the v.a. says and have all the cards up their sleeve so so i think that is something that must weigh heavily on on israel at this point because when it comes down to with the u.s. tends to protect one thing in the end the basic problem you know i think with the americans and with the western civilization kennington or all the way they're handling things is that it's become too much about interests not about the humanity or about anything else it's really become about interests and and when interest is the main driver that things become messy and egypt could become a mass that israel will have to live with and he's now a r t cairo. plenty more stories on our website r.t. dot com here's what's a click away right now. sporting hero and the st you're not a mr nations of an ice hockey player who died alongside his teammates in

a debt spiral that it's really well it's like one of those world war one aviation films that we've all seen where when they get the tail of the fighter suddenly he goes down the flames far really get into the ground unfortunately there's nothing the greeks can do at the moment until they've had a really really gruesome economic shock if they're going to maintain themselves in the euro and i personally don't know that they really can maintain themselves in the euro because i don't think the greek people are prepared for the fall in their cost of everything you mean the overall standard of living because it's absolutely horrific we are on the verge of seeing i'm witnessing in our lifetime the death of the west as a prosperous economic and they've been in the ascendant for five hundred years and knowing after two hundred fifty years old basically being at the absolute p. . of their powers we see a situation where it glee is crashing and burning it too has no tangible political leadership silvio berlusconi unfortunately has ended up looking like them ability

in office and the people are rest of their not willing to take the cuts that they need to balance the budget the u.s. state of georgia is preparing to execute a death row inmate using lethal injection for the one nine hundred eighty nine murder of an off duty policeman the state has denied to file a final appeal for clemency for troy davis on the eve of his execution no murder weapon was ever found and no d.n.a. evidence or fingerprints conclusively linked to davis to the shooting the majority of witnesses have also since changed their testimony more than a million people worldwide signed petitions for clemency amnesty international said georgia has discredited the justice system and may end the life of an innocent man for more on this i'm joined by deborah dupré a journalist human rights activist thank you for joining us so troy davis is due to be executed executed shortly with some questions i am going over his guilt and worldwide pleas from supporters to overturn the conviction what's your take on this . i agree with human rights advocates all over the world that this is
3:19 pm
unconscionable that the georgia board of hardness and paroles has denied relief to troy davis that sending a man to death under such doubt about his guilt is just an out and ready just a front to justice and it's also a prime example why rights defenders like ward riley and gave this once it's clear headed the october two thousand and eleven movement to occupy washington d.c. to stop the corrupt us machine because the justice system is such a cute integral part of that and it seems like it's defending criminals and persecuting innocent people such as it's targeted individual troy davis davis has been blocked from taking a polygraph test before the execution his supporters point to absence of forensic evidence on the fact of several witnesses change their testimonies but with these factors in mind then why hasn't the man's convict why has the man's conviction been consistently up held by the u.s. courts. the only thing that i can say about it is that this is happening this is
3:20 pm
happened before and also what i'd really like to emphasize that i know how much time we had the day but it still is not too late i just fun president obama and left a message there they are taking messages about troy davis and i let them know that i will not be voting for president obama again if he does not go ahead and stop this this atrocity that it's bad reflection on him it's a bad reflection on the entire. country every every american and it puts every american at risk if this can happen to troy davis it could happen to anybody and the fact that he's been tortured for twenty years and that's what being in solitary confinement is is is something else it's just another violation that the united states is committing we have one hundred thousand people tortured and i'm sorry to jump in here but i do want to press you on this why do you think then if there is
3:21 pm
so much evidence to the contrary here that the courts did consistently apel his conviction and the eventual death penalty here i really cannot answer that i cannot speculate at certainly thought about it and it just wouldn't be right for me to i don't think to speculate on that at the moment but there's no good reason that there's no good reason that any of us know of for this. ok the u.s. is one of the few nations that does still in force the death penalty with plenty of support for the notion of the punishment fitting the crime and executions acting as a crime target what do you think is the future of capital punishment in the u.s. it's to me it's one of the most serious human rights violations that the united states is committing. on a regular basis and the people who are. committed to get this

have been in solitary confinement as i said we have a hundred thousand people on death row that's making and it's big business for the prison industry one hundred thousand people are being tortured daily by being in solitary confinement and then the final execution it's just an atrocity that this country should be leading the world in showing that we do not do this all right to do pray journalist he or a human rights activist thanks for your perspective thank you very much. take a look now at some other stories making headlines across the globe violence broke out between police and immigrants fleeing an overcrowded holding center on the italian island of lampedusa officers in riot gear used clubs against detain refugees making a break for freedom the island was overwhelmed by more than forty thousand tunisians and libyans fleeing unrest back home. to americans jailed in iran on charges of spying have been freed after two years behind bars and are now on
