all right it's time for you said i read it time to respond to my brilliance engaging viewer comments from facebook twitter and you tube and you've got something to say i listen now first i would respond to a viewer who watched my interview with dean baker about obama's deficit reduction plan and accusations by republicans that obama is waging class warfare mastermind x. it on you tube class warfare is ok for republicans as long as the rich are winning and you don't see interesting how that works yesterday we told you about the increasing poverty rates in the united states and more than forty six million people now living below the poverty line all that all bank profits of increased since the crash twenty eleven in fact mark the highest quarterly profit by f.d.i.c banks in america since two thousand and seven and so that the figure the richest
6:32 pm
one percent now owns at least twenty four percent of the entire country's wealth and yet looks like there's been a class war going on it's just the poor who are losing the inequality continues to grow in the united states and poverty reaches new highs you never hear republicans from planning about the class war being waged on the poor do you so i would say that our viewer here is right or publicans have no problem with class war as long as the rich are the ones winning the next one responder a viewer who watched our interview on for profit colleges making a killing on the g.i. bill and marketing to veterans and jealousy wrote to one said the soldiers got used and abused by military industrial complex and the second time by college industrial complex people need to stop trusting the profiteering plutocracy now you know it really is sad and true but after over a decade of perpetual war waged by the united states those serving in our armed forces are often the ones that suffer the most whether it be through repeat deployments inadequate help for p.t.s.d. veterans bear the brunt of our foreign policy which is what makes this latest story so frustrating the pentagon sees three willing to let for profit colleges take
6:33 pm
advantage of those better it's giving them a poor education at a high price so it's high time to panic and step up and say that enough is enough. stop letting these schools market your veterans on basis start educating them about what a poor profit education really means and lastly i want to respond to a kind viewer who watched our coverage of the occupy wall street protests that's happening right now in new york city docks a tube said alone and never quite exposing the m.s.m. you rock girl because you tell the truth i want to thank you for the encouragement and say once again that i first and foremost see our role as being that to cover and expose important stories of the mainstream media chooses for whatever reason not to cover it we've been will continue to cover the occupy wall street movement we've been monitoring the twitter feeds of both anon ops and occupy wall street and we've seen a lot of people very disappointed at the level of coverage given to the protests in the media so i can assure you that while c.n.n. fox and even m s n b c of almost totally ignored this entire movement we covered every day will continue to cover it because we think it's an important story the
6:34 pm
needs to be told to keep watching it will keep bringing you the latest on occupy wall street and it's in my rantings that abraham will be back with more as usual next week. all right so now it's tell you more updates on occupy wall street the peaceful protests taking place new york's financial district has now reached its fifth day occupy wall street started out with about two thousand people go over the past couple of days those numbers have dwindled down to a few hundred over those voices who are occupying what they've dubbed liberty park and making sure that everybody knows why they're there they want everyone to know about the growing disparity between the one percent of america and the rest of the ninety nine percent who are struggling whether they're unemployed or working two or three jobs they continue chanting we are the ninety nine as they march and despite bloomberg initially welcoming the protesters in their cars a few had run ins with the police. thank.
6:35 pm
god. approximately twelve people have already been arrested and some of those arrests have been violent as we showed you yesterday others have been arrested for smaller crimes things like having a bullhorn having two or more people in the same area wearing a guy fawkes mask and another was arrested for damage to the sidewalk after he scribbled a gandhi quote with a piece of chalk board this protest has spread in large part through social media the hashtag occupy wall street has been gaining a lot of traction despite the fact that the mainstream media has yet to mention it when email service was even stopping its ads at spreading the word on occupy wall street yesterday think progress or they had time to send an email from their yahoo yahoo account with the words occupy wall street got or get the message when they tried to send a message they got an error message the read the following it said your message was
6:36 pm
not sent suspicious activity has been detected on your account to protect your account and our users your message has not been sent. email sent with the words occupy wall street or occupy wall street dot org those are being caught in spam filters and blocked yahoo has stated that this was not on purpose they issued an apology and they thanked me in progress for attaching the issue but as privacy blogger julian sanchez points out this is still a case of legitimate political speech being blocked by yahoo due to a faulty algorithm so it's left an fix it could be taken advantage of in the future and will yahoo's inadvertently censoring protestors mainstream media is choosing to turn a blind eye to the small but very important efforts almost completely but don't worry because what those networks choose to overlook because the stories that we feel are the most important to share. now you guys ready for a new vocabulary word so they better reserve chairman ben bernanke he announced that announced that operation twist is going into effect and that means the fed is
6:37 pm
going to move the money in its nearly one point seven trillion dollars portfolio government bonds from short term securities into long term securities and here's a strategy that was used in the sixty's during the kennedy administration it's meant to lower young long term yields which determines the interest rate which means in theory rates on mortgages and other consumer and business loans will go down a move brought markets down and it's one that republican lawmakers are in opposition to as even before the fed made this announcement word spread that a letter had been sent by john boehner and mitch mcconnell last night to ben bernanke the urging him to resist efforts to lower interest rates so clearly this has become very political but when it comes to the economy is it going to work here discusses in our studio in new york is joe weisenthal deputy editor of the business insider want to thank you for joining us tonight and for starters you tell me if i did an ok job when it came to explaining what operation twist is anything that you want to add to my mission originally been. you explained it exactly right the fed
6:38 pm
isn't changing the size of its balance sheet it's a change in the company's composition as you said selling short and treasury bonds buying the long and and helping to push down interest rates and you've got a history right exactly was first done under that kind of the administration so you explained it perfectly happy to hear that but ok so we're hopeful that there you know what they're hoping will happen here is that maybe people would be able to refinance their mortgages if these long term interest rates go down but when it comes to other investors they think that they might actually ditch the government bonds they might go for some riskier assets. that is exactly a view idea i mean one is the idea if you make bonds less and less attractive then you radically investors who would otherwise hold bonds might go into stark's lift the stock market up again which is slumping or who knows maybe even actually make loans or do more risky you know buy riskier bonds to help companies finance their operations so that's one idea and then there is this hope that if we keep pushing
6:39 pm
interest rates down you know people get a mortgage refinance save money but then it's a little bit hard to swallow given the interest rates just keep plummeting it hasn't done anything for mortgages effect mortgage applications are basically continuing to fall and the reason is with house prices falling and with people in too much debt it doesn't really matter home cheap to make loans people just aren't going to borrow more so the theory works better than the practice and better so why not the other idea and see the fact that you know you want people to go for these riskier assets that maybe have the short term benefits to them is that good or bad every kind of going back to the bad practices a ring not investing in more long term projects you know that might help the future . it's mixed and i think you could make it an argument in both directions theoretically there is this transmission mechanism whereby if you can boost the stock market people feel wealthier oh they are wealthier
6:40 pm
a bit will spend more in them that has a positive effect on the economy both bernie and his predecessor greenspan basically subscribe to that idea that the stock market just extremely important economic factor in itself on the other hand during the last during q e two we saw rises you know in commodities to the extent of the fed moves is inflation that has a negative effect on the real economy due to higher gas prices higher input costs as costs for everything so it's a real mixed bag and the fact is simple the economy is in a word shape today in terms of potential to dive into a recession than it was last summer before q.e. two so it's just not clear that the fed has any really good options at this point or that traditional or that stimulus tools can do much of anything but something become pretty clear here about ben bernanke and the type of fed chairman that he is i mean there was you know we had quantitative easing now it seems like he's still just can't sit still this is somebody who wants to act and who wants to be
6:41 pm
aggressive. absolutely and this is actually at the central this is the maybe the defining aspect of bernie's entire career the burning of a student of the great depression and sort of all his career he's focused on this back that in the great depression and also in japan sloan this idea that the central bank and government officials said on their hands didn't do enough so it his core he believes it never stops moving never stop trying always do more stuff i think you could argue that actually since he's got to be the fed chair and with the political push back he probably hasn't done as much as he might have as a younger ben bernanke you might have encouraged him to do but yes. absolutely i think he's always going to keep trying things to avoid deflation an ongoing recession but then what do we think of the fact that john boehner that mitch mcconnell decided to send ben bernanke he this letter last night urging him you
6:42 pm
know not to lower interest rates any further i mean for starters is that unprecedented or you know used to be that the federal reserve is supposed to be nonpolitical is supposed to be so far removed and now it seems to me like they're setting up almost a threatening message me it is after all we're gearing up for another campaign for two thousand and twelve if a republican might take the executive branch or they might take congress are they signaling to him that he might be in trouble that they might try to run you know what to the central bank in the future. yeah the extent to which the fed itself has become a political football is definitely one of the big stories of the year. perry's famously in already infamously said that then further easing might constitute something treasonous but even before that you had politicians talking about wanting to review the fed's mandate maybe taking away the mandate of full employment and just having them focus on. price stability so this is been building for a while and yesterday is letter was basically on president did
6:43 pm
a request to the fed you know to not engage in a certain kind of monetary policy they basically fed independence is dead when you have politicians demanding things like that or threatening to change things although putatively the fed is making these decisions and not answering to anyone if what if their decisions kind of existentially threaten the future of the fed or you know will get congress to change the laws of the fed and to some extent fed of fed independence is already over i want to thank you for joining us tonight and had an opinion for that at the line thank you thank you. i still ahead tonight he's been targeted by gay activists for his hateful comments for years now his presidential candidate wants to censor the web to clear his name going to be more of that thanks to all times that they had a happy hour now everybody is pleased with ben and jerry's twenty dollars ice cream flavor plus a campaign ad by rick perry that's
6:44 pm
a little bit over the fact. that only a military mechanisms if you don't work to bring justice or. i have every right to know what my government should do if you want to know why i pay taxes. i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so sleep you think you understand it and then you did something else here so you saw the part of it and realized everything you saw. i'm trying hard look at the big picture.
6:45 pm
6:46 pm
all right time for tonight's tool time award and tonight because g.o.p. presidential candidate rick santorum now as we've discussed on this show before rick has a little bit of a google problem case you aren't aware of santorum has been hounded by gay rights groups since of two thousand and three or march rate compare the legalization of gay sex and gay marriage to pedophilia b.c. ality and incest now to get even a gay rights activist created definition for the word santorum and then place it on a website i can't really give you the definition on t.v. but you can google it and find out yourself so back in june rick was asked about his google problem and emmett and n.b.c. and this was his response. well you know. the it comes with the territory when
6:47 pm
you're out there unfortunately there are people out there who do do horrible things of my and i responsible it is to go out and and talk about the issues that i care about i it's unfortunate that some people thought that they would be a big joke to to make fun of my name. you know i totally agree with rick it's vile to make fun of people and say crazy things about the but that's what rick santorum did when he said gave marriage is going to lead to man and dogs having sex so this week we learned that rick reached out to the company to see if something could be done about it now google said sorry can't help you rick and of course after being told no rick then played the g.o.p. victim card an all time favorite for the party he told politico i suspect if something was out there like that about joe biden they'd get rid of it and then went on to say if you're responsible business you let things like that happen in your business that have an impact on the country wait stop or think it impact on the country somebody calls you out for being a bigot and has an impact on the country not to mention your rick santorum you're
6:48 pm
not joe biden most people don't even know who you are they don't care about the dirty things have been written about you or your last name so let's just take a few steps back down to reality now shall we now rick was also colder than politico as saying so how to business allow that type of filth to be purveyed through their website or through their system is something that they say they can't handle but i suspect that's not true well guess what rick actually you are wrong tech blogs today were in a flurry discussing rick's requests and i believe that rick's name was just google back in two thousand and three so that's and so he creates a web site followers then links to that web site and that raises the site's ranking on google's search rank algorithm but the blog feeling else says that's not what happened here a google software engineer told the site the santorum phenomenon is actually called the search engine optimisation so basically that happens with h.t.m.l. code links images and words are used online to drive rankings on google so basically every time that rick brings out the subject he says keeping the term
6:49 pm
alive on google it just makes the definition more and more relevant to searches about him every single time he complains about it so thanks rick i'm sure that it's all just part of the gay jihad against you it's really. very good. for you to be out here. and the born there. oh there are already. you know there's one simple way to end rick santorum is google problem gay rights activist dan savage who created the santorum definition says that he will take down the site when rick donates five million dollars to the freedom to marry organization that supports marriage equality so for now rick santorum the balls are in your court pun intended but are trying to censor something you don't like and way overestimating your importance of the country we're going to give you tonight's all time award.
6:50 pm
i have time for happy hour joining me tonight is our team producer jenny churchill and tanya solomon a hair reporter and blogger for think progress dot org thanks for joining me guys i say that right to try to better elevator ok just making sure. it's first starters that it's campaign season and you know there just are just are so many of these epic ads coming out and it's going really really love them and like the high production quality so now rick perry has won and it's very epic take a look you're in the right direction. the single job. there.
6:51 pm
ok so the guy that used to do tim pawlenty really the same producers apparently now working on. with rick perry to do which i think you can probably tell the styles are pretty similar but i just i mean. job zero jobs so pocalypse the world is coming to an end of course i mean he didn't go as far as ron paul calling himself the one. but of course rick perry is the only one who can save us from from our impending doom right i mean it's a box office hit right i mean i've seen this movie before it ends with a big wall street crash i mean mrs bush i mean perry is practically bush all over again so why not have a sequel in sequel form what's really interesting i did notice the same guy that did this video and did plenty of video also did a video for hillary clinton when she was running again actually i watched it and
6:52 pm
it's like the same style not as i have back ready that's when i said i was like i have to see this it's not anywhere near as that but however i swear if you just put rick perry in everything except for the female stuff i mean it's the same stuff we're dealing with the same problems it was actually sad i felt like i was stuck in some like vertigo time machine that's because we're still screwed enough you really have presidential election was going on wonderful wonderful. ok this next one it all comes a saturday night live skit so first. you know where this controversy is stemming from the expanding controversy. no speak old machine. can i touch your posts. it's the
6:53 pm
guy's name or alec baldwin dave was supposed to be. and they were time has sure the balls so ben and jerry's because they actually have a sense of humor decided to create an ice cream flavor in college what he balls and now one million dogs this is an affiliate of the american family association they are just really really pissed about this they wrote a really long letter where they by the way describe the entire s n l skit is like really good incredible detail i think they repeated shorty balls more times than they needed to do it was ok with it and then they went on to talk about in jerry's how they've done these things before and talked about when they called an ice cream flavor chubby hubby called buddy which celebrated gay marriage they say it seems that offending customers become an annual tradition for ben and jerry's. going to get a break seriously. however i'm super excited because the story did lead to some of the most amazing headlines i've ever seen mike so why do you balls leaves dirty
6:54 pm
taste in angry moms mouth. i mean this is a great opportunity though right good i mean if they don't like this maybe this opens a line of alternative christian ice cream like i don't know rocky road to damascus or you know marcus bachmann's xscape therapy crunch something you know something about bacon or. let people you can have your question ice cream let people have their ice cream that actually has a sense of humor and refers to pop culture and jerry's as good as he likes so pathetic because there are so many things that they can actually be concerned about that wouldn't be legitimized their causes they have to go over it like an ice cream flavor however i do think i'd be super awkward if your child was like daddy i want child. balls i want to show people that's really a very very very very small tiny insignificant victory on also greatly doesn't it he should be out for a little while it doesn't taste good as that some guy because it has like chocolate covered brown balls or something like that and maybe really good to get a really just get it doesn't taste good maybe if you're good and i think that's
6:55 pm
what they're going for. speaking of things like that maybe you know your kid seeing this is actually totally different is your kids might end up on it but read it you still have it being called jailbait on the website where they every picture is under age girls are saying you know as young as thirteen years old looking sexy or whatever and that went away for a little while and people thought maybe it's because condi nast which i read it had a problem with the but now it turns out that jailbait came back as of september first what do you say i mean it's kind of it's kind of the kiddie porn i'm sure there are girls under thirteen years old that all sexualized and they're saying it's a matter of freedom of speech but this is where you know you ok i'm sorry that there are matters of freedom of speech over kiddy porn is not one of them that's apparently is the kiddie porn because people are clothed i'm like at this moment mesmerized by the graphic we just showed because one of the titles to the photos was my little cousin and that's so disturbing. cleavage only
6:56 pm
you can also do no photos with tattoos are allowed because then that's proving that the person's progress are saying that you have to be eighteen years old to get a tattoo that's even more sick this makes it like you know parent getting their twelve year old tatted up it's like parental kindness now you know it's preservation of your child to like attach he put away about you from those who want you to read it crowd. ok now really quickly if your car gets lost in the service out there they can help you with it but they also my friends you know your privacy a little bit but first let me tell you we're talking about. mike your car is gone where is your car. kirsten's. all right so if you want on star if you pay for the service then that's a great big but turns out i have a new privacy policy that's going to debut in december and basically they're saying that even if you cancel your subscription on star they're going to keep monitoring
