10:30 pm
first. let me get if we get an apartheid right. i think either one well. whatever the government says they're going to keep you safe get ready for freedom.
10:31 pm
all right it's time for you say i read it or take time to respond in my brilliance engaging to your comments from facebook twitter and you tube and you've got something to say i listen now first i want respond to a viewer who watched my interview with dean baker about obama's deficit reduction plan and the accusations by republicans that obama is waging class warfare mastermind x. it on you tube class warfare is ok for republicans as long as the rich are winning and you know it's interesting how that works yesterday we told you about the increasing poverty rates in the united states of more than forty six million people now living below the poverty line all that while bank profits have increased since the crash twenty eleven in fact mark the highest quarterly profit by f.b.i. c. banks in america since two thousand and seven add to that the figure of the richest
10:32 pm
one percent now owns at least twenty four percent of the entire country sloth and yeah it looks like there's been a class war going on it's just the poor who are losing so inequality continues to grow in the united states and poverty reaches new highs and never hear republicans complaining about that class war being waged on the poor do you so i would say that our viewer here is right republicans have no problem with class war as long as the rich are the ones winning the next don't respond to a viewer who watched our interview on for profit colleges making a killing for the g.i. bill and marketing to veterans and jealousy roach who once said soldiers got used and abused by the military industrial complex and the second time by college industrial complex people need to stop trusting the profiteering plutocracy now you know really is sad and true but after over a decade of perpetual war waged by the united states those serving in our armed forces are often the ones that suffer the most whether it be through repeat deployments inadequate help for p.t.s.d. that are ins bear the brunt of our foreign policy which is what makes this latest story so frustrating the pentagon seems to be willing to let for profit colleges
10:33 pm
take advantage of those that are it's giving them a poor education at a high price so it's high time the pentagon step up and say that enough is enough. letting these schools market your veterans on base is start educating them about what are for profit education really means and lastly i want to respond to a kind viewer who watched our coverage of the occupy wall street protests that's happening right now in new york city docks a tube said alone never quit closing the m.s.m. you rock girl because you tell the truth i want to thank you for to encourage it and say once again that i first and foremost see our role as to being that to cover and expose important stories that the mainstream media chooses for whatever reason not to cover it we've been will continue to cover the occupy wall street movement we've been monitoring the twitter feeds of both anon off saying occupy wall street and we've seen a lot of people very disappointed at the level of coverage given to the protests in the media so i can assure you that while c.n.n. fox and even m s n b c of almost totally ignored this entire movement we've covered it every day will continue to cover it because we think it's an important story
10:34 pm
that needs to be told to keep watching it will keep bringing you the latest on occupy wall street and it's my rantings that will be back with more as usual next week. all right so now let's tell you more updates on occupy wall street the peaceful protests taking place new york's financial district has now reached its fifth day occupy wall street started out with about two thousand people but over the past couple of days those numbers have dwindled down to a few hundred over those voices who are occupying what they've dug liberty park and making sure that everybody knows why they're there they want everyone to know about the growing disparity between that one percent of america and the rest of the ninety nine percent that are struggling whether they're unemployed or working two or three jobs they continue chanting we are the ninety nine as they march and despite bloomberg initially welcoming the protesters in their cars a few have had run ins with the police. thank you.
10:35 pm
the god. of profited twelve people have already been arrested and some of those arrests have been violent as we showed you yesterday others have been arrested first smaller crimes things like having a bullhorn having two or more people in the same area wearing a guy fawkes mask and another was arrested for damage to the sidewalk after he scribbled a gandhi quote with a piece of chalk this protest has spread in large part through social media the hashtag occupy wall street has been gaining a lot of traction despite the fact that the mainstream media has yet to mention it one e-mail service was even stopping attempts at spreading the word on occupy wall street yesterday think progress or they attempted to send an email from their yahoo yahoo account with the words occupy wall street dot org in the message when they tried to send a message they got an error message they read the following it said your message
10:36 pm
was not sent suspicious activity has been detected on your account to protect your account and argues or your message has not been sent. email sent with the words occupy wall street or occupy wall street dot org those are being caught in spam filters and blocked yahoo has stated that this was not on purpose they issued an apology and they thanked think progress for trashing the issue but as privacy blogger julian sanchez points out this is still a case of legitimate political speech being blocked by yahoo due to a faulty average of so it's left and thinks it could be taken advantage of in the future and while yahoo's inadvertently censoring protestors mainstream media is choosing to turn a blind eye to the small but very important efforts almost completely but don't worry because what those networks choose to overlook those the stories that we feel are the most important to share. now you guys ready for a new vocabulary word today federal reserve chairman ben bernanke he announced that announced that operation twist is going into effect and that means the fed is going
10:37 pm
to move the money in its nearly one point seven trillion dollars portfolio government bonds for short term securities and to long term security and here's a strategy that was used in the sixty's during the kennedy administration it's meant to lower young long term yields which determines the interest rate which means in theory rates on mortgages and other consumer and business loans will go down on the move markets and it's one that republican lawmakers are in opposition to as even before the fed made this announcement word spread that a letter had been sent by john boehner and mitch mcconnell last night to ben bernanke urging him to resist efforts to lower interest rates so clearly this is become very political but when it comes to the economy is it going to work here to discuss it from our studio in new york is joe weisenthal deputy editor of the business insider joe i want to thank you for joining us tonight for starters you tell me if i did an ok job when it came to explaining what operation twist is anything that you want to add to my mission origination. you explained it exactly
10:38 pm
right the fed isn't changing the size of its balance sheet is changing the company composition as you said selling short and treasury bonds buying into long and and hoping to push down interest rates and you've got the history right exactly it was first done under the kennedy administration so you explained it perfectly happy to hear that but ok so what hopefully what they're you know what they're hoping will happen here is that maybe people be able to refinance their mortgages if these long term interest rates go down but when it comes to other investors they think that they might actually ditch the government bonds they might go for some riskier assets. that is exactly the idea i mean one is the idea if you make bonds less and less attractive then theoretically investors who would otherwise hold bungs might go into stocks lift the stock market up again which is slumping or who knows maybe even actually make loans or do more risky you know little by risk your bonds to help companies finance their operations so that's one idea and then
10:39 pm
there's this hope that if we keep pushing interest rates down you know people get a mortgage refinance and save money but they're a little bit hard to swallow given the interest rates just keep plummeting it hasn't done anything for mortgage gaps and that mortgage applications are basically continuing to fall and the reason is with house prices falling and with people in too much debt it doesn't really matter home cheap to make loans people just aren't going to borrow more so the theory works better than the practice and there's a lot about the other idea of the fact that you know you want people to go for these riskier assets that maybe have the short term medical that is that good or that every kind of going back to the bad practices of investing in more long term projects you know that might help in the future. it's mixed and i think you could make it an argument in both directions theoretically there is this transmission mechanism whereby if you can boost the stock market people feel wealthier they are
10:40 pm
wealthier bit they'll spend more and that has a positive effect on the economy both bernie and his predecessor greenspan basically subscribe to that idea that the stock market is an extremely important economic factor in itself on the other hand during the last during q e two we saw rises you know in commodities to the extent that the fed moves call it is inflation that has a negative effect on the real economy due to higher gas prices higher input costs as costs for everything so it's a real mixed bag and the fact is simple the economy is in a word shape today in terms of potential to dive into recession than it was last summer before q.e. two so it's just not clear that the fed has any really good options at this point or that traditional or that it stimulus tools can do much of anything but something become pretty clear here about ben bernanke and the type of fed chairman he is mean there was you know we had quantitative easing now it seems like he's still just
10:41 pm
can't sit still this is somebody who wants to act and who wants to be aggressive. absolutely and this is actually at the central this is the maybe the defining aspect of bringing these entire career to bringing the average student of the great depression and soul all his career he's focused on this fact that in the great depression and also in japan slump this idea that the central bank and government officials sat on their hands didn't do enough so that his core who believes it never stopped moving never stopped trying always do more stuff i think you could argue that actually since he's got to be the fed chair and with the political push back he probably hasn't done as much as he might have as a younger been grenade you might have encouraged him to do but yes. absolutely i think he's always going to keep trying things to avoid deflation an ongoing recession but then what do we think of the fact that john boehner that mitch mcconnell decided to send ben bernanke you this letter last night urging him not to
10:42 pm
lower interest rates any further i mean for starters is that president already you know used to be that the federal reserve is supposed to be nonpolitical is supposed to be so far removed and now it seems to me like they're setting up almost a threatening message me it is after all we're gearing up for another campaign for two thousand and twelve if republicans might take executive branch or if they might take congress are they signaling to him they might be in trouble that they might try to. do i god knows what to the central bank and i think eric. yeah the extent to which the fed itself has become a political football is definitely one of the big stories of the year. perry's famous already infamously said that then further easing might constitute something treasonous but even before that you had politicians talking about wanting to review the fed's mandate maybe taking away the mandate of full employment and just having them focus on. price stability so this is been building for
10:43 pm
a while and yesterday is letter was basically unprecedented a request to the fed you know to not engage in a certain kind of monetary policy they basically fed independence is dead when you have politicians demanding things like data threatening to change things although putatively the fed is making these decisions and not answering to anyone if what if their decisions kind of existentially threaten the future of the fed or you know will get congress to change laws of the fed then to some extent fed the fed independence is already over i'd tell him to thank you for joining us tonight. at ten and for that at the new line thank. thank you. all right still ahead tonight he's been targeted by gay activists for his hateful comments for years now his presidential candidate wants to censor the web to clear his name going to be more of that trifold time segment going to have a happy hour or anybody is pleased with ben and jerry's assured involves ice cream flavor as a campaign ad by rick perry that's
10:44 pm
a little bit over the track. into that only a military mechanisms do don't work to bring justice or accountability. i have every right to know what my government should do if you want to know why i pay taxes. but i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then you've lived something else here's some other part of it and realized everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm trying hard look at the big picture.
10:45 pm
let's not forget that we have an apartheid regime right now. i think. even one well. we have the government says they're going to keep you safe get ready because you give them their freedom.
10:46 pm
night's tools and award and i think it's a g.o.p. presidential candidate rick santorum as we've discussed on this show before break has a little bit of a google problem case you aren't aware of santorum has been hounded by gay rights groups since the two thousand and three or march we compare the legalization of gay sex in gay marriage to pedophilia b.c. ality and incest now to get even a gay rights activist created definition for the word santorum and then place it on a website i can't really give you the definition on t.v. but you can google it and find out yourself so back in june it rick was asked about his google problem and emmett and as i'm d.c. and this was his response. well you know look the new comes with the territory when
10:47 pm
you're out there unfortunate there are involved people out there who do do horrible things of my responsibility is to go out and and talk about the issues that i care about i it's unfortunate that some people thought that they would be a big joke to to make fun of my name. you know i totally agree with rick it's vital to make fun of people and say crazy things about the but that's what rick santorum did when he said a marriage is going to lead to men and dogs having sex so this week we learned that rick reached out to the company to see if something could be done about it now google says sorry can't help you rick and of course after being told no rick then played the g.o.p. victim card an all time favorite for the party he told politico i suspect if something was up there like that about joe biden they'd get rid of it and then went on to say if you're responsible business you'll let things like that happen in your business that have an impact on the country great. impact on the country somebody calls you out for being
10:48 pm
a bigot has an impact on the country not to mention you're rick santorum you're not joe biden most people don't even know who you are they don't care about the dirty things that have been written about you or your last name so let's just take a few steps back into reality now shall we now rick was also quoted in politico as saying to have a business allow that type of bill to be purveyed through their website or through their system is something that they say they can't handle but i suspect that's not true well guess what rick actually you are wrong tech blogs today were in a flurry discussing rick's requests and then i believe that rick's name was google bombed back in two thousand and three so that's when somebody creates a web site followers then links to that web site not raises the site's ranking on google's search rank algorithm but the blog filling alice says that's not what happened here a google software engineer told the site the santorum phenomenon is actually called the search engine optimization so basically that happens with h.t.m.l. code links images and words are used online to drive rankings on google so basically every time that rick brings up the subject he says keeping the term alive
10:49 pm
on google it just makes the definition more and more relevant to searches about him every single time he complains about it so thanks rick i'm sure that it's all just part of the gay jihad against you. and. he should carry. out here be. going to hold. oh ok. you know there's one simple way to end rick santorum is google problem he writes activists dan savage who created the santorum definition says that he will take down the site when rick donates five million dollars to the freedom to marry organization that supports marriage equality so for now rick santorum the balls are in your court pun intended but for trying to censor something you don't like and away overestimating your importance to the country we're going to give you tonight's rules on who are.
10:50 pm
our it's time for happy hour and joining me tonight is our team producer jenny churchill and tanya sama nader reporter and blogger for think progress dot org thanks for joining me guys i see that right jeffrey better elevator ok just making sure. it's first starters that it's campaigns and you know they're just they're just are so many of these i think ads coming out and i'm starting really really love them like the high production quality so now rick perry has won and it's very epic take a look we're on the right or. the single job. there.
10:51 pm
ok so the guy they used to do tim palmer entities really a big name producers working on. with perry to do these which i think you can probably tell the styles are pretty similar but i just i mean. job zero jobs so talk to live to the world is coming to an end of course i mean he didn't go as far as ron paul calling himself the one that will bring good of course rick perry is the only one that can save us from from our impending doom. i mean it's a box office hit right i mean i've seen this movie before it ends with a big wall street crash i mean this is bush i mean perry is practically bush all over again so why not have a sequel. what's really interesting i did notice the same guy that did this video and did plenty of video also did a video for hillary clinton when she was running again actually i watched it and
10:52 pm
it's like the same style not as i have bank ready that's what i said i was like and to see this it's not anywhere near as up and however i swear if you just put rick perry in everything except for the female stuff i mean it's the same stuff we're dealing with the same problems it was actually sadek like i was stuck in some like vertigo time machine yeah that's because we're still scared enough you really have presidential election was going on wonderful wonderful maybe. ok this next one. it all comes saturday night live skit so first play the skits you know where this controversy is stemming from the explain the controversy. also. can i touch. it's the
10:53 pm
guy's name or alec baldwin dave was supposed to be. and they were talking to his shorty balls so ben and jerry's because they actually have a sense of humor decided to create an ice cream flavor called shorty balls and now one million moms this is an affiliate of the american family association they are just really really pissed about this they wrote a really long letter where they by the way described the entire as an l skit is like really good incredible detail i think he did twenty dollars more times than they needed it was so cold. and then they went on to talk about in jerry's how they've done these things before and talked about when they called an ice cream flavor a chubby hubby called which celebrated gave marriage they say it seems that offending customers to get an annual tradition for banning cherries means white people need to get a break seriously. however i'm super excited because the story did lead to some of the most amazing headlines i've ever seen my sweaty balls leaves dirty taste in
10:54 pm
angry moms now. i'm going to go right good i mean if they don't like that's maybe this opens a line of alternative christian ice cream like i don't know rocky road to damascus or you know marcus bachmann's therapy crunch you know. so. let people you can have your question ice cream a lot of people have their ice cream that actually has a sense of humor and refers to pop culture and jerry's as good as you are so pathetic because there are so many things that they can actually be concerned about that wouldn't be legitimize their causes they have to go over it like an ice cream flavor however i did think you'd be super awkward if your child was like daddy i want to. balls i want to show the polls that's really a very very very small tiny insignificant victory but also it really doesn't he should be out for a little while it doesn't taste good that's too bad because it has like chocolate covered rum balls or something like that maybe only after they get a really just doesn't taste good if you're good and i think that's what they're
10:55 pm
going for all right now oh it will speaking of things like that maybe you want your kids seeing this is actually totally different because your kids might end up on it but read it you still have a thing called jailbait on the website where they there were pictures of under aged girls were saying you know as young as thirteen years old looking sexy or whatever and that went away for a little while and people thought that maybe it's because condé nast which i used to read it had a problem with it but now it turns out that jailbait came back as of september first what do you say i mean it's kind of this kind of kiddie porn i've heard there are girls under thirteen years old looking all sexualized and they're saying it's a matter of freedom of speech but this is where you know well ok i'm sorry that there are matters of freedom of speech over kiddy porn is not one of them that's apparently is the kiddie porn because the people are clothed i'm like at this moment mesmerized by the graphic we just showed because one of the titles to the photos was my little cousin that's so disturbing. cleavage
10:56 pm
only you can also know photos with tattoos are allowed because then that's proving that the person was are saying you had to be eighteen years old get a tattoo that's even more sick this makes it like you know a parent getting their twelve year old tatted up it's like parental kindness now you know it's preservation of your child to like a tattoo you put it away but you probably won't even read it crowd. ok really quickly if your car gets lost there's a service out there that can help you with it but they also know my friends you know your privacy a little bit but first let me tell you we're talking about. your car is gone where is your car. kirstin still. all right so if you want on star if you pay for the service then that's a great thing but it turns out i have a new privacy policy that's going to debut in december and basically they're saying that even if you cancel your subscription on star they're going to keep monitoring
10:57 pm
your car and your speed and they're pretending like this is just so in case you want to rejoin it's going to be easier for them but they also like britain because the are bullet point that allows them to collect any data for any purpose and they can share that with people it's kind of messed up you know i mean when you click at there like you know what's your emergency now it's i know you're a virgin see i know where you've been and your wife is not going to like it but you know it's coming up the servers are signing up or who i know it's really frightening and also they're saying well and if they don't say that they don't want to do so someone has to come out and say oh by the way i don't want you to stop me after i'm no longer using your service so ridiculous it's like facebook everything's you know kind of set to go to the most ridiculous private place possible all the everything to remind me to read the fine print because these days nothing is guaranteed thanks for joining me tonight that's a good night so thanks for tuning in to make me back tomorrow for you have the latest for you on my wall street and the time don't think it's been a fan of the literature on facebook and follow us on twitter and if you missed any
