call freedom of speech we'll explore why politicians musicians and journalists alike are coming under fire for speaking their minds. it's wednesday september twenty eighth five pm in washington d.c. i'm christine for watching our team. well let's start this hour with a look at the state of the economy we have taken a look for months now and the growing gap between the rich and the poor this is one of the major themes of the occupy wall street protests taking place across the country the rich keep getting richer the poor keep in core and the middle class is slowly disappearing let's talk about those rich getting richer wall street and the big banks one of the biggest banks one of those banks that was bailed out by the bush administration it turns out is showing signs that it needs help yet again

talking about goldman sachs now this time it's trying at least to help itself taking part in cost cutting measures like cutting thousands of jobs goldman has also announced that switching from twelve ounce drinking cups to ten ounce ones in the offices save to save a few thousand dollars gold is also buying fewer plants for the offices and has decided to make office cafeterias credit and debit card only eliminating the need and the cost of paying armored truck companies to haul away the cash poor goldman sachs but wait a second before you start taking on canned food collections for goldman let's look at the truth behind the numbers of those who do work there are making more than ever before and profits their continue to grow so i want to talk about this and joining me now for more is the publisher of the trends journal and director of trends research institute the always outspoken and gerald ford. lawrence and hey there gerald let's talk about goldman sachs and what's going on there should we be concerned that this mega powerhouse of

a company is now starting to layoff its employees. yes in some ways you know we could make fun of course you know the course cutting edge is there a joke but the whole financial system is under attack and as we saw recently with the released information from the federal reserve we heard from the j.p. morgan chase's of the j.p. morgans and the as the as the other banks saying that they didn't need money while they did and while they were getting so we saw that they're hiding a lot of what they're saying in public and things aren't as good as they claim to be you know there's been a lot of bed that's made out there we saw volatility in the market this summer like no one's ever seen before and now we're going into the volatile season so yeah i

think we should be worried about goldman sachs we should be worried about morgan stanley that was the one i was thinking of j.p. morgan chase who in two thousand and eight and two thousand and nine at the height of the financial crisis was saying their balance sheets was solid while the federal reserve is pumping hundreds of trillions of hundreds of billions of dollars worth a load since it but on the flip side jerrold i mean we hear companies like morgan stanley like goldman sachs and nobody can forget i think shortly after being bailed out you know under tarp goldman sachs is handing out here huge bonuses to his executives its employees and you know just last week earlier this week goldman fans won a dismissal of the case that some of the people brought against him for doing that i mean what do you think that doesn't it's hard to not feel that this company is not crying wolf. again you know. the dismissal of the case i mean the system's

rigged it's just this we're only just oss that's how they got to name these people's heads roll so that's all different one but yes i mean you know they may be exaggerating their life but on a much grander scale whether it's whether it's goldman sachs gang or this credit suisse swindler's or the citi group criminals you name it they're they're all in trouble look at the downgrades that we saw hit the banks just a few weeks ago not only in the u.s. but around the world so good shape goldman sachs may be crying the blues and trying to ease the pain of public hate against it if they're rolled over lloyd are doing god's work is blank you know it's made a lot of the enemies so they meant that maybe your charade but the big picture is this thing's going down it's still hard for me to believe but i at seems to be

entirely you're saying i shouldn't be shocked that goldman sachs you know won this dismissal of the case you know but what about i mean what about what's going on or you're up in kingston new york one amount what's going on on the streets of new york city the streets of l.a. the streets of chicago and denver people protesting identies big banks do you think that this is going to have any effect on changing the system that you say is grand . not right away it's the beginning and by the way i don't know why people are so outraged at the havior of the police in wall street and that's what they do every which is see the g twenty meetings when they have as of body armor to work through the battle of the bulge on scathed heating up coeds this is what the police do the police in the united states have become nothing more than enforces the the crime bosses that's all it is i love this talk about how around nine eleven they kept

talking about they hate our freedom and liberty and that's why they attacked us what freedom and liberty this is what the police do they use excess force to quell the people you can't riot in this country so you're going to see different kinds of riots that you're seeing zero receives well it's been really interesting to see the way that these protests have been covered and by the way it certainly seems to me that's not all the police in new york but some of them but you know when the mainstream media outlets and the newspapers come out to this occupy wall street protest it's interesting because they're sort of dismissing these people as you know dirty hippies an organized people with no real strategy but here's something interesting here and i'm going to play something for you because that's one thing but it's a whole nother thing when you know a professional independent trader was actually given a microphone and a large audience to say something very similar to what these protesters are saying

i'm going to play this and i will talk about it. governments for rule the world goldman sachs rules the world it was the comment heard around the world when they generated widespread reaction from papers and pundits alike we appreciate your candor however it doesn't help the rest of us does it when instead of talking about the comments itself most are really at least not to shoot the messenger alessio resigning prices forbes calls him a psychopath c n b c suggests it might be a hoax and york magazine wonders if it is a hoax or perhaps our worst nightmare well regardless of refining intentions the bigger question has been largely ignored was he wrong about the power of goldman sachs and why was everyone so shocked after all right here at r t in our studios we've had several guests bonafide traders even former goldman sachs employees who have the very same thing washington is not the biggest player in the us the global

a corrupt system. and still others have argued for years that the government's actions are dictated by the big banks and very special interests and last three the insurance industry these guys usually people who are writing the laws that obama is and they are keeping him in power they're the ones that if any of this campaign and the laws are being written for their benefit. as anger builds here perhaps better questions need to be asked here so that a different message is sent to decision makers here that the system that has been sustained and protected for decades might need to change in washington christine for our team. and they're all i should mention i mean we've had you on the show dozens of times and we could have easily put several things that you've said over the past couple years in that report that i did i want to get your take on what do

you think about the shock and awe that's been generated from this comment from this you know independent trader that goldman sachs rules the world. well again as you said you know we said in two thousand and eight wall street side jack washington look at the people who was bush's treasury secretary where did he come from henry paulson goldman sachs who was clinton's treasury secretary at one time robert rubin where they come from goldman sachs who's the head of the central bank up there in canada a guy from goldman sachs who's obama's chief of staff bill daley where's need from vice chairman j.p. morgan chase only an imbecile can say this is becoming so transparent that when you say it out loud and there's enough information out there it's finally starting to wake up even those press that suits on d.v.d. say well why then these crazy headlines all over that instead of asking you know

couldn't but he's saying have some validity and said they you know you have people out there saying oh he's not a real traitor he's a hoax you know what he said is our worst nightmare you know what about this reaction from the media again the media is in bed with with the establishment i mean we see that's why we call it the press that suits their always serving the people that they are beholden so i mean i says what's his name over there dick cheney making the rounds selling his new book and non one person called him out for the laws about not having weapons of mass destruction inside styled keda he throws out the two bit law and no one would argue that the world's better off without saddam hussein oh yeah my life is really changed but i'm saying is there only bed together who waited carney come from obama's mouthpiece oh he was with

time magazine before you can look at the revolving door there all the same and you know i think it is interesting that you mention dick cheney. i know that there were a few protesters in canada actually you know protesting against him on his way to book tour but it is interesting how few we have seen in this country just one more question for you gerald as we wrap up do you think that now that the truth has come out that you know goldman sachs actually does have a hand in shaping up what happens in washington you know whether or not it has been initially digested by the press i mean do you think that now people will start to give it credence i think a lot of people are giving it credence in have been for a very long saw him the press is not going to do it the dogs don't make cats they're not going to change it'll only change when the when the things start to collapse even more or that somebody decides to make someone a scapegoat but other than that it's not going to unravel on its own because with

the media is to say the truth does not they do you for a while certainly interesting to have you weigh in on this as always i know goldman sachs is one of your favorite topics to talk about gerald celente publisher of the trends journal and director of the trends research institute. well it is now day twelve of those occupy wall street protests and while they continue to garner minimal attention by the mainstream media it is clear the protests are indeed growing in strength and number and they're not only in new york where hundreds of people have now started to turn into thousands even with celebrities starting to stop by but now there are people in los angeles then for chicago as well these are people who say they're angry at the power of wall street and at the system that gives it so much power is that they're also angry no one responsible for the financial crisis in the mortgage meltdown has been arrested and yet we've seen more than one hundred protesters have been arrested many more also have had their eyes

burned by pepper spray sprayed in their eyes by police officers one of those people is a woman named chelsea elliott you may have seen her in a video that is now making its way around. her on the ground there laying down with a backpack and actually earlier we spoke to chelsea elliott to get her firsthand account of what exactly happened i was just walking down the sidewalk we just finished marching up to square and we were all three i think in the cops came and they placed a net around us and so we were asking if we could continue walking on the sidewalk and the cops didn't listen and i tried to reason with them explaining you know their pensions have suffered and we're here for them too and then there was a fight going off to the side and the girl behind the screen and she was

pulled down onto the pavement. very brutally and then the girl next to me started screaming and that's when the cop came up so you were inside us you weren't hurting anyone you words watching traffic and yeah i mean we saw on the video you being sort of surrounded and just sprayed in the face i mean what was the first thing across your mind when that happened. honestly it took about three seconds for it to our porch register of what had happened and at that moment my mind kind of just went blank i was just so confused as to why i just fell to the ground i mean all of it about healthy what the reason is that you've been coming out how many days you've been there and why you're taking time out to show up every day. well i live in brooklyn and the first time i came was on a sunday night the first sunday and. i've been there because it's just such an important issue as far as our middle class is disappearing i mean so is the health

and the peace of our country it's terrible what happened people have been held accountable in our government is incredibly corrupt they're being paid by the very people they're supposed to be regulating and and everyone is suffering it's really interesting you being in new york city i'm in washington of course but i read something recently from forbes magazine that you know out of the most the four hundred most wealthy people in this country that fifty of them live in new york and that their combined wealth is something like two hundred something billion dollars and yet the poverty the number of people living under the rate of poverty has risen to almost twenty percent so certainly you are in the city where you're feeling perhaps much heavier than people from around the other parts of the country what is happening here in terms of what you say the gap i'm wondering though you know a lot of people including some write ups from the new york times and other mainstream media outlets they've described the occupy wall street protests

essentially as a bunch of disorganized hippies with a lot of coherence and peace of message you know i'm reading things like this and hearing comments like this on the cable networks who are also showing the video that we showed in the arrest video which of course makes for good t.v. but i'm hearing very little about the point of the protests corruption on wall street what do you think about the fact that so much of the coverage of what you guys are doing have been to be little you know the your fellow protesters for his flaws an organization. honestly i don't understand i think one of the important things about the protests is that we're all autonomous individuals i mean this is it's supposed to affect the entire middle class we're all different people and i mean a very important part of the process itself is that we all have a dialogue about it and understand what happened and how it effects each group differently there's not this isn't for one group of people so of course they're going to make it seem like we're disorganized and chaotic but you know i've been

kind of we've had a camera there just about every day since september seventeenth when this first started seems to me that it's grown and so now we're starting to see they have as i mentioned earlier in los angeles and denver and chicago and i wondering what you think i know mayor bloomberg came out early on and said you know perhaps there would be a tipping point with more and more people living in poverty more and more people unemployed i'm wondering if you see that tipping point ahead in terms of a real movement a larger movement even and what you think the outcome might be. i mean i feel like. i feel like things are going to get worse before they get better and i'm just really hoping that as if the fire nation can join together and stand up for ourselves and the thing that really bothers me about the financial crisis is that most people really have no idea. why or what happened they think that it's an accident when in reality it was very wealthy and powerful corporations through

greed and stupidity destroyed lives for millions and millions of people and. it's kind of hard for me to say that because it's to know what the future holds for us i just i just hope that as this group as we build momentum so will an understanding and awareness of the situation of our government that was chelsea elliott wall street protester from green from brooklyn joining us earlier in our new york studio. and it's not just those protesters having difficulty understanding why their freedom of assembly is the times difficult it appears freedom of speech is also not always an untouchable amendment of the constitution at least that's been the case for some people found that voicing their views will get them into some trouble advantage as you can report even some celebrities have been forced to eat humble pie simply because of something they cite. an american icon

legendary singer world war two veteran and pacifist tony bennett because come under fire full speed in his mind on a radio talk show he said america's actions would ride it provokes terror who the terrorists are with terrorism related terrorists well two wrongs don't make a right they are the ones who started out playing flying into the world trade center what do you know i don't know about tony bennett was attacked afterwards with stinging criticism from some quarters then he went to great lengths to apologize to those his remarks may have offended i'd like to say that i am sorry my state statement suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country america calls itself the land of the free but some are asking why it a living legend like tony bennett has to apologize for his thoughts there's no tolerance really for any deviation from the official law even though here in america we're very proud of our freedom of speech and the right to speak it's

considered holy except if you say the wrong things and you can get in trouble and artists have musicians have now tony bennett speak question freedom of speech approved no defense in protecting the jobs of a number of probably figures in america back down to earth commons that appears to challenge conventional us establishment views journalist helen thomas who'd been a white house reporter for over half a century was forced to resign after she said he's really should leave land they taken from palestinians everybody has been fired for what they say they could. not if you say anything about their president the united states you can call them anything in the book but you can't say anything about israel. automatically makes you any sematic see it is former senior editor of middle east the fierce guardian not sir was sacked a year ago because of a tweet she wrote about her respect for a lebanese cleary who had one time it been seen as the spiritual leader of the

hezbollah that had leader broken ties with them after all sorts all the choices there it was promptly pushed out of the us mainstream media outlets all about consequences social and economic just pressure rather than real censorship politician it's expressing ideas against these that wish when you come under fire true like congressman ron paul who is running for president and some of them large and i don't think i have been listening. they have been explicit and they wrote. their we can act we attacked america because you had bases on our holy land in saudi arabia you do know i give palestinians are fair treatment and you have been bombing. i didn't say that i'm trying to get you to understand what the motive was behind the bombing at the same time we have been bombing and killing hundreds of thousands of iraqis here near would you be annoyed if you're not annoyed by you

going there some problem booed and labeled on petri arctic by some just like tony bennett was when he spoke his mind it's not so much about what these people said that led to them being rude or even being fired from their jobs but rather about the fact that in a country that prides itself on freedom of speech that freedom often comes that a hefty price i'm going to check out reporting from washington r.t. . there are countless examples in this country of free speech having some parameters or exceptions some of those cases have gone all the way to the supreme court but others are often quietly brushed under the rug but the broader discussion is often ignored so we want to bring it out and shed some light on the question of when free speech is and isn't free earlier i spoke to medea benjamin co-founder of code pink i asked her if there really are exceptions to the first amendment of the constitution has her thick. i think europeans back to been brought up to

areas where it's very difficult to speak out in this country one is when you talk about israel and palestine and the other is if you talk about perhaps something that made people dislike that led to as being attacked or continues to leak being attacked there are two areas where making you direct your own peril and certainly we saw helen thomas in the piece she said that you know you can say anything in the bulk of about the president of the united states but if you say something about israel or anti sematic i mean you do you agree that it goes out far it certainly does there are many cases that was fortunately academics like norman finkelstein who was fired from his position at the university or couldn't repeat it here because of his writings about israel palestine the case of the muslim eleven was to stir bind who recently spoke out well the israeli ambassador was giving

a speech and they were taken all the way they were taken to a grand jury let me stop you real quick right there i did just because for our viewers that are unfamiliar with that we actually have video of that this is when the an israeli ambassador ambassador michael oren came to speak at the university of california irvine will play it and talk more about it is a source of frustration that was a person to spend much of his life before the of. these students ended up being found guilty on the charge of conspiring to disrupt a meeting you were just mentioning them what do you think this president you know what kind of president i guess does this that when you know again clearly they weren't being violent they just spoke out in a meeting. it's a terrible precedent for muslim americans and for students in general who i

think will have to think twice now about that kind of action at a university but i also want to say that in my organization could be we have spoken many times when representatives of the israeli government are here and you also have to be concerned for your physical safety because we have been thrown pushed. by members of the audience who refuse to believe that free speech is a right in this country we get death threats for speaking out and i even when i go on fox news and say something. that our clothes will be low that's rare so it's at many levels one is that the level of work at least will tolerate what the audience will tolerate what the public will tolerate and what right wing. media like fox news will tolerate i think that's an important point you know once and once in a while things that are said are deemed to be not covered under free speech but
