it seems the beatings definitely continue until now raul improved so was peaceful protests gain momentum in the fight against wall street why does it seem freedom of speech and the rights of the some are being forced to remain silent with the protests or shot this video. and from one protest to another a process these agree is making progress to secure aid but will a greasy fax really unclog the economic drain us and the e.u. are spiraling down. plus things aren't always what they see well you wouldn't be
4:01 pm
able to tell that by reading the mainstream headlines so as far as they give a false sense. of reality what's really happening. and from one who fails headlines to another maybe it's time for the mainstream media to take a hike out of these unhappy images smothered headlines happy hikers return from scary i read why is the mainstream media so intent on taking a trip into abuse records of broad when there are so many more in their own backyard. it's thursday september twenty ninth four pm in washington d.c. i'm liz wall and you're watching our team protesters occupying wall street continue to gain momentum for nearly two weeks now protesters have been spilling. not only
4:02 pm
wall street but the streets of boston or los angeles and chicago to name a few these people say they represent ninety nine percent of the population in the united states but up with the greed and corruption of a corporate elite and the government that supports them now the movement is growing despite efforts to silence it reports and amateur video of police resorting to violence fencing off crowds performing mass arrests and even pepper spraying protesters seemingly without provocation and our next guest approaches that protester herself again vance field couple of incidents on camera take a look. so i thousand struggle to have their voices heard is freedom of speech and the right to assemble under attack in america. joining me now from boston in mansfield hi jane thanks for joining us. i understand that you were mayes so what happened
4:03 pm
explain to what's the events that led up to you getting the latest. protests in the streets in peaceful streets and we can see unions things sort of change the cops. are aggressive and much more active trying to everyone's excitement. and. the ground of music and we. should begin to believe. you. and the. readers of the beast in the face and. off their face the you soon heard bits needs to get in the ground i guess just some less and less these. tell
4:04 pm
us about what you were seeing around you do you think that the police were resorting to violence. it seems to be a combination of frustration i think maybe. maybe our appearance interview they picked out some people that they associate with the. rabble rousers or people that they would accept even though we weren't i think maybe they as a preventive measure maybe i'm not sure there is some inexplicable reach and they do think that the actions that they were taking pepper spraying people are arresting them where they justified. i don't think so i mean i can understand you. and just having these kind of. miscues there is no you need a while and gestures to them no one resisting arrest there is nothing there is a lot of noise people shouting. and there. was there is no threat to the.
4:05 pm
ok and from what it sounds like there's definitely an attempt to stop there or that leads to silence because protesters to a certain extent do you think that protest being as it looked down upon these days and do you think that one of our fundamental rights as americans the freedom of speech and assembly under attack well i think a lot of ways just for me to use it as far as the christmas day is not the beginning to me and being just organized a fine and so ridiculous and i feel like that's that's coming from the. missing is as the do. they see this as a stereotype and just like it better to do not really there's a lot of people. are their homes foreclosed. any number of other issues that. you do and the people who don't agree to some. and you know recently new york mayor bloomberg warned that the unemployment crisis
4:06 pm
could trigger riots and social unrest do you think this is the direction that we could be heading. can definitely see how it would react into a riot level especially if the cops react in the same way i don't think that the anger and especially not the people in the ground aren't a level in any sort of violence or destruction it could be all right and i can see how you can get involved push back the figures that we just leave. and you know a criticism that you have mentioned and touched on earlier that we're seeing a lot about in the about this movement now in the mainstream media is that these protests lack organization they lack a unified message and as an observer and a participant of occupy wall street do you see this is this true. i think it is definitely a different people don't know there's some people preaching anarchy there's no libertarians there's also some people say that we need more government regulation
4:07 pm
and i think they all have in common seems to be frustration and distrust not only with range of sector but just the top one percent in the country seem to be carrying their fair share and so many people are struggling and suffering. are interested in spending their money in giving people. again thank you so much for sharing your story with us that was jane mansfield a protester with occupy wall street. and there was then financial problems plaguing europe and protesters in greece have been taken to the streets protesting austerity measures and a new property tax measures greece as are necessary in order to secure more on burdensome cash. and the i.m.f. as germany takes steps toward massively increasing the size of the bailout fund to a guaranteed two hundred are right in the belly and euro's many inquiries are in
4:08 pm
buying at r.t. sarah firth is on the ground and out there to give us a line. or ingres that patience is running out amongst the people here in greece take your bailout and leave that was the message from the protesters here today you can still see a few just gathered outside the parliament building we've actually got a concert on at the moment that outside the finance ministry that's the organizations of a lot of people who are being made unemployed to the government's austerity measures that's one of the limitations that they put in place to try and secure that bailout cash the eight billion that's going to be decided on later next month so you can see that that is that the battle on the finance ministry itself saying we want life the people here a feeling that the measures that have been put in place are simply stifling them and realistically that is too high a price to pay so it is to see
4:09 pm
a different reaction to the positivity we saw after that positive vote in germany today it was certainly a positive step that chancellor merkel managed to secure the maturity of that that was seen as taking decisive action but there are questions really eva how much impact that money is going to have not only the greek that stands at around three hundred forty billion euro and the germany voting to extend the size and power of the bailout fund that would now four hundred forty billion. the weight of the two hundred billion will be cultivated by generals who may be the single biggest contributor to that fund and we know that that's cause some discontent among the german public i now remember a cache is playing from that yet because there are still countries that have to vote and that it takes seventeen countries germany with ten per cent is still a way to get and as he said the way that that's being received here amongst the public is with some skepticism they still have
4:10 pm
a lot of people are saying that they view the year is a leader as a part of the problem of this whole year as a financial crisis so they're asking how they can be the solution and also there's a lot of mistrust hit the kids the people here someone telling me today that this isn't a case of things getting worse month by month old week by week even day by day things here are getting worse for the people but boy they see the deadline for attacks and we see the people outside the finance ministry always planning the titles that they've been given they say not only do they not want to kadish they simply can't pay they take have the money anymore a lot of disappointment in the government we sold the protests and clashes break out between the riot police and the protesters on tuesday after the bell for the property tax was passed. certainly a lot of discontent still amongst the people say with the next round of money due
4:11 pm
to be decided on next month and with the ballot being extended what people hear is that if they don't really should they will not cash they feel that the measures being taken a too harsh that is poisoning the patients they speak and they don't know whether this bailout funds going to be medicine all to the country or whether taking that money is going to be drinking from the poison chalice that was our correspondent sara for the latest on the economic turmoil in greece well the five protests nationwide things. are looking up today after u.s. reports show an economic rebound according to the latest headlines out this morning surprise finally some good news on the economic front your are a few of those headlines stocks rally treasuries retreat on economic data the german vote read the bloomberg financial stocks lead broad rally that's according to c.n.n. money. and the wall street journal says u.s.
4:12 pm
stocks futures higher as european markets look to rebound. the reason for those rows the headlines u.s. stocks of the year all rose today on stronger than expected economic data germany's lawmakers approved new powers for the eurozone rescue fund meanwhile here at home the number of jobless claims dropped sharply last week while new numbers shows like growth in the u.s. economy for the second quarter now those of us who aren't economic experts could be forgiven for thinking hoping perhaps of the economic doom and gloom could soon be a saying of the past but is that really the case millions of americans remain unemployed as congress seems to be stuck in political gridlock the future of the eurozone remains unclear of europe's struggles to address its economic crisis and global investors are warning of a financial meltdown and social unrest in the next year according to a bloomberg survey out today so what's the verdict an economy that's slowly on them
4:13 pm
and or winning economic collapse well let's see if my next guest can help us make some sense out of all all of this with me in the studio is edward harrison founder of the blog credit write down at thank you for joining us so i what is it going on before we get into greece let's start with the big picture on the economy for those for those of us who aren't financial experts are things getting better now or are we headed towards another recession which way are the economic winds blog i think. is very clear at this point but the. even at a minimum are headed. and a lot of that actually has to do with the policy response both in europe and in the united states was in the united states we have. you know the end of the school stimulus the end of any sort of support from the government to the economy
4:14 pm
that's going to be a headwind then we also have the. the federal reserve which is also going to keep things relatively. compared to the loosening that they had done before there in europe is pretty much the same thing that you have austerity which is even more than what we have in the united states and you also have the monetary policy which is also fairly tight but may be reduced at some point but both of those the policy response is going to be restrictive and unless we see some miraculous we in the consumer or in. companies it's going to be very difficult so some more doom and gloom what about the these numbers these headlines that we are seeing is this just a small cell. and went along with our i mean there what can we gather anything
4:15 pm
positive from from these ad lines and these new reports you know there were one or two good things. none of them are necessarily a trend this point but we saw job was claims which were under forty thousand for the first time in a long time we saw fairly good numbers in the housing market it shows that during this summer selling season the housing market is stable and then we also saw g.d.p. was estimated at one point three percent annualized instead of one percent which is . then we had thought so that's good but that doesn't necessarily make any difference in terms of how things are proceeding going for i right let's talk a little bit more about jobs because we did see a small drop in childless claims but still more than forty percent. unemployed americans have been out of work for half a year or more four point five million americans and haven't worked for
4:16 pm
a year or more and we even saw burning address the jobs issue yes. today calling it a national crisis do you think that this is changing anytime soon it's not going to change because at the end of the day what we're having a problem with is demand there's a lack of when people have jobs they don't go shopping they don't buy things and therefore companies don't see any demand for their products and they will hire at some point that turns around how does it turn around there's an incremental buyer sometimes that the government in the past two or three years it has been the government now the government's not an incremental bar and as a result we're going to have. economic weakness ok now i want to move on to the situation in europe what's going on in greece at the moment and how might it a fact a euro zone would basically was. where i would say what i call the extended pretty
4:17 pm
strategy when you look at all of the market metrics for greece in particular it's pretty much a lark a certainty that greece will default the question is is how much of a haircut how much of a loss are the creditors for greece going to take at this point the politicians are trying to extend this pretend the creditors don't have to take this loss in the meantime that creates a contagion both in terms of the way that we saw in the previous headlines about the german vote you know the dutch voters but also in terms of greece. it has a contagion to other countries in terms of how it has a knock on effect for the italy as an example so really the politics are negative in terms of being able to come up with a solution we need to see a lot more or in europe we have a recession as well and speaking of recession and gloom bloomberg survey found that
4:18 pm
global investors predict that europe that crisis will lead to an economic slump which will lead to. a financial meltdown which will lead to social unrest in the next year seventy two percent predict the country will abandon the euro within five years do you agree with your prediction i agree that within five years of the euro at least one member is you have to leave the euro zone the economics and the politics the community suggests that it's going to be it's going to within five years perhaps and probably sooner than that what will happen to hopefully is that we will get some sort of rate for greece they will ring fence squeeze and some was. the contagion will be limited but the way that it's looking. be what turns out if it isn't exactly what these people are predicting that's what
4:19 pm
we have social and the whole thing. for ed and i know that you have a solution to all of that really quickly could you tell us what your remedy are for us well there are a number of the different solutions to the i would say the more pragmatic solution that is doable is number one to write down the debts of greece number two give some sort of kick to the creditors of greece in terms of. some sort of upside potential from their economic growth or attached hard assets like gold us or or silver or. you know real assets in the greek economy and then create a fund that in. good people can pay into that fund in order to prepare for bad times and then they pay out as
4:20 pm
a result of very bad sound and that should ring fence the the crisis somewhat greece. the first grade will add thank you we're running out of time but thank you so much for joining us that was at harrison founder of credit write downs . and now we're on to the next story in a free country that prides itself on a free press troop as opposed to when over a propaganda i watch dog press is supposed to hold governments accountable for abuses of power that happened at home last week two american hikers were released from an iranian j.l. a story that continues to make headlines here and the u.s. the headline screamed abuse is in iran but silence it seems when it comes to abuses of power right here on u.s. soil so when it comes to playing the watchdog who is back of the u.s. press really have our teeth anastasio kirk and i reports. the mainstream
4:21 pm
media watchdog over slieve to power daisy near us centric stories honestly these americans coming back after being held in prison stories villainize in government. to be fully comprehend the threat that iran poses. now apparently we don't well there are only skeletons and shoved into the scene the financial crisis and the media are still in you know a deep economic distress in this country that no one predicted we've seen two wars go despite projections that they were about to be good and we see a basic attitude which i characterize as a you all about. the american hikers that were killed in the ring in prison trim headlines dramatizing and mulling over every detail with a simple plea let our kids go they're just waiting for the moment they've been
4:22 pm
waiting for for so long while largely ignoring america's own ongoing detention abuses like those at guantanamo bay every time we complained about our conditions the guards would immediately remind us of comparable thing this is a guantanamo bay. he would remind us of cia prisons in other parts of the world this left out of the mainstream media coverage all that was mentioned us americans were given a hard time and this person will die independent journalist tim shorrock has covered foreign policy for over thirty years and says modern day coverage avoids context the sort of his through the rot began with the cia help overthrow the shah of iran in one nine hundred fifty three and put in a regime that was tuned to american interests that's what the problem is and what iranians have been angry about ever since i. also angry are americans out on the streets at home. with. their positions are routinely
4:23 pm
marginalized and presented as. the mainstream media authorized to ridicule a downplay true american protest and they like to think that this is just a very narrow group of people that say we're in the streets in the last couple weeks and then on in the wall street protests protests. while applauding the arab spring uprising echoing the official stance of the american government many recorders many going to do some producers really want nothing more than to have access to government and they think of governments as a source of news i think as conferences are a place where news is generated wanting to keep their jobs journalists play it safe i couldn't even begin to count how many times someone has told me you know i can't risk pissing off like my source i don't want to be cut out otherwise i need people to work afraid of being blocked from the circle of insiders the mainstream media
4:24 pm
has treated integrity for access this causal relationship let's politicians play havoc with policies and laws while the media whether it's aware of it or not does the government's bidding as does the church in. new york. and joining me for more is brian bakker national coordinator of the answer coalition thank you for joining us now the way that the mainstream media has approached the stories of these two hikers what does this say about our priorities but i think we see with most of the corporate owned media in the united states the call whatever the political position the line if you so speak it of the united states government and i think that largely it's to sensationalize a story and largely to take the u.s. position in this case there's no question about the fact that the three hikers were arrested wrongly by iran held wrongly and ignoring the big question which is that the united states has been virtually at war with iran carrying out sanctions having
4:25 pm
commando operations carrying out cyber attacks against iran iran had a revolution in one nine hundred seventy nine that's the context in other words if you strip any particular at any particular incident even one is great is the arrest of these hikers from the political and historical context the story loses meaning right and the mainstream media has used this incident as an opportunity to criticize and highlighting human rights and justice as in iran and not necessarily saying that that criticism isn't deserved but why have been massacred of these two young band over of the acts that the that the similar acts of abuse occur right here in the u.s. and it gives other u.s. governments an excuse to do to do the same thing right i mean if we have the american media doing what they did in this case and highlighting the abuse of. those who have been detained by americans in iraq those who have been detained in afghanistan including iranian officials who have been detained for long periods of
4:26 pm
time in iraq or those who have been detained at guantanamo bay or in secret prisons around the country around the world and subjected to all kinds of torture the entire american people would be aware that torture bad imprisonment. false imprisonment the violation of people's due process rights is a routine function of the united states government but instead because they are watching the corporate sponsored media they say well that's what's happening in iran that's what the iranian government does rather than focus on what their own government is doing which of course is far greater in terms of what it is doing around the world in terms of. this rating people's due process rights right and you know these hikers they reveal that while they were in iran the guards was constantly remind them of comparable conditions and guantanamo bay and so do you think that the u.s. human rights record can be comparative iran's. well i i think the u.s. human rights record is one of the worst in the world and i think it's
4:27 pm
a fantasy that the u.s. media presents that are somehow the americans are democratic and there's due process rights and people's people are not tortured when in fact it's just the opposite i don't know what the conditions are exactly in iran certainly i'm against any abuse of any prisoner held anywhere i think people's human rights and rates as prisoners must be maintained whether it's iran or any other country but comparing the united states to iran we can see the u.s. has developed an entire global network of secret prisons and has authorized legally authorized the use of torture against people around the world and now we have the obama administration sanctioning the same practice is that we started under bush but also including the right of the american government to kill whoever they do or they want to and there are thousands of people who have been assassinated in terrible killings that's the grossest kind of human rights violation and taking that into account going to ask you kind of a radical question if the tables were turned. and iranians
4:28 pm
illegally wandered on to us and they were captured what kind of approach do you think we would take care do you think they would be treated in a similar fashion or would we handle that with you that well we know that even people who are not accused of political crimes or spine but just mexicans or central americans who have come across the united states border illegally they're being held for years at a time and then be ported there torn away from their families i mean it's a fundamental violation of thousands hundreds of thousands of lives a million people have been deported by the obama administration that's more than any any other president if iranians who are here if iranian demonize targeted country were here at the mexican or canadian border we can be sure that they would be arrested that they would be detained and they would probably never see the way you glenn. that was a thank you so much for joining us that was brian becker national coordinator of the answer coalition and be sure to join me again of thirty minutes coming up all
4:29 pm
