and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then a glimpse something else and you hear see some of the part of it and realize that everything is ok if you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture. let's not forget that we've had an apartheid regime right here in the lead i think iraq the bombings be the one hundred twelve. lead. we never got the book says the birds can come safely get ready because of the air freedom.
6:31 pm
for. a full. length. of time for show and tell us nice program the last time you wanted your take on the growing protest profit by wall street as cities like boston and chicago are also trying one similar groups like the ones we think now in new york so we asked if you thought this could be the beginning of an american spring let's get a piece of the truth in a sense. find out what you have to say. some people believe occupy wall street is
6:32 pm
just the beginning of a revolution a grassroots movement that started on september seventeenth is now spreading to different cities around the country october first you have occupy los angeles on the seventh occupy san diego other protests are spanning across the country from chicago d.c. kentucky to use what does this amount to an emerging american spring or are the numbers still too small the key things within an exception of a few are those americans will lack the backbone to sustain a long process rafique on the other hand says envied it is just the beginning of corporate news media how to minimize reporting on the demonstrations countrywide but social networks facebook and twitter make a big difference and more michael told us as far as this being the beginning of an american spring i really don't know but i will say that the system is so deeply corrupt that it will take something pretty historic to make any fundamental changes to the systems and added an american spring will not happen because the hard drive
6:33 pm
is that of the revolution came today it will be very violent just like all revolutions of the past and americans are huge scared to fight a war with the big banks and then there's a museum two thousand and eight who said america is a good country if you're rich so no one knows for certain if these protests can ever turn into anything resembling a spring but one thing's for certain the seeds have been planted and demonstrations while still small have begun to take root. well as always thank you for responses and here's our next question for you earlier in the show we spoke about the souring relationship between the u.s. and pakistan and sometimes statements from our politicians about bipartisan support for protecting america from our friend to me but as all of us just talk let us know what you think what the u.s. and pakistan ever really go to war you can respond to us on facebook twitter and you tube and you know as your responses might make no you. the sky.
6:34 pm
the light will come. some last carriers will be singing. well today we have a glimmer of hope and it comes from the efforts of consumers to protect their privacy see last week gems on star service sent out a new terms and conditions of use form to their customers one part of the new form of people the wrong way and rightly so the on the second page it read unless the data connection in your vehicle is deactivated data about your vehicle will continue to be collected even if you do not have a plan it is important you convey this to other drivers occupants or subsequent owners of your vehicle i know you might be thinking if you choose to be on star customer are you signing up for this already well think of all the people who buy new cars and get that free one month trial all those people who aren't planning on being on star subscriber would still be monitored on the new policy that would monitor non on star subscribers was set to go into effect in december it was met
6:35 pm
with significant public outcry the media started spreading word customers shared their anger and even some politicians from capitol hill frowned upon the move senators al franken and chris coons sent a letter to on star saying on starr's actions appear to violate basic principles of privacy and fairness on star six million customers we urge you to reconsider these decisions we also urge you to better inform your customers of these ramifications senator chuck schumer even called on the f.t.c. to investigate on star's new agreement but alas it looks like g.m. service paid attention to the anger linda marshall on star's president issued this statement this week. we listened and have decided we will not make the proposed change to our policy when it comes to keeping connection to your vehicle should you decide to cancel be on star service. so we did look at that on star actually listened to the public service frank getting pleas and said that this was the right move by the company but it really surprises me is that the company listen to their
6:36 pm
consumers think about all the companies who have the role that concept of privacy right out the window cell phone providers social media sites customers that finally put their foot down and they demanded on star do the right thing and it worked this time so to me that's a true glimmer of hope. and the erosion of our civil liberties in the ten years since nine eleven and the topic that we've covered often on this show especially the continuation of this erosion under the obama administration the same administration the promise of whole the rule of law while he was still campaigning to be president it's an administration that's decided not to prosecute anybody from the bush administration for torture that hasn't closed guantanamo bay and instead signed a formal policy for indefinite detention and then an administration excuse me that placed an american citizen on an assassination list without any due process and which is continually use the state secrets privilege in courtrooms out of that their push for warrantless tracking what you p.s. devices and the list can go on and on and on not but aside from continuing bush
6:37 pm
policies and damaging his own track record has this president actually killed the civil liberties movement that's a legal scholar jonathan turley argues a new op ed that appeared in the l a times he says that obama may prove to be the quote most disastrous president in our history in terms of civil liberties so is the right term discuss this with me is mike riggs associate editor at reason i can see mike thanks so much for being here and i really think you. like i said this is something we talk about all the time you and i was spoken about it there's no question that our civil liberties are being eroded but what do you think that it's missing from the general discussion that you see you know just on t.v. when people are having to bait or presidential debate yeah i it's a huge question is sort of thinking about on the right over here you could obviously like divide who's responsible. you could talk about the media who is sort of has this like soup of the day type thing when it comes to their coverage you can talk about the size of the federal bureaucracy and how difficult it is through all the stuff back and you can talk about both democrats and republicans not really
6:38 pm
a core group of sort of a large one who have made all of this about national security which is basically the most effective selling point any politician ever had this one i don't think very definitely seems to be a big one i mean you know i yeah i think that fear plays a large role because then people become more complacent if you if you scare them so much and tell them that this is for their own good but in that sense you know if you look back to the end of the bush administration there was a movement going on there was a lot of anger and it was you who originated anger and so here came candidate obama who actually promised that this country would by the rule of law again and he played right into that civil liberties base and now he hasn't followed through with any of that if anything he's just made it worse and so he actually you know killed the civil liberties movement like this professors are angry i think surely he doesn't specify this in his l.a. times opinion piece but i think he's right about obama i mean general bill damage to this argument at the federal level and so far as i mean democrats won
6:39 pm
congressional democrats won in two thousand and six on arguing that not specifically civil liberties because when tony mowbray was bad that the iraq war was bad all this stuff we still have all that congressional democrats are still basically supporting all that stuff so i think in terms of saying like how are we going to roll this stuff back at the federal level i think that's really difficult i don't think the battle at the local level has been lost but then again the issues are totally separate i mean at the state and city level you're not worrying about extraordinary rendition or torture you're worried more about you know whether or not you know. on the pennsylvania maryland border console across state lines so i'm terms of the federal level i mean i don't want to be like you pessimistic but i also why can't i you know i going to any instance i think of something that the federal government rolled back big of a huge overarching policy that was. shown not to work after a cost benefit analysis show me one of their older backwell so we can finally really we don't torture people anymore but you know they're going to have it wasn't hard very very because now we just use proxies now but yeah and we're still sure
6:40 pm
it's going to tell you that yeah it's a suspended habeas corpus for a lot of people down at the base in cuba you know so i don't know and i think the reason this is going to change we have karma if anybody was going to change it was going to be obama because he he ran his campaign on a lot of ideas that don't bring in fundraiser money right so he sort of benefited from there some synergy with this trade a lot of it around the war and national security stuff and then obama sort of stepped up to the plate and said like all these issues that don't bring in money i mean labor unions bring in money for the democratic party middle class people you know public sector employees those people bring in money the democrats you know what it means don't bring in money for anybody it's not a coalition and this stuff is not going to go through congress because i don't like looking in environmental regulations or the health care bill there's a lot of players on both sides that with a ton of money they force this stuff on why why is this kind of the first thing to go you know just when it comes to people so i think that if you think about our constitution and everything about the country supposed to uphold the liberties play
6:41 pm
a really large role of that i like somebody like yourself for example i mean i think that the left here is doing a miserable job and i don't know if it's you know this worship of obama just as the person as turley's are going to be saying it's not about his policies anymore they just worship the character of obama and so they mock him wherever he goes but for libertarians i mean what's more important to you your. economic viewpoint for you to go from or somebody you know that goes on with it goes along with the policies you believe need to happen are to fix the economy or just in general or to your civil liberties really i feel sometimes like it's a false choice i mean our government again from the libertarian perspective is really good at suppressing both of those things at the same time i mean they're really good at implementing regulations that theoretically are bad for jobs because they create create all these burdens for small businesses at the same time they are really good. you know using drones putting out you know they they can't they can do both at the same time i could object to both the same time i would say i think
6:42 pm
turley is selling obama supporters short of their chief concern right now and go into november two thousand and twelve is making sure that he gets reelected because even if they hate him and some of them do by this point or just like him a lot he's still for them the lesser of two evils so i'm not sure that this is there's definitely a cult of personality on the left i think that cold is like weeds and somebody's stroller. you know in the florida panhandle it's not well probably not florida but it's not good prize i think you would honestly be surprised but you know one thing that really says that i think history is the in the past we've always had this moment where we'll go through the dark ages right and then there's this is about a strange thing is the other way we win war right but it's not it's not going to happen this time around. here never and you know i don't think it will i mean also to be able to push the pendulum back i mean first of all doesn't swing back on its own it requires force or for a belief from citizens you can't push a pendulum you don't see you know there's you know the charlie savage the new york
6:43 pm
times came with a great story this week saying that you can find out if you're on the watch list the terror watch list for instance so because you can find out you can you also can petition to have your name removed from it and he also found out that people who had been acquitted in courts could still remain on this list of agents so they should stay on it so again like there's you know like. opening up the government again i think this may be sort of like a pipe dream as well but bring in more government transparency it would sort of be the first step we'd have to know what's happening who's being sent where how many people are being kept telling the wrong watch list shouldn't be what happens to these people when they disappear from their family disagree with them all but i'm all about that let us know what's going on mike thanks so much for joining us now thank you. so come along makers one in one state are going after public employees in their e-mail accounts their actions are now tonight's goal time award and then happy hour peta fishing is born to sell their image have a problem with the chickens but they think that shark attacks are just how larry
6:44 pm
it's back and. let's not forget that we had an apartheid. i think. one well. we have the government says they're keeping safe get ready because you are free to . get some closure see the story and it seems so. you think you understand it and then something else here's some other part of it i realized everything is just. a
6:45 pm
charge as if it. does put a picture of me when i was like nine years old. the silage through leg . incessant i am an old get of friends that i love crap because. it was kind of yesterday. i'm very alone with algeciras place. lucky.
6:46 pm
all right it's time for tonight's tools i will warden's tonight it's a g.o.p. lawmakers in michigan in the g.o.p. to control the state government in michigan last november they won the state house and the governor's race and they held on to the state senate though during their time in charge in lansing michigan republican lawmakers have had to make a drastic but she cuts to deal with the state's finances a one area that targeted its spending on education lawmakers and cut a billion dollars from school budgets which has caused a massive outcry from teachers' unions and state politicians could cut funding to local schools where schools would just close it even for a week which politicians love to treat school employees like punching bags these days but they were ignoring teachers and school support staff sharing and state
6:47 pm
sacrifice. now republican lawmakers weren't happy about the pushback and the efforts by teachers unions to recruit new members and this debate comes after another attempt by conservative michigan activists he tried to use the freedom of information act to obtain the e-mails of teachers in the state and he claimed to be looking for e-mails that mention fund raising for teachers unions or lobbying on state computers and the court system stop the freedom of requests so now the g.o.p. lawmakers have decided to you an end run around the judge's ruling this week that they can house bill forty fifty two out of committee and listen to this the bill would prohibit a public employee from using their public e-mail for political campaigning union activities union recruitment and fund raising if you violate the law you could be fined up to a thousand dollars and spend up to a year in jail or both and organizations the violate the law could face a ten thousand dollar fine so local newspapers in michigan point out the bill actually can be enforced about modify. the state's freedom of information act which
6:48 pm
would be you know the way mean that the emails could be acquired through the law now a judge has already ruled that teachers e-mails were off limits to four requests but the bigger question that really remains here is how state and police this new law are they going to hire people by computer programs to read everybody's emails you know that costs money and i thought michigan was broke we will encourage public employees to tattle on each other that's going to go over really well and help improve morale i think this is another case of state lawmakers creating petty vindictive laws that completely overstep their bounds as laws meant to scare the teachers' unions in the public employees into submission and the language is so broad that it would allow for a witch hunt against public sector employees who disagree with the government that's shameful let's go to let's hope the michigan house bill forty fifty two goes down in flames but since the g.o.p. is in charge in michigan i think unfortunately there's a high chance of passing so i'm sure the courts are going to step in stop this power grab but the core system can't stop us from giving the g.o.p.
6:49 pm
lawmakers and michigan tonight's bull's-eye ward. the time for happy hour and joining me this evening as our key web writer andrew blake and so is the editor at reason augustine and rees dot com hey guys thanks for joining me you've given little glasses not to each other oh yeah you know i feel like i'm not one of the cool kids sometimes i know a little tiny. let's talk about peta and how much they suck in are evil human beings so take a guy got attacked by a shark which is a horrible horrible experience and take a look at what peta came out with afterwards. just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water you see a giant billboard of a great white shark with
6:50 pm
a person's leg dangling out of its mouth. i do think that is the most messed up being it was planted here i mean didn't they do the holocaust exhibit on the mall not too long here just needed to play the holocaust exhibit good job to do it all across just areas where obviously it wasn't horrible this is like they're all it's sort of i'm not going i don't want to go there but it's anti-human i. make sure they're with you i think really horrible but i didn't feel like there should be no humans and the planet earth and all of the above and that step but i don't think about peta is you know they take advantage of sex sells they use it all the time we put them there as i wish we had the clip right now actually where they just have these girls that are performing all kinds of sexual acts with like who covers you know which cities and all that whatever but so it's really ironic that they then took you know had a problem with this ad talking. about kickin and how people like you can skate now
6:51 pm
by the way i think is hilarious and really kind of clever and has a lot of character we decided to tweet to our followers yesterday asked if they thought it was creepy or sexy or funny and a lot of you were on the creepy side of made me feel weird because i don't think it was creepy at all those are some of the peta people said that it wasn't even sexy but it's just like like an example of necrophilia because it's a oh yeah but this is it's not just one of the peta people that was by the way an article the new york times yeah it was peter's pounder and president newkirk who said yeah she said it was like make her feel that it's downright offensive not only to people who care about animal animals but almost everyone it's a clock to be hunted young chicken in a what is a young man would you say also that there fetishisation of human suffering is i think borderline necrophilia more so probably than you know want to get busy with that you could have like as a leg sticking out if you give me a shovel and some lube would i'll show you some never feel you know they're not winning anybody with this is like this is the most interesting thing about this
6:52 pm
it's like i don't know it's like the republicans did a medicare add in which they like. executed a bunch of old people and really this is what we need to do it's like so i like you're not inspiring any sympathy for me like that are you sure that shark screw the chicken i don't care maybe it's because you know who doesn't love animals because the kill animals but you just piss people off all the time then i would be careful but you know i'm going to go by her just because pigs if yeah i don't go kill some puppy ok i have feeling i'm going to get like a death threat. ok moving on. me to regain my composure for a minute check out this this will really quickly think that for. the school it is so fierce. it's just like when i first got here finally cast. me really. you know. i would be harry potter fan eight hundred acres when you get forbidden for is out there so you're. all right this you know really well produced
6:53 pm
ad is put out to try to bring kids to the school and it's k. through twelve. looks like hogwarts but it actually cost forty two thousand dollars a year early with something of a conveniently don't mention any of that is that it's basically run by scientologists and they make the kids they're hired to undertake training routines where they sit still for two hours staring into another students face. into that place of hair is for a bit in there so is any beyond holding hands so apparently they hate sex which is are to make the lame people with their take on chicken delphi students encouraged to tell on other students reminds me a lot of my boarding school and their yes honor policies they had and if you do break the rule you're listed on the golden brought a catalogue of rule breakers hung in public on the door. so apart from the stuffing how is this any different from regular boarding school i mean i didn't i didn't do it i mean i never had to sit and stare at someone's face or to our. hair was
6:54 pm
allowed p.t.a. or whatever was there a golden rod all over the place you know there was a hat on you were beat with the gold spare the rod spoil the child that's right on something about a rod. but leave that out. it's a we're only because like it wouldn't matter if they were talking about harry potter yo gabba gabba or something like that make you miss scientology people like told to turn off with good reason because they are lunatics little what's going to happen to those kids when they get. don't they have to do that weird like seasteading thing and work in sweat camps and like tom cruise is one united lawyer i fear for the youth all right take a look at this this is a new show on the style network that is premier called sperm donor and so in this clip a man to telling his fiance that his past sperm donations have fathered him. children . well that's sort of the getting. the number.
6:55 pm
is. closer to seven. ok i've read that to get a sperm donor you have to go through these really intensive tests if you have like the right personality and the right genes how does that bypass with. that. that's really been did you see how you know what i would say have questions backgrounds that where donor manner here is the goal here is return heating spur maybe even college and really grab your house your kids and i think you see i think it's illegal here boarding school at the golden. boy last also and is basically screwed himself out of a mid-life crisis because he i mean for the rest of his life he's not going be able to sleep with a woman you know twenty years his junior without wondering if he's that baby could this be what it is i don't even be children that are so i want to go myself to a lifetime of flames i could tell you yeah well let's meet your risk taker but i live on the edge. you know that the only reason has seven children is because he's
6:56 pm
not a redhead because nobody wants to. go out to sea and they're going to stink you're going to birth is a ginger you know how much sperm is in semen a lot a lot and you know the average male ejaculate like hundreds of millions of sperm or that semen. i think yes a seventy eight i remind of the. story takes three. so we've been covering god why was street protests obviously we've shown you the video many times and i'm going to show it now for the sake of time those poor girls that were called corral that pepper sprayed and you know i think anybody could agree that that's just not cool if a cop did that and that's vicious and brutal but some people found on officer dot com a forum where the police were just love and they were saying dirty stinking hippies in new york don't like how they're treated me as. one saying those are great the creaming kids are who i'm going to watch some more during football grade. i'd love to see fire hoses employ clean them up and clear the streets and sidewalks for
6:57 pm
