really a joy. ride for the have end of the us around or the space shuttle program china is well on its way to building its own heavenly palace so is this the beginning of the next great space race. since the beatings definitely continue and tell more alan for us so as peaceful protest again moments of in the fight against wall street why does it seem freedom of speech and the right to assemble are being forced to remain silent when we hear from the protests there in the shop as video. plus things aren't always what they
7:01 pm
see you know you wouldn't be able to tell by reading the mainstream how blind celeb may give a false sense of economical reality what's really happening. and from one failed headlines to another maybe it's time for the mainstream media to take a hike i think is happy images smothered headlines happy hikers return from scary iran why is the mainstream media so it's had are taking a travel and sue abuse records abroad when there are so many more in their own backyard. it's thursday september twenty ninth seven pm in washington d.c. i'm liz of all and you are watching our team. well nasa wrapped up its thirty years space shuttle program china has its eye on the sky as they take steps to put one of their men on the moon that a china successfully launched an experimental model the first step in building its
7:02 pm
own heavenly powers so as the chinese space program launches and american astronauts try to hit your ride on russian rockets is this the start of the next great space race or could the u.s. be so use rockets in favor of one with a made in china stamp on it earlier i posed that question to space entrepreneur jeff man there. well first off let me join with the fact that ministration are and congratulating friends in china for a successful launch today this is really exciting because for the first time and the russian space station mir within our break with the beginning of the international space station human being and up to space stations in orbit and if i may for a moment that thing is with being blocked by some politicians from cooperating with our friends in china and working together so you know it's an exciting moment the
7:03 pm
chinese are serious and we can only hope that the lessons of working with the russians and how successful back has been around national space program and we do in the right in the right way cooperating with china. how about some of those political barriers that you. were you know when i left those of us who work in space we're blessed because politicians love to make us suffer for every a little for a growing. you know if you're a limpid athlete and you inspire a politician love to boycott so you know a lot of politicians so you shouldn't work with china because their program is tied to the military american serious issue but on the other hand we learn we work we learn from working with the russian boy a lot great the more you can get transparent so there are several solutions in the u.s. congress and elsewhere folks in you know in the united states who just don't wish
7:04 pm
to corroborate with china that this time but the news is they're moving ahead without us and some of our allies like germany is corroborating on the space station and other nations are working with them on a bunch of thing and i really hope that we start working with the chinese on this space station it's just very exciting and it's what we should be doing. and you know leadership is often seen as a symbol of international leadership at the open the us and losing its power when it comes to space all this. symbolic of being. a client of u.s. power and influence will be the answer great question the answer is really that we are in danger of no longer being the key leader in civilian space the good news is there really is no nation ready to replace us and that's really a shame and nations look to the united states the. decades to come and what we're
7:05 pm
doing to space and really we're really dropping the ball on that we don't seem able to get out back together and come up with a positive. space mission and all of the nations all program a little of the world are suffering because we just came together right now right and we're seeing more cooperation between china and russia russia china from space from from other space care why isn't the last part of this collaboration on further operations far deeper much of the chinese space program the mob or that was launched today comes from the russian program or was commercially india's corroborating with russia germany. with china there's a whole bunch of cooperation going on and we're taking the view that this is not the proper time to engage the chinese in space and then as usual we're going to
7:06 pm
suffer we're going to lose the ability to have a need for. their future direction and i would say to my colleagues who. don't work in with china without working with china inspiration number one we lose out a wonderful opportunity to getting them. china remember to lose out the opportunity to gauge them down what they're thinking what they're doing and. finally if i may the last thing if i may i don't want china to do to us in space with so many markets i want to be in there with them and make sure we mainly to build the chinese well one of the concerns here and. among. my parents. that china is it advancing their interest in. the use of military interests i mean is this is this
7:07 pm
a valid. ballot i don't know what fear is the right word for. concern but a little nation to use that space to engage their myth to advance their military objectives and i would say to those opposed the only way you have a hope of influencing the chinese military is to engage them in gauging cooperation and so if they're not on interest in the interest of our industry the interest of our leadership position just say to the chinese here's where we can work with you if you do the following and those are going to make your program more transparent to cleave your program from the military and if we can expect to reward them. in the international programs then they will respond in the. doorway and we should begin the sooner rather than later because they want to do space for nation's budget and have money last question really quickly do you think this is the
7:08 pm
beginning of the focus right. well not a traditional one that maybe we're all breaking and here somewhere earth but it is the beginning of the united states having to take seriously. long term vision and yes they can continue on this course they will be to the moon and we will still be doing over whether we should talk to them and what we should do that so this is the beginning of a change and we just. do something that was based entrepreneur jeff man there. protesters occupying wall street continued to gain momentum for nearly two weeks now protesters have been spilling out onto not only wall street but the streets of boston los angeles and chicago to name a few these people say they represent ninety nine percent of the population in the united states but up with the greed and corruption of the corporate elite and the
7:09 pm
government that supports from now the movement is growing despite efforts to silence it reports an amateur video of police resorting to violence fencing off crowds performing mouth a rest and even pepper spraying protesters seemingly without provocation one of the protesters a gene mansfield caught a couple of the incidents on camera take a lot. so as thousand struggle to have their voices heard is freedom of speech and the right to assemble under attack of america i spoke to gina earlier and asked her to share her story take a lesson. i was there and the protests and we were in the streets the school walking the streets and we got to union square and things sort of changed the cops became more aggressive and much more active in trying to quell
7:10 pm
everyone's excitement and then they ended up rallying up and he's killing sections of the crowd maybe like ten or twenty even and we're pushing the twelfth street in to begin to believe me by the lives. and the means and forceful in the crowd to begin screaming. and then in this way we wanted to three years of the front face them in the face in the spray from off their basically so hard if it's most of us in the crowd i got it just on the left side and i think on the left eye in and out of there. tell us about what you were seeing a rounding error by do you think that the police were resorting to violence and it seems to be a combination of frustration i think maybe maybe our appearance of you they picked out some people that they associate with the stereotype of rabble rousers or people that they would expect to get even though we weren't i think maybe they saw it as
7:11 pm
a preventative measure maybe i'm going to sure there is some inexplicable reason and they do think that the actions that they were taking pepper spraying people are arresting them where they justified. i don't think so i mean i can understand. you. and just having these go but in this case there is no nobody made any violent gestures to noon resisting grass there is no. there is a lot of noise people shouting shame really and there are cameras out but there is no threat to the. ok and from what it sounds like there is definitely an attack to stop there or that leads to silence these protesters to a certain extent do you think that protest being as it looked down upon these days and do you think that one of our fundamental rights as americans the freedom of speech and assembly under attack well i think
7:12 pm
a lot of it is just for me to do so thus far as the president does not have a need to me and him being disorganized. and i feel like that's that's coming from the. missing is as. they see it is as a scary event just like young people going to do really does a lot of. their homes for fools. and you know other issues. and people going to just. and you know recently new york mayor bloomberg warned that the unemployment crisis could trigger riots and social unrest do you think that this is the direction that we could be heading. i can definitely see you. level especially if the cops react in the same way i don't think. you're in especially not the people in the crowd or to the level of any sort of destruction of property it could be but
7:13 pm
i can see you know. pushed back years that it needed. and you know a criticism that you had mentioned touched on earlier that we're seeing a lot about in the about this movement now in the mainstream media is that these protests lack organization a lack of unified message and as an observer and a participant of occupy wall street do you see this is this true. i think there's definitely a different people you know there are some people preaching in or can you do some libertarians there's also some you can see that we need more government regulation and i think they all have in common seems to be a frustration it is trying to. secure just the top one percent of the country seem to be carrying their fair share it's and we think it's truly inspiring to see who are interested. in. thank you so much for sharing your story with
7:14 pm
us that was jane mansfield a protester with occupy wall street. that goals and financial problems plate europe to protest there isn't greece have been taking to the streets there protesting austerity measures and a new property tax measures greece are necessary in order to secure more emergency cash from that you and the i.m.f. as germany takes steps towards massively increasing the size of the bailout funds who a guaranteed two hundred eleven billion in urals many inquiries aren't buying at sarah ferguson on the ground in athens give us a look at the rising anger. the patience is running out amongst the people here in greece take your belt and leave that was the message from the protesters here today you can still see a few just gathered outside the parliament building we've actually got a concert on at the moment than outside the finance ministry that's healed and i
7:15 pm
say sions a lot of people who are being made and employed. the government's austerity measures one of the implications that they've put in place to try and secure that bailout cash the eight billion is going to be decided on later next month so you can see the balance that the panel on the finance ministry itself saying we will life that people have a feeling that the measures that have been put in place are simply stifling them and that realistically that is too high a price to pay so it is certainly a different reaction to the positivity we saw after that positive vote in germany today that was certainly a positive step that chancellor merkel managed to secure the majority of the scene is taking decisive action but there are questions really able how much impact that money is going to have now currently the greek that stands at around three hundred forty billion euro is and the germany very thing to expand the size and power of
7:16 pm
the bailout fund that would now stand at four hundred forty billion euros await the two hundred billion would be called to be cheated by germany was already the single biggest contributor to that fund and we know that that's caused us and discontent amongst the german public and now we're not in a cash playing for not yet because there are still countries that have to pay tonight takes seventeen countries germany ten percent is still a way to get together and as he said the way that that's being received here amongst the public is with some skepticism they said a lot of people are saying that they view the year is a leader as a part of the problem of this whole u.s. financial quite. so they're asking how they can be the solution and also there's a lot of mistrust hit because the people here's someone telling me today that this isn't a case of things getting worse month by month or week by week even day by day things here getting worse for the people. they see the deadline for attacks we see people
7:17 pm
outside the finance ministry. planning the taxes that they've been given they say not only do they not want to kadish they simply can't pay it they don't have the money anymore a lot of disappointment in the government we saw the protests in clashes break out between the. and the protesters on tuesday after the filth the property tax was passed. certainly a lot of discontent still amongst the people so with the next round of money to be decided on next month there with the telephone being extended what people hear is that it's not really sure they will not catch they feel that the measures being taken to hospital is poisoning the patient's age speak and they don't know whether this bailout funds going to be medicine to the country where the taking that money is going to be drinking from the poison chalice that was our team correspondent sara firth with sara firth of the latest on the economic turmoil in greece.
7:18 pm
well despite protests in asian why things are looking up today after u.s. reports show an economic rebound according to the latest headlines out this morning's surprise finally from good news on the economic front here's a look at a few of them. stocks rally treasuries or trade on the economy data german reeds of bloomberg financial stocks lead broader rally according to c.n.n. money and wall street journal says a u.s. stocks futures are higher as european markets look to rebound. the reason for these rows we have lined us stocks of the euro rose today on stronger than expected economic data germany's lawmakers approved new powers for the eurozone rescue fund meanwhile here at home the number of jobless claims dropped sharply last week while new numbers show like growth in the u.s.
7:19 pm
economy for the second quarter now that for those of us who aren't economic experts could be forgiven for thinking perhaps hoping that the economic doom and gloom could soon be a thing of the past but is that really the case for some answers earlier i spoke with edward harrison founder of the blog credit write down i asked him to break things down for those of us who are not financial experts and tell us of which way the economic winds are blowing take i think. it's not very clear at this point but the odds are even at a minimum that we are headed for a recession and a lot of that actually have to do with the policy response both in europe and in the united states while in the united states we have. you know the end of fiscal stimulus the end of any sort of support from the government to the economy that's going to be
7:20 pm
a headwind then we also have the federal reserve which is also going to keep things relatively high. compared to the loosening that they had done before and then europe is pretty much the same thing that you have austerity which is even more than what we have in the united states and you also have the monetary policy which is also fairly tight but it may be reduced to some point but both of those say that the policy response is going to be restrictive unless we see some miraculous read about in the consumer or. companies it's going to be very difficult so sounds like some more doom and gloom what about the these numbers these headlines that we are seeing is this just a small staff thought by may and with a long it's to go i mean what can we gather anything positive from from these add
7:21 pm
lines and these new reports you know there were one or two good things. none of them are necessarily a trend this point but we saw jobless claims which were under four thousand for the first time in a long time and we saw fairly good numbers in the housing market it shows that during the summer selling season the housing market stabilizes and then we also saw the g.d.p. was estimated one point three percent annualized instead of one percent annualized which is better than we had thought so that's good but that doesn't necessarily make any difference in terms of you know how things are proceeding going forward all right and we thought let's talk a little bit more about jobs because we did see a small drop in jobless claims but still more than forty percent of the unemployed americans have been out of work for half a year or more four point five million americans haven't worked for a year or more and we even saw burning he addressed the jobs issue yesterday
7:22 pm
calling it a quote national crisis do you think that this is changing any time and is not going to change because at the end of the day what we're having a problem with is demand there's a there's a lack of demand when people have jobs they don't go shopping and they don't buy things and therefore companies don't see any demand for their products and they will hire at some point that turns around how does it turn around there's an incremental buyer sometimes that the government in the past two or three years it has been the government now the government's not that incremental buyer as a result we're going to have. economic weakness. ok now i want to move on to the situation in europe what's going on in greece up anon and how might it affect the euro zone will be made so that was. what i call the extend and pretend strategy when you look at all of the market metrics for greece and particular it's
7:23 pm
pretty much a lack of certainty that greece will default the question is how much of a haircut how much of a loss are the creditors for greece going to take at this point the politicians are trying to extend this and pretend the creditors don't have to take this loss in the meantime that creates a contagion both in terms of the way that we saw in the previous headline about the the german voters the dutch voters but also in terms of greece. it has a contagion to other countries in terms of how it has a market effect with italy as an example so really the politics are negative in terms of being able to come up with a solution we need to see a lot more change or in europe we have a recession as well and speaking of recession a gloom i bloomberg survey found that global investors predict that europe's debt crisis will lead to an economic slump which will lead to the financial meltdown
7:24 pm
which will lead to social unrest and the next year seventy two percent predict the country will abandon the euro within five years you agree with the only protection i agree that within five years the euro at least one member is going to have to leave the euro zone the economics and the politics the way they're coming together suggest that it's going to be it's going to happen within five years perhaps and probably sooner than that what will happen hopefully is that we will get some sort of right for greece they will ring fence greece and somewhere. the contagion will be limited but the way that it's looking now. turns to happen it isn't exactly what these people are predicting that's what's going to happen we have social unrest as a whole things. ed and i know that you have
7:25 pm
a solution to all of that really quickly could you tell us what your remedy or well there are a number of different solutions to the i would say the more pragmatic solution that is doable is number one to write down the debt of greece number two give some sort of kicker to the creditors of greece in terms of. some sort of upside potential from their economic growth or attach to hard assets like gold. or silver or. real assets in the greek economy and then create a fun that in times in good times people can pay into that fund in order to prepare for bad times and then they pay out as a result during bad times and that should ring fence. the crisis somewhat greece.

the first. that was ever the harrison founder of the credit write downs. on a free country that prides itself on free press truth is supposed to win over propaganda and watchdog press is supposed to hold governments accountable for abuses of power that happen at home last week two american hikers were released from an iranian jail a story that continues to make headlines here in the u.s. the headline screamed abuse and i ran a silence it seems when it comes to abuses of power right here on u.s. soil so when it comes to playing a large dog who is back as the us press truly have artie's on a starting a turkey now reports the mainstream media watchdog over slieve to power daisy here u.s. centric stories honestly these americans coming back after being held in prison
7:27 pm
stories villainize in government how did we fully comprehend the threat that iran poses. now apparently we don't go in there this is only skeletons and shoved deep into the floors of the scene the financial crisis and the meteor missed. you know a deep economic distress in this country that no one predicted we've seen two wars go on display projections that they were about to be good and we see a basic attitude which i characterize as the you all about us he american hikers that were held in the ring in prison trim headlines dramatizing and mulling over every detail with a simple plea letter kids go they're just waiting for the moment they've been waiting for for so long while largely ignoring america's own ongoing detention abuses like those at guantanamo bay every time we complain that their conditions
7:28 pm
the guards would immediately remind us of comparable conditions at guantanamo bay. it would remind us of cia prisons in other parts of the world this left out of mainstream media coverage all that was mentioned was that americans were given a hard time and this person will go independent journalist tim shorrock has covered foreign policy for over thirty years and says modern day coverage avoids context the sort of his through the raw and began with the cia help overthrow the shah of iran in one nine hundred fifty three and put in a regime that was tuned to american interests that's what the problem is and what iranians have been angry about ever since i was also angry americans out on the streets at home i. cleaned. their positions are routinely marginalized and presented as fringe of. the mainstream media authorized to ridicule a downplay true american protest and they like to think that this is just
7:29 pm
a very narrow group of people that say we're in the streets in the last couple weeks and then on in the wall street protests protests. while applauding the arab spring uprising echoing the official stance of the american government many recorders many to do some producers really want nothing more than to have access to every news and they think of governments as a source of news they think press conferences are a place where news is generated wanting to keep their jobs here in a let's play it safe i couldn't even begin to count how many times someone has told me you know i can't risk pissing off when i get my source i don't want to be cut out otherwise i may be able to work afraid of being blocked from the circle of insiders the mainstream media has treated integrity for this cause the relationship that's politicians play havoc with policies and laws while the media whether it's aware of it or not does the government's.
