you understand it and then he did something else and here's you some other part of it and realized everything is ok. i'm trying hard look at the big picture. let's not forget that we get in a parked car. length i think iraq is beatable in one hundred twelve. we never got the live shows here for keeping safe get ready because of the freedom .
10:31 pm
for. fear. they'll. hide a cyber shell in salads nice program last night a lot of your take on the growing protests across a high wall street as cities like boston and chicago are also trying one similar groups like the ones we think now in new york so we asked if you caught this could be the beginning of an american spring has had a piece of the truth in a sense to find out what you had to say at least some. people believe occupy wall
10:32 pm
street is just the beginning of a revolution a grassroots movement that started on september seventeenth is now spreading to different cities around the country october first you have occupy los angeles on the seventh occupy san diego other protests are spanning across the country from chicago d.c. kentucky to use to what does this amount to an emerging american spring or are the numbers still too small the kid thinks within an exception of a few wacko's americans a lack of backbone to sustain a long process rafique on the other hand says indeed it is just the beginning of corporate news media have minimized reporting on the demonstrations countrywide but social networks facebook and twitter make a big difference and more michael told us as far as this being the beginning of an american spring i really don't know but i will say that the system is so deeply corrupt that it will take something pretty historic to make any fundamental changes to the system and added an american spring will not happen because the hard fact is
10:33 pm
that if a revolution came today it would be very violent just like all revolutions of the past and americans are huge scared to fight a war with the big banks and then there's a museum two thousand and eight who said america is a good country if you're rich so no one knows for certain if these protests can ever turn into anything resembling a spring but one thing's for certain the seas have been planted and demonstrations while still small have begun to take root. well as always thank you for responses and here's our next question for you earlier in the show we spoke about the souring relationship between the u.s. and pakistan and some tough statements from our politicians about bipartisan support for protecting america from our friend to me but is all this just talk let us know what you think with the u.s. and pakistan ever really go to war you could respond to us on facebook twitter and you tube and you know as your response just might make money. is.
10:34 pm
the mind had come to. some last year why are school be singing. ok we have a glimmer of hope and it comes from the efforts of consumers to protect their privacy see last week g.m.'s on star service sends out a new terms and conditions of use form to their customers to one part of the new form people the wrong way and rightly so the on the second page it read unless the data connection to your vehicle is deactivated data about your vehicle will continue to be collected even if you do not have a plan it is important you convey this to other drivers occupants or subsequent owners of your vehicle i know you might be thinking if you choose to be on star customer are you signing up for this already both think of all the people who buy new cars and get that free one month trial period all those people who aren't planning on being on star subscriber would still be monitored to the new policy that would monitor non on star subscribers was set to go into effect in december it was met with significant public outcry the media started spreading word customers
10:35 pm
shared their anger and even some politicians on capitol hill frowned upon the move and there's al franken and chris coons sent a letter to on star saying on star's actions appear to violate basic principles of privacy and fairness on star six million customers we urge you to reconsider these decisions we also urge you to better inform your customers of these ramifications senator chuck schumer even called on the f.t.c. to investigate on star's new agreement but unless it looks like g.m. service paid attention to the anger of marshall on stars president issued this statement this week. we listened and have decided we will not make the proposed change to our policy when it comes to keeping a gated connection to your vehicle should you decide to cancel beyond her service. so if you look at that on star actually listen to the public service frank it includes are pleased and said that this was the right move by the company but it really surprises me is that the company listen to their consumers think about all
10:36 pm
the companies who have thrown that concept of privacy right out the window cell phone providers social media sites a customer's finally put their foot down and they demanded on star do the right thing and it worked this time so to me that's a true glimmer of hope. i mean erosion of our civil liberties in the ten years since nine eleven and the topic that we've covered often on this show especially the continuation of this erosion under the obama administration the same with ministration the promise to uphold the rule of law while he was still campaigning to be president it's an administration that decided not to prosecute anybody from the bush administration for torture that hasn't closed guantanamo bay and instead signed a formal policy for indefinite detention and an administration excuse me that placed an american citizen on an assassination list without any due process which was continually he was a state secrets privilege in court out of that their push for warrantless tracking with yes devices and the list can go on and on and on not but aside from continuing bush policies and damaging his own track record has this president actually killed
10:37 pm
the civil liberties movement that's what legal scholar jonathan turley argues in a new op ed that appeared in the l a times he says that obama may prove to be the quote most disastrous president in our history and terms of civil liberties so is he right or disgust as if we as mike riggs associate editor at recent magazine mike thanks so much for being here and i thank you. like i said this is and we talk about all the time you and i have spoken about it there's no question that our civil liberties are being eroded but why do you think that it's missing from the general discussion that you see just on t.v. when people are having to face or in presidential debate yeah i question is sort of thinking about on the right over here you could obviously like divided who's responsible you could talk about the media who is sort of has this like some of the day type thing when it comes to their coverage you could talk about the size of the federal bureaucracy and how difficult it is true all the stuff back and you can talk about both democrats and republicans not really a core group of sort of
10:38 pm
a large one who have made all of this about national security which is basically the most effective selling point any politician ever was one of the security definitely seems to be a big one i mean you know i yeah i think that fear. plays a large role because then people become more complacent if you if you scare them so much and tell them that this is for their own good but in that sense you know if you look back to the end of the bush administration there was a movement going on there was a lot of anger and it was yeah ordinated anger and so here came candidate obama who actually promised that this country away by the rule of law again and he played right into that civil liberties base and now he hasn't followed through with any of that if anything he's just made it worse and so he actually you know killed the civil liberties movement like this professor is arguing i think turley's he doesn't specify this is l a times and you piece but i think he's right about obama having general full damage to this argument at the federal level and so far as i mean democrats congressional democrats won in two thousand and six on arguing that not
10:39 pm
specifically civil liberties but they're going to move bay was bad that the iraq war was bad all the stuff we still have all the congressional democrats are still basically supporting all that stuff so i think in terms of saying like how are we going to roll this stuff back at the federal level i think that's really difficult i don't think the battle at the local level has been lost but then again the issues are totally separate i mean in the state and city level you're not worrying about extraordinary rendition or torture you're worried more about you know whether or not you know farmers can sell on the pennsylvania maryland border can sell across state lines so on terms of the federal level i mean i don't want to be like you pessimistic but i also like you know i going to any instance i think of something that the federal government rolled back i think of a huge overarching policy that was shown not to work after a cost benefit analysis show you were there older back well we can't find really we don't torture people anymore but you know there is no evidence of any monetary americans now we just use proxies now but yeah and we're still sore it's going to
10:40 pm
yeah suspend habeas corpus for a lot of people down at the base in cuba you know so i don't know and i think the reason this is going to change if anybody was going to change it was going to be obama because he he ran his campaign on a lot of. ideas that don't bring him fundraiser money right so he sort of benefited from there some synergy with this bush hatred a lot of it around the war and national security stuff and then obama sort of stepped up to the plate and said like all these issues that don't bring in money i mean labor unions bring in money for the democratic party middle class people you know public from employees those people bring in money that have them are very little money things don't bring in money for anybody it's not a coalition and this stuff is not going to go before congress because unlike working environment or regulations or the health care bill there's a lot of players on both sides that with it on of money they force this stuff that's why this is kind of the first thing to go you know just when it comes to people's psyche i mean if you think about our constitution everything in this country is supposed to uphold civil liberties play a really large role in that but like somebody like yourself for example i mean i
10:41 pm
think that the left here is doing a miserable job and i don't know if it's you know this worship of obama just as the person as turley's are going to be saying it's not about his policies anymore they just worship the character of obama and so they model him wherever he goes but for libertarians and what's more important to you your. economic viewpoints are going to go for a more somebody you know that goes on with it goes along with the policies you believe need to happen in order to fix the economy or just in general or through your civil liberties really matters i feel sometimes like it's a false choice i mean our government again from a libertarian perspective is really good at suppressing both of those things at the same time i mean they're really good at implementing regulations that theoretically are bad for jobs because they create create all these burdens for small businesses but at the same time they are really good. you know using drones putting out you know like they can they can they can do both at the same time i can object to go through the same time i would say i think turley is selling obama supporters short
10:42 pm
their chief concern right now and going to november two thousand and twelve is making sure that he gets reelected because even if they hate him and some of them do by this point or dislike him a lot he's still for them the lesser of two evils so i'm not sure that this. there's definitely a cult of personality on the left i think that it's like somebody stroller. you know in the florida panhandle it's not well probably not florida but it's not the prize i think you would honestly be surprised but you know one thing. is that in the past we've always had this moment where we'll go through the dark days right and then there's. the other way we win war right but it's not just not going to happen this time right now right here never and i don't know i don't think it will i mean also to be able to push that pendulum back and first of all doesn't swing back on its own and requires force or for a belief and citizens you can't push a pendulum you don't see you know there's you know the charlie savage the new york times came with a great story this week saying that you can find out if you're on the watch list
10:43 pm
the terror watch list for instance so because you can find out you can't you also can't petition to have your name removed from it and he also found out that people who had been acquitted in courts could still remain on this list of egypt's said that they should stay on it so again like there's you know like opening up the government again i think this may be sort of like a pipe dream as well but bringing more government transparency would sort of be the first step we'd have to know what's happening who's being sent where how many people are being kept telling. me what happens to these people when they disappear from their families. let us know what's going on. thank you. in one state are going out here public employees and their e-mail accounts their actions and i still find award and then happy hour peta. to sell their image i have a problem with chickens but they think that shark larry.
10:44 pm
is not. in the park right. i think iraq the beautiful and funny well. whenever government says they're for keeping safe get ready because you know your freedom. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear sees some other part of it and realize that everything is just you don't know i'm trying hard welcomes
10:45 pm
a big picture. you just put a picture of me when i was like nine years old like to tell me truth. i'm a confession i am a total get over friends that i love brad and get hot he is second and. he was kind of the jester. i'm very proud of the let out your serious place.
10:46 pm
all right it's time for tonight's tools i will warden's night goes to g.o.p. lawmakers in michigan to the g.o.p. to control the state government in michigan last november they won the state house and the governor's race and they held on to the state senate so during their time in charge in lansing michigan republican lawmakers have had to make a drastic budget cuts to deal with the state's finances and one area they're targeted is spending on education lawmakers have cut a billion dollars from school budgets which has caused a massive outcry from teachers unions state politicians both to cut funding to local schools where schools will just close it even further. which politicians love to treat school employees like punching bags these days. teachers and school support staff sharing and state sacrifice. the republican lawmakers
10:47 pm
weren't happy about the pushback of the efforts by teachers unions to recruit new members and this debate comes after another attempt by conservative michigan activists he tried to use the freedom of information act to obtain the e-mails of teachers in the state and he claimed to be looking for e-mails that mention fund raising for teachers unions or lobbying on state computers of the court system stop the freedom of nation after class so now g.o.p. lawmakers have decided view an end run around the judge's ruling this week that they move if you can house bill forty fifty two out of committee and listen to this the bill would prohibit a public employee from using their public e-mail for political campaigning union activities union recruitment and fund raising if you violate the law you can be fined up to a thousand dollars and spend up to a year in jail or both and organizations the violate the law could face a ten thousand dollar fine so local newspapers in michigan point out the bill actually can't be enforced without modifying. the state's freedom of information
10:48 pm
act which would be the way mane of the e-mails could be acquired through the law now a judge has already ruled that teachers e-mails were off limits to four requests but the bigger question that really remains here is how is the state in a police this a lot are going to hire people by computer programs to read everybody's e-mails you know that costs money and i got michigan was broke maybe the encouraged public employees to catalog each other that's going to go over really well and help improve morale i think this is another case of state lawmakers creating petty vindictive laws that completely overstepped their bounds this law is meant to scare the teachers' unions in the public employees into submission i like which is so broad that it would allow for a witch hunt against public sector employees who disagree with the government that's shameful and scapegoating so let's hope the mission house bill forty fifty two goes down in flames but since the g.o.p. is in charge in michigan i think unfortunately there's a high chance of passing so i'm sure the courts are going to step in stop this power grab but of course this one can't stop us from giving the g.o.p. lawmakers in michigan tonight to
10:49 pm
a time award. for happy hour and joining me this evening as our team went writer andrew blake and mike riggs says the editor at reason magazine and reason dot com hey guys thanks for joining me you've given little glasses to each other oh yeah i feel like i'm not one of the cool kids out of the mill i don't mind. let's talk about peta and how much they suck in are evil human beings so take a guy got attacked by a shark which is a horrible horrible experience and take a look at what he came out with afterwards. just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water you see a giant billboard of a great white shark with a person's leg dangling added smell. i do think that is the most
10:50 pm
messed up thing already planted here i mean didn't they do the holocaust exhibit on the mall not too long with. is needed like the holocaust exhibit good job to do a holocaust through just areas where obviously it wasn't horrible this is like they were all it's sort of i'm not going i don't want to go there but it's anti-human i can i have you know i will make sure they are with you i thank you very hard here but i feel like there should have been a player out of animals above humans and that's that but the other thing about peta is you know they take advantage of sex sells they use it all the time we have players we put them in their ads i wish we had a clip right now actually where they just have these girls that are performing all kinds of sexual acts with like who covers and you know which movies and all that whatever but so it's really ironic that they've been took you know had a problem with this ad. about kickin and how people like taken by the way i
10:51 pm
think about big it's hilarious and really kind of clever and have a lot of character we decided to tweet to our followers yesterday ask them if they thought it was creepy or sexy or funny and a lot of you were on the creepy side it made me feel weird because i think it was creepy at all some of the peter people said it wasn't even sexy but it's just like like an example of necrophilia because it's a yeah but this is it's not just some of the peta people that was by the way an article the new york times yeah it was he was founder and president newkirk who said yeah she said it was like necrophilia said it's downright offensive not only to people who care about animal animals but almost everyone it's a class to be headed young chick in a young woman for young can we just say also that there are fetishisation of human suffering is i think borderline more so probably than you know i want to get busy with that your god like there's no leg sticking out of his art mouth you give me a shovel and some lube and i'll show you some never feel you know they're not winning anybody with this is like this is the most interesting thing about this it's like i don't know it's like the republicans did medicare ad in which they like
10:52 pm
. executed a bunch of old people and it's really this is what we need to do it's like so i like you're not inspiring any sympathy for me like that are you sure that shark screw the chicken i don't care maybe it was you know who doesn't love animals by the animals but you just piss people off all the time then you know he's going to care enough that you know i'm to go i have fur just because this yeah i'm going to kill some puppy ok i have a feeling i'm going to get like a death threat and i don't. ok moving on. you can regain my composure for a minute check out this this really quickly secret that. this school is so fierce. it's different when i first got here finally cast. out you know. and i will be here brothers and eight hundred acres of land you get for green forest out there it's like you're. all right so this you know really well
10:53 pm
produced that is put out to try to bring kids to the school of k. through twelve. looks like hogwarts but it actually cost forty two thousand dollars a year fairly it was something that they conveniently don't mention in me that it's basically run by scientologists and they make the kids they're hired to undertake training routines where they sit still for two hours staring into another students face. he did that facial hair is it in there so is any beyond holding hands so apparently they hate sex which is our to make them lame people with their take on chicken tell my students courage to tell on other students reminds me a lot of my boarding school and their yes honor policies they had and if you do break a rule you're listed on the gold in a broad catalogue of rule breakers hung in public on the tour. so far from the eye stopping how is this any different from regular boarding school i mean i didn't i didn't go to i mean i never had to sit and stare at someone's face or to our.
10:54 pm
facial hair was allowed p.t.a. or whatever it was or goldenrod all over the place there was never you were with the golden god spare the rod spoil the child that's right on something about iraq. leave that out sorry the problem it's over your only because like it wouldn't matter if they were talking about harry potter or yo gabba gabba or something like that maybe you missed them scientology people like told a friend off with a good reason because they are lunatics little what's going to happen to those kids when they get. you don't have to do that we would like seasteading thing and work and sweat camps and like tom cruise's lawyer i fear for the us. all right take a look at this clip really quick this is a new show on the style network that just premiered called sperm donor and so in this clip a man is telling his fiance that his past sperm donations have fathered him seventy children. well that's sort of what i'm getting. the number of
10:55 pm
least as far as the closer to seventy. i'm ok i've read that to be a sperm donor you have to go through these really intensive tests if you have like the right personality and the right genes i mean the bypass with. that new true it's really in did you see how you know that i if they have question the background of that man or here his goal here is what could he spare maybe his college i don't really matter because it's and i think it's really i think it's illegal for your school at the golden. boy last year but also he is basically screwed himself out of a mid-life crisis because he i mean for the rest of his life he's not going be able to sleep with a woman you know twenty years his junior without wondering if he's back baby would this be what is in the children that are so i want to know myself to a lifetime of flames. well that's me that you're a risk taker i live on the edge yeah well you know that the only reason i have seven children is because he's not a redhead because remember nobody wants to. go out of sand they're going to stink
10:56 pm
you're going to births as a gender you know how much sperm is in semen a lot. and you know the average male a jacket like hundreds of millions of sperm about semen. i think it gets a seventy reading a reminder that yeah yeah story next story. we've been covering occupy wall street protests obviously we have shown you the video many times not going to show now for the sake of time those poor girls that were close corralled that pepper sprayed and you know i think anybody could agree that that's just not cool if a cop did that and that's vicious and brutal but some people found on officer dot com a forum where the police were just love and they were saying dirty stinking hippies in new york don't like how they're treated with me as. one thing those are great the creaming kids are who i'm going to watch some more during brake. i'd love to see fire whores is employed clean them up and clear the streets and sidewalks for
10:57 pm
traffic wouldn't want to miss out on the entertainment. you know you drive because you like to think that if there's one bad seed that one guy and then you find a hole for him where they're all like yeah come on like this is the internet like any group can seem exponentially bigger as they are adult is in real life because of they're the only no i don't think that's what it's like you know like only people who work i criticize cops like for a living like i write about police brutality for a living i know that there's a like a pathology among law enforcement you know they call themselves maternal order of police there's a big us versus them mentality i do think sites like monster dot com there's another one for d.h. it's called represent like a minority but it is really scary those guys have guns. they can pull you over agree that probably don't say about that wrap it up but thank you for joining me tonight and it's every night thanks for tuning in to make sure because that's tomorrow it's been over ten years since nine eleven so if i'm full of polish and part of homeland security do you believe the cato institute is going to join us on
