1:01 pm
it's just after nine pm here in the russian capital you're watching our t.v. now to our top story police in new york have violently disperse an anti wall street rally arresting more than seven hundred people after a dramatic showdown on brooklyn bridge while thousands joined the movement dubbed occupy wall street in protest against what they call corporate domination as artie's medina portnoy explains the action of police is likely to bring more anger to the streets of new york and beyond. right about now most of the protesters that were arrested from what we're being told more than seven hundred of them have been released or in the process of being released from prison from where they were being held i spoke with one of the protesters who said he wasn't sure if he could come on camera because he has to speak with his lawyer first all of these folks are being charged with disorderly conduct but as we could tell from the video and the images that were taken on saturday this was quite a clash a clash between thousands of americans that began their demonstration at
1:02 pm
a park by wall street and then walked onto the brooklyn bridge now according to some protesters they said that the police officers working for the new york city police department actually helped them get on the bridge or a score to them or didn't stop them from getting on to the bridge and once thousands were on some protesters say that that's when the cops blocked off the bridge on both ends and began to use netting to sort of arrest many of the demonstrators that we can't deny the fact that the media in the u.s. is covering it they are but how they're covering it is a different story for example i just want to show you the front page of the new york times from this sunday ok mind you one new york times reporter journalist was arrested in this protest that took place now here the biggest picture is of one protester in syria and right down here is a little picture of all the new york city protesters that were arrested on the brooklyn bridge so you could see the comparison why they decided to make that
1:03 pm
decision i have no clue but many critics do believe that the mainstream media are either trying to take credibility away from all these demonstrators or not give them ample coverage maybe make it a very short story and in the meantime though these protesters that are part of what's called occupy wall street say they are determined to continue to continue to demonstrate. camping out by wall street that's where they have been for the past two weeks now this incident that we saw erupt in new york on saturday was the most recent one but it's not the first one just last weekend we saw cops and demonstrators clashed out by wall street several women were maced in the face by a police officer others were arrested there was a confrontation physical confrontation between police officers and the demonstrators but this occupy wall street group isn't limited to new york city there are demonstrations now taking place in los angeles taking place in boston
1:04 pm
taking place in other cities throughout the country. join the live t.v. journalist who was off of the brooklyn bridge when the show to place of mr devereux we would see the brutal pictures circulating in the media of what happened what exactly did you see and experience. well i was covering the protest for the t.v. radio news program democracy now here in the united states and i began with the protesters in liberty square liberty plaza formerly zuccotti park where the protesters of protesters have been camped out for the going into their third week now it was approximately fifteen hundred to two thousand people marching to the brooklyn bridge on the sidewalks as we approached the entrance to the brooklyn bridge there was a bit of a disagreement. to contingents of the protesters as to whether or not to take the pedestrian path along the bridge or to take to the road itself with many chanting off the sidewalk into the streets during understand yourself weren't you i was i
1:05 pm
was about i was released because i had a press pass. eventually the crowd decided to take to the streets there were there were far too many people as far as i could tell for the police that were there they are gathered in the bottom of the bridge at the bottom of the bridge to stop and the police stepped aside and the crowd moved on to the bridge people we can again jump and over the banisters and joining the crowd yes well do you think they are the of the police actions were justified and what do you think about their contention saying that they had issued warning therefore if you had gotten on the bridge it was your choice if they had won that you'd be arrested. i was standing at the very front of this crowd and though i did see an officer on the megaphone i could hear him making some sort of statement the noise of the crowd the chanting was far too loud to make out any in any way clearly what he was saying so for those further back in the group seeing the police step aside and seen them walk next to
1:06 pm
the crowd could certainly give one the impression that the police were escorting the protesters to the other side of the bridge and that turned out not to be the case when we got to the middle and the police and stopped us and cut off the group of protesters from behind in the front ok well the sort of the biggest of protests happening right now is in new york city of course and the mayor he had said that the protesters are blaming the wrong people you're blaming struggling a bankers and that you should be blaming freddie mac. and that fannie mae and the congress and so do you think that the protesters are blaming the wrong people here. i don't know if the protesters are as focused on blame as that is that it sort of suggests there are a number of grievances. aired but there were more about coming together than they are labeling people or assigning blame how do you think this movement is going to spread though it's been compared to the arab spring has in it it certainly has and
1:07 pm
it is spreading to the extent that it's spreading it's hard to say how big the occupations in other cities are but they are springing up more and more every day around the country ok our correspondent was our earlier if you had heard was a showing at the a front page of the new york times there a small picture at the bottom there of what's happening in new york do you think that these events are enough to get the attention of washington and the white house well it whether it gets the attention of washington the white house i don't know but i can tell you this after last weekend's crackdown the amount of attention that occupy wall street has received since then has been precedented in the numbers this week and were far larger than they were last week and many didn't believe that there would be another dramatic confrontation as we can after what happened last weekend after four women were pepper sprayed while they were corralled by the police after the n.y.p.d. used heavy handed tactics punching some protesters i think many people didn't expect that there would be something like that again this weekend though i have
1:08 pm
heard no reports of pepper spray being used there were there were aggressive arrests and there were thousands of people stopped and hundreds arrested attending a massive display of civil disobedience right thanks very much at their t.v. journalist ryan devereaux talking to us live there thanks very much well radio host and author of stephen london says the ever expanding process protests show awareness is growing among americans of the country is run by people they never elected. well everyone controls the power of money is being power there controls everything control war and peace all it's tears rose again j.p. morgan chase bank of america they really go on with this yes they start people over streets across america after i understand lives and they have to demand that the power of money return to congress is article one of those should. always be the
1:09 pm
congress has the power to call it money doesn't seem to be what this is a big of america all leading congress very proud is returning to congress they would have to protest that both big and the power of money will go back to the people were a lot. of the discontent being seen in the us indicates some things going very wrong in the way the country's ruled that's a view of prominent author and professor noam chomsky his full interview is coming up next hour here on. the streets you can sue. your spot. in the world right so. much like. two thirds of the public thinks the entire congress will be thrown out means that the system isn't working and the public knows. the popularity of the favorable rating for congress and single. president in the same bunch of course all
1:10 pm
of the. it's a very widespread sense that everything is going wrong that tells you that the system is just not functioning. well this week's headlines in russia have been dominated by the planet reshuffle and the put in bad debt in tandem and the sudden departure of the finance minister well it prompted an unexpected interview from the president as he clarified his decision not to run for the office again but as artistic at the. trover reports that pre-election period in russia may hold even more surprises i think this week's headlines have been all that if putin putin meant that if the news of the drops was brought up polemic switch russia hasn't seen for quite some time while some criticised others applauded the tandems deal and the kings of photoshop rolled out some of their best work yet with the general mood being that the deal had been done
1:11 pm
long ago but it was an exciting for just a few days until the first rich shuffles in the corridors of power began. if you think your views on russia's economic agenda differ from mine as president you can resign. my opinions do differ from yours but only take such a decision after i've talked to the prime minister of most observers that you can talk to whoever you want including the prime minister but as long as i'm the president i make these decisions. the surprise right now between the president and putin's longtime ally aleksey could read left many questioning is there a split in the tandem solution the situation with mr cooder it is a matter of discipline in government service we are a presidential republic not a parliamentary one it implements the president's policies if you don't agree you should step down meanwhile many read it not as a sign of a split but of
1:12 pm
a new maturity in russia's democracy. most were mostly your wishful thinking all the bottles are born else these people probably remember the times of the whole gorbachev when there was a rift inside the board of bureau which ultimately was one of the reasons for the collapse of the u.s.s.r. and i remember before coming to power interview where he basically said that russia will not survive another conflict inside the elites so from the very beginning i do believe that there was a serious rift the big news of putin yet again running for president brought up so many questions that nutriment verge of how to meet top t.v. hats to cross the t.'s and dot the ice. of course it's nice to know that people trust me as president and that my approval rating is quite high under current circumstances but i also know that prime minister putin undoubtedly remains the most popular politician in our country at this point and his rating is even higher
1:13 pm
so the election campaign has just started let's ask ourselves a simple question what if our people reject us with medvedev and putin what will happen to these decisions by the convention these decisions are merely the party's recommendation to vote for those people that's all the choices made by the people and these are not mere words you type saluki true any politician and any political force may lose an election but many questions are still in the air like why would a politician like nutriment verdi of whose approval rating is still so high in russia not seek reelection and what will the face of the new cabinet of ministers look like under him should he become pm immediately after the united russia congress many rejoiced in the fact that the country's top political quiz is finally over and they can go about their usual business but this week has shown that when it comes to the chess game of process and politics there are many more moves to be
1:14 pm
made before the final make up of the new govern. munt is no if you do that children are t.v. most. well if you want to see the interview president medvedev gave to the russian media in full all we have to do is log on to right now for a website that's r.t. dot com. well thousands of march through the northern british city of manchester and another protest at a sturdy cuts to public services and pensions the rally in opposition to the governing coalition and organized by trade unions coincided with the ruling a conservative party's conference in the city lore and it was there. a lot of the conservative casa conferences star say ten mansions and the moment that politicians and delegates started to arrive this happens overnight is estimated thirty thousand people are turning out for this march through the streets of mansions to protest what the coalition government is doing in the way of and you've literally got all
1:15 pm
sorts of people hey you've got the older generation saying hands off of pensions you've got to sort of middle age generation who failed that their job see because as money to public service is slashed you go it's very very young who are worried that some things like no serene's and provisions for education will be cut and of course manchester have a massive student population so you've got a lot of students turned out much like in all the marches that we've seen across the country turned out to protest against the rising cost of education i spake to some of the people who are here to us and just why they thought it was important to turn out today and here's what they told me i think it's important that we send a message to the good moments in a covering old school in particular that the people on the roads are poor winnie's course could still be sober says she put we should let the government know the majority of people opposed to what they do you usually go to church i think just a paycheck to show about it to join the child schools that what it meant to be true
1:16 pm
and build a movement about the bring this government down and bring in a government that doesn't offer working people now look to the finest that you can see and hear around me are calling for a strike on the thirtieth of may ban but they're calling for a general strike for public sector workers to down to leave wasn't sure the government just exactly what it would be like if public sector workers didn't in fact show up for work in the morning so that's what they're planning to do a lot of the biggest unions in the country in unison yes they have all turned out here today to say we will down tools on the thirtieth of november unless you promise that you're going to make these deep cuts in public sector funding that you'll. oh protests in debt ridden greece have been going on for months now and this week the country tightened its belt even further to please its creditors the government approved a new property tax and the move received an angry response from greeks who are already burdened by austerity measures meanwhile the decision on another portion of
1:17 pm
the e.u. rescue package is still being delayed international inspectors all right now assessing whether greece disserves a cash injection a last chance for the country to avoid a default and as artists are for reports of public remains convinced that the relentless austerity policy is only making things worse. greece has been the poster child of the year a crisis with germany baiting to expand the belle out the country look sets to get that much needed cash injection help come with some conditions here in greece the people say the price they're being made to pay if simply too high burning that. is deadline day for the first to be hit with the greek government's new special tax it's one of the measures they put in place to try to secure the next tranche of money the country needs to avoid bankruptcy the extra tax which is about another three percent from people's annual income supposed to help plug some of the massive

deficit in the budget but after more than a year's salary cuts rises in living costs the people here already at breaking point the last two years almost everybody has. heard of the. people's desperation has become increasingly evident on the streets of greece the violence is repeatedly breaking out between riot police and protesters. even more clashes is parliament again feted in yet another measure in the fall of any property tax. or organize. all of this desirous to put goodies on the area may have just for political reasons grass and critics do not need the i.m.f. many people in greece now question just here it is the thing control unfortunately very very a leaders in your resume are the bankers. from european

central bank bankers are not shared folders are not being. called again and again and again are the. folks in the euro zone with past measures failing to have the facts and as political leaders continue to struggle to convince the public the future of the euro is a still hangs in the balance but these protests over strict just that to continue many people has said that greece is a country now at risk of having not only a financial but a democratic deficit as well surf. outside the college building in athens and still ahead and the program for you hello to our stalemate on service border with more the cost of all turns violence as nato forces leave several people drawing to dismantle world blocks near a disputed. by egypt's ruling

military council has given in to the demands of protesters and political parties and agreed to make changes to the election law well there were fears the current rules could enable supporters of ousted president mubarak to come back to power and problem one three elections the decision comes out for friday's massive protests thousand strong here square in an attempt to reclaim the revolution demanding a transfer of power to civilian rule and an end to emergency law parties and he said now i want to cairo to see what else is driving people back onto the streets. we knew that change would come to egypt a new chapter of freedom and democracy don't judge a book by its cover when reading post mubarak egypt it's between the lines where you'll find a new chapter hasn't been published and it did were slightly revised we still have the supreme council of the on poor says goes. i cannot say that they have been.
1:21 pm
in any sense gearing this country towards democracy barak may be gone but his policies are not force me mubarak's case is ongoing at this tribe you know new figures from human rights watch claims more civilians have been forced to face military trial for six months some twelve thousand during the entire thirty year rule of war on average civilians are giving five to you know seven years in prison a lot of torture has occurred since skaf has come into power. actor doesn't clown around when it comes to the supreme council or scarf he has taken part in protests since day one and still has scars from being detained because the marks are much worse he said very long they told people they had to stick it humbly for months after that i was shot with
1:22 pm
a stud gun and beaten with bats on the head least only because i'm well known now most of us leave the country for thirty years according to law if i have to seek asylum but all stay and fight for freedom like mubarak skaf gets the support it needs to rule egypt from abroad and the aid that we get from the us that one point five billion a year the easier proceeds from from the usa and most of it entirely goes to the to the supreme court to the to the army you know the scout and while the west coast history books will change for the better the arab spring is a massive opportunity to spread peace prosperity democracy egypt sions are left reading the writing on the wall and many more if you areas it's the same as before don't want different from in some areas it's getting more worse and he's now a r t cairo. they live in a city of serapis plunging deeper into
1:23 pm
a humanitarian crisis the battle for want to get off these few remaining strongholds shows no signs of abating a lot saturday revolutionary forces claim they completely surrounded the colonel's hometown and his loyalists forces were being a slowly forced out while thousands are fleeing the siege talent driven from their homes by fierce fighting at a lack of vital supplies aid agencies say those injured and trapped are in desperate need of medical help people dying in the main hospital because of oxygen and fuel shortages and you are activists brian becker says nato has declared mission to protect civilians is now more questionable than ever. clearly they're not protecting civilians when they're bombing cities that are considered to be pro khadafi when they're killing people not because they've done something wrong but because their own political beliefs are contrary to what nato wants in terms of the kind of government they want for libya so i think that they need to be brought to
1:24 pm
justice i think though unless there's a very strong international movement for human rights in this instance i think it's unlikely they will be brought to court but the goal of the nato powers is to carry out regime change so that the gadhafi government is gone once and forever and that there will be a new government that will not necessarily be more democratic or more humane but will be an ally or i would say in fact a proxy a client perhaps a puppet of western powers in this country that has the largest oil reserves in all about africa the ninth largest oil reserves in the world. syria is another country still suffering internal conflict but this week western countries did drop calls for immediate sanctions on the syrian regime it follows criticism from russia which says negotiations are the only way forward. we cannot support the project that is being pushed through by western countries and it is among other things to do with

the libyan experience foreign minister sergey lavrov criticized proposed sanctions saying they lacked strategic perspective recap of how things unfolded at the united nations on our website our. violence flared up again this week around cos of those northern border as nato troops attempted to dismantle serbian robock several serbs were wounded a bit claims the alliance led forces were using live rounds local services have barricaded the road to disputed checkpoints that albanian sees earlier with the help of k. four troops but artie's alexei out of shops he has the story from. in some parts of the world this walk a road would probably be part of an extreme safari impossible it is now a point. ever since july is border dispute many lives have been dependent on this godforsaken grable road through the mountains now this is the only way that belgrade can use to deliver food and petrol to the tens of thousands of serbs

living in northern kosovo the course of the serbs have been very caging the road since july in response to the cost of the police checkpoints which enforce the trade embargo between belgrade and of itself on tuesday the situation turned critical again clashes between the barricading serbs and the k. four troops led to multiple injuries on both sides ok for blame the. starting the violence but injured alexandre a father of two saw it differently. we were standing by the barricade when the soldiers started shouting and shooting at us i didn't know what they were shooting with so i got scared and started running away and i was hit on the shoulder and it turned out to be a perforating wound of my lung nato forces also claimed they used only rubber bullets and tear gas against the protesting mob this was quickly rejected by doctors in need of its fuelling speculation as to who started.
