fierce fighting between pro and anti kadafi factions. and live from moscow this is our team recapping of the week's top stories i'm sean thomas we'll get right to the news now at this point. anti wall street protesters have vowed to continue their fight and that's despite saturday's arrest of more than seven hundred demonstrators who were blocking parts of the brooklyn bridge the movement called occupy wall street is venting its anger at high unemployment rates the two thousand and eight bank bailouts and a social injustice and as artie's marina poured my explains the action of police is likely to add more fuel to the fire. right about now most of the protesters that were arrested from what we're being told more than seven hundred of them have been released or in the process of being released from prison from where they were being
6:02 pm
held i spoke with one of the protesters who said he wasn't sure if he could come on camera because he has to speak with his lawyer first all of these folks are being charged with disorderly conduct but as we could tell from the video and the images that were taken on saturday this was quite a clash a clash between thousands of americans that began their demonstration at a park by a wall street and then walked onto the brooklyn bridge we can't deny the fact that the media in the u.s. is covering it they are but how they're covering it is a different story for example i just want to show you the front page of the new york times from this sunday ok mind you one new york times reporter journalist was arrested in this protest that took place now here the biggest picture is of one protester in syria and right down here is a little picture of all the new york city protesters that were arrested on the brooklyn bridge so you could see the comparison why they decided to make that decision i have no clue but many critics do believe that the mainstream media are
6:03 pm
either trying to take credibility away from all these demonstrators or not give them ample coverage maybe make it a very short story and in the meantime though these protesters that are part of what's called occupy wall street say they are determined to continue to continue demonstrating in continued camping out by wall street that's where they have been for the past two weeks now this incident that we saw erupt in new york on saturday was the most recent one but it's not the first one just last weekend we saw cops and demonstrators clashed down by wall street several women were maced in the face by a police officer others were arrested there was a confrontation. in physical confrontation between police officers and the demonstrators but this occupy wall street group isn't limited to new york city there are demonstrations now taking place in los angeles taking place in boston
6:04 pm
taking place in other cities throughout the country. james corbet editor of independent news website corporate report dot com says police action it could well spark a violent response there could be that possibility of escalation at this moment i would say that the momentum and the probably the p.r. win is on the protester side because no one likes to see the police going in and breaking up a peaceful protest movements like that and especially now that we're getting reports that the protesters were actually lured on to the bridge and then trapped it's quite obvious by this point that the monetary system itself need to reform but i think if we leave that in the hands of the regulators and the people who have been in charge of the system they're really just going to try to consolidate more power for themselves so we see that for example playing out in the euro zone by the european central bank arguing for more power rather than less power because because they need more power to him to further consolidate the europe of the euro zone into a coherent whole that's the argument that they're trying to use and i think what these protest movements indicate is
6:05 pm
a is an acknowledgment on the people's part and that that that can't be allowed to continue because if it does then just more and more of these types of things will continue to happen is the power of cool lessons into fewer and fewer hands sara flounders from activist group international action center says the u.s. is preaching a democracy around the world while forgetting about the rights of its own citizens . this is really a police effort to shut down mass the sense here see u.s. government that claims to speak for democracy all over the world while dropping bombs on people in many many countries and here at home when people are involved in democratic protests and demonstrations against the domination of wall street representing really the interests of the vast majority of people the latest polls today's show that seventy five percent of the population is sympathetic to these protests prominent author and professor noam chomsky sees it the demonstrations as people's way of saying that the system is not working his full interview is coming
6:06 pm
up later this hour but here is a quick preview. from the streets you can sue. your supporters on the. right side bush so much like third world countries. two thirds of the public thinks the entire congress would be through no means that the system isn't working and the public knows. the popularity of the favorable rating for congress to do to the president not want her on the same runs across all of their institutions it's a very widespread sense that everything is going wrong and the tools to the credit system is just not functioning. thousands have marched through the northern of british city of manchester and another protest at austerity cuts to public services and pensions the rally in opposition to the governing coalition and organized by trade unions coincided with
6:07 pm
the ruling conservative party's conference in the city parties or and it was there . the conservative casa conference was a star say ten manchester and the moment that politicians and delegates started to arrive this happens overnight is estimated thirty thousand people are turning out for this march through the streets of manchester to protest what the coalition government is doing in the way of caucus and you've literally got full sorts of people hey you've got the older generation saying hands off pensions you've got the sort of middle aged generation who said that their job see because as money to public services is slashed you've got the very very young who are worried that some things like no serene's and provisions for education will be caught and of course manchester have the mike the student population you've got a lot of students turned out much like in all the marches that we've seen across the country turned out to protest against the rising cost of education i spake to
6:08 pm
some of the people who are here to us and just why they thought it was important to turn out today and here's what they told me i think it's important we send a message to the government to covering all sport in particular that the people on the road supposed woodies codes to police overseas and. to put we should let the government know the majority of people opposed to what we do you know you'll show you. a page to show about if you join the chinese schools that what it meant to try and build a movement what they would bring this government down and bring in a government that doesn't offer working people now look to the banas that you can see here around me are calling for a strike on the thirtieth of november they're calling for a general strike the public sector workers to down to leave was to show the government just exactly what it would be like if public sector workers didn't in fact show up for work in the morning so that's what they're planning to do a lot of the biggest unions in the country unison yes they have all turned out here
6:09 pm
today to say we will down tools on the thirtieth of november unless you promise that you won't make these deep cuts in public sector for. i think that you'll put a date in the middle of the prime minister david. ortiz laura i've been reporting for us there now the discontent in the u.k. is only now gathering pace but protests in debt ridden greece have been going on for months economic doomsday moves closer for athens with a vital rescue payment delayed in the country quickly running out of cash. plus strife and for statehood the future of palestine is a clouded in intrigue with the shadow of an me in to us a veto hanging over its bid at the u.n. security council. the plan to reshuffle into the put in madrid of tandem has been the highlight of this week's headlines the sudden departure of the longest serving now former finance minister also gave the russian press plenty to chew on in fact dmitri medvedev felt compelled to explain to the media face to face the reasons
6:10 pm
behind his decision not to run for a second term in office and r.t.c. cutting about travel reports the pre-election period in russia could hold even more surprises yet. this week's headlines have been told that if putin putin made that it the news of the jumps was brought up polemic switch russia hasn't seen for quite some time while some criticized others applauded the tandems deal and the king's oh photo shop rolled out some of their best work yet with the general mood being that the deal had been done long ago but it was an exciting for just a few days until the first rich shuffles in the corridors of power began to move the lake and if you think your views on russia's economic agenda differ from mine as president if you can resign him in the above just because of my opinions do differ from yours but only take such a decision after i've talked to the prime minister has been to most observers you
6:11 pm
can talk to whoever you want including the prime minister but as long as i'm the president i make these decisions. was the surprise right now between the president and putin's longtime ally aleksey could wron left many questioning is there a split in the tandem at the solution is the situation with mr cooder it is a matter of discipline in government service we are a presidential republic not a parliamentary ones it implements the president's policies if you don't agree you should step down meanwhile many read it not as a sign of a split but of a new maturity in russia's democracy i believe is wrong most were mostly a wish for thing carol all the bottles are born else these people probably remember the times of a hobo overthrow for there was a rift inside the port of buell which ultimately was one of the reasons for the collapse of the u.s.s.r. and i remember before coming to power generated gave an interview where he
6:12 pm
basically said that russia will not survive another conflict inside the elites so from the very beginning i do believe that there was a serious rift the big news of putin yet again running for proud. didn't brought up so many questions that need treatment but have had to meet top t.v. hats to cross the t.'s and dot the ice storm so you know of course it's nice to know that people trust me as president and that my approval ratings are quite high under current circumstances but i also know that prime minister putin undoubtedly remains the most popular politician in our country and his rating is even higher than the election campaign has just started which ask ourselves a simple question what if our people rejected. what will happen to these decisions by the convention these decisions are merely the party's recommendation to vote for those people that's all the choice is made by the people pushing us and these are not me a word to top saluki true for any politician of any political fields who may lose
6:13 pm
an election but many questions are still in the air like why would a politician like nutriment that if his approval rating is still so high in russia not seek reelection and what will the face of the new cabinet of ministers look like under him should he become pm immediately after the united russia congress many rejoiced in the fact that the country's top political queen is finally over and they can go about their usual business but this week has shown that when it comes to the chess game of process and politics there are many more moves to be made before the final makeup of the new government is no it's to do that shilpa art . for the full version of the interview with president medvedev you can always log on to our website r t v dot com. the greek government says it's a budget deficit will be cut this year and next but it will still miss targets set

by the e.u. and international monetary fund. latest austerity measure is putting thirty thousand civil service staff on labor reserve by the end of the year and reducing their pay the move. to please the creditors and to get them to hand over a billion euro and installment needed to avoid the nation going into bankruptcy next month international inspectors from the i.m.f. e.u. and european central bank are now enough to decide whether greece should get that money but as our teaser first reports the public long ago lost hope that a bailout will save the country's crippled economy. greece has been the poster child of the year quite with germany baiting to expand the bailout fund the country looks that's to get that much needed cash injection with the help come with some condition here in greece the people say the price they're being made to pay is simply too high burning that. is deadline day for the first to be hit with the

greek government's new special tax it's one of the measures they kiss in place to try to secure the next tranche of money the country needs to avoid bankruptcy the extra tax which is about another three percent from people's annual income supposed to help plug some of the massive deficit in the budget nothing more than a year's salary cuts rises in living costs people here already at breaking point the last two years almost. thirty percent of his. people's desperation has become increasingly evident on the streets of greece the violence is repeatedly breaking out between riot place protesters. even more clashes his parliament and feted in yet another austerity measure the fall of any property tax many people in greece now question just who it is the thing control

unfortunately. very early in your resume are the bankers. there. is much that from european central bank bankers are not being shared folders are not being. called to pay again and again and again are the. taxpayers in the euro zone despite germany having dated positively to expand the size and power of the european pan out to fund the ready critics are questioning whether that will be enough insights now turn to the many challenges usain still faces if the program will move from greece and will start touching crowther european countries then the german banks to the end for sure even germany about the we series the more skilled people in the european you know. will be affected you will find a solution to be not just for greece but for all the european union countries with

pos measures failing to have the facts it is political leaders continue to struggle to convince that public the future of the euro is a still hangs in the balance but these protests. continue many people hated the greece is a country now at risk of having not only a financial but it democratic deficit as well sir. outside the parliament building in athens. egypt's ruling military council has given in to the demands of protesters and political parties and agreed to make changes to the election law there were fears current rules could enable supporters of ousted president mubarak to come back to power in november's problem entering elections the decision comes after friday's massive protest thousands thronged tougher your square in an attempt to reclaim the revolution demanding a transfer of power to civilian rule and an end to emergency law parties and you see now we went to cairo to see what else is driving people back onto the streets.
6:18 pm
because we knew that. had come to egypt a new chapter of freedom and democracy don't judge a book by its cover when reading post mubarak egypt it's between the lines where you'll find the new chapter hasn't been published edited or slightly revised we still have the supreme council of the on poor says those. i cannot say that they have been. in any sense giving this country towards democracy barak may be gone but his policies are not for hosni mubarak's case is ongoing at this tribe you know new figures from human rights watch claims more civilians have been forced to face military trial for the last six months some twelve thousand during the entire thirty year rule of mubarak average civilians are giving five to you know seven years in prison
6:19 pm
a lot of torture has occurred since scaf has come into power. actor ali simply doesn't clown around when it comes to the supreme council or scaf he has taken part in protests since day one and still has scars from being detained because the books are much worse he said very long they told people they had to stick it humbly for months after that i was shocked to the stun gun and beaten with a baton on the head least only because a well known and now most of us leave the country for thirty years according to you know if i have to seek asylum at all to stay fight for freedom like mubarak skaf gets the supported needs to rule egypt from abroad the aid that we get from the u.s. that one point five billion a year the easier krissy is from from the usa. and most of it entirely goes to the to the supreme court to the to the army you know the scout and while the west coast

history books will change for the better the arab spring. is a massive opportunity to spread peace prosperity democracy egypt sions are left reading the writing on the wall in many areas it's the same as before going to fare from in some areas it's getting more worse and he's now a r t congress thousands of people remain trapped in the besieged libyan city of syria has fighting between forces loyal to the national transitional council and remaining the troops continues its plunging the city deeper into a humanitarian crisis people are fleeing the town driven from their homes by fierce fighting and a lack of essential aid agencies say those injured and trapped are in desperate need of medical help with people dying in the main hospital because of oxygen and fuel shortages anti-war activist brian becker says this shows nato mission in libya is doing little to protect civilians. clearly they're not protecting civilians when
6:21 pm
they're bombing cities that are considered to be pro khadafi when they're killing people not because they've done something wrong but because their own political beliefs are contrary to what nato wants in terms of the kind of government they want for libya so i think that they need to be brought to justice i think though unless there's a very strong international movement for human rights in this instance i think it's unlikely they will be brought to court and the goal of the nato powers is to carry out regime change so that the khadafy government is gone once and for ever and that there will be a new government that will not necessarily be more democratic or more humane but will be an ally or i would say in fact a proxy a client perhaps a puppet of western powers in this country that has the largest oil reserves in all of africa the ninth largest oil reserves in the world according to russia's

belgrade can use to deliver food and petrol to the tens of thousands of serbs living in northern kosovo the course of the serbs have been very gating the road since july in response to the kosovo police checkpoints which enforce the trade embargo between belgrade and of itself on tuesday the situation turned critical again clashes between the barricading serbs and the k. four troops led to multiple injuries on both sides ok for blamed of course it was serbs for starting the violence but injured alex on the beach a father of two saw it differently for this. we were standing by the barricade when the soldiers started shouting and shooting at us i didn't know what they were shooting with so i got scared and started running away and i was hit on the shoulder and it turned out to be a paraphrase of my lung that nato forces also claim they used only rubber bullets into a gas against a protesting mold this was quickly rejected by doctors of its fuelling speculation

the u.n. . city council started considering of the palestinians a bid for statehood on friday it was officially submitted by the palestinian leader mahmoud abbas last week a total of eight nine out of fifteen votes in the security council are needed to push the application through the u.s. already said it will use its veto power to block the process but even if washington blocks the bid the palestinians could still get an elevated legal status in the u.n. general assembly where they have a majority of support palestinian palestinian leader mahmoud abbas has told r.t. arabic he is a concerned the u.s. will pressure u.n. security council members to vote against the bid the full interview is coming up at four am right here on our team. we knew in advance and we would be notified that washington will use its veto during the voting in all of its korea that the u.s. as the dominant power wants to extend its support to israel but what concerns us

most is that the u.s. wants to force all the countries that took their money in the general assembly because in particular the members of the u.n. security council to vote against palestinian membership in the u.n. says they keep. all the member states all the security council have the right to use as i would put it use their right to me so of course such a decision will be regrettable and that full interview with mahmoud abbas will be at four am greenwich mean time i'll be back with a recap of our top headlines in just a few minutes. it
