3:01 pm
saturday's brutal showdown on brooklyn bridge that saw more than seven hundred people arrested the movement called occupy wall street is promising more marches against corporate greed and social inequality artie's medina port not a caught up with some of those involved. a new season in a different nation the arab spring has become america's autumn and on saturday new york's brooklyn bridge reminded many of a scene from egypt to here square. nearly eight hundred protesters were trapped cuffed arrested and jailed as thousands of activists continued their second week of occupy wall street demonstrations the grassroots movement is campaigning against social inequality and corporate influence over u.s. politics in the interim police conduct against peaceful protesters has come into question. just last week
3:02 pm
a new york city police officer attacked occupy wall street protesters with pepper spray prompting public outrage and an internal affairs investigation many didn't believe that there would be another dramatic confrontation as we can after what happened last weekend after four women were pepper sprayed while they were corralled by the police after the n.y.p.d. used heavy handed tactics punching some protesters i think many people didn't expect that there would be something like that again this weekend though i have heard no reports pepper spray being used there were thousands of people stopped and hundreds arrested arrested activists were charged with disorderly conduct and summons to appear in criminal court. by sunday hundreds appeared back on wall street determined to continue their fight against corporate domination once you are right not to breed to be arrested any more the whole enjoy or control of the disappearance baby's. here's when that happens there are credible possibilities
3:03 pm
that are open to us and suddenly you can imagine a different world you believe you can be an agent of change the group says it aims to raise national awareness and change america's economic disparity occupy wall street describes itself as a resistance movement inspired in part by counterparts we can file be believe our brothers and sisters all over the world the arab spring in greece and spain and we can see that it did send a powerful message ordinary people are not going to stand for corporate greed anymore and that we're getting up and we're doing something about it. and the reason these activists are doing something on wall street rather than washington is because they say you have to follow the money begin where the largest campaign contributions donations and lobby groups come from its corporate presidencies we were told it was for. for you know maybe four years old. bush.
3:04 pm
before that his father the bush dynasty i mean corporate greed goes all the way up to the president i think this is where the are going to be impulsive it starts. it is true that these demonstrators come here with a variety of different messages but what is uniting what unifies them is a growing frustration over the u.s. economy social inequality and corporate influence on u.s. politics these protesters say if american leaders can't act it will be the american citizens that stand up for their rights reporting from wall street more important part see here. well we have standing by live from new york to give us an update we're still seeing major action in new york you've been following developments one of the protesters planning right now. well what is planning to take place the next few hours is another demonstration of protest by wall street but this. i want to
3:05 pm
take place directly outside of city hall now the purpose of this protest demonstrators organizers say is to call on the city to drop all charges against eight hundred protesters that were arrested saturday evening we saw images of those arrests in my packages just played out those arrests took place of course when occupy wall street protesters marched from wall street to the brooklyn bridge onto the brooklyn bridge it was a very peaceful manner but of course many many people were arrested there were some clashes between police officers and protesters it was a bit of a chaotic scene it was the largest arrests to take place in one single day here in new york city since the two thousand who are republican national convention i mean an arrest of nearly eight hundred people in one evening it is a big deal quite a lot to go down here in the big powerful and it's simply a situation that has not occurred in
3:06 pm
a very long time so of course there is expected to be a big turnout at least at the city hall protests from what we are being told in addition to that some new faces that make be seen in this gathering will be u.s. veterans soldiers members of the marines and army that have said they will be coming out to protect some of the protesters that many believe are being aggressively confronted by the new york city police department we saw an incident where women were pepper sprayed in the face by a police officer a few weeks ago and then of course these arrests that took place on the brooklyn bridge saturday evening so according to what's being reported there are some marines some members of the army that will be coming out and those that support occupy wall street and its movement so clearly this group is expanding it's getting bigger it's getting much more. attention and not only are demonstrations planned to
3:07 pm
be planned for today but there's more demonstrations planned to continue throughout the week so course we will be following that story we will be at the demo that's going to be taking place at city hall and of course we'll keep our viewers up to it certainly thanks very much for bringing us the very latest. live there from new york. and on our web site r.t. dot com we're interested in your opinion and the occupy wall street protesters and so far the majority believe we're witnessing america's own arab spring less than a quarter consider the protesters are victims of police repression fifteen percent think they are rent a crowd agents and a minority feel they are nothing more than troublemakers again log on to argue dot com and have your say. well earlier i spoke to alex and i told you who is an associate professor at brooklyn college and someone who actually took part of the recounts rally and he told me the ultimate aim of the protesters is to create a different political climate in the country. well there's not
3:08 pm
a lot of mystery about what's going on down there there's a clear sense the united states the power of wall street is completely out of control and that they are responsible for a commune merican economy and i think young people in particular feel that their futures have been. before the our regions salaries and bonuses by these wall street executives they're looking for a long term solutions i don't think they have short term measures that they are healing government to address but i think in large or what they're trying to do is to create a political climate where a number of political actors can start to talk seriously about security reforms that hopefully can break this kind of cool marriage between economic and political leaks in our city. and in about twenty minutes time marty's peter lavelle and his cross talk yes discuss who if anyone is influencing the decisions taken by governments here's a preview. government. is not doing what its public wants someone it centers groups
3:09 pm
want the interest groups will lead to unions. or more big corporations. labor unions or trade you makes an excellent go ahead steve. jobs what an extraordinary. year let's remember one simple fact right in the united states today in the private sector that dominates our economy six point nine percent of workers are represented by a trade union ninety three and point one percent of our working class in the private sector has no union to explain government policy based on the union movement as any and powerless as this is a chance to see. the forces of libya's new rulers continue their siege of the two remaining gadhafi strongholds we spoke to an eyewitness
3:10 pm
a woman from tripoli who asked that we call her was in bollywood they had a date that is a day ago and she was speaking in a low voice and fear for her life and she said a former rebels care little about the wellbeing of civilians. clinton. clinton. would be. his house and be killed. just because he's supporting gadhafi because if you want the statue. i have to keep the bullies the ones i'm. glad it's just really hard to believe he'd just come. to the truth. it is going to be something we cannot lose because this is. actually true. for me and all they care about is history to student ratio.
3:11 pm
this story i'm joined live by patrick henningsen managing editor of the news website twenty first century war mr henningsen is still very chaotic there on the ground but also on a political level libya's interim leaders say that they will not stay in power once the gadhafi strongholds are defeated and of course this is a consequence of an internal split between essentially islamised and liberals and right now the war is not yet over and we're already seeing a power struggle are they in fact that capable of forming a government. i think if you have to have any indication to what the future's going to look like i think all you have to do is look over to egypt. you west in the west very much supported the overthrow of hosni mubarak and what you get in his place you get a military government and that military government is still in power and will be in power for some time and the west's idea as to why this is justified in will be the same in tripoli is that it's not stable yet is what they'll say and when stability comes and we'll give you democracy so i believe that they will stay in power for an
3:12 pm
interim time that interim time can be up to a year or two years it's difficult to say this point yes speaking about a democracy in libya it's very much a tribal country does it have any chance of being a democratic nation state realistically speaking perhaps in the long run but perhaps there's a chance. well you know it's really difficult because the seeds of the seeds of this country are now basically what's going to grow from the seat of foreign intervention century the nato nato has given air cover and military cover to a rebel faction that was not chosen or elected by the people mostly from the east of the country or from benghazi so they don't have a mandate and what you will have i think is a protracted power struggle you have also have the tribal backlash which is going to occur in libya as a result of this war you see this so you see the same thing in iraq when it was
3:13 pm
bombed invaded in occupied and you have a vichy government in tripoli now much like you had a vichy government in baghdad and morning as well and do you have stability in afghanistan we have stability in iraq you know we don't have stability there's an appearance of stability maybe in iraq after what seven years are you going to have the same thing in libya most likely yes the only stability i think the west is really interested in is stable enough for western companies to come in and take the west take contracts for british companies american companies french companies and trying companies there carving up the country well let's go back to the situation after acting civilians there any i mean nato is saying that it's not planning to end the operations in libya while the civilians are still in danger from your point of view who is posing the real danger to civilians there are reports that thousands are fleeing both asserts and money when it because of shelling and water shortages
3:14 pm
so who is the real danger what is the real danger. well you know the thing that really brought this issue home to me was the report that i read about a fourteen year old boy insert died on the operating table because the power went out because the hospital generator was out of fuel why because they've put a bull ring around the city no fuel can get into the city so people are dying from this and lives are being lost and i believe obviously what they're doing with search is much like they did with the flu just they're trying to empty the city so that only there's only a military. presence left an insurgent now insurgent presence left in sirte and they're either going to carpet bomb it or just shell it for a week or two until there's nothing left but a pile of dust obviously civilians are at their highest risk from nato airstrikes and also from rebels who are untrained unorganized basically join gangs of
3:15 pm
sort of paramilitaries who don't have any sort of solid leadership from what we can determine their leader just died last week ok just briefly now what do you think is a possibility of nato staying in there back after the fighting ends. i think anything that's said through official channels right now i e washington or whitehall or in paris i think you can pretty much discount it is still basically say whatever they have to say as they've said they're going to pull the troops out of iraq in may of two thousand and three mission accomplished george bush landed on an aircraft carrier and it was a big big promotion and a big celebration and here we are ten years eight nine years later i think we will see nato i predict if i would put money down right now at the bet shop i predict there's going to be nato troops in there well into next year we will see u.n. blue helmets in certain parts of the country and i think. then they'll keep advisors and they'll be hundreds or thousands of these advisors and there will
3:16 pm
still be an air presence so i believe because there's going to be a rebellion could be forces are not defeated yet and this is the idea that we've been given from the c.n.n. the foxes and the b.b.c. is the world's it's all over no it's not all over they're still they're still fighting going on and there's also a huge power struggle within the trans national council of these rebels who are basically fighting for whatever piece of the pie they can get they don't know how long they're going to be in power so they're trying to solidify their own personal interests while they haven't even won the war yet ok well thanks very much for your analysis there patrick had a sense managing editor of twenty first century website. well the two other news now the former vice president of a former oil giant you course has died in moscow at age of thirty nine the city under the sun young once the partner of me. was convicted of embezzlement in two thousand and six he was released on bail two years later as his health significantly worse and it has been reported that acts on young had aids because of

payments america for two hundred million dollars in response to palestinian statehood bid at the un but he officials say they want to follow suit the state had application was submitted to the un last week and is now being considered palestinian leader mahmoud abbas told r.t. arabic the bid should not be the same as something that questions israel's right to exist for the full interview is coming up next hour but here's a preview for you. the end of the we do not want to challenge the legitimacy of the state of israel israel is of granite state and we have recognized it over the arab peace initiative had been adopted fifty seven arab and islamic states would have followed suit and recognized israel and that means that we support the existence of the state of israel and do not want to challenge its legitimacy or seek its own solution the only thing that we want to challenge the legitimacy of the policy of occupation legitimacy of israeli settlement activities this is all rights and we

than other emerging markets chris weaver from talk a dialogue believes that skewed to structural weakness in the country's economy we have a relatively weak domestic economic base compared to other big emerging markets are just we are much more vulnerable to a global recession because of the potential weakness in the oil price and the price and demand for other commodities and the second reason why we see more of fall into that is because russia doesn't have a strong enough to mystic capital base. you know because we don't have you know extensive structured pension funds and structures and if you schemes as is the case in most other markets we are very reliant on foreign capital flows to a much greater extent than other emerging markets so when there is any reason for investors to be nervous about global events they will take their money out of emerging markets and we do not have the substitution of domestic money which countries like brazil india and china do have. to take
