ordinary people are not going to stand for or for corporate greed anymore and now we're getting up and we're doing something about it. three weeks into the occupy wall street protest the movement is still going strong from coast to coast mouth of gatherings are shutting down streets resulting in a rather than allegations of police brutality so is the arab spring making way for the american on the. only way to get the media to notice is to be disobedient you have the job to get people to notice and mainstream media is finally taking notice of the occupy wall street movement and taking shots at the protesters objectives so is maybe this being the only way to get the mainstream media to shut up and listen
8:01 pm
. and it's ours dose of reality while greece is on the brink of default and the u.s. economy is being sucked into a black hole maybe it's time to look east for some answers will pay a visit to mr jim rogers. good evening it's monday october third eight pm here in washington d.c. i'm lauren lyster and you're watching r.t. now occupy wall street protests continue in new york despite a weekend that saw more than seven hundred activists arrested and jailed for marching on the brooklyn bridge now today protesters remain camped out in laura manhattan standing strong going into a third week standing their ground over wall street grievances now aside from questions over whether police were too aggressive with the weekend's arrests the questions remain about just what we're seeing with this movement altogether is
8:02 pm
a radical left answer to the tea party will it be a turning point in american history could we be seeing the start of a true of illusion channeling the arab spring that the occupy wall street movement claims to be inspired by in response to the inequality poverty joblessness and corporate power in this country we'll get to all of those questions but first report i was out there so she has a story of just what went on. a new season in a different nation the arab spring has become america's author and on saturday new york's brooklyn bridge reminded many of a scene from egypt to here square. nearly eight hundred protesters were trapped arrested and jailed as thousands of activists continued their second week of occupy wall street demonstration the grassroots movement is campaigning against social inequality and influence over u.s.
8:03 pm
politics in the interim police conduct against peaceful protesters has come into question. just last week and york city police officer shot occupy wall street protesters the pepper spray prompting public outrage and an internal affairs investigation many didn't believe that there would be another dramatic confrontation this weekend after what happened last weekend after four women were kept were sprayed while they were corralled by the police after the n.y.p.d. used heavy handed tactics punching some protesters i think many people didn't expect that there would be something like that again this weekend so i have no reports pepper spray being used there were thousands of people stopped and hundreds arrested arrested activists were charged with disorderly conduct and summons to appear in criminal court. fight sunday hundreds of pure stock on wall street
8:04 pm
determined to continue their fight against corporate domination but you already not agreed to be arrested anymore and the whole entire control of the police state disappears when that happens there are a credible possibilities that are open to us and suddenly you can imagine a different world and you do you can be an agent of change the group says it aims to raise national awareness and change the. arabic speaking on the history occupy wall street describes itself as a resistance movement inspired in part by its counterpart making phone. the leader of our brothers and sisters the love of the world of the hairspring in greece in spain and we can see that this kind of powerful message for dinner people are not going to stand for corporate greed anymore and that we're giving up with something about it. and the reason these activists are doing something on wall street rather than washington is because they say you have to follow the money begin where the
8:05 pm
largest campaign contributions donations and lobby groups come from and filtered for them we were told obama was for change we got four more you know maybe four years hopefully. bush again before that his father the bush dynasty i mean corporate greed goes all the way people did and i think it is worth it because the arteries in the main culprits are straight it is true that these demonstrators come here with friday of different messages what is uniting about what unifies them is a growing fresh breeze over the u.s. economy social inequality and corporate influence on us policy these protesters say if america's leaders can't stop it will be the american citizens that stand up for their rights reporting from wall street reform party. so that's what happened at the battle on the brooklyn bridge and what are we seeing take shape in lower manhattan exactly and spread across the country as far as the movement is concerned
8:06 pm
earlier i spoke with marcel carty a rap artist and occupy wall street protester he was the rusted at the protests over the weekend and told me that well cops. well the first thing that i want to do before we get into the details of the situation is just to address the role of the police in a capitalist society and we have to be clear on that the role of the police in a calculus society is to protect the property owners the billion is the bankers the ones who are referring to as the one percent so it's no coincidence that while they were locking up our seven hundred brothers and sisters j.p. morgan chase gave the four point six million dollar donation to the end live p d to crush this movement or any movement the evolves out of this i don't think that's a quid students at all now as far as the march it was a peaceful demonstration that started at liberty plaza and we decided that we were going to go to brooklyn now it was an act of civil disobedience because we were
8:07 pm
actually given this street to march down the title of the new york post today on the front page is something like given fair warning basically that you know the police said that they gave us a warning that we could not be on the bridge the we were going to get arrested if we indeed did go down that route but what actually ended up happening is that we were escorted by the n.y.p.d. across the brooklyn bridge or at least to the point where we were stopped by this police barricade so it was a very interesting situation when all of a sudden people began to get arrested i was at the front of the march at that point and there were three brothers who went before me and that was the first that i heard or that i actually saw that people were going to get arrested i had no idea that that was going to transpire they said they made another announcement i was right there at the front i didn't even hear that you know so it was that infinitely
8:08 pm
premeditated entrapment on behalf of the n.y.p.d. and so you're think of that my p. d. has or they think couple of videos and they have warnings that there were all her instead and that cop that loud and clear that they were in the protest areas so are you thing out. i didn't hear anything of the sort and when i was walking on the brooklyn bridge there were many police officers who walked alongside of me were trying to get to the very front of the march they didn't say anything except perhaps excuse me brother can i get by that's it no mention of you're not supposed to be here you're going to get arrested again i was at the very front of the march when we got stopped by this police barricade and i could not hear a word that was being said supposedly the n.y.p.d. is saying that you are all going to get arrested and if you do not walk you will be dragged i didn't even hear that ok you didn't know that he told you that you can go on the profile you like marching on the bridge where parents today are. well we
8:09 pm
were going to march to brooklyn in order to you know expand occupy wall street essentially in order to you know bring it to other boroughs in the same way that now occupy wall street has spread to los angeles is spread to chicago is spread to washington d.c. it's all over the country you know last week here and i talked about how this has the potential to be the embryo of a very broad fightback movement and i think that just in the past seven days it's actually grown it's grown a lot and i think this is very exciting a question to the n.y.p.d. is did you really think that it was a tactically intelligent decision to arrest seven hundred people on the brooklyn bridge perhaps they thought that they were going to suppress the will of the people by doing that but i think it actually had the opposite effect i think that what we saw for example in the jails of new york on saturday night we turn those into organizing centers just like prisons are cut across this country can be turned into schools of revolution so i don't think that it suppressed anybody's will if
8:10 pm
anything it made the people more militant who are involved in occupy wall street and it may goes across the country who may be beginning to see that this is a way that they can get involved in fighting for change say you know way maybe it's time for me to stand up as well it's interesting and just. clarify for our viewers what you thought of the beginning of our show those are your opinions you you obviously feel like the police that their goals are to protect the red shirt and not you guys and you protesters on the pressure just want to clarify that and also we don't know why jamie diamond gave that donation to that mikey but of course you pointed out you know one possibility as you see at but i do want to ask because because one of the things that mainstream media has alleged in some of their reports is that the protesters are disorganized or that this isn't really you know going anywhere it's a bunch of hippies so i'm curious to you because you obviously feel very militant about this where do you see this going well i see the masses of
8:11 pm
people wakening i see the end of people being passive or feeling as if they can't fight back would be have no type of power organize with the answer coalition which stands for now to stop war and racism and we've been organizing around issues such as the war we've been organizing around issues of unemployment issues of housing of being human rights the poor educational system basically people not having their basic human rights in the richest country in the history of the world so very clearly there's definitely people. who have different opinions in there's conflicting political trends but i think that as the masses come out then we can begin having those deeper ideological conversations about just exactly what what it is that we want but what i'm clear on is that we have to build a very broad movement for the society that we actually deserve to live in ok and just i want to keep this going for one more minute just short answer if you could i
8:12 pm
know you said that you don't think that the police gain from those arrests but what do you think you gain when you get arrested in this kind of a protest. well like i said we turned those jails into centers of organizing you know i got to know everybody who i was on the bridge with so much better and i don't think i would have had that opportunity otherwise so it was definitely a very. energizing experience that charge me up it made me more committed to the cause you know and now i really want to see this movement succeed now that i didn't before charges me up because me so much energy so much vision to go forward and yes or no do you think that this is you a lot or do you think this is you and the seven hundred plus other people that were arrested on that bridge i can't really speak for for anybody else but i do feel that there was that sentiment there you know there was definitely the sense of camaraderie the sense of brotherhood sisterhood and the fact that we're going to
8:13 pm
persevered and we are going to change you know people all over the world are doing that and we need to do that right here in the belly of the beast because this is the country those those are the real criminals the biggest criminals in the world who live on organize on wall street you know worked on behalf of some of the biggest parasites in the world all right well we certainly appreciate you coming on the show and sharing your story that was marcel hardy a rap artist and wall street protester who was arrested over the weekend now our correspondent in new york she took a look at given what we're seeing with occupy wall street and how so many of these protesters feel just disenfranchised all together they don't feel like their vote count they don't feel like they have the money influence politics she looked into if civil disobedience is really the only way that americans like this average folks have left to have their voices heard here's what she found. taking the big apple by
8:14 pm
storm. getting arrested by the hundreds. getting netted and pepper sprayed in the face. spending nights and days on the far from welcoming streets of the financial district. that's right these demonstrators are paying to get their outrage across to those holding reins of financial and political power on americans make up most of the country don't have access to corporate power and the media don't have many options to get there we prefer to take specifics that fight for change of the web are largely getting ignored and marginalized this artist and activist has been arrested twice i didn't expect to be arrested i didn't expect to get hit by the police. you know get locked in incarcerated with no. cause for this movement seems to me i feel ignored for the first two weeks of
8:15 pm
occupying wall street the people movement started taking tougher measures by getting bigger and louder the only way to get the media to notice is that you disagree and you have. the people and. the map the rest have built up popular support for the movement but you know them for putting us through some type of abuse because it's helping our you know it's bringing working with some have sacrificed more than hours in jail to fight against wealthy many people have quit their jobs and have come here that already have it the corporate media week three into the campout either does not pay much attention here the sunday front pages of some of america's most read newspapers or ridicules polls to form and the substance of the gathering is equal parts but surely body odor and urine they're more concerned with. brain washing people american idol sports drama and pretty much. anything to serve as
8:16 pm
a traction other than the important issue right now this is a big if and notice quite of course first term political elite it's tougher than ever for those against the system to get attention would even some police officers ready to admit this protest is the way you know that's. the only billable way to do it i said no to the occupy wall street movement promises to grow in the months to come in history shows that the voice of the people can't be neglected wherever they see it sure can have archie new york now it's not just occupy wall street the movement has spread to cities all across the country our teams are mongol and i was at occupy los angeles over the weekend where he said more than a thousand people showed up and hundreds camped out i asked him if he got the sense that this was just a flash in the pan or if this can turn into something much larger. well or and i had this conversation with many of the people at this protest and and many shared
8:17 pm
the same sentiments as that young woman that this could be something that just prompts a revolution here in america whether that's a peaceful revolution or for relief from these protesters who were peaceful but a lot of people are still unsure i mean it seems like there's still some fear over whether people should stand up but what we're seeing is that this argued by law street protests it's going nationwide it's not just happened in los angeles in new york it's happening over one hundred cities now i mean there's going to be demonstrations in d.c. in los angeles throughout this week and in over one hundred cities in america it seems like this are pupae wall street sentiment is really gravitating in so whether we'll see a revolution like the young woman said it is going to be up to the people but obviously it is a very strong movement that a lot of people can stand behind and as you're talking about a growing movement some of the protesters we've seen and i know i've seen them in new york i don't know if they were in l.a. too they had signs saying american brain kind of comparing this to what we've seen
8:18 pm
an arab spring and even on occupy wall street web site they say that they're inspired by what we're seeing in the arab world and then as revolutions there did people talk about that in l.a. . oh most definitely laura now a lot of the people that are tara to you mentioned the middle east a lot of the people got their inspiration from the protesters in greece who are the austerity measures just the road in their way of life and people talk about egypt part talk about tunisia and the similar problems that those people were facing when it comes to economic suppression social suppression civil rights things of that nature and they see the similar problems have been doing here in america perhaps not to the same degree yet these people see that these problems are global and they really really draw a lot of inspiration from this and those are the types of people that really do see this as the possibility of an american revolution happening here it's really
8:19 pm
interesting with something possibly that bad i'm curious i know you were out there were covering us but what kind of media attention is this getting and l.a. from the mainstream i know today at least from what i can see on the t.v. they seem to be much fascinated by the trial of michael jackson's doctor. well that's right lauren over the weekend demonstrations here got minimal coverage some of the news outlets kind of downplayed the numbers and downplayed the significance of it we saw a little bit more coverage of it today that people are actually happy now but it seems like the media is only fixated on the michael jackson show her on the conrad murray trial the doctor who is accused of killing michael jackson i mean we see media from all over the world right across the street there are hundreds of people camped out which no one has paid attention to but it appears that the more that they stay camped out there the media will not be able to ignore him and and even then just this morning while reporters from across the country were trying to do
8:20 pm
their live reports on the conrad murray trial we saw the occupy los angeles demonstrators marched down to the courthouse and with their chance they drowned out the live reports of reporters from c.n.n. and the local affiliates here a los angeles so even if the media the mainstream media refuses to pay attention to the message refuses to pay attention to this movement it appears that the occupy wall street protesters and those showing solidarity with occupy wall street are definitely letting their voices be heard that's our cue correspondent ramon the lindo now u.s. lawmaker are going after china as a currency manipulator again this tends to be kind of popular in washington so is this legitimate or is this just china bashing for political reasons and also as more people worry about a global economy risking lapsing into recession what's going to be the tipping point and is there any stopping it tell me make sense of all of these big economic
8:21 pm
issues going on right now is the legendary investor and author jim rogers hi jen thanks so much for being on the show i love lauren nice to see you all the way from singapore early in the morning for you so this night here in washington a bill actually cleared a hurdle in. senate that would impose tariffs on chinese imports and penalize china as a currency manipulator now bashing china as a currency manipulator tends to be pretty popular in washington especially with unemployment stuck at nine percent so is that what we're seeing or is this legitimate their present all they're doing is so that the media will cover it is not me you're straight and you're covering it as well everybody else is you if you read the bill you see there's no doubt they leave it up to the part of the treasury to determine what to do but knowing this could be terribly terribly dangerous if we turn it into a trade war we had a trade war and i mean thirty said let the great depression we already have small
8:22 pm
signs of trade wars breaking out was ill france or other places now america this could be very dangerous in the end ok jim i want to get back to the serious stuff but are you saying that basically i'm a sucker. you know missing one. hundred thirty five people in congress who paid a lot of money and if you just stay out well that's all they do this and they get it you know it's not serious and if it turns into a trade war it is the most momentous thing of two thousand and eleven trade wars lee always lead to wars nobody wins trade wars except you know generals wind up biting cold war zone is not this is very dangerous no you're right because the problem is making them make themselves look good when in fact they may be having a problem now to china and all they manipulate certainly has said it's currency i don't have official right but to their defense they have been opening it up close six years now nearly every quarter they do more and more to make it more
8:23 pm
international you traitor and it goes beyond its own level when i do it the way china is doing so i would you want to stop it i would do it right now i'd like to see free float not just i don't listen and they don't listen to anybody they don't listen to you jan now i know that i mean i can't rest i think what thirty percent since two thousand and five so my question for you you're talking about a trade war what would happen in order for that to happen. if america does put out that the chinese the chinese have various weapons disposal they could stop buying american government. debt interest rates in america would go through the roof badly of the u.s. dollar would go down a lot perhaps a lot or at least a little this would not be good for anybody including for china but what happens when i whenever people get slapped in the face they always think they have to scrap back yeah well along with what you're saying with the u.s.
8:24 pm
dollar that's something that people have been saying for a while that the u.s. dollar is going to be hit with all of this bad economic news and any number of scenarios that have happened why is that. two full disclosure i own the u.s. dollar on your network or that i own the u.s. dollar one reason it hasn't is because first of all there were so many people who stole the dollar that all the people to short the dollar they got to bring that wasn't back that and the rest of the world through and many people wrongly in my view wrongly leap to the u.s. dollar as a safe haven i always i don't know didn't pay when i was a kid i just assume everybody else is going to run there it could go much higher for a while so you want to because you think everybody else has done. i don't know whether they're done that's your whether you're a good reporter i'm sure i know it because i know that standard reaction is because of confusion to run to the u.s.
8:25 pm
dollar it is the wrong thing to do in my view but i know the old adage you know what so i've got it i really didn't live as i told you all before was ok everybody was so restless to go into dollars and i have failed in my career when everybody's own one is bad but you should go to the other side for a while so i told you i thought it was because of the pessimism all right because of the pessimism there's still a lot of pessimism right now and a lot has to do with that you're always very harsh on the u.s. because of u.s. debt and bill gross of pimco today was saying that essentially sovereign balance sheets resemble an overweight diabetic on the verge of a heart attack if you agree with that what is going to be the heart attack that tips the global economy into recession well i certainly hope you agree with it largely because the fact there's a very serious problem the u.s. is the worst with the largest debtor nation in the history of the world but many european nations have to probably the world has run
8:26 pm
a huge huge debts and it has forty or fifty years we're going to have to pay the piper and we're paying them now they'll have to be exactly right the world's got some serious serious problem space and i don't know how it's got i know i should be resolved but i'm afraid it's not going to be resolved without more pain and more suffering so what do you think will be the tipping point with those sovereign balance sheets that are diabetics on the verge of a heart attack which country which country i wish i were that smart you should watch r.t. you get your figure out which ones will go first that's ok i know that a lot of stuff i have so short stocks in the u.s. and europe and it marks the market so whichever one goes bust i hope i will save myself do you think it would be europe or the us. well it is more likely to be in europe just because they're right there with a lot of attention on them right now but as i said before the u.s. has had worse shape the us as a whole is the largest debtor nation in history and we have
8:27 pm
a lot of independent illinois california new york the name of you which you're very straight just like what you don't know so i hope all of us in the west have serious problems serious problems and three gridlock in washington and one interesting solution that the former budget director peter orszag came out with was saying that hey maybe america needs less democracy maybe more of these decisions need to be made by commissions as opposed to the political institution that has been mired in gridlock does he have a point. i don't know why you think that government by committee is going to be any any better than government by congress committees never work i mean if you if you're going to take. what you need is a man on a white horse who will come in and say ok enough of this mess and start over i'm not advocating that i'm not advocating that at all i'm just guessing that it happened throughout history when things get really bad but i don't see that the
8:28 pm
committee appointed a committee large predator a committee of six politicians now when i say that i think politicians are not going to be any better than five hundred thirty five politicians. but when it comes to economic decisions might be better if america had a little less democracy i know that's not popular to say but a lot of people said that during the financial crisis that china did better because they could just make more decisions without this political process. you always have the danger rather than like the road though haven't that kind of made the right may not make the right decision in the past thirty years. but suppose you have guys making the wrong. disaster then it's north korea then it's you but i don't want to live in cuba i don't want to live in north korea whether the decision has been that you can work you need an enlightened someone in what within the right mind who can see the problem just do it or to read don't have many of those people
8:29 pm
in washington d.c. anymore so you're saying that you would not trust anybody in the u.s. to make the right decisions. i don't trust many politicians anywhere alarmed by what they might have any say and yet a pox on all of their house very most politicians are more worried about the next election and anything else later and their studies show that the good politicians at least in the us were people who were very good at but when they went through well that's who you know have running things they're good at playgrounds but they're not going to figure out how to solve real problems yet they're not real good at agreeing on anything either at the gym and i agreed on a couple things and hopefully that i'm not a sucker for covering the china story but i don't hate you ding on the show it's always a pleasure that was author investor jen rogers i'm not an idiot for now for more on the stories we cover get our t. dot com slash usa should argue two pages you tube dot com slash r t america you can follow me on twitter at lauren lyster you can also get our web site to see long.
