freed italian courts bad law where not the case of michael morton a texas man imprisoned for twenty five years in the beating death of his wife after new d.n.a. evidence linked another man to the crime d.n.a. evidence for this particular were used to turn over or if we are obsessed with court cases let alone more on the case of a fourteen year old boy wrongly executed in south carolina yes it was more than sixty years ago but this is the youngest person ever executed in this country at least in the last one hundred years but only looking a little deeper into the failures of our own justice system as far as chris christie you know i lost count weeks ago how many times he said he wasn't going to run. we're going to run you know what's going to happen you're still saying categorically not running twelve about running a large percent number i don't want to run i don't feel like i'm ready to run in your heart you don't want more than anything else. i want that was ok so this is
7:04 pm
a fraction of the times chris christie told people on television newspapers magazines you name it that he wasn't going to run and it's not like he actually did leave the door open to changing his mind but i guess if enough people with mouthpieces still want you to run and they tell you enough times that there still is a chance it becomes a news story my only question is how long i want to wait until the media speculation begins yet again that maybe possibly chris christie will change his mind and the i phone admittedly i am in the market for a new phone so personally this is a story i was interested in but there's it has to be one of the biggest stories of the day and check this out we got our hands on a confidential internal e-mail circulated around the web programming office of the washington city paper is selling everyone that the apple phone i phone media event is today and in order to get as many page views out as possible make sure you use
7:05 pm
the word i phone in the title of every story you write about even if it's not relevant they will be counting your post at the end of the day really i phone in every story. all right now and the real news welcome to wall street was for the third week massive protests are taking place started by people who say they want those responsible for the economic collapse to be held accountable to the work. they have been accused of not having a unified message the same kind of the messages look old maybe because they're drawn from all walks of life brought together by anger and frustration at the direction of their country instead because of all the users rated on a policy that i've been trying to change for years. which is. destroying the lower class people. every day and this is. the image
7:06 pm
rain or shine it's the personal stories of protesters that have kept them out on the streets really the demonstrations and the deeper the occupation it was. the sixty seven year old leonard she caught came all the way from california leaving behind and ninety seven year old mother the retired home financing specialist worries about the future generation i have enough money to survive my lifetime so i don't have a problem but. my great grandkids. are great entered it to make. sure it's too hard for me to make it these protesters have largely been presented by the media as hippy anarchist teens is marching eighty nine year old retired teacher would beg to differ well she went oh my god what they do to the american people to us to stand completely
7:07 pm
corrupt completely responsible would mess the recession that we had the real art student is here with his three year old daughter whom or i want to bring my daughter because i would like for her to get an idea of what it is to be politically active she says protesters issues with this to sydney differ but if you're fed up this is where you need to be their issues all come down to one thing and you know when the wealth concentration the fantasy. it's very difficult to get any new laws passed with any kind of issue that is in the interest of ninety nine percent of people going around saying. that's just above that. pennsylvania couple dawn and mathias add some rules pedals to their outdoor beds to steep cozy topped off by an american flag i left my job i left my home i left my family i left my job . because i think this is a very very important cause this is a true revolution that's going on and i need to be a part of it i have
7:08 pm
a lot to offer it's not just passion but knowledge that's led them to the protest the cockles friend and spends her time researching the global and american financial system she drove twenty hours to get to the wall street from iowa this is the most home and that the so much corruption there. was recording a famous film we're mad as hell and i'm going to think it was after found out about the protests and she reaction at that moment it done to me that mass media is not covering it two weeks later the media has paid some attention but as the demonstrators are presented as young slackers what's one thing that hippies like most that frogs those who are ready food real change are growing more diverse by the day is the secret archie. there are so many things to say about what's happening down wall street so many different kinds of people down there for different reasons but with
7:09 pm
a foundation that seems to be more and more firm so media coverage of the protesters often makes them out to be dirty hippies with no focus or even worse this is from this couple hours ago. these wall street protesters are all that rock stars a lot of you two party guys were all but just rocks in your head start. well i mean that's true neal and it just indicates the continuing bias of the mainstream or the left wing media primarily in brooklyn we had eight hundred fifty tea parties around the country didn't cover us and when they did begin to cover us we were radicals astroturf terrorists racist these folks actually break the law and they become rock stars so these folks that break the law curious to hear how some of the protesters feel about this so let's go to someone with occupy wall street herself and was front and center over the weekend on the brooklyn bridge protester katie falkenberg. hey there katie i guess i want to get your reaction first talks news
7:10 pm
have a get how to guest on just a few hours ago calling you and all the other people down there you know he said they brought tents where you're not supposed to camp they're not law abiding citizens what do you think about that. i think it's kind of a joke i mean these people are giving up their their livelihoods to exercise their rights and you know the whole thing about the square being publicly privately owned public space it's such a mess that you know you you can't even begin to tell anyone to get off the property. but people are exercising their rights i think is the most important thing going on right given your story katie we always like to hear. you know everyone is a little different from what i understand you have a job and you've been coming down you know after work on the weekend what's your story and what are you seeing out there. well you are you're right i have
7:11 pm
a job right now i'm feeling so designer and so every day after work i go down and out with people in the closet and i've been working with some people down there and then you know attending the general assemblies and getting involved that way and then going home going to bed very hard and doing it all over again and i've been to some of the marches i've been arrested twice now. and i was on the bridge this weekend and it's funny people say oh what was worse was you know getting pepper sprayed and arrested unlawfully the other week and worse than standing out in the rain and getting shuttled out to east new york to discuss also what was worse you know and it's like well they're both great. you know because it just shows that we have so much power if we talk to another guest a couple hours ago who was also arrested at the brooklyn bridge and said you know
7:12 pm
there wasn't a feeling of despair after the arrest there was a feeling of cohesion more strength more coming together is this what you witnessed also. absolutely absolutely you know it took a long time to arrest all seven hundred of us or however many there were so we round up standing in the rain under. umbrellas and singing together and using the people's make the call and response tactic to talk to each other and once we got two or so people were singing together and laughing and when we got out we were greeted by people who were clapping and cheering and hugging us and giving us some legal information and i've heard that from all of my friends that were arrested that went to different precincts that day so it's actually pretty exciting. you know. it's not it's not. good i guess
7:13 pm
i know they want to and i mean are they doing one of the major criticisms or from the protesters down our wall street and from these protests across the country is the relationship between you know wall street the corporations and also politicians you know washington and wall street the the relationship of the world to to close now i want to play something for you that shows that a politician this is senator bernie sanders who is actually very much in support of what you and others have been doing and get your reaction it will screech greed and recklessness caused this recession but looked to so many people losing their jobs it had an excessive risk taking and wall street had a lot to do with it and so did some failures of the part of regulators. so this is senator bernie sanders sanders questioning chairman of the federal reserve ben bernanke they go into a little more and you know he asks ben bernanke we have these issues been fixed bernanke he says for the most part yes and center says you know sorry i
7:14 pm
respectfully disagree but what is your beef you know that you have with what's gone on over the past few years with wall street well i think you know obviously. the. the lack of legislation and. over over you know the banks and vald and private i'm doing and involved in. public lending whatever you know there's been a lot of. lack of regulation and also in conjunction with. is the corporate personhood that we've been fighting against sense the beginning of time it seems like in this country well especially last year supreme court case citizens united right right last year right right last year which allows corporations to fund any political campaign to as much as they want.
7:15 pm
so it's really becoming a major problem and it's not going to get fixed and joe about supreme court legislation gets repealed hey i heard they were seeing yesterday i was at the take back the american dream conference and robert rice was speaking and he said you know all believe a corporation is a person when texas and georgia start executing corporations are really kind of an interesting statement just last question for you a lot of big things happened for it some are scheduled to happen for tomorrow what are you hearing in terms of how this movement will take shape and evolve in the coming days. i'm not exactly sure how it's going to take form that the unions are kind of joining up with what's going on because the unions have by far and away many more people than we do but they are a huge portion of our country and i know tomorrow there's going to be
7:16 pm
a large march down i think it's from city hall to wall street and it's four thirty you think scheduled and i personally am going to be taking off work early to be a part of it. i don't know all see what happens but there are a huge part of our country and so they have to be included in the equation we'll see what happens all right thank you so much for your insight and kind of giving us that account from the front lines occupy wall street protester thank you for having bird but i want to talk more about the ways in which the occupy wall street movement is picking up steam you know it may have started in new york on wall street but it is migrating across the country even to the other side of the country and here's a look at the cities in the u.s. that have joined forces with the movement basically every state in red on this map has had at least some sort of occupy wall street protest and you know they're hoping to spread this these messages to the wealthiest and the most elite people in this country and you may not have known this but it's also gaining ground
7:17 pm
internationally take a look at all the different protests in support of your income growth with the occupy wall street protests taking place from asia to australia canada to europe and mexico but we do want to show you some more going on inside this country and so we sent our teams were among the lindo out to take a look at some of these non wall street and see wall street demonstrations. we don't want that knowledge is creating more pain we're suffering more and i think people are taking in. more than a thousand people in los angeles and chose to stand in solidarity with the occupy wall street movement. at city hall the very visible center of government in power and i think demonstrators worried that the one percent who control most of the nation's wealth have gained a stranglehold over the u.s. government alexander hamilton you know referred to the people he was so afraid of
7:18 pm
as the great peace in the great peace as a way people of all walks of life have turned out for this mass ministry seen here in los angeles now a lot of the protesters here say they've gotten their inspiration from the demonstrators in new york and in athens and others are inspired by the revolution of egypt now there's still much debate about whether this is part of a revolutionary movement here in america but one thing that people can agree on is that some drastic changes need to be made as to how this country runs from the east coast to the west coast and a growing number of places in between a collective anger is unifying people. in the windy city has been demonstrating outside the federal reserve bank in chicago for more than a week in boston but tent city in the heart of the financial district means occupiers can voice their discontent with corporate greed forty seven.
7:19 pm
just by dozens of arrests demonstrators intent to show that democracy does not end at the ballot box families have also been marching in denver and san francisco demanding radical change from a law to olympia to omaha to orlando according to the occupy together web site. protests are being organized. and really. the message. is wrong already. poverty foreclosures the middle class are
7:20 pm
told to tighten their belts many americans. now are going on the ground. bringing you pictures from the front lines of this movement around the strongest pictures came over this video of more than seven hundred people getting arrested on the brooklyn bridge. and the. radio up before he headed over there he spent a few minutes with us here talking about the protest the problems and so much more and he told me what he hopes to inspire. what i'm going to try to do is to make
7:21 pm
these young people and the older people with them aware that it really is historic they are expressing something that's been building in the united states for thirty years if not longer a country that was once relatively equal and its distribution of wealth and income has become much more on the court and with it has gone on a destruction of our environment the corruption of our politics and what you're seeing now is a culmination of a build up of a long time that's why it's here that's why it's staying and i want them to feel the full force of the legitimacy of what they're doing and the desire to change this country because in the minds of a clear majority of this country's people i think it's an important point you bring up and i do want to take us a little broader and i'm going to take a straight from something that you wrote about your top your giving today but you know so many people take such pride in questioning challenging and criticizing
7:22 pm
things like health care education and transportation and yet we have failed it to similarly question challenge or criticize our economic system otherwise known as capitalism and i don't lie you think this object has been so our limits. well you know we take a justifiable pride in questioning our institutions as a way to make them better we should have been doing that for the last fifty years with our economic system this is not its first failure this is not its first crisis but because of the cold war it became impossible to question the economic system you either had to be a cheerleader or a celebrator of this system or you were considered somehow traitorous or disloyal and all that happened was that capitalism got a free pass it could degenerate the way it has into the kind of corruption and the kind of inequality and injustice we're now seeing being protested so i think what these young people are doing and what the older polls with them are saying is it's
7:23 pm
time to get back and do what reasonable people ought to do question their economic system capitalism see if it needs to be changed see if we can do better and then move in that direction and no longer allow the voices of repression and conservatism to prevent us from making this a society that's better equipped to meet our needs that is now the case the you just average or that you blame i in cart when the cloud war for atmospheric changing dynamic i know that whenever crack capitalism is criticized the cries of socialism often follow the word socialist still in from many ways a bad word you know and i wondering if you have an idea how does message war share that with in terms of talking about capitalism in a way that really weighs parter. well i think that what you have is a kind of knee jerk reaction it is not working very well the more i go around the
7:24 pm
country the more i see that the cry of socialism kind of falls on deaf ears for the older people they've heard it so often they know that it's just rhetoric for the younger people they are led to ask the question if socialism is the big scary alternative to capitalism and if capitalism is not the liberal in the goods then maybe i ought to learn a little bit more about this socialism and maybe i want to ask some questions so the irony is that conservatives screaming socialism are actually feeding a growing interest in what socialism is and then leading to the discovery that there are as many varieties of socialism as ever there were of capitalism and dismissing all of them is a sign of ignorance and not a sign of an intellectual activity and openness to trying to make the world better i mean i think that might be true richard in terms of the vast majority of level headed people saying you know maybe i do need to re understand it socialism versus capitalism versus canniness and who knows but however it still when you turn on
7:25 pm
a lot of the mainstream media they have their talking point they have their short found and still socialism is seen as a bad word. yes but again i am really quite confident that that is fading in the united states the more and more the system we actually have is clearly not working for the majority of people the more they will associate all of the arguments like to keep it none the less to not question it those are going to be more and more spin and more and more questions that's already happening that's why this rally got going that's why it's growing that's why it endures despite the media retook relationship to it the police relationship to it this is the build up of a generation of people who realize that they should look for alternatives to
7:26 pm
capitalism socialism is one of those that's worthy of their attention i don't think a lot of badmouthing is going to change the impact of the real world on people's consciousness and you know let's get back to those protesters richard i know one of the major themes of occupy wall street is this inequality gap continuing to grow these big banks and wall street bankers sitting on top of growing profits and everyone else sort of you know watching their savings accounts dwindle down to nothing what do you think are some of the strategies being proposed to deal with this down in lower manhattan we told you before some of the people who who worry that they're just being seen as hippies in the streets but what are some of the real ideas here that are taking shape. it's a very rich to one of the marvels of a genuine social movement as opposed to one manufactured in an advertising office is that a genuine genuine social movement is messy complicated brings in very diverse people who all have ideas but let me assure you that the ideas coming out of wall
7:27 pm
street are very good as an economist a professional i can assure you of that they want to change for example the tax system so that people at the top do not get away with paying fuel or low taxes something that has been in the new and they have some very concrete proposals to go back to what the tax rates were in the one nine hundred fifty s. and sixty's which turns out to be much more equal than they are today that's a very concrete proposal some of them have worked it out in considerable detail they have proposals also to change how that business is of america are run and if you want a society that works equally then the businesses have to be run not by a handful of people at the top pick shareholders boards of directors but in a democratic way by all the people who work there and by the people in the communities that interdependent these companies they have proposals for a democratization of the workplace something that i talk to them about
7:28 pm
a great deal and there's a lot of interest in that so there are both alder and moore original proposals i think you'll see them worked out in the weeks to come to a very good program but not one hatched in the brains of this or that expert one that comes out of a diverse social movement in the early phases of it's worth it's an amazing and important social historical event to watch and to be part of and just last question for you return a you have to run we talk about some of these people who have real power certainly in the power is in the people on the street but there are also people higher are people making decisions that are handed by and i think about chairman of the federal reserve ben bernanke he was recently questioned about these occupy wall street protests and here's what he tell you that i take unemployment growth and inflation into account not protests just a quick reaction from the internet and act on it. in my entire life and you can tell from my hair i've been around
7:29 pm
a while in my entire life the people in power always begin in reacting to social movements by insisting that they don't matter that they have no influence that's not correct but it is a good effort to dissuade and to discourage the people that are gathering there the people at the top are paying very close attention i can assure you from personal experience the leading bankers the leading corporate executives are very worried that this is the beginning of a mass movement that will change american politics and influence the bottom line of their companies when you hear them say things like that that's purely a p.r. effort to discourage such a movement i don't think it's a succeeded the first three weeks i don't think it will succeed in the future that's all it is an important point has never been seems to be getting larger and that's not our richard roth economist and host of economic update on time u.b.a. i ninety nine point five f.m. radio thanks so much.
