3:01 pm
coming to you live from central moscow you're watching r t and we begin in athens where angry protesters have been clashing with police who have fired tear gas at them thousands have been gathering outside the greek parliament a furious with the level of spending cuts the twenty four hour public sector strike brought the country to a halt greek airports were closed and hospitals are relying on emergency staff r.t. sarah for reports now from athens. we saw the stings on the streets of athens day on syntagma square outside the main parliament building we asked lady again as the tensions pulled david with the angry protesters and the riot police clashing we saw at a gas being fired we also saw some people needing medical attention the riot police moving on to the syntagma square and trying to clear the protesters out of that area and really some very aggressive scenes of the clashes between the two sides that we saw the police moving into the metro station chasing some of the protesters
3:02 pm
here on syntagma at the match a work is striking actually intervening to push back the riot place certainly a very very tense situation we see more and more these are starting measures being passed not really raise the level of public anger head the beginning of the day the main labor party is in the country had led thousands of work is public sector workers on to the streets to protest against these measures and again like we said we saw these things the escalating quite dramatically throughout the day people are really losing trust in the eurozone leaders ability to take the country out of this crisis and to put measures in place that are actually realistic and can be met now what we've seen over the last couple of weeks is the government passing more and more these are starting measures to try and keep the international lenders on side to try and prove to them that they're able to take these steps to try and plug the deficit and that budget the property tax that we saw passed last week and the
3:03 pm
announcement of possible job losses on top of people who already in the country having had the salaries cut dramatically most people at about thirty percent of the salaries who are being cut then to have these extra taxes it is really raised the level of anger amongst the public here he said they simply can't manage that now we've seen this all say quite disconcertingly spreading throughout the year is and from the sovereign debt crisis is moving now into the banking sector. well and there are fears of a repeat of what we saw a couple of years back and you know once again we're hearing what people are saying is the steps in the measures that were put in place at that time after we saw the collapse of lehman brothers you know it really was a key for that because we find ourselves back in the same situation certainly here in greece we've already seen is slowly being downgraded by midis and the state of committee said that that happened as a result of a lack of trust in the year are you saying governments really does sentiment could not be echoed any more clearly by the public here is what is exactly how they feel
3:04 pm
they just lost trust in the u.s. any disability to get them out of this situation and face now really that we're going to see this meeting for the financial crisis into a very severe economic recession possibly not just because remember that the rest of the year is a countries as well well euro zone leaders have given themselves until mid november to decide on the next tranche of the greek bailout it will only arrive if the country meets its deficit targets thomas tyga some from s.e.b. worship banking believes that athens is being prepared for a default. there is no real point in keeping on with this bailout exercise and i think over the past one or two months that's become clear to the euro system and the i.m.f. as well so i think that the delay that we heard about earlier is a very significant event it's a chair said there won't be any more bailout payments to greece by that we need another four or five weeks before the difference the preparations for for a week week to fall can be in place obviously if it happens in uncontrolled way it
3:05 pm
could be a very destructive event if there are no defensive perpetrations made in the in advance then it could cost the banks other governments quite dearly but i think that that is what would be the reason why this is going to happen right now but in four or five weeks he said they're now frantic preparations underway to bolster the defenses to make money available for bailing out banks and ring fencing the healthier governments of europe when this actually happens so when we live problem i could see within the bailout solution is that every single interest i've made over the past year or two they all seem to believe that after the bailout there would be a default anyway so that's just throwing your money down a black hole better not do that and start dealing with reality instead. well russia and china have vetoed a u.n. security council resolution on the syria the european backdraft called in damascus to end its crackdown on protesters or face targeted measures but moscow and beijing
3:06 pm
said they're concerned it could pave the way to in libya style military intervention r.t. submitting to point i reports from new york. russian ambassador to the united nations vitaly churkin said the draft was too one sided he described the resolution as a confrontational approach taken by the european delegation and against the peaceful settlement to the crisis now this draft resolution was proposed by france with the support of portugal the u.k. and germany but the one part of the text that many countries seem to disagree with was that that called for syria to comply with the resolution within thirty days and if it if not complied then the council would quote consider its options including unspecified quote measures many council members including china russia brazil south africa interpreted these vague terms as leaving the door open
3:07 pm
to sanctions now of course russia's one is one of many countries that has been opposed to international sanctions against syria ambassador churkin says moscow believes the violence should be stopped through internal reforms and political dialogue not external sanctions or military intervention such as the case of libya you put in you see what you broke the draft resolution which was not passed it was based on an entirely different philosophy the philosophy of confrontation we cannot agree with its one sided accusations against damascus we believe the threat of implementing sanctions against the syrian government is unacceptable this approach contradicts the principle of a peaceful settlement of the crisis based on a common syrian national dialogue. brazil india south africa and
3:08 pm
lebannon abstained from voting on the resolution but it was the united states that voiced. stream disappointment that the security council did not adopt the resolution moving forward russia and china said that they will be working on a resolution to gather that they say will be more balanced in the case of syria we do know that some council members wanted not only the syrian government condemn for the violence but also a condemnation against all the anti-government protesters that may have been inflaming the violence that has been breaking out over the course of six months but that is a measure that the europeans did not want included in this resolution. well the veto by russia and china follows three months of heated debate in new york and the disagreement has split the security council but moscow is convinced its action is
3:09 pm
justified r.t.c. could that he explains. it's a rare rare case that russia has used its power of veto since nine hundred eighty four it's been seven times only that russia turned to its last resort if you will and in case of syria russia felt it was necessary to be told that resolution to stop that scenario and yet another arab state similar to what happened in libya op sure the u.n. mandate to protect civilians the resolution on libya was passed in march with russia abstaining from the vote but that monday it was quickly picked up by nato which sided with and to gadhafi forces helping them to topple the tunnel and russia believes that in case of v.b. at the un mandate was misused and this is why it has vowed not to let that happen again just as china russia as well the told me the only two permanent members of the un security council who are actively trying to negotiate a peaceful solution to the crisis russia in particular has hosted representatives
3:10 pm
so board president bashar al assad the numbers of the opposition trying to notch them into the dialogue and russia things that when you have to armed sides in a conflict what you need to do is to bring them both under the same tent while the whole issue of this resolution on the syria came up an estimated over two thousand five hundred protesters have been killed in violent crackdowns on anti assad the forces since march this year at vishal damascus claims that it's only fighting some but tours who've been killing their security offices and hundreds r.t.d. has obtained a video footage which allegedly shows that those at and t. outside protesters are actually carrying weapons and using those weapons fire and we cannot see a very quiet these small bulk phone footage these are indeed tend to hear president assad protest as they do not look like the death rate is only calling the president
3:11 pm
to step down. so it was she's saying that it is a conflict where it's all because that violence has been carried out on both sides so if you only support one harm side in that conflict you are here to sending it biased message to one side in these cases to opposition forces a message of strong support which will only fuel more tension inside the country. well president of the future freedom foundation jacob juan berger says that the motive behind washington's one sided approach to syria is getting rid of the regime they once used to deal with this notion that the u.n. has is now part of this pro-democracy receipt regime is ridiculous they are jumping on that bandwagon is an opportunity to get in front of it and create this deceptive appearance while at the same time there's a porting the dictatorships that are aligned with them and the united nations and it's part of their empire and we look at libya you know they go in there the old
3:12 pm
colonial powers you know are coming back to their house the on days of the empire france great britain and now the united states affecting a regime change and there is no price there's no upper limit on the number of people they're willing to kill to affect their regime change there's another important factor to consider here too and that's the hypocrisy that the u.s. government aligned itself it partnered itself with the assad dictatorship you'll recall that that's where the cia rendition to make her a were are the canadian citizen that they rendition to syria for purposes of torture now where was the u.s. government in trying to help the syrian people suffering tyranny when they were partnering with that dictator to torture this guy and we've seen this time and time again they used egypt the dictatorship there to torture people so there's a lot of hypocrisy here their quest is to put their people in charge in these in
3:13 pm
these regimes in order to expand their demand and control. well still ahead for you this hour out of touch with the prime minister david cameron tells his party to have can do optimism we hear from atalissa who say he has nothing to be happy about . plus we toured the a chechen capital grozny as it celebrates the city did had its miraculous rise from the ruins of just a decade ago. the first in the us the occupy wall street movement is gaining support on a daily basis we were unions have joined the chorus of disapproval and from l.a. to d.c. thousands of set with the state of the economy and the government's inability to turn things around or protesting for a third week and going into reports they're determined to be heard. we don't want that not just creating more pain we're not very more grabs and i think people are taking it. more than
3:14 pm
a thousand people in los angeles. chose to stand in solidarity with the occupy wall street movement. at city hall the very visible center of government in power and i think demonstrators worry that the one percent who controlled most of the nation's wealth have gained a stranglehold over the u.s. government alexander hamilton you know referred to the people he was so afraid of as the great peace in the great peace as a way people of all walks of life had turned out for this mass demonstration here in los angeles now a lot of the protesters here say they've gotten their inspiration from the demonstrators in new york and in athens and others are inspired by the revolution of egypt now there's still much debate about whether this is part of that revenue scenario movement here in america but one thing that people can agree on is that some drastic changes need to be made as to how this country runs from the east
3:15 pm
coast to the west coast and a growing number of places in between a collective anger is unifying people. in the windy city a group has been demonstrating outside the federal reserve bank in chicago for more than a week in boston a tent city in the heart of the financial district means occupiers can voice their discontent with corporate greed twenty four seven and a half. despite dozens of arrests demonstrators intent to show that democracy does not end at the ballot box families have also been marching in denver and san francisco demanding radical change from the law who to olympia to all my hot to orlando according to the occupy together web site protests are being organize. in more than one hundred cities points that people are standing behind are worth a revolution i believe their time is up i think that i think the world is
3:16 pm
recognizing that that doesn't work despite mainstream media down plain and even ridiculing the movement supporters at face the message will be understood and you saw what happened in london they tried to make that out about a bunch of people that were just you know really you know the bad apples that's humanity. thinks about them something is wrong already bruised by soaring unemployment poverty and foreclosures the middle class are now being told to tighten their belts leaving many americans to finally find their voices across in the beginning bigger it looks like the spreading throughout the country you know they had a arab spring and you know hopefully we have with us in los angeles. call never runs drive interesting videos news and blogs and here's what we've got for you online right now a blitz operation by russian special services keeps the country's air defenses. and
3:17 pm
uncovers the chinese spy to keep the secrets and. became of interviews iconic american talk show host larry king finds himself on the receiving end of the questions as he gives an exclusive interview with our take but you can watch it now on the on line dot com. the british prime minister has called for a can do optimism during quote an actual time for the country's economy well speaking to his conservative party david cameron said the threat to the world economy is a serious today as it was in two thousand and eight when global recession loomed well gavin hayes who is general secretary of left wing pressure group contest told me earlier the priorities of the speech were all wrong. i don't think britain is in a position to be optimistic and we are very very disappointed with the prime minister's speech today i think people all across britain would be quickly coming to realize that this is an out of touch prime minister and that we have a seen
3:18 pm
a thing do nothing government firstly on the economy because we're very worried about the economy and the prime minister's lack of a plan b. for the economy you know the government was warned a year ago that they really did run the risk of a double dip recession if they cut public spending as hard and as far as they have to in order to pay off the deficit in his speech today he failed to allude to any plan b. for the u.k. economy secondly he also talked about the need for people to pay off their credit card debts here on this also seems entirely out of touch with the british people as nearly inns of people struggle to make ends meet every month struggling to pay fuel bills put food on the table and clothes their kids but we heard absolutely nothing
3:19 pm
again in david cameron's speech about the need to reform the banking system and sort of cracked down on britain's big banks so i would have liked to have seen much more of a focus on making sure those at the top pay their fair share. well let's look at some other world news in brief this hour after an intelligence officials have arrested a six individuals charged with conspiring to assassinate president hamid karzai the group which is reportedly affiliated with al qaida managed to recruit one of cars lies personal bodyguards for their operation so extremists have killed several high profile figures in afghanistan in recent months the last of which is the is up to her twentieth assassination of former afghan president who had a deed rabani. yemeni activists say at least eight people have been killed and over one hundred fifty injured in the past twenty four hours in the southern

city of government forces shelled residential areas while opposition led armed tribesmen supported the demand for president sell it to go join the fire fight thousands continue to take to the streets across the country protesting his decades long regime. any of that started in february and has reportedly claimed the lives of over fifteen hundred people. the nobel prize in chemistry has gone to an israeli researcher for his discovery of crystals the complex complex structural form was previously thought to be impossible because the atoms were arranged in a manner contrary to the laws of nature seventy year old daniel shechtman will receive around one and a half million dollars award at a ceremony in december. now it's a big bash for the chechen capital tonight with a mass of celebrations marking city day but there's more than one day of shows from presidents to grozny the city has gone through a massive transformation since being devastated by two conflicts against extremists

in the one nine hundred ninety s. but artie's it was even a question about what to happen. just ten years has passed and grozny has gone from this this to us president at arms uncandid of is known for will be on his hometown viewed as an authoritarian ruler in the west but the fact of manager to many fellow chechens and handsome bushes his vision to raise devastated grozny from the ashes and make it the do boy of the caucasus. i never thought it would be possible in such a short amount of time what's happened in some kind of miracle i can believe my eyes . the proudest achievement is grozny city a complex of international class hotels and business centers when they were first per poster there was a lot of skepticism they would average build many thought it was just a pipe dream but there there are five believing towers there at the heart of the

reconstruction of course the and our is so obvious that is recovery following the destruction wrought at the beginning of the millennium but cut it off once to do more than just put our buildings he's aiming to raise the city's profile on a global scale so is the still much of the year he's attempted to grab the world's attention by inviting stars from the world of sports and show business to spend time in grozny. we've opened a stadium a youth center palace and a few cinemas so people go see other places on t.v. you think it's better there than here in the country we want people to come to us. it's not the first time grozny has been rocked by big scale events in may legendary footballers diego maradona and luis figo took part in the grand opening of the city's before that other international stars including roberto carlos came to the

region some turned years ago it would have been hard to believe that anything so glamorous. high profile could alfre take place on the chechen soil but now it's almost become a tradition chechnya has seen massive progress but there are still challenges terrorism remains a big problem here with attacks taking place on a regular basis but locals put their hope in investment the belief if change tracks more money from outside and the quality of life continues to improve eradicating terrorism will no longer assume the mission impossible my gentle push no r t reporting from crossing. over just a few minutes we'll explore the long term fallout from the eurozone debt crisis but first let's take a look at what's happening in the world of business with dmitri. thanks to the russian markets closed in the red adding to three sessions of heavy losses

that's despite stronger crude prices and the significant bounce back in europe russia has taken a big hit during the latest market turmoil as investors pull their cash out of risky locations but analysts say if a double dip recession is avoided emerging markets will outperform other globally to seize emerging markets in general are much stronger fiscally they have much stronger growth that is expected in europe in the u.s. and corporations in emerging markets such as russia and elsewhere are also a much stronger so you know i think that once for now investors are simply wrapped up on the concern that we could get a catastrophe if we can avoid because i asked for three weeks now it looks more likely that i think once we settle down we will see more money coming back to emerging markets faster than developed markets the latest markets with many verses scratching their heads over where to put their money just demand steve or marilyn suggest infrastructure projects still offer the prospect of
3:25 pm
a substitute. when you look at a lot of infrastructure projects the attraction of them is they may be emerging markets but ultimately they are the gateway to global trade whether it's passenger traffic all freight traffic and i think a lot of investors see that as a charity i'm involved use of these projects so when we've privatized whole companies they tend to be gateways to to global trade and therefore best to say i'm investing in domestic infrastructure but i'm also investing in the globalization and the opening of that market to new investors new companies overseas so it's an interesting way to play an emerging market but also to the risk it for investing in a company providing infrastructure to support both import and export trade. so you look at the markets for oil is still strongly in the black first thing and for after a fall the u.s. gasoline stockpiles dropped to five million barrels last week brant is up two dollars seventy six cents light sweet is at seventy nine and a half dollars per barrel. u.s.
3:26 pm
stocks are strong after an index so non-manufacturing activity in september came in better than predicted also automatic updates or process reported u.s. companies added ninety one thousand jobs in september which was better than expected and heads of a crucial a jobs report due out on friday. this is the closing picture for wednesday session in a europe oh very strong session there as e.u. and i.m.f. officials express support for ailing banks financials were among the main advances among them grows a seven and a half percent to be in people eight and a half percent. but quite a different picture here in moscow where the r.t.s. last point six percent to my six point two percent despite these positive external factors if we look at the main movers on the my starts to see lower energy shares were mixed despite the rebound in new oil price gazprom down point nine percent gross naphtha up one point two percent and also as burbank could not catch up with
3:27 pm
the rally in financial. around the globe here's another example from town. to russia market with not as good as the european markets of the all without any particular reason for this fundamentally obviously very solemnly greece and few other countries actually more cheap than the russia and russia is a real to liquid market to emerging markets but is still really where depend of the neulander everything but in any way in many rented toward it's a risky emerging market are certain people just want to play we even have the asset is we at are active and cheap. well that's it from this edition of the business news on r t you can join our my colleague at eight am moscow time tomorrow morning if you can of course headlines and exciting.
