5:00 pm
they're gaining strength and numbers and this is occupy wall street teams up with some major unions turning the movement into a labor of love so can main street pave the road for some real change as they fight against corruption. are not mad at the keyboard. i'm not mad at them for being so world are mad at us for having been so wrong the past two years that corrupt order but it's time to break the silence from protests in wisconsin's occupy wall street average americans are being quiet and no more so as progressive groups and leaders
5:01 pm
try to take back the american dream will another new party emerge in the u.s. . and it's not just wall street that's fallen victim to big business and plants and in fact all aspects of life on the food you eat and medicine you take so is there a cure. we talk to health ranger mike adams and diagnose of the ills of corporate greed and. it's wednesday october fifth five pm in washington d.c. i'm liz wahl and you're watching our t.v. . i from new york to boston chicago to l.a. occupy wall street protests continue to grow in numbers across the nation and today the grassroots movement is expected to grow exponentially with key unions joining the rally and the big apple some of those joining and of the united federation of
5:02 pm
teachers workers united and transport workers union local one hundred these organizations have already endorsed occupy wall street but their presence and physical support today is making the voice of the protest louder and stronger and while the mainstream mainstream media has mocked the protesters for being scatterbrained the hippies they may now be forced to take note as some of the biggest player isn't organized labor join the cause now some say that there's outrage over the system is similar to uprisings we saw in the middle east so like the arab spring could we see an american fall and joining us to talk about this further into the studio here is labor journalist mike alec. i might thanks for joining us now. today could be a milestone for the occupy wall street protests as unions join the forests how do you think their participation will affect the movement well it's certainly helped
5:03 pm
grow the movement having the number of bodies in the streets give it a certain voice more of a structure but also provide for a lot of dialogue between the movement that's out in the streets and what's going on with organized labor organized labor right now isn't a crisis we represent six point nine percent of workers in the private sector so it's going to create a lot of linkages it's going to swell the numbers it's going intense apart it's going to make occupy wall street more over. driven from from labor leadership in some ways and this could also be a problem i mean you have to worry about whether or not leaving the leadership is going to co-opt the message of the people in the streets and whether this is going to be actual arms because this does not always happen when it was labor and this is an area what is your prediction i don't know i think it's a thing we have to wait and see certainly i was surprised when rich trump who came out and endorsed occupy wall street i was surprised when jamie mcintyre the head of asked me which is the large public employees union in the country and jewish occupy wall street because typically leader leaders don't do things that you can't control . but i think if we can see it kind of thing now what do you think that these
5:04 pm
protests can become parents of the protests that we saw that swept across the middle east can you draw any comparison between the two i mean certainly i think there's a number of comparisons between the two and the protests in the middle east you had people protesting for a number of reasons what happened in those protesters and they were driven largely by social media and by organizers involved for years which is what has happened here so they're driven largely by social media and institutional actors like i like and unions and other groups start joining him. so we're seeing that but you're not seeing what really broke the camel's back in this situation which was unions going on strike and right now you know these protests are certainly a payment changing public image but they're not creating much leverage should shift in the public dialogue the not creating leverage that really puts corporations in a crisis really have to sort of how do they create that leverage when i think what's happened you seems like the new bottom line which is working with national people's action if you a number of other unions are starting to move people back into foreclosed homes
5:05 pm
where you know you're seeing union you see workers for instance came up with keys to workers that were walked outside of these auction house so that's really create the leverage we use the power of the people in the streets of very specific instances or not just as much that i mean there's been a lot of criticism because rock by water doesn't have to dance but i mean with the demand you simply to be treated like a human and it's a rallying call to training school for a lot of people so as to see what kind of other actions come from this but it's certainly a rallying cry inspiring people to move forward now do you think this could be something we saw. revolutions sweep across the middle east could this be this movement here. on wall street occupy wall street could this be the beginning of some real change it could be the beginning of real change or could also just be a false start. the key is i think in a lot of ways is is this just going to be
5:06 pm
a public statement or you know really start taking on corporate power in specific ways but you know i want to play in the mainstream media has been denigrating and downplaying this movement and i want to play a clip for you which kind of example eyes us there's no political movement there is no thirst for any kind of a political movement there they wouldn't have the backing of the american public. now what do you think about that statement is that do you think that's true there's no thirst for change and they would have the backing of the american people what do you think i think this is me in the bag and american people i talk to workers over this country i go to kentucky i go to minnesota i go to all kind of places and work and really want to see change in this country simply because real wages have been declining so i certainly think they do have a bag in american people and i don't think you've ever seen the party any other groups like that occupy whole squares for weeks at a time occupied wisconsin state capital so what we're showing here is that people in the streets can really change things and this is the beginning of i think
5:07 pm
a much larger movement it's a question of whether or not we can turn this loud steam made into leverage you know president obama has been an outspoken critic of corporate corporate greed and some of the corruption on wall street do you think that president obama will come out in back of this movement. why is that isn't what he does i mean you know where was president obama during the rise and strike where was president obama doing half a dozen maybe the speech where was you know obama doing wisconsin but he was you know he was campaigning for hope and change isn't this some people demanding i'm change sure but i mean this guy's terms in office i mean i mean this is ministration such a joke the have sealed jeff immelt the c.e.o. of g.e. the head of the jobs ship he's in factories overseas and so bombs come and so they haven't been much change in the way. you know and we also we heard some reaction from the presidential candidate mitt romney called these protests dangerous class warfare with your reaction to these movements getting these kinds of labels. well
5:08 pm
i mean it is class warfare. perhaps it is dangerous i hope corporate c.e.o. see this is dangerous it's not clear certainly we haven't seen anything this esteemed against wall street since the thirty's we've had people camped out for weeks and the question is how much does a rogue room in the thirty's we have the bonus armies we have hoovervilles some of kind of encampments so does this go on for months at a time and if so how is that going to change the public narrative and how is how are they going to reach out to other groups to create change in specific actions and that's the real mission right you know and ultimately ultimately do you think politicians will listen to the mic to the demands of these protesters are i mean if not who are they listening to. you know it's not i think it was you know the people who give the money so i mean i think with this kind of congress i think we have two tracks right now people focus heavily in politics but i think we can be crucially cooperation from cooperation judge so much of how our lives are you know kind of
5:09 pm
benefits that as we get excited like thank you so much for joining us about was labor journalist like alan now the last time we saw massive protests a new party emerge there the tea party so a couple occupy wall street protest the beginning of the progressives getting a tea party of their own leaders of the progressive movement are hoping so leaders like van jones a former obama administration official who just launched a group called rebuild the dream and is hoping to tap into the energy taking shape across the country are the correspondent christine friends alexander to take back the american dream conference and spoke to van jones to learn more about how. you could say this is where it all started. the fight for labor rights in wisconsin today it continues. as a nationwide protest against the power of the wall street and is evolving into what
5:10 pm
some are now calling a revolution. on the streets and off the street. and fuel to this grassroots fire hundreds of progressive groups and leaders are latching on including van jones in a campaign to take back the american dream at a conference of the same name we went from hoping to moping if we got to the middle this movement is now being built according to lawmakers and labor leaders alike i think america knows who's responsible and they're upset by it and they're upset that these folks are still living as if they had destroyed millions of lives and i think that's going to spread across the country. i think in spreading because those with all the wealth are hurting it and people that need jobs aren't getting them it's time they say to fight the echo chamber of corporate and right wing interests if you stated over and over and over again on fox news on radical yellow radio rush
5:11 pm
limbaugh if you stated over and over again on the editorial pages of the wall street journal stated over and over again people start believing it because they say to themselves a life i keep hearing that we are on call when or where the tea party managed to tap into that. capturing the airwaves and pushing policy the worst people in america with the worst ideas have gotten into discussion and i'm not mad at them i'm not mad at the tea party. i'm not mad at them for being so loud i'm mad at us for having been so quiet those here say they will be quiet no more especially when it comes to communicating a stronger more unified message we're big in the tea party because our values are more stuff about more americans and do you want to have good jobs for your family do you want to have good health care do you want to have strong strong healthy communities you want to have educations mccaskill's or not probably others argue
5:12 pm
for different reasons this is nothing like the tea party here's tea party cofounder mark meckler these people are not like the partiers they're not law abiding citizens they're campaigning hard work helping isn't allowed they're breaking the laws on the brooklyn bridge that's not tea party behavior that's not america loving behavior here they say it's about how to reclaim the american dream make rich people pay their fair share and corporations pay their fair share it is he's had stolen the american dream so many people were here to take it back i see that democracy in a form rarely seen in this country so they've got to get bad enough to get better and i think people with maybe some false hope that without work if you are oh paul we just saw the problem or so we could all be happy about reality the reality is if you don't buy what you want you deserve what you get progressive leader than protesters are like plays much of the wind here i pay street where they say lobbyist work hard funneling corporate money into the hands of lawmakers
5:13 pm
maintaining a system that benefits are breaking down the wealthy and not the majority of american people a system based a change in washington christine for the our our team. and for more on this earlier i spoke to our own christine friends and i asked her to expand a little on her report and ask if this new take back the dream movement that's an at all with the occupy wall street movement that's currently spreading nationwide here's heart sank. there's a lot of things going on here and a lot of people that i spoke to this to back the american dream conference look at the occupy wall street they look at wisconsin and they say you know this is our american autumn they look they compare it to what's happened in egypt in tunisia in terms of rising up against their government but they do also to an extent like to compare themselves to the tea party saying finally an answer because basically since the election of president obama in two thousand and eight there hasn't been
5:14 pm
sort of the last mass liberal movement progressive movement and the loudest voices according to them in many ways they say have been from the tea party so they're comparing themselves to the tea party but not necessarily very different ideology of their organization and yet you know and those who saw him in the package one of the things that he said is you know he before he he and a lot of others didn't want to make that comparison but he said it's time to actually take some lessons from them and here's one thing that they did good the tea party people that identify themselves with the tea party talk about rugged individuals on however they work collectively they know what their messages they have two or three talking points and they stick to them the problem he says with the progressive movement is that you have so many different groups of people you know from people in the labor movement people fighting for labor people fighting for racial justice women's rights l.g.b. to you right the environment you have all these different groups of people and they talk about working together and once for the benefit of the ninety nine percent of
5:15 pm
america however that's not what you see you see somebody with this sign somebody with the signs so there's not a unified message he says that needs to change we need to all be on the same page fighting for the same thing now do you get a sense that it's possible for the progressives the pool their voices and research resources and eventually launch launch their own party and that's what that's what it's about i mean it is hard and that has been one of the challenges is that you have people with so many different desires the. identify themselves you know either as progressives or liberals or on the left and they want their cause to be given the most attention so i think that's where the biggest challenge is i think that it's been made aware that that has been an obstacle to getting things done you've heard for the last couple of years you know the economic crisis is hurting people receive this income and what inequality gap continue to grow let's fight for them by the way let's save the environment by the way l.g.b.
5:16 pm
she writes you know gay marriage so not that they should put those issues that they care about aside but that they should sort of work together especially in the next year or so to try to find common ground to stick to a message that resonates with people that's not long or complicated you know that they can speak in soundbites and get it across and this movement kind of resonates with you know when president obama when he was campaigning he was on his rhetoric with hope and change and of course van jones he used to work for president obama is are is there any sign that the way president obama is or is reacting to death or is there any communication between the two of them you know their president obama hasn't spoken so much about it we did hear from vice president biden who was a little bit confused about who van jones even was van jones the green energy czar for the white house for about six months resigned in a scandal that has to do with going back and all this other stuff but i think that . everything that i heard van jones they is something that i'm pretty sure the
5:17 pm
white house would be on board with a week on the surface i think they're still waiting to see sort of how the occupy wall street protests take shape before they sort of comment or react so i haven't seen much although there's a chance that he have and the part of the party that we're comparing this to that they're comparing it to is the tea party and the idea what this party would be called if it were to emerge that's a good question i don't know that that's probably a good idea the bay if they're going to come up with a unified message they should come up with a unified name or voice and that was our correspondent christine for example now active occupy wall street is venting their anger at the corporate elite that they say is steering our economy into a depression they say corporations have infiltrated our politics resulting in a nation that is not so democratic anymore beyond the economy what other ways can
5:18 pm
corporations be running the lives of the masses some say their power is so vast that they dictate not only the economy but the types of medicines we take even the food that we eat like adams also known as the health ranger talks to us about the surprising ways corporations and villains every day lives of average people. the corporate influence on the u.s.d.a. has been so enormous that us the has granted approval for what are essentially experimental foods across known as genetically modified organisms or genetically engineered crops they've never been proven safe and some evidence links them to for example organ destruction in animals and yet the american people are being treated as guinea pigs by consuming these g m o's unknowingly because they aren't required to be labeled but both the u.s.d.a. and the f.d.a. go along with it so we see corporate influence throughout the u.s. government and especially throughout the regulators who are approving products that
5:19 pm
really have a dubious safety record and how is the corporate agenda in fact being the health of the general public. well it's the the big medical industry of course is based on earning profits from sickness and disease so there's really no financial incentive for the pharmaceutical industry or even the vaccine industry for that matter to really show people how to prevent disease to take responsibility for their how to stay healthy to make good food choices and so on there's just not an incentive there and it doesn't have to be a conspiracy to keep you from sick it just has to be realizing that the for profit medical industry which works very closely with government has no financial incentive whatsoever to keep people healthy so you're saying that there is a financial incentive to keep people sick there is indeed yes not a cancer industry generates billions of dollars a year off of people who have cancer i'm not saying that they're trying to keep
5:20 pm
people sick or cancer but they sure aren't looking very hard for the cures that really exist out there nor the nutrients that we know help prevent cancer such as vitamin d. which is only pennies a day and at least one study shows that it can help prevent four out of five types of all cancers that's just one nutrient that could really revolutionize health care in america and yet that cancer industry is not talking about it you know h isn't really talking about it the president isn't talking about it we need to be talking about how do we prevent sickness and disease and keep our population out of the hospitals and off the drugs instead of becoming lifetime patients and lifetime paying customers who are going bankrupt because they stay sick. well this sounds kind of scary and why why aren't we talking about and why is the best interests not for public health. well i mean it's the same reason we're not talking about let's
5:21 pm
say an honest money supply rally or the bankers in charge of the economy why is the federal reserve printing shiite currency and not turning over control of the money supply to the people it's really all about consolidating power into the hands of the few who work in conjunction with government often through a corruption kind of avenue rather than allowing the power to go back to the people and this is why we're seeing occupy wall street this is why people are taking to the streets because they're fed up with being dictated to having their wealth and their health stolen away people want their power back and they have every right to demand it so i support all the public protests that we're seeing today in america and that was the next question i was going to ask you we're seeing the occupy wall street protests gaining momentum do you see this as a hope for some real change in the system a system that you say is designed to benefit from to benefit the corporations yet
5:22 pm
clearly the system that we have today the status quo is not to benefit the few at the cost of the many and i do have hope because for a long time i wondered would people get off their couches and get out into the streets and make their voices heard and demand their power back and demand control over their money supply and control over their own health destiny and we're starting to see some early signs of success today occupy wall street whether or not people agree with the particular message is being said there i agree with the principle of people getting out and making their voices voices heard practicing their first amendment rights and letting let their voices be heard on wall street in washington and all around the country and i mean what a sorry i'm going to jump in there but i want to play a sound bite for you from ron paul where he is referring to this uprising. if it was involved with probably about fifteen trillion dollars worth the
5:23 pm
transactions and a third of it was there to serve foreign banks and when the american people hear this no wonder they're up on wall street raising cain because they know that the system is biased against the average person so mike what do you think is the system biased against the average person absolutely and ron paul is exactly on point with that approach as he has been consistently year after year the global banking cartels you might call them really do operate for their own selfish benefit expense of the american people and one of the things that ron paul has called for which we have supported at natural news is to audit the fed let's have some transparency in what's happening with the money supply that's also why we happen to support ron paul as a presidential candidate he's the one person out there who wants to tell the truth and have some real transparency so that the american people can see what's
5:24 pm
happening to their future mike thank you so much for joining us that was mike adams he helped arrange are. still ahead here on our tissue from wall street to athens for a big factory provide is on their way that's our protesters are battling for tear gas and austerity measures to get their message heard we'll bring you some of the sights and sounds of a country falling into ruins next. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions it's going to be a prick through get through it if it made who can you trust no one. issue in view with the global machinery see where we had a state controlled capitalism schools sessions when nobody dares to ask we do our t. question more.

you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so. you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else hears you some other part of it and realize that everything is ok. i'm charging the big picture. clashes between protesters and police forces have asked the lady in front of the parliament building thousands of people have flooded the streets of athens during a twenty four hour public sector strike shutting down schools and courts and causing all what caused all flights to be ground said r.t. correspondent sarah ferguson in athens and she set the scene for us. we saw the
5:27 pm
scenes on the streets. the square outside the main parliament building with the escalating tensions boiled able with the angry protesters and the riot police clashing we saw a gas being fired we also saw some people needing medical attention the riot police moving on season cagny square and trying to clear the protesters out of that area and really sent very aggressive scenes of the clashes between the two sides that we saw the police moving into the metro station chasing some of the protesters here. at the match a workers on strike actually intervene to push back the riot place. a very very tense situation we see more of these asperity measures being passed not really raise the level of public anger head at the beginning of the day the main labor parties in the country had led thousands of workers public sector workers on to the streets to protest against these measures and again like we said we saw those
5:28 pm
things that escalating quite dramatically throughout the day people are really losing trust in the eurozone leaders the village the to take the country out of this crisis into measures in place that are actually realistic and can be met now what we've seen over the last couple of weeks is the greek government passing more and more these are starting measures to try and keep the international lenders on side to try and prove to them that they're able to take these steps to try and plug the deficit in their budget the property tax that we saw passed last week and the announcement of possible job losses on top of people already in the country having had the salaries cut dramatically most people at about thirty percent of the salaries who are being cut then to have these extra taxes it is really raised the level of anger amongst the public here he said they simply can't manage that now we've seen this rules a white disconcertingly spreading throughout the usa and from the sovereign debt crisis meeting now into the banking sector. well and there are fears of
5:29 pm
a repeat of what we saw a couple of years back and you know once again we're hearing what people are saying is the stats and the measures that were put in place at that time after we saw the collapse of lehman brothers you know it really was a key for not because we find ourselves back in the same situation certainly here in greece we've already seen italy being downgraded by midis and the state of from moody's said that that happened as a result of their lack of trust in the usa in governments really does tension and could not be echoed any more clearly by the public here is what is exactly how they feel they just lost trust in the eurozone leaders ability to get them out of the situation and is now really that we can see this meeting from a financial crisis into a very severe economic recession possibly not just because the rest of the year is a countries as well now as our correspondents are further with the latest on the turmoil and grace well that does it for now for more on the stories we covered go to r.t. die.
