8:02 pm
let's go to our new york studio where we're joined by eric group head of the independent newspaper thank you for being on the show because you have been covering this and you think this is going to be big why do you think this has the nucleus as you put it they revolt. probably accomplished already. maybe about a. week. and then down there everything. around the world profited by everything i read in this jeffrey sachs. naomi klein. michael moore on and on and on. the only. magic. back of. this. not.
8:03 pm
a public protest or to. this. great event maybe. we can see the baby maybe as. many of the. first they started reading. some of the orders to get ready. for a week later. that's because. we're. in the very real. hour. there isn't one.
8:04 pm
population. hour. an hour and i hear what you're saying but on the other side of that you know you mention that the mainstream media has had to cover this now and that you feel like they're being more sympathetic but for every one of those reports i bet i could. so you have one that is dismissive or that barely touches upon what these protesters are calling for or that downplayed really what is going on there and certainly a far cry from what you described as far as how momentous this feels do you think that that is going to hurt the impact of this movement well sure of course. with. social change that. there are many people who are. great. or they are.
8:05 pm
our without. but. financial. writers are all. along or maybe. we're starting to see. that. there would be. lasted for a. little. i don't want to. brag or write of course and along those lines you mentioned that president obama has acknowledged why protesters are out there we thought federal reserve chairman ben bernanke say he can't blame them for protesting over the joblessness and
8:06 pm
economic problems in this country but there's protests and then there's protests turning into power and and channeling that to create change so what do you think these protests can really accomplish ultimately. well i think. that publicly they by doing their own. they will scale back we are very. mindful of the medicare and medicaid and other social programs that they send you know there is so much anger out there i get organized especially with what you have. across the. road the fact. that. they will try to buy off the public.
8:07 pm
and the. power that looks like another political party that means the largest most. we. are very. very or. because i. think there could be a risk of all of this momentum getting getting used to not ever amounting to anything that would be impossible at this point. that is with. the right. at least of the u.s. official last. monday
8:08 pm
. world country. anymore we. were told. that if it needs it i think it will have a purpose and just quickly i'm almost out of time i need a quick answer but if you had to compare because in your story you mentioned the strikes of the one nine hundred thirty s. in the u.s. you mentioned counter lunch counter sit ins in the one nine hundred sixty s. you also mentioned. the arab spring if you had to compare this to one thing we've seen in history so far what would it be. because that.
8:09 pm
more powerful. all right there you have it capitalism the core problem that you say people are out in the streets up in arms over thank you for being on the show that was airing head of independent newspaper. now as i mentioned mainstream media outlets many if they're not ignoring that they may be trying to dismiss it or trying to brush off the occupy wall street movement as an archivist and unfocussed well our own end of thought you were going to went through the camps today to see if there's any truth to that which you found. these are entering these are the people you know. accused of being an outcast and disorganized the occupy wall street encampment is far from chaotic and sit out like a small village folk and up into the in sections way better organized than i
8:10 pm
thought it would be. they really have it set up so that there isn't a clear leader in the organization and the way that it's done but at the same guy. every part seems to be handled by someone a medical area staffed by volunteers provides on the spot assistance comfort area supply sweaters and boy gets to keep demonstrators warm as the season gets chilly or while the don't need it sleeping bags pileup as the number of protesters goes bigger redistricted chinatown bus or beer from richmond virginia. the kitchen providing a traditional american breakfast bread bagels and peanut butter and jelly plant foods are used to filter water here we have breakfast at seven thirty in the morning people don't know what fish food grade cereal we have lunch around but we have snacks continue to continually throughout the day as your dinner at seven thirty a media center has been broadcasting a live stream from day one of the protests for already three weeks videos film

searches we got c.d.'s d.v.d.'s a guy drug documentaries hoping for wall street prides itself in being a peaceful grassroots democratic movement without leaders there are just different decisions made by different groups if there's a if there is to be some decision that's going to supposedly speak on bart on behalf of everyone here but now we need to have been an evening general assembly and need to be consensus on by everyone here all of the many cooks in the kitchen i'm here to cook up one thing the revolution of change in american history teacher can a fourteen or so they have it and for the latest on what's happening on wall street our intrepid producer lizzie cavanagh is in the midst of the action in new york and she is a tweeting machine so you have to follow her because not only will you be enlightened but you will know all of the latest hottest news from occupy wall street can see some of her latest tweets right there she's tweeting as we speak her twitter is at
8:13 pm
lucy caf and of and you can get up to the minute action by simply following her on twitter. now from unrest in new york to unrest abroad this week marks the ten year anniversary of the war in afghanistan and it seems the combat mission could continue indefinitely certainly there is no clear end in sight and as a result protesters here in washington have launched a protest against the war their message is similar to the occupy wall street demonstrations actually that we're seeing spread across the nation and our own correspondent liz wahl took us to freedom plaza where the protest part that this week and she also takes a look at the true cost of war that these protesters are angry about. afghanistan ten years later. more shooting more bloodshed and not an end in sight the guy still there are in afghanistan fighting army out of the u.s.
8:14 pm
the coalition forces were ten years old when this war started the expense of the war in afghanistan is staggering it cost the lives of nearly seventeen hundred u.s. soldiers an estimated thirty four thousand afghan troops and civilians dead and nearly half a trillion dollars poured into war and today anti-war activists say enough is enough it's being. carried out on the backs of the poor and the working class. thousands gather at freedom plaza in washington d.c. demanding an end to the wars we want the war to stop now and one way is to stop the funding of the war in iraq and afghanistan we hope that the people will really put the pressure on our leaders to do. the protest sparked this week mark both the ten year anniversary of the war in afghanistan and the first week of the new federal budget a budget which funnels an enormous amount of cash into wars in the military budget
8:15 pm
is fifty five percent of federal discretionary spending if you had the intelligence budget in the national security budget at sixty six percent these protesters say the wars in the middle east are being fought out the expense of the middle class and pushing people into poverty that the budget is austerity for everything except for the military and so that's why you see home was advocates unemployed out activist poverty activist kind of activists in the. protesters here say they no longer have a voice in washington and this is their only chance of being heard it is only through civil disobedience and mass protest that we have any are going to say will succeed but we have any hope. returning the country to what the constitution calls the consent of the dog. until elected leaders listen and act demonstrators say they'll be camped out here until they see some change from
8:16 pm
washington list mall. are realistic to this let's break down the list of u.s. achievements in afghanistan same box of high a country for over a decade yet we've got that spent half a trillion dollars on occupation and that's a conservative estimate check we got that achieve quote fragile and reversible gains check we've got that too so as the afghanistan war reaches its tenth anniversary are we any closer to an end as a country for more earlier i spoke with colonel anthony shaffer senior fellow for the center for advanced defense studies he's also author of this book operation dark heart i asked him what after one thousand nine hundred american lives lost and half a trillion dollars spent enough being conservative what has this war just gotten the us taxpayer exactly here's what he had to say. frankly nothing. you reference my book my book actually covers a tipping point two thousand and three we actually achieved our major military
8:17 pm
objectives by two thousand and three what you've seen since then is just essential you are dealing with a culture we don't fully understand and if i may be so bold to say following the same failed path the soviets followed in their occupation there's a great series of articles called the bear went over the mountain apparently the pentagon leadership didn't bother to read which really showed how it was silly to actually try to secure the urban areas to basically modernize the culture and some hope that they would become a twenty first century society they've not done that frankly nor should we have set out to do that it's not our job and i know this sounds really harsh not our job to to make. the lives of the afghan people better our job was to ensure the terrorist attacks cannot be mounted from there and that's what we did in zero three frankly i think since that has been a waste and yet at the same time the united states is still there and not only the us there that i mentioned in my opening the u.s. is expanding and building up one hundred million dollars present and i'm bob. why
8:18 pm
are they continuing in astrachan perhaps why the real answer is that you have a momentum of bureaucracy which just doesn't like to admit it's wrong you have leader after leader make their their name in this even general petraeus has left and i think quietly so because they have not achieved any any of their own stated objectives the pentagon to say it said several times that they stop the momentum of the tali one well that's just not true it's false and frankly it would never never be possible until we actually deal with the root of instability which is pakistan so ever it's like the weather everybody talks about it nobody can do nothing about it the issue is how we decide we're going to get serious this is really pakistan the afghan government knows that we know that i don't know and finally admitted within the last two weeks that the i ok pakistani intelligence service has been helping the taliban frankly my book was censored. why the pentagon last year at this time because they did want to. talk about a new trail so basically you have
8:19 pm
a pin to go in which is committed to a field course and they are not only building down other tripling down on things that they know they cannot win but that now people are talking about pakistan and you've heard that they're kind of running on the on the drums of war over that a kani network which was blamed for the attack on the on the embassy and afghanistan and you have heard more talk about concerns over pakistan with the united states supposed to be moving out of afghanistan but are you just calling for more war and just moving that to pile of no no not at all it's time we believe if it were up to me i heard president obama i would declare victory that we actually back in zero three and zero four and let it go with this is the deal you can to seek regional solutions one of the things i talk about my book introductory is this was we need to see a northern ireland style peace process for all parties come to the table you know people with interest actually sit down and work with this this is not an american issue this is truly a pakistani afghan india iran issue there you have it on the tenth anniversary of
8:20 pm
the u.s. war in afghanistan that's what the book operation dark heart has to say about things he's also senior fellow at the center for advanced defense studies and ten a colonel anthony shaffer now still head right now r t don't go away because with spending on wars and protests on the streets as you've seen not to mention global economic growth slowing is it time for a global oddity of the economy. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to break through it through people who can you trust no one. is you know you do with the global machinery see where are we heading state controlled capitalism is called nationals when nobody dares to ask we do our tea question more. you know sometimes you see the story of the six so you think you understand it and then

8:22 pm
homeowners to see how they too are connecting with the occupy wall street movement and finally all new next week the mainstream media is quick reaction often kasit in terms of fact checking so as human rights groups continue to sound the alarm over multiple arrests and killings in syria well take a look at one high profile victim who has made an amazing reappearance all right with the protesters on. wall street and across the country and trillions of dollars spent on wars the u.s. possibly headed towards another recession not to mention the eurozone in crisis and global growth slowing down how about an audit for the global economy r t has a special report on that. ground floor model or god perceived as the critical function structure of the
