live from our headquarters in central moscow you're watching r t with me and he said now it's four pm here in the russian capital we begin in cairo where religious tensions in egypt intensified following the fall of mubarak have now grown into full scale riots over twenty people were killed and hundreds injured as clashes erupted between coptic christians and security forces but what began as a peaceful rally calling for justice over attacks on christian churches by muslim extremists quickly turned into the most violent episode since february revolution military vehicles were seen charging through crowds as you can see here and plowing into people army infantry fired rubber bullets and tear gas it's still unclear who sparked the fatal scenes but state owned media has placed blame with the christian protesters as you discuss these events unfolding in egypt i'm now joined by carl shara he's author of a blog on the middle east affairs called coral remarks mr charles thanks for being
8:02 am
with us authorities seem to be putting the blame for what happened entirely on christian protestors do you agree with these versions of the events. absolutely not and what's really shocking is we have a state media in a country of a mixed christian and muslim population calling the protesters the quotes and saying the cops have been doing this and doing that this is a very cynical attempt by the defacto rulers of the country the military to portray a. minority of the population and the religious minority as troublemakers when in fact all they're doing are trying to seek some justice and overturn institutionalized discrimination that's the. residue from them time of what barak and his policies so this is absolutely cynical. of the way it's covered by the military council and its media are and i think it doesn't bode very well for the
8:03 am
near future in egypt where there are only religious tensions behind these protests or is there some kind of broader issue at work here. let let's look at what the background that we're looking at here in egypt because some people got carried away after mubarak stepped down and declared their evolution over in fact what we are facing is a popular uprising that was a poor aborted by a military coup leaving a pretty much a political and security vacuum in place and that's the context for what's happening in egypt and all the kind of sides involved from the emerging secular parties to the more established parties to the military to the civil administration ministration don't seem to have enough authority to control the emerging situation in egypt so that void within that vacuum anything is possible at the moment because these simmering tensions that had been fueled activity by the mubarak regime for
8:04 am
decades are there and unfortunate that israel discrimination because the courts can build their churches and sometimes their churches are being attacked so that situation can be exploited now let's not look at what happened yesterday just so as not to portray it as a purely religious divide or that it just divide is that demonstrations started with many most in the square in the taking part and there is the sense in egypt now there is a secular. secular group that was the driving force and in the uprising that could potentially take leadership of this to ation play feel like that and this is defiance and find unity and sense of purpose among the egyptians but mubarak is sort of well known for his talents if you might at keeping things under control in terms of religious tension that doesn't seem to be the case with the supreme council of the armed forces or skaf how do you assess that situation and how radicalism could perhaps become worse in the country won't be able to stay secular
8:05 am
. yeah i mean obviously that's always a potential in a stew ation when you don't have political clarity but let's just distinguish that mubarak was sort of comfortable in his position over thirty years in power and he had orchestrated the sense where they the government made in collusion with some of their leadership all of that called to kind of transform the corpse into a minority that language shouldn't have existed in the in the first place they are egyptians and they are part of the egyptian social fabric now if you have to look at it from the point of view of the military it's basically cynically i think playing the security security card and saying if we don't have total control of the security this is what's going to happen and also it's fueling the flames of tension because we heard reports yesterday and we saw footage that there were calls for. if you like to to attack counter attack the christians and then there were cries that
8:06 am
are associated with salafist extreme islamist elements marching to the aid of the army so was a very cynical attempt by the military council to kind of fuel about sort of tension and then probably what's going to come out of it is delaying the elections or stalling the process of transition to civilian rule but let's not deceive ourselves this is not kind of a story that's going to a development that's going to unfold by itself there is no easy transition to civilian democracy it needs a force within egyptian society to drive it forward and foremost to challenge the remains of the old regime that are still trying to block the transition. right karl shara middle east expert and blogger author of the blog call remarks talking to us live from london thanks for your time thing. largely documents the timeline of how egypt's revolutionary joy turned to disillusionment and suspicion that's in our
8:07 am
website for you at our team dot com you'll find first hand reports on what became the main stumbling block to egypt and democracy and why people keep returning to talk real square to demand change. and clashes continue in syria where opposition supporters are following in the footsteps of egyptian revolutionaries and later in the program we'll look at how russia sees a way out of the conflict. for the first time in nearly two decades a polish prime minister looks set to clinch a second term in office with more than ninety percent of the votes counted donald platform party has a strong lead in sunday's parliamentary election cited over four years of economic growth and relations with russia party's correspondent in eastern europe. is following the count. from what we've seen so far there will be no surprise this as to who is going to win the election in poland the exit poll results which were
8:08 am
published straight up to the polling stations were closed on sunday night suggested that prime minister party the civic platform will garner around forty percent of the votes with their main compact it is the party of the twin brother of the of the late polish president lech kaczynski it also will garner around thirty percent with all the votes counted so far these results seem to be proving rather accurate this will not be the great victory for don't know if you will still have to form a coalition with other parties in order for his party to have the second spell its power in a row but few experts have any doubts that the prime minister would be able to form a coalition with several other parties and take a second spell at power in poland this in fact is could be proved to be a very historic move because since nine hundred eighty nine polls have been changing their government and the ruling party every single poll has with every election this it'll be the first time since one thousand nine the same party has
8:09 am
been reelected and the same prime minister will stay power for another four years this is not a surprise to many experts as they have been many surveys in many polls suggesting that poles have been very happy with their government with the way poland handled the global recession and this is probably one of the main factors why the polls have been voting for the prime minister even despite the voter turnout has been rather low for. really politically active polls and the era of power for the last four years have signified much improving relations between poland and russia in particular after the tragic smolensk crash which killed most of the country's political elite along with the country's president we are expecting that should he be confirmed as the country's prime minister for the second spell that we expect that he would not change his. foreign policy and the relations with russia will stay on the same level. but for more on the outcome of the polish vote let's now
8:10 am
talk to peter kaczynski from the center for european policy studies for the first time in a generation poland has reelected the ruling party and effectively the prime minister why do you think they have retained the support of the people this time well actually this is the first time ever that a government has been reappointed we've never had that in history ever the only times when governments were reelected there were there was there were other actions with free elections so this is the performance of the main reasons why this happened was a very strong performance by this government but also a weakness of their position. could you could you give us a little more detail to our audience who might not know what the weaknesses of the opposition per se are is how to secure reelection. the there are there were two parties in a position to prime minister in the last four years the injustice headed by years
8:11 am
we've got to be has a glass ceiling that they are. to get over thirty five or thirty three percent and they've lost now six elections and they're zero two prime minister they have a long tradition of knowledge being able to win the last time they won was back in two thousand and five so long six years ago concerning the other parties the left wing party is the bride's day they've had a disastrous result. of its leaders are not going to make it to the bottom and they scored only about eight percent after the very very poor electoral campaign and now there is a new party a new kid on their blog elected first time to the parliament liberal or liberal or type you would see what comes out of it definitely on take off to church party called the public good movement. i was there to interrupt obviously paul certainly
8:12 am
have a wide array of parties to choose from how has been successful given the financial turmoil in europe with his pro european course well he's been very successful not only poland has been the only country back into the nine north to have a contraction of its economy it's been constantly growing for over twenty years now down employment has been the other controlled inflation has been other control the country has been very heavily investing in infrastructure and other areas of public life but surely there are people in poland are afraid that the e.u. financial goals may reflect their economy as well especially during this second term in the future. well it remains to be seen those issues where parts of the debate there are financial perspective for negotiations coming in the e.u. and this government has been advocating that it's the best prepared government to
8:13 am
actually secure another wave of pavement payments for poland up to twenty twenty but it's not only about having those funds because you see it grows the region probably is not the only country to benefit and not everybody has been the benefiting from this these funds so you need to be very well prepared to actually make use of it and government for a large extent has been considered by the electorate pretty well prepared to run the business they're also considered as being able to warm relations and have quite a bit of success in doing that over his last term to people support that direction suggests a decrease in anti russian sentiment in poland just briefly for us. very briefly the people seem to support programmatic relations with all the partners and all the neighbors and anybody who is advocating for a more radical approach towards russia and so on that the way indians were
8:14 am
ukrainians or for that matter is rather not welcomed by the by the public at large so there you go prime minister normalization with you with neighbors or very close partnership with germany and that the largest opposition party. offered a different different solution there was clearly not welcomed by the other kocinski from the center for european policy studies thanks for your analysis thank you for having. or watching closely the situation in warsaw as well as the fallout from the boat our eastern europe correspondent alexia says he is tweeting all the polls what the polls these talks are that they're happy with at the helm of their country paul adding that he himself feels russian polish ties are getting warmer follow developments in poland on our twitter feed at our g underscore column. russia could soon come to the rescue of debt ridden e.u.

economies that will be hand was extended by a presidential aide however the details of the plan will be discussed only after europe comes up with a clear crisis strategy archies time barton reports well this news comes from the presidential economic aide who said there have been meetings recently focusing primarily on spain in those meetings to raise the possibility of russia being able to buy some of spain's debt and so provide extra help for the debt crisis he also said that of the brics countries brazil russia india china and south africa could try and help economically with the use economic woes but there is a big but it relies on the e.u. coming up with a clear plan to try and contain the debt crisis that is currently sweeping across the eurozone we all know about the problems in greece italy and spain as credit ratings have recently been downgraded again raising fears of major debt problems
8:16 am
there so russia says it's true it's too early at the moment to talk about any concrete plans to start buying up spanish debt we want to see unanimous first. still ahead here on r t. thanks for saying chances are very high to me yet over there in the cave in metro shelter or at least discover some traces of these so let's go there we set out on a quest to find the legendary yeti in the mysterious mountain this far in siberia. but first russia says its veto of the latest u.n. resolution against syria was not designed to indulge president also the regime the statement comes as a delegation from the syrian opposition visits moscow to discuss solutions to the country's ongoing violets. is following the talks. members of the syrian opposition are in moscow they've met with russia's two african nations me off and
8:17 am
the main message being told to them at the moment is that even though moscow did block the u.n. draft resolution on syria it does not support president assad's regime pretty much it's important to understand that russia's veto is not designed to give a free hand or carte blanche to president assad's regime if the syrian government has missed the message it's high time to understand it they should go ahead with genuine not formal reforms and to gauge and dialogue with all sides of the conflict not only those who are comfortable partners moscow has been furiously criticizing the violence in syria throughout the entire conflict and according to the u.n. it's already taken the lives of nearly three thousand people just earlier we've heard from president need be said that syria is in desperate need of democratic reform and even that if the current of cody's will not be able to put these reforms through they would have to go but peacefully i'm not a result of any foreign military forces getting involved similar to how the events
8:18 am
unfolded in are still unfolding in libya so russia blocked to the western back to you on resolution which did not exclude the chances are for military intervention currently russia and china are proposing their own resolution which condemns both sides for the violence last week of thirty syrian moscow met with representatives of the syrian authorities but they are still here they say they are not ready to hold any negotiations with the oppositions just yet. have our web site r.t. dot com for more on our top stories also online right now at the american auto inspired by the arab spring campaign are striving to curb corporations abuse of power refuse to leave their camp but the wave of discontent spreading across the country. and ground to air the new york city mayor gives his bullies. force a new weapon to fire at suspicious aircraft as part of fresh anti terror measures
