the images the world is seeing from the streets of canada. operations are today. today they're cleaning up their community tomorrow they're going to try to clean up a wall street so as the occupy wall street movement claims more territory do they have what it takes to offer up america's messy economic situation. and he's tuning in to the cause our team bumped into former rage against the machine guitarist tom morello at the occupy wall street protests and he told us why this movement isn't going to stop anytime soon. plus the occupy wall street protests might not be your cup of tea but it doesn't striking similarities to another american political movement one that wasn't graced by many republicans with open arms so is this
8:01 pm
a case of sibling rivalry or of bitter dose of american reality. good evening it's thursday october thirteenth eight pm in washington d.c. i'm christine for you were watching our team well a major day today in the movement to occupy wall street the movement continues to grow and spread around the country and i want to just take a look at this this is i'm out of all of the cities where occupations are taking place as we speak and this weekend coming up on saturday they're expected to grow in what's being called the global day of action where protests are scheduled to take place around the world the call is for people of the world to meet on the streets to initiate global change of course one of the cities that have got has gotten quite a bit of attention in recent days is boston when boston police and transit officers came into a park tore down tents and made arrests and this just happened
8:02 pm
a few nights ago let's take a look at that video once again. protesters allege that we're being peaceful and that the head of the national lawyers guild was among those arrested as were several medical personnel on the scene also among those arrested a young woman named alive a heap earlier i spoke to allies about her experience that night. we have been occupying a single section of the road kind of the burning way up until monday night and on monday we moved to our second section we've been expanding every day we have hundreds of people coming by to join me live every day as we try to keep up and we've been working with city officials and the entire process as we had a very friendly working relationship. monday we were told by the boss and believe
8:03 pm
that if i had both camps would be removed people who did not move would be iraq. can turn to our very safe keeping control of the on the right kind of a three way told us that. we've been very respectful of their and their plan and how to actually operate to reimburse them if they get much to stay and. we were told that if we didn't buy them and i think they would be arrests made and we did up eight hundred people came to be very peaceful very careful singing chanting linking arms and chanting are and you know were arrested and how long were you in jail i was detained for fifteen hours most people were detained for a long some people were actually held for longer because they were only for the organizers of the and then what happened when you got out. we were arranged ga tuesday and shame of us were well we were offered two options we could
8:04 pm
i know take a seat on a cry and have the charges dropped was double up on sort of like a parking ticket. and how to interact or we could plead not guilty and continue to a trial for the criminal charges of on awful stuff like credit and which did you choose i don't resent you doug i'm a student i'm very high of course of course let me ask you this a lot of other you know there's a lot of stereotypes about boston police and you know how to go to college there a lot of those stereotypes don't seem to be too far off but i want to get your reaction to how the police are there i mean do you get the impression that a time they see this as sort of you know a nightclub brawl that needs to be broken up. they're a very different reactions from different operations officers were incredibly friendly incredibly supportive to a lot of people who said oh ya got me a ton of signs you know we're really with you want us and then there were
8:05 pm
a lot of officers who were very broad with protesters i was actually jane with a limit who's a member of the concert piece he was dragged my heart broke through the case even though she hadn't been warned that she would be well with the real you know fact we always saw some of those pictures a lot of those veterans for peace members arrested holding their flags let me ask you this i know a lot of questions from a lot of people still sort of trying to get their heads wrapped around this movement they say you know new york protesters are angry at wall street and washington they're angry at the way government is often swayed by wall street large corporations what is keeping people motivated in boston what are you guys fighting for we are fighting for the same thing that all of the occupy movements are fighting for right now we perceive the economic system to be on jobs and unfair to at least ninety nine percent of america in. america one percent of america controls a huge amount of our idea and with the control credit wealth comes and ottilie and
8:06 pm
surmount a lot of political influence and all of influence on the economic conditions of iraq at the minute i heard joe were calling on everyone whether you're at the very top of one percent of the bottom of the ninety nine er's are any more ambitious me to stand out and peacefully protest this and activities and children the revolution we have just was an equality in actuality not just and i was even pretty active at you know tweeting about this as well keeping people up to speed with things happening on the ground there in boston and i know that one of the things i read that you tweeted you said i really love the photos of the cops who are arresting us to protect the quote new plantings just standing around on said plans a good job tell us a little bit about sort of the aftermath what's happened since the arrest and from the other things you've been tweeting about that you want to make sure people know . i'm fortunately ought to be around as all of the private property everything that
8:07 pm
was on the greenway was destroyed including american flags and we you know where they just decide to throw away the school supplies that otherwise been donated you better given back to us but the occupy boston movement has landed firmly on its feet being amazing trying to get our general assemblies following feraud but a huge amount of support i've been contacted by people from australia canada ireland all across the world to surprise move but we're active in occupying various cities all across the globe and we're really just continuing to stand up for this movement and you know getting back on track getting forward all right will keep it up and i we do have you keep us posted i'll keep my loss and protest are alive the he's thank you and we're keeping our eyes on occupy wall street in new york of course as well now earlier today tom morello guitarist for rage against the machine performed an occupy wall street r.t.
8:08 pm
producer lucy chalfant also spoke to him asking him among other things to grade president obama's performance so far. my support for obama was very conditional begin with i never had hopes that it would be beyond the sort of centrist democratic president that he that he is now. many people some of us hope because he looked like a different president and he talked like a different president he would be a different kind of president clearly has met him but i'm not waiting around for him to change people occupy wall for not waiting around for him to change this is a movement from the bottom up it's movement has to be reckoned with and many people see the problem is federal reserve and what do you think about. i think that's i think that's. frankly small potatoes to the overall problem the fact that the. country and the planet is owned and run by people who don't deserve it they do make a profit they do in the name of privilege they they do it at the expense of human rights expensive environmental rights what you're seeing in the currently one thousand three hundred cities towns and hamlets across the world are being occupied
8:09 pm
his people across the spectrum cannot be represented by their corporate masters enough they're represented by their government sponsored and up to represented by the tea party the democratic party the republican party having their voices be heard and i think it's about time. i found not having heard me at all of my attention. and might have. all the crimes are and the crimes are the fact that people can no longer afford to keep their homes that's a crime all the bankers who torpedoed the the wall street melfi sense that originally torpedoed the economy goes unaccounted for those are huge economic crimes which caused death and destruction to the to the poor working class families united states all these people just like i lost a billion bicep are going to. see peace in the south those are the kind of cracks but you can't if you're the president's if you're the president i'd say you can't prosecute those guys because you depend on the speaker. to get in office to stay in
8:10 pm
office because of the quote interest you sir i work for united states senator for two years under alan cranston from california. and while he was a very progressive person more progressive than obama i got to see witnessed firsthand that every day he was on the phone asking rich guys for money none of that money comes for free we're not but the strength of occupy wall street of occupy america is that we're not we're not begging and pleading for help without begging and pleading for some savior to wave a magic on to if we cast our ballot avoid every four years as the moon is defining itself and figure out what it's going to do to change the world inspired by arab spring inspired by you know greece and spain and yet the u.k. inspired by the feeling that all you need to do to change the world is get out your door in the morning stand up in your place and time people are angry and they're dissatisfied and they're not service by the mainstream political parties and they're not service by you know the hate mongering the right wing populist movements and this is a place where in your hometown tomorrow your high school you can start occupy
8:11 pm
libertyville illinois it's a place where people can gather to express their grievances and express their solidarity with one of like we feel like it right and we're going to do something about it not sure exactly what that's going to be we've got a place to go to stay together i mean it doesn't make a relish for me to report on something i pepper sprayed in the media didn't report on it nationally until several people got arrested it was happening the media was reporting on it and now the guy from agents and she's performing so let me just reporting on it now to it happening whether or not they suppose things are occurring and they want to get out right here is over right in front of them and if you don't like what brings me in the press yes. if you have him. it's not my dad or god but that's the story of even though i don't know that it's necessary to overcome the media's skewed portrayal of the i mean this is seems to be more of an i follow up and it seems to be a more. accurate a well rounded representation now that was three weeks ago and have shopping at
8:12 pm
last week and i'm a freshman at organic and i think the sixty's around how. because . there's been a little bit. worried should people. be they should be surprised if it occurs but it also should be don't you. agree with that you are confederate actually firing these sensors and like. water next. week as first ignore you then they laugh at you but when i was rage against machine guitarist tom morello. and we've got several crews on the ground and you just speaking to our producer lucy calf and off from what we understand those in the thick of things on the agenda for today a full camp cleanup session protesters there asking for donations of brooms and
8:13 pm
cleaning supplies they're hoping to clean zuccotti park where so many have been camped out for about four weeks now the reason is that new york mayor michael bloomberg said that those campers will have to leave tomorrow morning at seven am so that the park can be cleaned they're concerned that if they do leave they won't be allowed back in so they say they plan to position themselves with brooms and mops and human chains surrounding the park to nonviolently stand their ground now as far as what's in store for the rest of the night and the coming days i want to talk to lucy cavanagh she spoke to me earlier from our new york studio for the answer. not only the painting up today they've been cleaning out throughout the occupation and we have to keep in mind that the way that this is organized they have sanitation committees they have people specifically dedicated to taking out the garbage making sure there's not a lot of food in and disgusting things on the floor they are very well organized in that regard now today they saw
8:14 pm
a ramp up of the cleanup we've seen people literally standing on crawling on hands and knees scrubbing the ground to try to prepare for the potential showdown tomorrow and there's no indication really that any sort of cleanup effort is going to prevent the potential showdown because it really according to most protesters isn't going to be about sanitation it seems to be about getting the protesters out now i mean or bloomberg did say that the folks could stay there indefinitely so you can't exactly go back and turn on that that promise that statement and so a lot of people here suspect that this is going to be some sort of a backhanded way to force them out to come out of the park now they're not the officials according to the the statement released by the media and the group fields management companies that they're not asking everyone to leave immediately what they're doing is they're cleaning the park in three different sections so they'll clear certain sections clean it up and let folks back but they're not going to allow about this sleeping back starts all of the material that these people have been relying on to essentially maintain their occupation which
8:15 pm
a lot of folks sort of see as a battle cry of potential warning shots one interesting development we heard today is the local teachers teachers union announced that they're going to be donating storage space for people to keep their possessions and protesters say you know what if we have to give up our items will still stay there will sleep in shifts will sleep standing will sleep seating seated we're not going anywhere and that's the that's the rallying cry from the protesters in the park today what's the reason lucy i mean this is the private part from what i understand and as you said for four weeks even though sleeping bags and targets aren't exactly allowed there for four weeks they've been allowed there with no real issue what's the reason the mayor and the police department are giving as to why you know now they won't be anymore. well keep in mind that the mayor's live in girlfriend is actually one of the people that's is on the board that oversees a zip code the park liberty plaza supposed hers are calling it so that that little conflict of interest isn't really lost on anyone here but folks really do think the
8:16 pm
mayor is nervous and if i were the mayor frankly i would be because the numbers are growing we saw rain unpleasant conditions you know not the kind of situation where you would think protesters will continue to camp out and and people are still coming there were a bigger number today's numbers today in the park during the day than we saw before and these kinds of potential showdown downs conflicts potential backhanded evacuations are only going to boost the numbers and so a lot of folks here suspect that the establishment elites are worried that they're worried that these kinds of occupations are spreading across the country that they don't seem to be showing any sign of slowing up they're expected to spread internationally in fact to europe across europe on october fifteenth and folks just don't know how to handle that you know if i were the police chief i would be nervous as well although the irony is that these are you know. with sticks in hand it's a lot of families a lot of students a lot of actually employed people who happen to want to do something to change the
8:17 pm
system that they feel is stacked up against them and one other interesting to point to bring up for tomorrow is there's a family sleep over scheduled so there's going to be a lot of kids and families expected in the park tomorrow i don't know how a massive show of police force is going to go along with that that's going to look pretty bad in terms of pictures out in the media i saw that on the agenda family sleep over i think tomorrow and saturday night but if you want to get you to talk a little more i didn't realize there were these sanitation committees i think that's really interesting it's almost like a mini kind of government without a head is being established what other kinds of committees or groups are there that are sort of helping make this show run more smoothly. it's shockingly organized as someone who was watching it from washington and had had the opportunity to spend the week past week there i mean they have medical teams they have security guards they have they have minds of different working groups for example folks that focus on food folks that focus on a raising money they have
8:18 pm
a committees established to welcome the new occupiers into the camp to sort of go over rules and try to make sure that there's no conflicts or fights within that would give the mayor or the and y p d any more additional reason to crack down and the one thing to keep in mind is that everything that's done in this occupation is very transparent every single evening they have something that they call general assembly which is basically a giant meeting where anyone can essentially speak that's when they offer their proposals on what they want to do for example as we speak right now they're meeting in zuccotti park trying to decide on the plan of action for tomorrow and anyone the police the media anyone that wants to come by and listen and figure out what our processes moreover they post everything on the website so there's really nothing shady or underground or undercover about this process at all which is all the more reason why people are so frustrated and confused and puzzled by the official police and city reaction to this occupation it's certainly been great for us we've been
8:19 pm
reporting on this from inside you know our studios here to be able to watch that global stream online and just last question for you lucy you you mentioned this global day of action on october fifteenth this is the day that cities from all around the world are calling to all sort of gather together any sort of plan of action since you're sort of in the polls the heartbeat of this whole thing. yeah i did actually at eleven in the morning and they're planning mass rally to converge against chase bank does sort of protest some actions there there's a different. versions in washington where park plans for one pm and the most interesting thing that will be keeping an eye on i five pm on saturday we're expecting a lot of people to turn out in times square to occupy times square not as a permanent occupation but sort of as a show of force a show of numbers trying to get new people interested in the movements and knowing knowing how new york city is laid out and the amount of police that's already present in times square i wouldn't be surprised if something were to go down there
8:20 pm
but of course we'll be keeping a very close eye on all of that for you all those people standing in line for their discount tickets for broadway will certainly see it in times square a lot of people there on a daily basis are to producer lucy catherine and lucy of course has been bringing us the latest pictures and interviews from occupy wall street she is also a master tweeter so many updates throughout the day about what she's seeing and hearing at occupy wall street you should definitely keep an eye on it to stay for following this movement follow her on twitter lucy catherine of. all right so we've got this group of people loud and angry making demands well of course it didn't take long before the comparisons again between the occupiers and the tea party we've been comparing and contrasting for a few days now on our t.v. and thought bill maher made some pretty interesting points the other night on the rachel maddow show. the tea party movement that's the true member stir sort of started out as protesting some of the same things members the belhaj of the banks
8:21 pm
didn't like the big banks it just shows how easily the people in the tea party can be herded to something else they were sort of on the same page as these folks but then they started to watch fox news may know what they were really upset about was things like obama care and taxing the job creators and somehow they were under the wrong side of the issue again some good points right but you know it's also important to remember that as the tea party got co-opted by fox news i did koch brothers and the various message machines it also did grow in power and strength and pretty clearly helped shape the outcome of the two thousand and ten election where republicans swept into the majority of the house of representatives and and many ways changed the direction of the national debate so the connection we think is fair and we want to go a little deeper into it so to help me do that earlier i spoke to one of the
8:22 pm
original founders of the tea party karl denninger karl is also the founder of the web site the marketing or sort of start of this interview i asked him about something posted on his website from libertarian pete blum who wrote that occupy wall street is basically all the things that were in the original tea party but ignored by the quote republican booster club well ask karl to comment on that so here's his point if you take a listen but i think there to some degree accurate one of the things that we had originally was actually back in two thousand and eight which i'm pro-choice when it was held on wall street the original protest against the bailout of bear stearns and then a second one that was held in washington d.c. that we called the toilet bowl protest because it featured a toilet bowl in which people could deposit their collateral for the federal reserve. and those were very small of us there were thirty forty fifty people where we hold out a lot of both you know. a lot of signs and in and out some banners and flyers and proper stickers and d.v.d.'s and things like this and then everybody went home and
8:23 pm
the problem with protests and the political process is that it's very easy no matter how big the protest is to for the politicians to simply wait until the people go home and then they can ignore you well occupy wall street was a little different and back in two thousand and eight i wrote that when we will actually see changes when the people calm they set up camp and they refuse to go home that appears to be happening now and there is of course you're going to expect people to try to co-opt what's going on but it is a very dangerous process because the authorities look at this and try to make up their minds what to do you have to basically all comes one is that we see some justice here and to some extent that probably doesn't involve prosecution so the statue of limitations has been intentionally run on some of these things but not all and the others in the other real change really needs to happen is we need to be examining who promised who what and what can actually be to whimper because
8:24 pm
a big part of what's being groped about here that i've seen within the occupy wall street movement are things where the only real solution is for people to go bankrupt but that has to happen impulse sides the student who takes on seventy thousand dollars in debt studying history probably wasn't all that smart to do that but somebody made him a seventy thousand dollar loan and a solution to that is for him to declare bankruptcy and have that debt be able to be discharged which are currently cannot but the person who made the loan would also needs to eat the seventy thousand dollar lost in what we have done in this country over the last three four years has forced a homeowner to actively declare bankruptcy they lose their house they get foreclosed on it or on the street and the bank doesn't have to suffer the loss of making below that was no effective at the time and that's where the injustice starts and private want to stick for a little while longer and with kind of that comparison between the tea party and occupy lot can we put the others in point of our own similarities between the two
8:25 pm
movements. that. here we have and the both of them are a joke and an aberration and a bunch of weirdos at first they both are angry at the elites they're both concerned about jobs the economy they're both repulsed by wall street bailouts disenchanted by the death of the american dream both people in both movements feel left out of the system the tea party of course angry at governments occupy wall streeters angry at corporate america we've had you on the show before and you know you've told us so many how in so many ways despite gaining power at the tea party was hijacked what's your advice for the occupiers down there right now. don't let it happen that's i mean it's a very you know it sounds quaint and its own simple but it's not one of the things that the occupy movement seems to have going for it used it has not turned around and issued a sort of formal to me it's this is a good thing not a bad thing everybody's looking for a sort of to me it's the problem is as soon as you pipe up with quote list of or
8:26 pm
five things and you've got to keep it simple and short then somebody is going to say well we gave you seventy percent of it. and the fact is that's exactly the sort of thing that happened with the tea party we were told it was you know we were going to get what we wanted essentially through the elections well one of the things we wanted was linda payloads it into government deficit spending and as you can see that didn't happen so you know there is this there's this movement within government to say oh well you know we can throw you a bone or two it's kind of likely to go up every vehicle outside will quite anymore well go as far as a lot of those tea party members that were elected into office and swept in in two thousand and ten it seems like they were a lot of the ones voting against this deficit spending just didn't have enough of them i guess you could say important also to talk about the differences between the two groups even members of the original tea party wanted that last government and less government regulation most of those down there on wall street believe big banks should be more heavily regulated and also be held accountable for things like
8:27 pm
for example the mortgage meltdown. according to another prominent tea party member there are almost no similarities i want to play this for a car and get your reaction i just think there's a distinction here these people are not like tea partiers they're not law abiding citizens they're camping in a park work here thing isn't allowed they're breaking the laws on the brooklyn bridge that's not tea party behavior that's not america loving behavior. so how about this charge that the occupy wall street protesters are law breaking non america loving citizens i seem to remember this thing called the first amendment and the last time i checked the constitution including the first amendment which it is a part of takes priority over people saying you can't wave signs. i understand that there are people who think that you know this this whole thing with the brooklyn bridge blocking a group just wrong but there is plenty of controversy over exactly who go to who wouldn't blocking what richard whether or not it was a spontaneous act or with the police actually shepherded the people onto the bridge
8:28 pm
and then turn around and walk them in and arrested them well you know if a police officer says walk this direction and you do it and then he turns around slaps handcuffs on you i'm not quite so sure that that's your fault certainly a lot of controversy about that day in brooklyn last week let's talk to you about how both groups are being and have been received by the american people i want to says new poll numbers compiled by time magazine's new national poll it shows that the occupy wall street movement has a fifty four percent favorable rating by the american public tea party rating i thought and percent i wanted to these figures karl doesn't surprise me we have a basic problem here in this country in that he he acts that took place over the last thirty years with regards to national and get within the system generally whether it be in education housing all the fear of medical care for that for all of these things are very complicated and difficult for the general public to
8:29 pm
understand and people in the media in people on wall street like it that way because if you don't understand it then you don't you don't get what happened but the american people know that they've gotten close. and that was karl denninger one of the original tea party founders also for what founder of the website the market taker and that is all the time we have but for more on the stories we covered go to our t. dot com slash usa or you tube dot com slash r t america have a great night christine for. put a picture of me when i was like a million years old on the field with true. confession i am a total get over that high low gravity is exactly and pretty. stupid .
