around the clock around the world of this is r t live in the total number killed in the syrian conflict now stands at well over three thousand activists say at least twelve have died in fresh violence after security forces opened fire on protesters were calling for nationwide demonstrations in support of army defectors who have joined the opposition the government insists they're not revolutionaries but armed gangs that threaten the public. has more. about one hundred eighty kilometers north of damascus is the city of honest on the site of five days of recent deadly clashes between security forces and protesters in which at least thirty died it's close to the cities of homs and hama where most anti assad protests have been taking place evidence of fighting in oliver stone is plain to see there was an air of suspicion the tense mood only broken by children now smiling but only two weeks ago these youngsters were witness to violence in their home town like this eleven
3:02 pm
year old we heard very heavy fire we heard airplanes but didn't see them it sounded like they were flying high we were really afraid and we were crying the whole time . the child was one of the few to talk most of us are locals mean that were hesitant to say anything about what happened telling us they didn't want to get into trouble. the areas governor gives his explanation why the military arrived there were groups of people who had their own demands they had these demands for a little while and then it all escalated when they armed themselves we saw the situation had become a threat to the people not so we decided an intervention should take place in. the end so i would say it's reality for you to hear this stuff and i mean obviously there's a way of what legally come work needs to be here so this was basically. right here are still here now it's time but opposition activists insist
3:03 pm
that these were not on gas or terrorists but army defectors so far the government has said little on the subject of decisions from the military i think it's a kind of a strategy by the government and the weakening the morale of the. divorce so if they talk about the structure. it became a signal that could be there will be more of the fracture so instead of people that are armed gangs or was so with this kind of this well it would serve their purpose but under the circumstances the morale of most affected by the violence and understand is that a ruthless syria and syria. trouble is fled in the us between protesters from the occupy wall street movement and new york police at least fourteen have been arrested scuffles broke out as hundreds of activists
3:04 pm
marched through lower manhattan to wall street reporter is in new york with the latest. those clashes broke out a few hours ago as hundreds of demonstrators want to march through lower manhattan and then some marched into the street after the other were reports and there were images of police on scooters driving into some of the protesters a report of one of the protests are there for run over by al by the scooter that was driven by a police officer there were some also reports of police officers punching some of the demonstrators in at the one one man take him into a scene with blood gushing from his his head and there were also reports that some of these demonstrators when they were marching through in lower manhattan were throwing some glass bottles turning over garbage cans police say that at least one
3:05 pm
scene of the people taking part in the march or arrested now of course this is just the latest wave of clashes between police officers and the protesters camped out here for four weeks but it came after what is being dubbed a huge victory for the occupy movement it was early in the morning that the protesters were supposed to be dictated from their park that they've been camped out in for a day while the city said they wanted to clean up the park this was a request that was made by the property owners. there was about two thousand people in lower manhattan in support of these protesters protecting the barricading human chain was formed around the park because the protesters said they were not going to leave they leave the park on their own and about a half hour before they were to be evacuated or removed the city made an announcement that the police would not remove them that the property owner said that they would deal with the demonstrators directly as they have been camped out
3:06 pm
here for four weeks taking part in the occupy wall street movement grazie. awareness about the dispatches factory among the majority of americans when it comes to between the rich and the poor when it comes to corporate influence over u.s. politics and this clearly is being regarded as a huge victory for the. continuous this is going to stretch way beyond america's borders with the next twenty four hours because on saturday this movement is going to global odd six hundred cities to. seventy countries around the world will be taking part in this type of demonstration protests have been planned everywhere from rome to london to upper lip and people are going to be gathering in different squares in the streets throughout the world to be talking about their own or their right to democracy the way that they would like to see their country in the way
3:07 pm
that they would like their elected officials to be. the people that elect them not the op financial elites so this is not over by any means it is going to be expanding it is going to be going global and of course are covering the story. in new york. in the u.s. these clashes in a whole series between the police and protesters could this perhaps this movement is being. i'm not quite there are definitely you know compared to a lot of commentators i comment compared just to the tea party but they're more broad broader than that if and i think the b. group is trying to co-opt this movement is actually the democratic party they're seeking to divide this is this occupy movement and turn into an extension of the of
3:08 pm
obama's presidential campaign when fortunately so in effect we have could be seeing a political movement here a left wing also to the right wing tea party oh no it's i hope not because so once once that happens this is the chance for a real soul social transformation that's going to be lost in the clones if it becomes a political movement bernardo harker was writing for the new york i'm saying yesterday and is basically he's basically calling this a political disobedience this is a this is not. this is a public this against the artificial left right divide that's what it was fun treat specifically in the united states i don't know what kind of demands. madrid's all these topcat occupy movements are demanding but certainly knighted say they're protesting a policy a policy started by a right wing president and continued by a left wing president and this is let me just quickly ask you having this is going
3:09 pm
to be a political movement but surely it needs a political response will governments around the world and as you've just mentioned madrid and other countries and they will be seeing this campaign taking place tomorrow how will or should the governments respond to this or indeed will they. i hope the gold they don't respond to it with violence that's what i'm hoping as we can see and you know in new york we're seeing in boston what's happening is that the woman is using its police forces to crack down on these image and protests there are nonviolent they're peaceful and they're responding to it by arresting protesters pepper spraying them and. preventing them from actually airing out their grievances talking about those grievances all of these protests is actually united by a common message or is this movement somewhat disjointed with a number of different demands i know to many different banners campaign banners
3:10 pm
having different messages yes dearest but there is they want a unified call a common ground that unifies all these protests or it's a protest against the current status quo it's a protest against this you know it's a protest against. this two party establishment that's basically. that owns you know both houses of the old republic and that's it's a protest against that that's why you know i don't consider just approve a movement a smuggler sitch social joe good to hear from you thank you very much indeed for joining us live in jail at home thanks. one of the occupy wall street movement prepares to go global as we've just mentioned polity is closely watching the rowdies taking place in europe and the u.s. don't miss all special coverage tomorrow saturday october the fifteenth. doctors like growing poverty in the field. by their countries waiting for hours
3:11 pm
while cutting jobs and social spending people across the globe rise up against their government's economic policies follow the worldwide action against austerity live on our t.v. . the european central bank has called on national governments to do their part to ease the debt burden to appreciate spoke ahead of a key meeting of world finance ministers who have gathered in paris to hammer out solutions to the crisis europe correspondent daniel bushell has more. the patience of european central bank does seem to be running out it says that it can't really take the whole burden on itself it really needs the governments to come through the european governments come through and take some actions because the latest country problems with spain it's seeing problems with its solidarity or failure solidarity has had a great of its rating a game which is going to make it even harder for it to raise money and pay off its debts we're expecting protests tomorrow perhaps the biggest protests so far over
3:12 pm
you will start to measure in spain now russia's prime minister has come out and said that europe's governments could solve this problem if they wanted to. the crisis is more political than a financial issue according to different estimates between one and one and trillion dollars is needed the number is big but the user you can handle it it's a political issue because in order to get out of these resources the leading european countries must offer a shoulder to those in trouble political courage so governments in europe are accused of passing the blame no one wants to take responsibility but russia is one of many countries which is concerned by this because of course when the european economies are suffering the rest of the world has a knock on effect told to go is the latest country which is new also there are two measures that means more taxes potentially education health costing more and we are expecting coordinated action coordinated protests across europe including in lisbon
3:13 pm
over those austerity measures over the cuts which are thought to be extremely painful for the population now we've also seen the trees shake saying that he does expect those governments to come through with those cuts in order to balance this budget there is a meeting today and tomorrow of the world's leading finance ministers as they try to tackle this crisis that has been in portugal might just be too painful for the people to take these austerity measures michel. i'm afraid i'm afraid i'm afraid that. in the active member of the portuguese indignados delish and its participants believe the government is hell bent on pleasing the rich and powerful and ignores the needs of the people. we are.
3:14 pm
it's happening. here. the worst rate of unemployment in thirty years at over twelve percent rising taxes and falling wages are the reality of portugal's simply present situation things are so bad people are no making comparisons with cataclysmic periods in their history and looking to them for inspiration in a few centuries ago was a situation similar to its present state. but one. managed to pull the country out of the crisis three hundred years on however if you believe everybody. is similar to. the portuguese are they not those saying the solution is to create more jobs and cut unnecessary expenditure but the government
3:15 pm
seventy eight billion euro bailout earlier this year following in the footsteps of greece and ireland to paid back. which will see longer working hours less holidays and even listened to the christmas bonuses which most workers enjoyed at the. top of kids. if you can't you can't do it you can't do it because you can't do it and. it's. system and the political system that is. completely. conditioned. personally the biggest thing and does the crisis grows so too do the ranks of the outraged members of the indignados people do not forget.
3:16 pm
democratic national governments the. rabbit should all be your problem not the cries. of the call for global direction or looked over the fifteenth from the occupy wall street movement in new york is expected to get a loud response in portugal but for many of those who will fill the streets here it's not so much about evolution as it is about turning it into a simple fight for survival in. lisbon. and more coverage of the unfolding crisis in europe is available at the moment on our website that's dot com also online at the moment the main suspect in the alleged murder of alexander litvinenko says his lawyers have been denied access to information about the case
3:17 pm
as a court starts looking into the death of the former russian agent behind closed doors also forget lethal injections horrify instead if you have a republican politician in the u.s. state of florida who says people sentenced to death should be thrown off a bridge on the full story on the team. the u.s. president has taken a firm stand against iran promising tough sanctions against. country over claims it was plotting to kill the saudi ambassador to washington barack obama says there's enough evidence of iran's guilt and is calling on the international community to make it pay for its behavior by further isolating tehran wolf for more on this i'm now joined by clifton he's a national security reporter for think progress dot org thanks very much indeed for being with us now if the international community does join washington's calls to isolate iran even further after this alleged plot and with that she leave tehran.
3:18 pm
well i think the answer to that really lies in the details of what type of sanctions or what type of response united states is able to gain support from the international community in imposing the types of things that have been discussed thus far would be quite powerful and would be potentially devastating to iran's economy as my colleague ali has written senator mark kirk has rather openly spoken about promoting multilateral sanctions on bank markazi the iranian central bank now that could have the effect of affectively collapsing the iranian currency and devastating their economy if it's anything like what happened in iraq that brought up the infant mortality rate dramatically so i think it really will have to see what the details are of what's proposed right now i think that we're still just trying to look at the details of the allegations and and see where this goes but
3:19 pm
you are talking about those sanctions on iran's central bank would they really have the desired effect or would they prove to be really highly provocative whereby i understand that some iranian officials have said they would consider that as an act of war now is that exactly what the u.s. is trying to get out of tehran that sort of retaliatory response. well you're right i mean there's no other way to see that the definitely a provocative act the united states in the administration's position is that iran has engaged in a very provocative act now i think i think a lot of this will have to do with with the evidence that's brought forward to back up the allegations that have been made us far as for iran's response i think there's a lot of variables there and a large part of it i believe will go back to how large of an international group and coalition the obama administration can bring together at the united nations right now i think they will find it very difficult to to engage both russia and
3:20 pm
china and even potentially countries like india who have real commercial ties to tehran and to the government there and i think that countries like that will find it very difficult to sign onto to a response which is which is as you said seen as provocative and potentially undermining both the iranian economy and the government whatever substance there is behind these allegations obviously there's a lot of speculation about the credibility of these charges but nevertheless the u.s. is putting pressure on iran at the moment now what is the overall reason behind this emotive visit to the country's perceived nuclear threat or is it actually to push for regime change. i think that there was is and will be sort of two tracks of language you'll hear used certainly at the united nations and when talking about a multilateral sanctions framework i suspect the language will really be focused on
3:21 pm
iran's nuclear program united states may have more backing for that type of a response especially with rumors of a new i.a.e.a. report coming out next month which could have some very strong language about the nuclear program now domestically within the united states i think you're going to see a lot of language that's in very very very confrontational and speaking about explicitly about regime change already this morning at the house foreign affairs committee a number of the members of that committee in hearings they were holding about iran and syria were openly speaking about seeking regime change in tehran so as i say i think you'll see a very different set of words and language used at the international level than that used at the domestic level just briefly and finally this isn't just about the u.s. and iran these allegations also of course involve saudi arabia how would the accusations of this foiled plot actually influence now iran's relations with the arab world. well i think that that's something that those of us who have been following this
3:22 pm
closely have continued to have real questions about and frankly some confusion about what would be the motivations for tehran to engage in this you know very poorly put together plot it would seem u.s. saudi relations have actually been strained recently especially during the arab spring when the united states and saudi arabia weren't always pulling in the same direction so i and many people have said that well the best thing tehran can do for themselves and they certainly have their own issues with saudi arabia is to do nothing try to stay out of it and don't engage too much in the arab spring and let the saudi u.s. tensions play out now these allegations and this suppose that assassination plot would seem to actually imprint the u.s. of the saudis closer together and by certainly over the over the few days we've had to see these these these allegations play out both the saudis and the americans seem to have been speaking off the same page so there seems to be very close coordination right now between the saudis and the americans in this wouldn't seem
3:23 pm
