around the clock around the world this is r.t. live here in moscow good to have you with us and i cry against corporate greed has risen up in almost a thousand cities as the protests that started in new york global people have taken their anger to the streets of europe asia and australia saying their governments have been taken over by big business well let's first focus on europe and talk to our correspondent daniel bushell he is in brussels now daniel and much of europe has been named the political center of the e.u. where you are of course there in brussels but all the politicians listening. well all sources initially by this protest setting up camp here on the grounds that there was no running water for them but they have now caved in basically to weight of numbers and the protesters here plan to set up an all night have created a so-called alternative parliament which serves the people not the financial elite
3:02 pm
they're protesting that governments keep risking failed private banks with public money the latest outrage is one of belgium's biggest lenders takes the art which has actually been bailed out by the government to do is to make the cost of five thousand euro per text taxpayer although all the meanwhile the c.e.o. of the bank received was promised a six hundred thousand euro bogus laws for last year while taking the bank basically on the brink of its collapse now his headquarters here in brussels i think we can see some pictures of activists who broke windows today sprayed slogans they vandalized the building the headquarters of several activists were in fact arrested we can now hear from some of those protesters. the position should speak for the people and not for the bankers i think that if least if we can start there should be a really good beginning we're
3:03 pm
a group of sardinian student body need telling differences we. need to speak against a system that can just. reach. banks. and . investors. but people are rushing and we try to save the banks not the people that seriously. it's a very loud demonstration it's a very hard to hear yourself above the sheltering and cheering the protesting against bankers a bit irresponsible governments and the numbers here keep growing through the noise a move to bring you the latest through the noise daniel thanks very much indeed for that that's the new bushel there live in brussels now we turn to madrid where thousands of people have gathered in the spanish capital you know. one of the protesters there saying. well bill at this point the protesters are continuing to do what they were doing
3:04 pm
for the last several hours and that is they're very loudly expressing their indignation of with the government spain has just been downgraded by standard force from eight to double a minus. rating so so really people here have had a lot of things to talk about to their governments the jobless rate the rate is the highest in the eurozone in fact is the highest among the youngest people here so really the at the at the spanish population the toy age twenty four to thirty five are the people who are left without jobs and these have been protesting since the middle of may so they really have gotten a really good hangover of the way of organizing things they have been dancing they have been singing. the fact the protest in madrid have been carrying on a sort of a festive mood as a matter of fact other have been performances put on they're actually singing right now but here's the interesting thing. the protesters in the heart of the spanish capital have decided to take
3:05 pm
a city to include not just the issues of their home country in their protests we have seen a lot of doubters calling on for the e.u. and nato to abandon their action in libya there how we have seen a lot of palestinian flags we have seen some posters would say that palestine and libya are also being a are falling victim to the capital. deals so really people here are starting to broaden this specter off their concerns and it does not look like they're going to go home any time soon because at this point the protests the protests are very peaceful ah there is some police presence but they're merely here at this point to observe although the protests were dispersed several months ago does not look like that is going to be repeated this time around so we're in for an interesting and a very vigorous and well i have to say this is best if not for a lot of protesters here because people in space seem to approach these this movement with their hearts and minds really into it thanks very much indeed ian
3:06 pm
they're going to live in madrid and also daniel bushell in brussels. dozens of demonstrators have been injured in rome as italian police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds protests to smash up windows torch calls and hold bottles as the demo against corporate greed and austerity measures turned violent while for more on the situation in the italian capital i'm now joined by moritz year he's a journalist and presenter thanks very much indeed for being asleep being with us now. in a very different situation to what we just heard about in madrid where quite a festive atmosphere and indeed also in london so tell us just how bad is the situation now of things getting out of control. this mission now is very controlled actually there were two demonstration or one huge demonstration of one hundred thousand people. exactly the same like in my dream. people with no
3:07 pm
future but educated people with a degree a university degree who is not only no chance and that was the majority of the people then there was another demonstration that five on that of the so-called black blocs they were in the beginning of the demonstration and they started to attack police and police reacted very mildly because they used to. smoke but not really maybe water cannons that night but the yearly reaction of the police was very. calm not the not exaggerated yet to the people that five and the people off. to the huge are the most asian and pacific in a station that was behind them so now we everybody's talking about the violence in the room of course the violence but that was not the major meaning of the meaning of that we will tell you the demonstration laid by sleeping people and that also
3:08 pm
was the reaction of the people the for instance the bank italia drag the future head of the cia. people were right which which people know the black bloc said the one i live fifty thousand people that were demonstrating in rome well actually just what you actually looking at the images that it certainly does look like a very violent situation there in rome very different to what we've seen elsewhere of course there has been violence in new york but is that on a danger though that this whole movement could be hijacked by and it casts. well they try to do that they try exactly to i jack at the demonstration but of course at the media go this malteser were the fiery and now the media mess that is an a she in the roma but is not so and and also doesn't make any
3:09 pm
sense because to attack the police that is is completely meaningless to the real problem that they were screaming in all the demonstration world was no money to bank and money to people money to state no money to bank that was a message of cream to police isn't that was the situation of the student because in some city they don't even have a gas to go to patch will they have to wait to be cool and they just move in with the car only when they own the cold because they have no gas in this edition of the police is a really bad as other people immediately so the police is not the enemy will these protesters be listened to that's the question. well. actually the people that were attacking police were very young people not even university people they were they looked really like teenagers. because they were
3:10 pm
masked. it was clear that they were doing to attack but just briefly though and finally i mean they they want to have an impact on governments and of course the corporate world that seems to be the essence of all of this do you think there really is a feeling that they could achieve that there in rome just briefly. very briefly no i don't think the north. ok we'll leave it there thank you very much money journalist and presenter joining us live in rome well london is one of the main centers of saturday's occupy together action and artie's of a better has been following events all day there and brings us the latest. well there was a worry that tempers could boil over a little bit earlier as police introduced a very strict cordon places were not allowed into the protest nor were they allowed
3:11 pm
to exit in a few arrests were made and at least three were made those that's according to the police twitter feed but since then the cordon has been relaxed and the feeling amongst the protesters in the square behind me behind those police vans is is quite buoyant actually it's almost a carnival atmosphere that people are chanting they're playing drums and singing and dancing even as well at the moment some news reports are saying is up to three thousand protesters there is difficult to put a number on it certainly a thousand that gathered on the steps of the one of the st paul's cathedral very nearby to the london stock exchange now they're angry that their money taxpayers' money is continuing to be spent to fail out banks they're angry that the people in charge of those banks who they see as the architects are architects of the economic crisis are being rewarded with bonuses and they're angry that the the the way the country is being run and and the phrases continuously being used today is that we are the ninety nine percent what that refers to is that they're the majority who make up this country yet that they do not have
3:12 pm
a say in how the country is run so they're saying it's now time to take back some power now i'm joined now to talk more about this by tea matthews who is a prominent anti cuts campaign team thanks very much for speaking to auntie now first of all what prompted this process and how was it organized well as part of a sea by occupy wall street and the other occupations that we've seen in america and across the world and over see previous anger that's been expressed by students and to cause activists so that was the beginning the real emotional basis of it what is it exactly the you want and how are you going to figure that out i think you're right to say that it's a mixture of things we both want the politics to change so that's the way that our fares are run so we need to facilitate a space whereby the ninety nine percent can be heard we need to increase participation so the whole point of the demonstration is to make people feel empowered feel that they can have a say in. way decisions are made that's a basic fundamental right and need in society today and that's why we're starting with our process here clearly then once you've established that process and it's
3:13 pm
repeated hopefully as many places across the world in our own country then you'll start to see the policy changes we really require and also are supported by the mass of people that means massive reforms to the banking system and to the cuts program and. democratic reforms in this country to matthew thanks very much for speaking to r.t. . so just being to hear people hear you soon realize that people really do think they're going to affect some sort of change here they're really digging their heels in people i've spoken to who set up tents they brought stoves even brought their kids here really prepared to go to whatever measures it takes to to effect that change. i've been there in london well to the u.s. now where the wall street movement started with a tiny group of activists camping outside the new york stock exchange in mid september people were protesting against caps pocketing bonuses while american taxpayers were struggling to make ends meet report has been following the rallies since then the situation is extremely crowded i'm standing here in the park where
3:14 pm
the occupy movement was born four weeks ago and i have to tell you this is the largest that i have ever seen. in this park. have been camped out for weeks raising awareness of what they say really they call the greedy corporate influence politics but there are probably about. two thousand people here but this is not the only place in new york city where. protesters are gathering. in washington square park crowd of about a thousand people have gathered together. to reinforce. the occupy movement there was also a march that was taking place a few hours ago two hundred people walking to the chase bank with the drawing bank accounts withdrawing their money and. all of this of course is leading up to
3:15 pm
a convergence that is planning to take place in times square thousands of people possibly tens of thousands of people are expected to show up so far as i mentioned things have been peaceful there is a large police presence in and around all over the city here and on wall street all over. the world to see any reports of conflicts we did have a chance to speak with some of those that have turned out today here's a little bit of what they have to say people are getting what they. are still struggling there. and i feel like that's a problem. everything is split. there's
3:16 pm
all these people here that feel the same exact way that's just a little bit of white thousands of people are talking about this street they also. say you know that the richest people in the. bottom of the population living in the. huge his. you know there's a feeling among this crowd because they feel this occupation. because they are. officials are leading this. global movement let's talk to an expert told me he's a sociology professor at brooklyn college in new york. thanks very much for being with us here on r.t. well as we've heard the protests in new york. there is still a huge police presence in the city you've obviously been taking in these protests
3:17 pm
do you think that they could be the potential for future trouble. there is certainly a potential of that you know every time we've had a large gathering there has been some pretty precipitous police activity just update what your correspondent said earlier several dozen people were arrested at the chase at one branch of chase bank just within the last hour or two these were people who had accounts with chase bank were trying to close those accounts and the police went in and arrested them for requesting to do so the police here seem to be unable to distinguish between what is the sensually a peaceful if disruptive or disorderly march and are and are gathering that is truly a gauge and destructive activity like we've seen in some other cases so there's been a kind of consistent overreaction by the police here that has really criminalized
3:18 pm
a sentence on the board ways alex and let me so see about the nature of these protests it seems that many people actually demanding the same thing and there seems to be a number of issues that people are talking about not a lot of coherence in this protest has begun that demands it could that actually detract from the final goal and that should be maybe it won't achieve what people really want because if it's slightly disjointed nature well i think we have to think about this as a broad movement rather than a particular action or particular organization and i think we are seeing some more specific demands come out of particular actions here in new york city this week there were some specific demands put forward by some of the demonstrations including continuing attacks on millionaires that the democratic governor wants to get rid of you want to give a tax break to millionaires in the face of layoffs of school employees etc so that's an example of the kind of concrete demands that are starting to emerge i think more work is going to happen on this as more people and organized groups to
3:19 pm
join this movement will see more articulation of these two man talking about. another phrase initiating global change now in what way do you think governments and big business should be responding to this or will they to simply ignore it and hope it all goes away well what's interesting from the new york perspective today is you know the extent of the global connectivity of protests the biggest day of collective protest activity since february two thousand and three when people were protesting the iraq war and i think in many ways the u.s. is kind of late to the game that we've seen these demonstrations against austerity against corruption against concentrated economic and political power around the world and so what's important is not so much the specific demands but the fact that there is a now a connected in the word unaided global movement that's calling attention to what i
3:20 pm
think is pretty transparent everyone which is kind of the rocky relationship between economic and political elites around the world just very briefly you talk about broad movement global movement you're a sociologist could this perhaps be the dawn of something new in society developing just briefly well i just think that we've seen a new level of anti austerity activism and i think there are going to be significant reforms and restrictions on liberal free trade policies as a result thank you very much indeed i thought a professor of sociology at brooklyn college in new york thank you tom pleasure. well as the occupy movement goes global let's try and track what's going on and where at the moment people in almost one hundred countries from asia in the americas to africa europe united in protest in berlin police clashed with protesters after they tried to break through security barriers surrounding the parliament they pull fences away as police try to restore order crowds in athens raged against the bankers finances and politicians they queues are ruining their economy and condemning millions to poverty and chip protesters of also taking to
3:21 pm
the streets of tokyo decrying big business and income inequality as well as directing their anger at nuclear power companies taiwan's capital taipei also played host to an occupy movement many rallied outside the city's financial turmoil which they view as a symbol of corporate excess. well throughout the day our correspondents in europe and the us as you've seen will be bringing the latest on the occupy together rallies stay with r.t. for our special live coverage. like rolling poverty and other. countries waiting for you while putting jobs and social spending people across the globe rise up against their government's economic policies follow the worldwide action against austerity live on our t.v. . to other news this hour of the seven months of anti regime demonstrations and over three thousand killed in crackdowns the u.n. has warned that syria is heading for

a full blown civil war and with rumors of army defectors joining the opposition the gap between the two sides in the conflict appears to be widening the parties to reports while people in the capital of calling for dialogue other parts of the country are demanding an end to the rule of president assad. well here in the center of the syrian capital it is very quiet today it's a day off for most people but of course beneath that calmness the conflict in the country goes on between the government and its supporters and the opposition now what it one thing is clear though when we try to approach people here and bring up the issue of the cost they could almost always turns into a heated debate a very emotional discussion depending on the stand that they take it. means i see that there are a pullman's not all positions we don't know who they are yet syria is under attack for its stance but we will not give up. the opposition comes down be rational and go into a dialogue with the regime i was the government position and be more open minded.
3:23 pm
but again we are going to mask the opinion we hear most here is that people are asking who is the opposition who is causing this instability and many of them bring up the words armed gang state think that these are just people who want to destabilize the country of course this is a position that the government had taken from the very beginning of the conflict but it is a different story when you go outside of the capital we went to the city of understand it was inside the five days of fighting between security forces and anti-government protesters and we felt the tension there there were so a lot of armed forces according to of course again the government they said that they were fighting against armed groups who were trying to create trouble for the local so that according to some activists they are saying that these are not armed groups of these were peaceful protesters as well as army defectors with a strong army defecting defector contingent in all just on it's very difficult to verify the exactly what happened in the city because people are very hesitant to talk together so a lot of military the army still in that city a but that is what's happening on the ground it's not very clear it's hard to get
3:24 pm
the truth on each matter but on the political level though president bashar al assad has said that he will set up a constitutional committee within the next couple of days to debate with the opposition various sides of the opposition. the dialogue should have a program and a timeline we must clearly understand what kind of results we want to achieve now one of the sticking points of the constitutional reform is article eight which states that the ruling baath party is the leader of the state and the opposition says that this matter even if a multi-party system is introduced without repealing this article it won't change anything but again that depends on the dialogue that both sides are going to have to take and both sides pro and anti government sides always say at the end of the day it's not what is said it's this is sarah lee of both sides in doing what they say they will do so it's down to the action in the next few months. reporting there were more stories eye catching video blogs and analysis all available for you right
