4:01 pm
around the clock around the world this is all in good to have you with us this hour a global outcry against corporate greed has risen up in almost a thousand cities worldwide people have taken to the streets saying they have been taken over by big business the occupy wall street movement began in new york quickly spreading across the u.s. to los angeles and washington among its since gone global with asia joining in the demands for change in europe to hundreds of cities are taking part in the protests one that's now take a closer look at what's happening around the world with correspondents we've got marina in new york bennett in london daniel bushell in brussels and in madrid. first we go live to marina. marina has a huge turnout on the streets there in new york one of people saying the. movement . was you mentioned this. is the
4:02 pm
largest that it's been in the past four weeks let's remember it was four weeks ago when the. movement started off here in zuccotti park where i'm standing by wall street what these optimists are saying right now is they feel that. they feel that they are moving forward. the way. thousands of people have been. showing their support for the occupy movement or taking part in it all day a lot. in the park. there were hundreds. earlier in the day to withdraw their money and close their accounts. in another. washington square park also at the center. that have
4:03 pm
been boy voiced by the optimism of the occupy wall street movement and just about an hour ago we received reports that at least twenty people that went into a citibank to close their accounts were arrested by plainclothes police officers inside citibank. has been speaking to all those that have come out onto the streets today to voice their anger their frustration with the way that the u.s. system is run here is a little bit of what they had to say. i don't have anybody in congress or they do their congress is a board and paid for by special interests the ones who control the government veterans who write legislation right now corporations are kind of running the government by funding political campaigns and as politicians get into office and of course they're going to do what's in the corporations best interest because that's who is funding them and that's who's giving the money and the people are kind of
4:04 pm
left in the dust people aren't getting what they deserve people are still struggling they work their full time jobs they work overtime and yet there's people who can't even hour a week to work. these are the sentiments that have been a voice. by the occupy movement for four weeks now but in the next few hours we are expecting to see thousands gather in times square where they are. focusing also on the amount of money the u.s. has spent overseas odd wars the decisions that are made when it comes to u.s. foreign policy in the decisions that these activists say are the wrong ones the ones that they say are leading the country drive. and while the u.s. leaders of course they believe are acting in their interests not in the best interest of all americans. live update from new york marina port there so
4:05 pm
march is in the u.s. peaceful at the moment as we've just been hearing but what about europe by the bennett tees along then i will we saw huge public unrest there just a few months ago how are things looking where you are at the moment. for the large part the protests today have been very peaceful but the atmosphere here is just suddenly the last few moments got a lot more tense that's because the police still in fast numbers here and you can see the line of police fans behind me the protesters together behind there the police have been trying to disperse the last few remaining hundred hardcore protesters from the steps in front of the cathedral they say they're trying to disperse and peacefully they set up a cordon around them they're not letting anyone into that cordon but they wanted people to leave but they did as they started to disperse those people on the on the pavement the protesters they didn't want to move they say they have a right to remain on the on the sidewalk there and to carry out their protest peacefully. when they didn't move the. actions did escalate there was
4:06 pm
a lot of pushing and shoving arrests were made i think and see some of those pictures now a lot of shouting police have brought out dogs as well and and as the crowd chanted shame on you to the police. the atmosphere got a lot a lot more tense now not quite sure is going to happen now because the what the police want to do is disperse these protests because they say this is private property they have no right to remain here now as for the protesters earlier today there were reports of almost three thousand people being present here there certainly well over thousands talking to them in terms of. an end goal is their kind of pass a little bit disorganized but talking to these you realize that's not really the point the point of why they're here today is because it's just to register their anger nass really was galvanizing all of them anger that their money taxpayers' money is continue to be spent on bailing out banks they're angry that the people in charge of those banks are still getting bonuses and they see. that is the
4:07 pm
architects of the economic disaster as it is being rewarded and also just generally angry at the way the country is being run and the phrases being continuously used today in terms of a slogan for today's action is we are the ninety nine percent they say they are the they make up the vast majority of this country they have no control of how the country's being run today they say this is their chance to strike back and this is what some of them had to say. ok we were sleeping operators. sleeping bags so you know there was like a secure food stay focused days possible the slogan that began on wall street we are the ninety nine percent oppose in britain as well because we know that the bankers and the bosses are getting bailed out by the government and we are being forced to pay the price for. speaking to be real is really amazing that you can really get a sense that they think they really beginning to have
4:08 pm
a say here and then something will really change down to the really digging in their heels of people with tents they're setting up camp here there where they might not be to spend the night here but they're prepared to go somewhere else because they really think this is the start of something they could change something similar to the occupy wall street as if heard from arena point i'm in new york and they're prepared to stay for as long as it takes until they have their voice heard by the thanks very much indeed for that either ben and live in the mall europeans have been focusing their anger on the center of the governance and politics and that of course is brussels and daniel bushell is there. daniel protesters from around europe where you are does it look like the politicians might take any notice whatsoever of this movement. the revolutionary mood here the crowds that despite the cold is getting bigger and it's getting angrier sheltering slogans against the banks and the governments which keep. restoring them with public money
4:09 pm
all soldiers first tried to ban this grouping saying there was no running water for them which many stores an excuse to stop them getting together but they have finally given in to the weights of numbers and they now planned an all noise alternative cold war will they calling which is for the people in the interests of the people and not the financial elites now the latest scandal is. one of bill jones largest lenders which are has been bailed out just now by the government to the tune estimated over costing five thousand euros per taxpayer along saw it the c.e.o. of that bank being promised for last year a bonus of six hundred thousand euros in practice for practically leading the bank to the brink of collapse no the people have also been shocked by the u.s. reaction when it was almost about the significance of the protests to sports person for the european commission i just don't see what does it mean to us. the e.u. employment commissioner joke the protests for justice should go to frankfurt
4:10 pm
instead of brussels frankfurt being the home of the european central bank central to this euro crisis at the moment it's a national movement people are coming here from all across europe people have actually mulched for months buy food for example from the likes of spain to get here seeing brussels really as the heart of the e.u. and the problem here thanks indeed daniel bushell in brussels and talking of spain we now go to any now going to go in madrid the capital of a country which has europe's worst unemployment rate when something like a forty percent of young people out of work at the moment you know it looks like a sour the size of the crowd is really building there certainly building up from where we saw you last time. definitely that is that's right i think here it is if people are really i think they are making their voices heard. you have to think about the fact that the
4:11 pm
occupy wall street was it may have spurred protests over the last several weeks but there are some who believe that those people in new york were actually inspired by the protests which began here in spain in the middle of may of this year. thousands hundreds of thousands of young people not just in madrid but in cities in towns all across the country were protesting the austerity music measures taken by their governments odd they were protesting against the fact that a lot of people have been left without jobs that a lot of people are forced to move out of their homes and by looks of it these people these people who are on the streets of madrid today they believe that their voices are in fact being heard and they are making a difference of the world let's have a listen to what they had to to say earlier. of. the isn't. time done. to talk and to understand that coming to an important change and how much he wants to come and i thought is that was that we want
4:12 pm
a transparent horizontal society with the string then the spanish side the american outlook and that will face a global winter so. this may sound like quite a big goal but you have to understand that these people who have gathered here they actually have a pretty much everything to lose a lot of these people are just twenty five twenty four to thirty five they have gotten their education they have invested money into it they are trying to build a family try to build homes and they're robbed of that opportunity because the country spain is in dire situation right now it's been downgraded on an almost weekly basis the common situations than credibly bad and these people here for them it's literally a matter of survival of making a difference of convincing the government not just their own government but governments world over that something has to be done because they really need to see that there is a future for them and they are going to stay here in their. right to make their
4:13 pm
demands heard and they are filled with that hope that they can make a difference because they need to continue to fight for something in order to survive in order to make ends meet i mean i'm going to go in madrid daniel bushell in brussels i hope bennett in london and marina important in new york thank you all for the moment. well for more on this global movement let's talk to. a political blogger and joins us live now from the states from los angeles. the aim behind this movement seems to be a call to initiate global change what exactly is that change and how can it be achieved well i think there's two different things are dealing with here one is the is the general issue which is one of treating the younger people with fairness and trying to keep both of the promises that we feel we've been made by society for instance you referred earlier report to the issue of how expensive education is and that's a very simple problem but we have the united states however for each of the protest
4:14 pm
movements it seems like the specific issue is something different and each country needs to be able to figure out its own solution to the four hundred one which is that young people have new avenues to advance to succeed and shew create a lives that our parents generation you're talking about a couple of different issues there but when you look at the campaign is in the messages on their banners it seems that a number of them have different messages and it seems that this run of disparate this this movement with no real coherence and does that vagueness perhaps undermine the actual success the potential success of a movement like this. you know i actually thought that for a while but over the past few days it seemed to me that that and i actually heard one of the protesters here your critics out there race that we've been here for thirty days our government's been there for two hundred years give us a chance to figure it out so i agree that it is an issue but i think that it's something that as people spend more time in the open debating the strong. it will
4:15 pm
be able to come up with real workable solutions now where there's the the political will to deal with this you know is still a problem but i do think that these people need time to figure out exactly how to solve these problems they're just now becoming aware of of of how widespread the anger is and how widespread sort of unfairness is so i think that they will come up with that but it's going to take them a little bit of time to get back over what you had on the idea workable solutions of course in a political response to all of this do you think the big business and government will hope this will just go away or do you think we could see some sort of reaction from them. you know i think they're still hoping it'll go away because all previous movements have but this one feels much more substantial to me i it's growing and it's growing you know steadily if quickly and i don't think that you know for instance in your eyes and maybe try to keep the protesters out it's because they want to beat it out of the protesters resisted and they were allowed to stay and so
4:16 pm
i think small little steps like that will you know after weeks and maybe months convince these people that the protests are here to stay and that if they want the people to get out their hearts and to get out of their bases they need for vital war a critical solution and make them so. just briefly the nature of the protests has been mainly also i think sorry we just lost the contact that can hear me can hear me just hear you have to just very briefly and finally the nature of the protests generally have been a peaceful london a festive atmosphere there but of course in spain we've seen the reports of mass militants operating and causing significant violence in the capital the and of course we've seen violence in new york is there a danger that this whole movement could actually be hijacked by i kissed. fortunately there is always that danger and you know it was certainly. in rome to
4:17 pm
protest exactly to. try to stop it because it is very possible that as we. started she says. it all it will turn for me you know a concentrated focus protest about the issues it excuse for you. to release. is. written by a great here we have to say co-founder of the daily banter political blog joining us live there from the states thanks for your time thank you very much so is the occupy movement goes global let's try and track what's going on and where at the moment people in almost one hundred countries from asia and the americas to africa and europe are united in protest at the moment dozens were injured in rome as we've just been talking about as italian police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds protesters smashed windows torch cars and held bottles as the demo against corporate greed and austerity measures turned violent the defense ministry building was also set ablaze plumes of smoke was seen booing the other coliseum and other parts of the city center and burned in police clashed with protesters after
4:18 pm
they tried to break through security barriers surrounding the parliament they call centers away as police try to restore order in athens raged against the bankers finances and politicians and the queues of ruining their economy and condemning millions to poverty and hardship testers have also taken to the streets of tokyo decrying big business and income inequality as well as directing their anger at nuclear power companies taiwan's capital taipei also played host to an occupy movement many rallied outside the city's financial which they view as a symbol of corporate excess. the echoes of this global movement of also being heard in the middle east the nazis paula is in israel and witnessed the demonstrations in tel aviv. hundreds of people it was a gathering here in tel aviv where many of the faces are familiar as the organizers of the social protest movement that has been taking place across this country for several months now have given a full weight and backing to this global movement in fact as you can see there
4:19 pm
hundreds of people here they've mobilized themselves once again on line at the moment they're holding small discussion groups talking about issues such as tackling poverty being part of this international movement when you talk to people here they say that while it's a pity that they're not really actively participating in these wall street protests they certainly support them and the protests and the demonstrations here in israel will continue to grow and till the government meets their demands i think that we need to continue and have some demonstration is the big event like this one or a smaller event but we need to keep in the mind of the people to know that we still don't have any solution we still don't have anything from the government that's a specific purpose aleutian for the situation we we are only into it the slogan occupy wall street here in israel has been translated into occupied rothschild boulevard rothschild boulevard being the street where for nearly three months protesters pitched tents in defiance against this country's socio economic policies earlier this month those tents did come down after an extensive court battle
4:20 pm
between a television municipality and the demonstrators society here in israel we are witnessing people very much part of this global revolution movement you need to remember that the last few months have seen the largest demonstrations in this country's sixty three year old history with nearly a million people taking to the streets policy r.t. television. throughout the day our correspondents in europe and us will bring you the latest on the occupy together rallies stay with r.t. for our special coverage. why growing poverty and other. countries waiting for hours while cutting jobs and social spending people across the globe rise up against their government's economic policies follow the world wide action against austerity live on our t.v. . to other news this hour after seven months of anti regime demonstrations and over three thousand killed in crackdowns the un has warned that syria is heading for
4:21 pm
a full blown civil war with rumors of army defectors joining the opposition the gap between the two sides in the conflict appears to be widening as i see reports while people in the capital of calling for dialogue other parts of the country demanding an end to the rule of president assad. well here in the center of the syrian capital it is very quiet today it's a day off for most people but of course beneath that calmness a call to in the country goes on between the government and its supporters and the opposition now what it one thing is clear that when we try to approach people here and bring up the issue of the cost they could almost always turns into a heated debate a very emotional discussion depending on the stand that they take. you know when it's real their opponents not all positions we don't know who they are yet syria is under attack through storms but we will not give up. calms down be rational and go into a dialogue with the regime i was the government position and be more open minded.
4:22 pm
but again we are in damascus opinion we hear most here is that people are asking who is the opposition who is causing this instability and many of them bring up the words armed gang state think that these are just people who want to destabilize the country of course this is a position that the government had taken from the very beginning of the conflict but it is a different story when you go outside of the capital we went to the city of understand it was inside the five days of fighting between security forces and anti-government protesters and we felt the tension there there were so a lot of armed forces according to of course again the government they said that they were fighting against armed groups who were trying to create trouble for the local so that according to some activists they're saying that these are not armed groups that these were peaceful protesters as well as army defectors with a strong army defecting defector contingent in all just on it's very difficult to verify the exactly what happened in the city because people are very hesitant to talk together so a lot of military the army still in that city
4:23 pm
a but that is what's happening on the ground it's not very clear it's hard to get the truth on each matter but on the political level though president bashar al assad has said that he will set up a constitutional committee within the next couple of days to debate with the opposition various sides of the opposition. reform. the dialogue should have a program and a timeline we must clearly understand what kind of results we want to achieve now one of the sticking points of the constitutional reform is article eight which states that the ruling baath party is the leader of the state and the opposition says that this matter even if a multi-party system is introduced without repealing this article it won't change anything but again that depends on the dialogue that both sides are going to have to take and both sides pro and anti governmental sides always say at the end of the day it's not what is said it's the sincerity of both sides in doing what they say they will do so it's down to the action in the next few months. as our city
