syria's president promises to meet protestors demand for the new constitution and multi-party elections as the number killed in the civil conflict now rises to three thousand. welcome it's ten pm sunday night here in moscow you're watching the weekly here on r.t. or rather for the top stories of the past seven days with me kevin zero in and first dozens of arrests have been made across the u.s. as police move to contain what's thought to be the biggest wave of occupy wall street demonstrations so far the ongoing city campaign against big banks is already lasted for almost five weeks artie's lucy come from new york to follow it live for us loosing very good even cheap we've been getting reports earlier on today the scores were arrested in chicago just
2:02 pm
a bit earlier in fact in this latest display of discontent bring us up to date if you will on what you know. i there well we know that about a hundred and seventy five wall street protesters were in fact arrested in chicago there was also scores of arrests in arizona and denver and of course new york the chicago situation was very similar to what we saw what i'll describe in a moment of what happened to me or they were there was a bunch of protesters at about five hundred perhaps in one of the parks there camped out the police officers that they had to get their tags alex by a certain time eleven pm they had not done so and the police officers storm day and cutting down tents and arresting people left and right essentially what we witnessed in new york was extremely extremely disturbing from the mass convergence the rally in times square where we were essentially corralled for hours there was a total of about ninety protesters who were arrested by police officers yesterday evening peaceful protesters we saw police on horseback sort of cloud into the crowd
2:03 pm
scaring people stomping on some protesters there were several police officers on scooters that had run over protesters we saw instances of protesters beaten with police by the police with the taunts i personally witnessed at least four arrests in times square total of seven arrests in times square in fact most of those peaceful protesters who were sitting down who were taken by the police and slammed down face first onto the ground and violently dragged away with our riot police counterterrorism police officers really disturbing stuff later on in this is that what we had actually had a chance to discuss yesterday evening later on a large group of about a thousand thousand five hundred protesters have gathered in a different park in downtown new york called washington square park near new york university down there and they were debating whether or not to occupy that park as well and that a group made a general decision not to do so but several individuals about two dozen or so decided to stay back to just say stay their grounds to try to occupy that space
2:04 pm
because really the thousands of protesters who are turned out at zuko. park simply there's no room for them there's no room for them to camp out anymore and so what we saw was an unprecedented display of force by the new york city police department in washington square park just to drive those two dozen or so protesters out we saw the entire park surrounded by riot police have rolled out several school buses n.y.p.d. school buses presumably to deal with people that they would arrest they kept all journalists out of the park pardon me i was trying to film with several other journalists who were standing next to me we were clearly marked as press i had my credentials i i started i was a press reporter they had shown these strange a tactical strobe lights a really powerful strobe lights into our cameras and our eyes were prevented from seeing and getting any clearer images as they were making the arrests of the protesters there very unprecedented side type of behavior by the police and yet it was actually the first time in my personal experience here on the ground in new
2:05 pm
york i didn't feel comfortable that i didn't really feel safe as a reporter. to do what you're telling us to see come from over in new york thanks very much and of course these anti greed protests of not just to cause trouble in america with a lot of allegedly granderson elsewhere as well so predicting even more violence on the streets of american cities too much is spread from coast to coast. there is going to be some kind of martyrdom in the near future we are going to see violence or rob we could argue that we already have the violence in this country with the police pepper spraying protesters with you know innocent teenage women and b. you know but tom on the you know on here oh this is what the alternative media showcasing right now again this is a revolution this is this is a change in psychology this is an evolution in human consciousness the people are waking up and we're demanding change this is no different from what we saw overseas
2:06 pm
in the middle east and northern africa the revolution has now come to the united states of america but what started as i said wall street's now spread worldwide this weekend galvanized into action one of the largest collective movements of its kind tens of thousands of spilled on the city streets across the world and to great protests already taken hold of more than eighty countries with europe becoming one of the main targets of public theory against banks and politicians let's take a look at the pictures from rome first police there used tear gas and water cannon the crowds of protesters smashed bank windows and torched cars plumes of smoke we're seeing bellowing into the sky into the coliseum in other parts of the city and in britain the police sort of protesters efforts to set up camp outside the stock exchange in london several hundred activists heckled offices for preventing more people from joining the rally and in germany berlin scuffles broke out in front of the german parliament building and police removed demonstrators tens food stalls all correspondence of course continue to keep their eyes on how people are
2:07 pm
making their feelings felt around the world they're constantly updating us you can follow them online. these people who are on the streets out madrid today they believe that their voices are in fact being hurt the demonstrations here in israel will continue to grow until the government meet the demands of the police have been trying to disperse the last few remaining hundred hardcore protesters. reports across the globe just click onto our web site c dot com. sponsored by slowing poverty. by the country's waiting for. cutting jobs and social spending people across the globe rise up against the government's economic policies follow the world wide action against austerity live . at the big stories well rumbling on this week on thursday the struggling a you breathed a sigh of relief here one of its smallest members finally voted in favor of the

expanded european bailout fund it was the only you member still stalling euro zone plans but lawmakers rejected the proposal on choose day in a vote that brought down the country's ruling coalition the upgraded four hundred forty billion euro rescue fund will now be able to offer cheap credit to beleaguered banks and buy up increasingly expensive sovereign debt pretty sure and pay nigel farage told us he believes it's a vacuum was forced to change its mind. now isn't good enough no is not acceptable in the modern european union if you say no you are made to vote again until you get the right answer which gives you a true measure of what this project's really like you must understand that i've just been in this parliamentary chamber with mr barroso these people are absolutely intent on creating a united states of europe where they don't care how many millions of people are chucked out of the unemployment scrap heap they don't care about the tide of human is misery that because they have got their political goals but the reality is that not only economically is this failing the book politically it's failing and what is
2:09 pm
the point actually of bailing these countries or what are the bailouts all these bailouts helping the people in greece and portugal are now who they're not what they're actually doing is they're giving money to these countries to give back to our banks who over lent the money in the first place i mean the whole thing is mad what we use countries need who are trapped inside this economic prison called the euro is they need to devalue. you would r.t. so a lot to cover for this with me kevin owen is an ultimatum for kosovo serbs nato demands the removal of roadblocks of the disputed border crossing with serbia stay with us if you got the time to learn if it's got the right to make that kind of request. and israel's foreign minister says israelis and palestinians should be left to sort out their own problems by themselves got more but still related to. former ukrainian prime minister yulia timoshenko feels the law was icy grip just
2:10 pm
two days after being sentenced to seven years behind bars for abuses of power and gas deal she signed with russia a new set of fraud charges is being lined up against the guilty verdict to international anger from russia the e.u. and the united states in the week. judgment day for ukraine's democracy that was how some dubbed events in a key of court this week where former prime minister yulia timoshenko was awaiting the verdict over her alleged shady dealings in a gas deal with russia her supporters took to the streets in her defense before being dispersed by the police. three months of nonstop protests surrounding the case culminated in the biggest reminder yet of the orange revolution the two thousand and four uprising which made to go a household name. now as then there were tens of thousands in the streets naked anger and even naked activists this group staging another topless demonstration

against all sides in the dispute but the main drama was inside the court especially after the judge's controversial verdict. the court has ruled. in addition to is guilty under article three six five pounds three of the criminal code of ukraine and sentences her to seven years imprisonment under noise of the right to work in civil service for three years just last year was one of the most influential female politicians in the world but having lost her power and now her liberty to go was furious. now although retiree and regime or its verdict will stop me the trial showed that the constitution and justice had been trampled under throughout i urge you to begin the struggle it's a very difficult and important moment we have to protect ukraine against the authoritarian regime don't give up. the prosecution claimed she abused power while signing gas deals with russia in two thousand and nine the accusation has raised

eyebrows in moscow which insists the contracts were completely legitimate the original book said that the legitimate. contract which remains in force which was never. used. could become the reason. for the good decision. which took place today the e.u. also doubted president viktor yanukovych has assurances that the case had not been politicized and lashed out at ukraine's leadership experts say kiev now finds itself in a very difficult position to potential membership the european union is some years away and i think we shouldn't pretend otherwise but we do wants the countries in europe seems to know to get closer to here not just in terms of membership in terms of european values like the rule of justice and this is clearly an extraordinary setback and i do think it is quite possible that the invitation for president
2:13 pm
yanukovych to come here on the twenty eighth of october will now be withdrawn another criminal case was launched against him a shank or two days after the verdict was announced accusing her of shifting her own death to russia's defense ministry onto ukraine's budget fifteen years ago this only added to her image of a martyr a symbol of freedom supported by the masses and few doubt she would hesitate to capitalize on that status even if she has to wait seven years to do so just hours after a simmering tension in central kiev it is back to quiet and normal again it is unclear whether unity machine cause fate has been sealed as experts are now speculating that a presidential pardon is still a possibility but these protesters here are determined to stay here for at least another week in any case let's see russia party reporting from kiev in ukraine. well as you saw there tempers running high outside court after your guilty verdict was announced not correspond to the. document is everything that happened they was

right in the thick of it throughout we've got his pictures online of facebook dot com slash r t news we've also got footage of the angry response in kiev and a you tube channel for you as well and deep seems the gas deal drive was all over the news of the moment later in our program tonight is what we find there was the regulators were looking for when they raided the european offices of russian energy giant gazprom. different topic next to israel and palestine should resolve the conflict by themselves without outside help according to the israeli foreign minister labor but he says there's no need for mediation for the middle east quartet made up of the un the us e.u. and russia what to discuss this further let's talk now to jeff barack is a columnist for the jerusalem post jeffrey good evening thanks for being an r.t. international so do you think when these comments by the israeli foreign minister will come as a surprise to the members of the quartet. you know i don't think the members of the
2:15 pm
quartet it will be surprised by most things for mr lieberman says mr lieberman is unusual among israeli foreign ministers in the past the foreign ministers who are always those who took a more dovish approach to negotiations with israel's arab neighbors but in this government mr lieberman is on the right of his government colleagues and he's been making remarks like this for quite some time so what lies behind this tough stance you say lies on the right but is it anything to do as well maybe that israel's feeling under too much pressure from the outside over this going to continue the progress of settlement building in the occupied palestinian land that we're hearing more about that even this week. well i think it's. in this world peace if it is ever going to be solved will be solved under an international umbrella of course mr lieberman is right in the ideal situation would be nothing better than fish release and the palestinians to sit down together and
2:16 pm
reach a peace agreement between the two of them without the need for international mediation unfortunately however history has shown this isn't going to be the case and in fact one of israel has made a peace agreement with another arab country the international community in particular of course the united states has been very much behind those negotiations if you look for example a peace really egyptian peace accord although the initial contacts were made between israeli and egyptian it needed to come david summit. president carter to finalize the deal and in the case of the palestinians or initial contacts between is on the palestinians back at the beginning will be also called were conducted through secret israeli palestinian charles to get them to any stage towards an agreement needs an international commitment particular as far as israel's concerned with the united states backing israel wants american backing for its security needs the palestinians on the other hand want to know that they have the backing of the arab world to make the compromises that they'll have to make if there is to be
2:17 pm
a peace agreement between the two sides are sort of focus on as well because the lieberman also stated it is it if you that israel doesn't dismiss the suggestion of military strikes against iraq and the looking ahead are likely to think that scenario might be. worth very much the official israeli position all israeli officials will say that israel is removing any option from the table in terms of how to cope with iran's nuclear program. however at the same time there isn't a feeling in israel among certain members of the security establishment particularly the former mossad began who after he left office made a number of very public statements saying that israel alone couldn't solve the reigning nuclear issue and that any possible strike against iranian nuclear installations needed again the umbrella of the united states so this lieberman saying something that other israeli leaders have said but i don't think that is the basic israeli premise of israel and israel alone is going to be the country that
2:18 pm
has to deal with the problem of iran's nuclear capable with its latest utterances though it may be trying to stir up more trouble is calling for iran to be fully isolated what's more sanctions imposed on the country. thinking about the arab spring i think israel was trying to stir things up in iran of the hope of saying an uprising there maybe. well no i think mr lieberman is probably to say that israel sees a possible nuclear armed iran as an existential threat and that the international community has to deal with this i mean a nuclear armed iran does not only threaten israel it threatens all of your and it is a real danger to the world stability mr lieberman was doing with raising the prospect that israel hasn't taken any options off the table and there i think he was just reflecting a basic israeli stance by i don't think particularly right now israel is saying it's now or never israel is going to act alone i don't think he was doing really

good to get your thoughts columnist for the jerusalem post thank you very much. moves towards reform started in syria or a new constitution is being drafted after months of anti-government protests the draft is due to be completed within four months president assad schools multi-party elections in february after protesters have been on the streets now since march this week tens of thousands of assad supporters have been. cheering for the government in the syrian capital the unrest has claimed over three thousand lives with the u.n. warning the country might be heading for full blown civil war test chrysalis spoke to people from both sides and sent us this report. but voices of support. and continuing dissent some and in deadly clashes polar opposites in their demands but in some way united by a newfound zeal to take a stand for years to separate the fear and kaffir it was have gathered show their

support for the government not everything is a far cry from images we've been seeing in other cities that a country where there have been reporting watches with me for kurdish north haven't had a government protests an issue however one would think it's a matter where in this country because of course it is sometimes the trip that was the very way for you that everybody with. her husband and young children were one of many families who braved the heat and joy the crowds in downtown damascus. it's true that we knew nothing about politics before but now we take a stand even if i'm a sunni muslim i'm pro this president. ever since most people started revealing their political stance openly some people would mock me and say since when do you know about politics what do you know there are divisions among family members some are pro assad some are anti but that's how it is. it appears that apathy is becoming a less of an option for citizens of
2:21 pm
a nation now under intense international scrutiny i never watched news i never cared you know i never never had any interest in politics but. i think most of us maybe books we watch the news media articles you know baseball we want to know want to know people and then you have the right back around and other issues about your country what you got because her. yeah there are those like the new i'm saying who are no strangers to picking a side and making it known he's long been voicing his discontent at what he calls a repressive regime and today facebook is one of his main tools in coordinating dissent coalition activism has evolved in syria for me i feel that my voice goes further now back then it started with stating an opinion going to jail that hitting a dead and no one would even know about it that has changed now that people are more politically aware hussein has been thrown in jail says he was tortured and

finds himself constantly looking over his shoulder. i was detained for spreading the word on the violent crackdown in daraa but i'd feel like a coward if i didn't risk my life while those on the streets are doing so asking for the regime to fall a call staunchly opposed by those on the other side if. we. get. it right. while political curiosity and activism among syrians are growing whatever side of the divide they're on people here see the future of their country is at stake but all are adamant that future is firmly in their own hands. that's our still yeah r.t. damascus. nato forces in kosovo delivered an ultimatum to ethnic serbs manning the barricades at a border crossing in the breakaway regions north they're ordered to remove the obstructions or monday all peacekeepers will step in and clear the road themselves
2:23 pm
the serbs complain that they'll be given too little time to comply the road blocks of now have been in place for nearly a month set up in protest at nato forces taking over the checkpoint and allowing kosovan customs officers to be placed there but you may recall just last month some of the barricades were bulldozed resulting in violence with peacekeepers using rubber bullets and tear gas against the serbs his actions would be legitimate if not for the fact that they also serve the interests of course of an official says nicola tenacity and he's a political analyst for the magazine new serbian political thought who spoke to me . legally they do have a right to as they say. they see it in for it's freedom of movement on the whole territory of cost of war but the problem is with legitimacy because the serbian authorities are thought to serve and possible to recognize nato is right and paid for and right to enforce the law and in cost of all but the problem is that most need a country the nato itself recognizes the independence of kosovo officials and is
2:24 pm
currently trying to implement their laws and to establish their checkpoints at the border between northern parts of one central serbia and that is what is an acceptable for the serbs so cape or in a self and should it be only nato convoys there would be no problem whatsoever they could all cause the problem is that they carry in themselves and officials from the possible government. recent raids by e. regulators on the european offices of russian energy giant gazprom may force moscow to review supply the ills to europe industry analysts say the searches were a desperate act to pressure russia to sell gas on better terms europe correspondent daniel bushels got the story. this event still to be one reason behind the e.u. raids on gazprom offices at the beginning of october european energy giants electricity de france and b a s if said to join russia sell stream pipeline to europe and they're said to be the warrant for the bucco an e.u.

bugs rival their successive. told from last miles and the commission of law for example it's their pet project the book of but why would the e.u. want these raids to spook russia a reliable supplier to renegotiate any contracts brussels must prove irregularities in its deals with gazprom the european subsidiaries and that seems unlikely but nobody really believes that the e.u. has a strong case for proving their point we see this more as a measure to increase pressure on gazprom in russia the e.u. says it wants cheaper gas and more players on the market but his strategy may have one crucial flaw. they say sell our gas to another company when it gets to europe but that company must make a profit on the deal and that will immediately raise the price of the homes pay analysts say the being influenced by several anti russian hardliners many of whom are upset about missing out on the opportunity to take part in big energy ventures

especially baltic nations which the north stream pipeline point policies taking russian gas straight to germany instead of complaining six per se they could have moved on the world with russia. lithuania's and our russian inertia will undermine their society politically and economically at the moment little when he is pursuing a one dimensional policy that. given the problems in the euro zone will leave it regretting it did not pursue a more constructive policy with russia for example signed a new deal with gazprom which will generate income and contribute to cannot mixed ability emotions that are also running hoyer among some european politicians who want to end their reliance on russian gas despite efforts by moscow to diversify routes. governments european union. thing thinkable. we don't need

you would not be happy it were very in sent to asia i think china and russia kempo attack this for a teacher interest in political interest there and would not let america to mount a staging post for afghanistan so this is very important for both countries. and the connection between china russia goes deeper than just economic deals too as we hear on our t.v. in a few minutes time from a veteran observer who explains the country's long held cold cultural ties also had feet to sports team is here with the latest from the artistic gymnastics world championships just wrapped up in tokyo got the latest for you my name's kevin i would and that's just let you know how the next half hour rolls out here on our team from moscow this summit on.
