walk away seven pm thursday afternoon here in moscow my name's kevin irwin you're watching r.t. and the top story the breaking news from libya where government officials say colonel gadhafi has been killed the news comes from the city of sirte which has reportedly been overrun by government forces earlier today these are the latest pictures we got through from there you can see people celebrating officials first and said the combat field being taken alive with serious injuries and both his legs the latest we're hearing from national transitional council look this is the colonel has died from his room full of gadhafi sons is reportedly also been killed and said today the sea is said to full of sirte would spell the liberation of libya after nine months of civil war well it's early days but let's try and get some analysis on that from london based on the right of his kris nine and chris very good evening to you thanks for being on our team from london there has indeed been killed and we still need to verify that would that be
11:02 am
a logical conclusion i ask the nine months of civil war in the country. well it's not just a civil war we're talking about the logical conclusion of a massive nato intervention which wasn't supposed to be about regime change but clearly was about regime change from the start illegally as it happened so in a certain sense yes this is the logical outcome of of what is basically a colonial operation to remove the government. an african country by european and. by european powers in the u.s. two questions in one here we saw the u.s. secretary of state visit earlier on a couple of days ago saying that they wanted him captured or killed or wanted to seal his fate then maybe if he hadn't of been killed we're still trying to get the evidence that he has if we were ever to have been taken alive and appeared in court what sort of implications could that have had what sort of. well i don't think it
11:03 am
is a god particularly for trial. in any case but i mean nevertheless the what is basically i guess a kind of summary execution of what may well have been a summary execution is a kind of fairly barbaric into what i believe was a very proper operation from the start and as a side you know this was not this was never supposed to be about regime change this nato operation but that's that's really what's been the outcome of it and i mean you know i think the celebration on the ground of the kind of triumphalism that we're no doubt going to hear from the western powers is in both cases premature because this is. a transitional government that is essentially handpicked in washington in paris and in london and it's not it's the outcome of the democratic aspirations of the libyan people so you know i feel this is very much. you know the sort of colonial operations that are being constructed from the
11:04 am
european capitals and from washington if these pictures where you were talking of your shoulder showing the really graphic pictures of purported to be clearly good after if it is true if it was it was on the cards this would happen. well of course it was always on the cards because as i say the way this operation from the european for the western part of this operation has really. been framed as a regime change operation so so clearly you know when they capture him they're going to. that the chances are they're going to kill him. but you know it was it was supposed to be humanitarian operation if you remember it was supposed to be about protecting civilians and saving civilian lives but actually the nato bombing must have killed thousands of innocent libyans and i don't believe the outcome is going to be one of. you know peace some progress some fortunately because just like the kind of interventions in iraq and in afghanistan the truth is i think it will
11:05 am
turn out to be that you can't impose democracy you can't impose progress. bar bombing the country environment in the outcome from abroad but we're going to have with the nato side of it no i guess if he has been killed last battle on the face of it is over now and so. their lives will move on no. well i mean you know that should be because but i guess it probably won't be the case because i think they'll find ways of continuing to. have. if it's advisors or security forces of some sort on the ground then they'll continue to have very very close relations with the government because essentially the government has. been chosen by the nato as many of the people at the top at the top levels of the. the t.c.l.
11:06 am
people who are. actually relations with with the west and with america. and with the western powers and many of them of course were in the bring the good life is carbon anyway so i don't think this bodes well in on either. in either case for a transition to sort of democracy and freedom and progress for the libyan people that's the problem chris not a lot of a study where i can just thank you for being on the program much appreciate it thank you all moamar gaddafi ruled libya for nearly forty two years before he was ousted in august and he's paid all of it takes a look back at the role of one of the world's most controversial leader. through the streets of his own smoldering carpets or a far cry from when he assumed power in a bloodless coup in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine shunning the west duffy equipped his army with soviet military technology all paid for with money from libya's huge oil reserves during the cold war he opened up libya as

11:08 am
cosmetic surgery partially hidden behind sunglasses at all times the beginning of the end came in february political unrest swept along on the wave of popular revolt in egypt reached libya the response from the libyan leader was brutal the u.n. passed a resolution to allow air strikes on libya as rebels backed up with military aid from foreign governments closed in on his last safe haven eight months after the first protests and despite claims from gadhafi that he would fight on and when one of the most colorful and controversial figures in modern history was removed from power peter all of a party. greece for me is paralyzed by the today general strike as thousands of greeks continue to protest across the country against new budget cuts parliament student votes on another round of the intensity of popular austerity measures needed to secure a continued payment from the international bailout fund let's get the latest go to athens now first there sara book more violence broke out again on the streets of
11:09 am
athens what is the situation like in the greek capital. very chaotic scenes unfortunately that we saw breaking out following clashes not just between the riot police and the protesters but originally the protesters themselves the separate groups at the beginning started fighting amongst each other you had a valid case he came in the people who were facing the front of the parliament building wanted to keep things peaceful and so recently that's where the violence started please also it's meeting in and again we still more of that here guys being used in the central square and off the side streets as well it really is extremely chaotic indeed you've got things burning everywhere bits of wood burning stove things being failed left right and center and a number of injuries sustained there as well we were watching it just from about three a little while ago and we could literally see groups of people fighting amongst each other and people being dragged all think him beaten by police about twenty of
11:10 am
the other protesters say it was extremely disconcerting to see with that chaotic scene is to again books being thrown at people who are completely unprotected so a local media here before seeing it unfortunately one man has died following a heart attack in hospital where he was taken when he sustained injuries in the protests and we first unconfirmed sources of the name is saying around fifty people have been injured you see lots of daniel it says gave back and forth trying to make their way through the greatest is that in fact the square and the focus is still remain there at the moment as the parliament votes on this next round of the state's measures that they need to push through to obtain the next tranche of money from the eurozone lenders i mean i don't know if it's obvious question to ask you a calm know what the answer is going to be but what is the feeling on the streets there about this eurozone leaders gathering in brussels on the weekend you know what are they saying very think the chances are going to be that this. crisis is
11:11 am
going to bring any positive result from those talks. but i can tell you the well meaning feeling on the street from the people is one salute few people assert again and again when we seen these protests about this growing public anger at reaching breaking point it really is and it's something that affects so many people here in the culture you really can't convey that enough when you're down there amongst the protesters these two children that teaches their parents targets collectors louise you could just it's every single person in the country turning out and they told us it's because that's been affected by these measures they really have reached the limit they don't feel that the eurozone leaders that they government anymore is working in their interests to tell it you know they do make a fair argument because we've seen a lot of these measures tried to put in place they haven't had the required results
11:12 am
and so the people really have reached the limit of the people that we've spoken to here in the country the economists the analysts say the you know the reason leaders in the government here really seem to have lost sight of the focus of the whole euro same project and it's the idea of there being more and more to be looking like leaders who've lost their way and so we're seeing again this public anger bubbling over with the protests on the streets today nothing's sure furth thanks. crossing back to regular for of course leaving for more. folks you know northern casa. peacekeepers about least to some ethnic serbs today pushing them away from a disputed border crossing and serbs have barricaded the area claiming it belongs to them as they still don't consider kosovo an independent country. with the latest for you. we are now at the scene of the tensions of this tense of between the soldiers of the case for the nato led peacekeeping force here in kosovo and the
11:13 am
cost to insert civilians the soldiers have come here earlier in the morning as you can see on armored vehicles right least three of them behind these barricades as you can see in private mean in full riot gear to try to remove the barricades that ethnic serbs erupted here three months ago but the ethnic serbs living here in kosovo have gathered here to prevent the peacekeepers from going bad from taking the barricades away as they say nato as well as k. four here in the region not as peacekeepers but they are exceeding their mandate the u.n. security council resolution number twelve forty four the only legal reason for them to be here but they are right now rather it's just in pristina in installing its institutions over the course of a over. territory that the ethnic serbs still see as their heartland as an independent state they don't recognize course of his two thousand and eight self proclaimed independence and don't recognize the authorities and laws and
11:14 am
institutions from time to time the peacekeepers they use in loudspeakers addressing to the crowds and calling on that to disperse and threatening otherwise the force would be used and from time to time they are using these tools which is have gas pepper spray this is something like a tear gas it has the same impact on human being as the tear gas has but serbs are not ready to surrender as they say protecting themselves with masks using special liquid to wash their eyes and they say they will be here until the very and as long as it is needed to protect their rise from time to time the leader is of the serbs here are dressed same crowd calling on. remain calm and peaceful as marcus but as you can see the situation may look staple but this is very dramatic
11:15 am
this is an absolutely no win situation and tensions are very high and it's boiling . all the time last month when he came before try to remove the barricades by force they used tear gas against protesters and rubber bullets even and at least seven civilians have been injured and this time as well fears are growing that it could be violent and they could be larger and victims from both sides. reaction of the serbian capital belgrade talked to serbian canadian film director a producer for a smaller ski chorus hi thanks for being on the program you've made films about the west roller polkas you know that area extremely well how do you assess what nato is currently doing in northern kosovo. well for as acting as force to further nato's goals in the province of kosovo and this is something that is just a continuation of their policies for the last ten years the serbs who remain in
11:16 am
kosovo are are there living in horrible conditions basically living in a ghetto and they have been there and their presence there is a form of silent protest against what is happening there as they do not want to leave their homeland they want to stay with us they were the aryans thing the country in which they were born in which they believe is there is what is happening right now is. something that is very extraordinary and the serbs there are saying no to the west and their attempts to. further their goals they are there in peaceful protest protesting against what nato hasn't signed and has gone for possible and if this was happening in a country where nato in the west supports the regime of that country they will be hailing the serbs as freedom fighters in fighters for human rights of course because the west does support the government after all they installed them there they are criminalizing away the serbs and demonizing them once again and presenting
11:17 am
them as criminals and people who want to make a profit out of all this while the west is in fact those who want to make a profit i would have been tossing you know customs over there for a sarcastic on draw you are the worry is without any peacekeepers the serbs in the course of us will go for each other's throat surely will they. well first of all to make such an assessment is a very linear approach and we have to go much deeper than that but i don't want to go into much into the causes of the kosovo war. the serbs and albanians there have lived together for decades and for even centuries the west has aided one group in the separatist war that was thought during one thousand nine hundred and that group has prevailed and at this point they have no intention of being a balanced. force in this whole conflict as the and by they i mean the west obviously supports only one side so if they want to be peace keepers and they
11:18 am
should act like peacekeepers and be neutral and balanced of course kieffer is not doing that and they are supporting their own interests of course which would go in sync with the cause of all the interests that's the big picture let's focus back in on this kind of news event now these blockades of the causing the problems what is going to go the peace talks where is this going to go will those blockades be removed by any saw it was going to. well i think the serbs have no intention of giving up because they're fighting as i said before for their very existence and if they give up now then they've lost everything and i would like to see some more support. you know at least from from the government to servia who the government is basically saying that they're just hoping that somebody will come from the same fix the problem i personally believe that the government and everybody who is in the government should go down there and sit down with the serbs in their province and show support by way not just sit in belgrade and basically just talk so i would
11:19 am
like to see some more support by the government serbia shows i would like to see a show of support by the people of serbia who can go there and support their fellow citizens i think the west there were at this point is unwilling to. find a compromising solution they just want to. further their interests at any cost and if they are not met with no resistance then i'm afraid they will succeed but i want to get on an optimistic that to the solution is to be found in the peaceful resolution that people have to show their disagreement with what's going on and if the people here are united they will. have you know the human rights leaders there are the big picture do you ever see see if they will ever accept the presence of kosovo. i think i think the serbs as a nation will never accept courses in penance there are some people within the serbian people who accept this as a reality and and accept it as something that has to be done unfortunately people
11:20 am
like that do tend to have a lot of influence simply because they're very easily supported by the west but i think the average serbian citizen will never accept kosovo's independence because not only because of historical interest but because this is been done in a way that it has. been contrary to international law has been contrary to any one moral code that was trying to promote. so i think the serbs there in kosovo and serbs. who claim of course who is a part of serbia are simply promoting european values i mean true european values not the ones that the european union is trying to force upon certain people so i think you know fighting for human rights in kosovo and the fighting for international law when it comes to kosovo is very is a very real western value and i hope that the west falls is fully realized that the people of the western world and world altogether will realize just what situation the serbs are and how much they need the help of decent people to achieve their
